From a time around when DS/AI field started picking up, every other day I get at least 8-10 messages from DS/AI starters & enthusiasts on 'How can I get into DS/AI field?'. Over a while, I have improvised my response based on the follow-up questions they ask like: 1. What is the difference between DS, ML, DL, AI, DM? 2. What are the roles in DS/AI, who does what? 3. What concepts, processes & tools they need to learn? 4. Which books, courses, etc they need to refer to? 5. How to build a DS/AI portfolio? 6. How to write a resume for DS/AI? 7. How to build a helpful network?8. How to search for the job? 9. How to prepare for the interview? 10. How to stay up to date in this still-evolving field? You can notice that these questions are not conceptual ones and there is no dedicated material to address these roadblocks. How about a book or course that gives you enough exposure to the DS/AI field that you can yourself analyze what is needed for you and build your own roadmap? My answer to the above question is this book. This book covers the framework to launch your DS/AI career in 8 chapters.
Today, I read the book 'DS/AI Self-Starter Handbook' by Ankit Rathi in one seating. It took me 2 hours to complete the book. It might take you only an hour if you decide not to visit certain resource links mentioned in the book.
I love how the content of the book is divided into 4 phases: Navigate, Build, Launch and Maintain (relating career to a launching satellite).
Each phase is explained precisely by keeping it short and sticking to the point. This saves a lot of time and energy. Also one doesn't tend to lose interest.
The author has suggested quite a good number of free/affordable resources to learn from. These are worth checking out and then determining the best ones for ourselves.
The tag line on the book says, 'Build your own road-map'. After reading this book, I think all of us can definitely build one.
I just wished that the book had coloured screenshots(instead of b&w) of the online resources. It would've given a better understanding and made things look attractive.
I highly recommend this book to all DS/AI beginners. It is definitely worth a read.
This is a great book for anyone who want to launch their career in Data Science. Ankit has made a great job in giving clear guidelines on every stage one goes through to get a job as a Data Scientist. It also has chapters on what one should do, once they get their dream job to keep themselves relevant in the ever growing field. Although, I know most of the information in the beginning chapters of the book beforehand, I would say that, this book would have been a great benefit for me, when I was starting to learn Data Science. It took me nearly a whole year, to figure out what Ankit has said in the first few chapters of the book. I wish I had this book from the beginning. Things which I learnt new and would like to implement in my job search: writing good blog posts, networking well. Overall, this is a great book who wish to start their career in Data science. Although this is a very short read, it would be beneficial if you would refer this book whenever you are struck with something in your journey.
*** This review may be biased because I am the author of this book. ***
From last few years, the most frequently asked question to me by a DS/AI starter/enthusiast has been 'How can I get into DS/AI field?'. So much so that I ended up writing a book on the topic.
Basically, I have built a learning framework for beginners to get into DS/AI:
Navigate -> Build -> Launch -> Maintain
It answers most of the questions about the field a newcomer has and provides an end-to-end journey.
Based on the feedback I have received from reviewers and readers till now, I am fairly confident that it will be really helpful to shape your career in DS/AI as a beginner/enthusiast.
I would say this book is a good package for beginner, intermediate and advance data enthusiasts. It covers the whole spectrum so nicely that from starting DS/AI journey to actually landing into a job, throughout it helps you, and even after getting a job it has some more to offer. Three pillars to DS/AI i.e. Math/Statistics, CS/IT and Business/Domain knowledge and their importance is very well scripted.
As the book suggests, it is a roadmap with a variety of options to choose from. I personally loved this book.
DS/AI Self-Starter Handbook is a great book for someone who is really interested to get into the field of Data science. I am very much interested to get into the Data Science path and had many many doubts and this book helped me in answering all the questions.... If someone wants to get into the Data Science field and are serious about it, this is a great book to start with... It doesn't teach you the concepts but will provide you the clarity required in the Data science path
A perfect road map to build your career into Data Science. This book gives a clarity on various terminologies of Data Science and its concepts; various roles and designation in the industry; where and what to look for a concept and much more. This book does not explain you any of the Data science algorithms but it definitely gives you a head-ups on where to look for it.
One of the best books to kick start your journey towards DS/AI. The process of learning is very well explained by Ankit. I would like to recommend this book to anyone who wants to take this field to understand what it takes to become a DI/AI expert. It does involve a lot of commitment and a lot of hard work. Kudos! to Ankit who has written the journey exceptionally.
Compact and summarization of queries, tips and tricks for freshers venturing into data science field. I will recommend it because of the knowledge of author and the patience to jolt it down into approx 120 pages.
Its a must-have for any beginner in the world of data science & AI. End-to-end journey has been captured in four phases: Navigate - Build - Launch - Maintain, lots of ground has been covered in less than 150 pages, crisp & to the point.
As the title is "Build Your Own Road-Map"..this book is really helpful in building and defining your own road map towards Data Science .This book really helps in understanding How to build impressive portfolio and How to build a network and many more aspects.
A wonderful book. Being a beginner in data science journey, this book made me aware of so many awesome websites, other books and resources, which would have rather hidden from me. It's a perfect roadmap to build your Data Science career. Highly recommended!
