Music. Cultural Studies. The complete reprint of SEARCH & DESTROY # 7-11 contains over 100 articles, plus 350 pohots and illustrations. While other zines printed mostly concert and record reviews, S&D was the only publication to fully document the punk cultural revolution -- the life behind the music -- as it was being invented. SEARCH & DESTROY gives the fullest picture of what it was like to be in the punk underground at the very 1976-1979 -- Last Gasp Newsletter.
Japanese-American writer and publisher. He also played keyboards for the later famous power trio Blue Cheer.
In 1977 he started to publish the punk fanzine "Search and destroy" In 1980, he began publication of RE/Search, a tabloid format zine focusing on various counterculture and underground topics.
RE/Search later became always a format for books, of which Vale is a regular contributor.
The late 70's was a great time for rock n' roll publications. In the Los Angeles area we had Slash and New York had the New York Rocker. San Francisco had it's own Punk publication that was very much the identity of that city - Search and Destroy.
Basically the newspaper like publication would have long Q&A formated articles on various punk bands of the time - both in S.F. as well as elsewhere such as L.A., London, and New York. The edge they had over the others was its interest in politics and literature. Often they would ask a music person what their favorite books were or their political thoughts. And looking through this book (as well as volume 1) it still is a good read and great documentation of a time and place.
