Tech correspondent for CBS and CNN decided to break away from some of his gadgets (apparently at his wife's insistence) and has written up his plan as advice for others to follow.

Very little evidence anybody else has used the plan to good effect, making me wonder what the standards are for writing an entire book about your proposed intervention.

Unctuous, cutesy writing style -- for example, he recommends as a useful gadget to own "Clocky" a little alarm clock with rubber wheels --- "when it's time for wakey wakey, Clocky takes a jumpy jumpy right off your night table" (p. 169).

Since he recommends doing stuff I already do (e.g., read newspaper) and at least temporarily pulling yourself away from or at least cutting back on stuff I don't do (texting, facebook, cell phone, smartphone "apps", e-reader........) it was easy for me to agree with overall message, but I can't recommend the book itself.

This was a quick read which, despite some outdated information (specifically on apps which are more than likely not on app stores anymore) it did give me pause to reexamine my relationship with my phone and digital devices. I do agree with the reviews saying it could have been a web article due to all the filler, however I'm satisfied with what I got out of it.

Some good thoughts, but the useful content is more suited to an article or two. Way too much filler was needed to turn it into a book. Didn't finish it.

This is a fantastic book, it is written in an easy to read conversational style. You could be talking with your best friend. I got this book out of the library because I thought I, and my entire family, could do with cutting down how much time we spend on the computer. This book is perfect for that. It really gets you thinking about the effect all this technology (in all it's forms: Computer, Smart phone, ipod, MP3 player, etc.) has on you and your day to day life. It makes you think how much you are using all this technology, and whether you really need. There are small exercises for you to do, to actually get back to living your real life - your offline life - and remember what life was like before you spent 8 hours a day on your computer / smartphone, etc.

I also love how this is written by someone who loves technology, has become majorly addicted to using technology, and speaks from experience with the knowledge of how you use technology. So many times you read something and instantly recognise yourself - Yes I do that, yes that is exactly what I feel. It's very real and relevant to everyone who lives and breathes technology, sometimes without realising they do. A great eye-opener, and a great way to teach you to make the most of the technology in your life, cut out what you don't need, and optimise what you do. Start living your own life today, with real friends and real family relationships, and stop worrying about your online social network life, or spending hours mindlessly surfing the internet. What are you actually getting out of it? This book answers that question and so many more!

I loaned this from the library, now I'm going to buy it to makie it a permanent addition to my bookshelf. Valuable life lessons I cannot live without.

- рассчитываем Индекс Виртуального Веса (ИВВ) и анализируем, как технологии влияют на нашу жизнь (лишние расходы, мало времени проводим с семьей, невнимательность и тд);

1-2 дня Детоксикация или отказ от гаджетов;
3-5 день Использование гаджетов не более 45 минут в день;
6-8 день Использование гаджетов не более 1 часа в день;

9-11 день Определить те гаждеты и приложения, которые необходимы;
12-15 день Применение только необходимых гаджетов и приложений, которые повышают продуктивность;
16-18 день Общение с близкими в офлайне и без телефонов на столе;

19-23 день Определение границ электронного дня;

A nice book for those who want to take charge of their digital lives and get back with their close ones and relatives. It consists from the day to day exercises and tips that one by one lead to the better control over consumption of digital content and communications. On the downside, the book is more concentrated on the addiction to social networks and communication through the internet rather than data addiction like mine. Still, a great book, especially for parents and those who need control over social networks addiction.

The author tells us how he was spending too much time on social networks and it was hurting his relationships. He thus decided to do a drastic digital diet to try to reconnect with his friends and family. In this book, he offers some guidance on how and why we should question our usage of technologies.

Some of it is interesting, but I think some of the chapters could have been removed (particularly when listing apps you could use on your phone, or on the web). I would not recommend this book.

I thought this would be a good follow-up to Sherry Turkle's "Alone Together," but it wasn't. Aside from advocating a "diet" of a certain number of online/connected minutes per day, his solution is not so much to simplify but to use even more online tools and apps to be more productive in shorter time.

Nothing spectacular or particularly insightful, but it was quick. None of the gimmicks or exercises are very valuable, everything just revolves around making conscious choices instead of jumping at every ding, vibration, or flashing light that the nearest gadget gives off.

So even though the "diet" isn't well fleshed out or organized, the ideas in this book made sense to me. I've been questioning my reliance on gadgets and social media and such, and this helped me make some decisions that make me feel a bit better about it.

This book provides good insight, and while I didn't actually follow the plan structured by the author, it did challenge me to think about how I could place more control in my hands and re-evaluate the tech addictions I do have.

So so. The book asks important questions and encourages having better technology choices to live better. People don't need a detox like the author suggests. They need to ask the question why. People aren't "addicted" to Facebook or technology. It's the symptom of a larger problem.

It was quick, had some good ideas but reading other people's reviews after the fact rings true. I would just skip this but it is short and easy.
