In this book Sam Contis presents a new window onto the work of the iconic American photographer Dorothea Lange. Drawing from Lange’s extensive archive, Contis constructs a fragmented, unfamiliar world centred around the figure of the day sleeper – at once a symbol of respite and oblivion. The book shows us one artist through the eyes of another, with Contis responding to resonances between her and Lange’s ways of seeing. It reveals a largely unknown side of Lange, and includes previously unseen photographs of her family, portraiture from her studio, and pictures made in the streets of San Francisco and the East Bay. Day Sleeper will be featured alongside other works of Contis’ in the exhibition Dorothea Lange: Words & Pictures at the Museum of Modern Art, February–May 2020.

Sono due le cose che mi hanno colpito di più in questo volume.
Innanzitutto, trattandosi di fotografie che Lange ha scattato al di fuori della sua ben più nota attività “documentaristica” per la Farm Security Administration, emerge molto di più un suo approccio più puramente artistico e in alcuni casi quasi astratto (ma del resto, seppur in modo diverso, anche il primissimo Walker Evans aveva frequentato quei lidi, penso alle serie sul ponte di Brooklyn). Dal volume emerge un'ampiezza tematica e stilistica per me inaspettata e assolutamente magnifica, che nulla ha da invidiare ai suoi lavori “ufficiali”.
La seconda cosa che mi ha stupito è l'abilità di Sam Contis nell'imprimere un sentiero narrativo fra le foto, di creare richiami e corrispondenze, di far emergere il tema ricorrente del sonno diurno che serpeggiava nel corpus delle opere di Lange e i diversi significati che il ribaltamento di sonno diurno / veglia notturna può assumere: tregua, oblio, fatica, tenerezza ma anche lotta (e qui emerge la contiguità rispetto ai lavori per la FSA). La mano di Contis nella scelta delle fotografie, nella composizione del volume e nel breve ma meraviglioso apparato critico è evidentissima e molto personale, giustamente quindi il libro è accreditato anche a lui.
Insomma, è un personale viaggio di Contis nell'opera di Lange che lascia però a noi i nostri sentieri. Le ultime due fotografie per me sono state una rivelazione: ho pensato immediatamente a Sia Questo il Verso di Philip Larkin. Eccolo qua il mio percorso.

Quella dell'americana Sam Contis è un'operazione di riscoperta e ricontestualizzazione di alcune immagini (per lo più inedite) di Dorothea Lange, editate con spirito contemporaneo. Contis rilegge la relazione fra quotidiano e politico nell'opera di Lange (queste non sono le "solite" foto della FSA), costruendo connessioni con l'oggi e aggiornando quindi il messaggio dell'autrice. Emerge il tema del "day sleeper", con il sonno come simbolo - nelle parole della curatrice - di tregua e oblio. Operazione intelligente (e come prevedibile immagini bellissime, intime e delicate).

Solid collection of black & white photographs by Dorothea Lange transports the viewer back in time. Recommend for fans of photography.

Interesting book reenvisions Lange as an art photographer, rather than a capturer of social documentation. Well worth a look for Lange and photography fans.
