It’s amazing how you can go through a whole life without knowing the details about a major part of our lives like gas supply! These Ladybird books were providing a really good educational service for children in the 1960s with their output. I feel sad and angry that gas supply, nationalised then, is today subject to capitalism and profiteering.
I work in the UK gas industry so bought this book to show my kids. Some of the facts aren't quite true anymore (the book is from 1967) but most of it is still valid. I expected it to be quite simple, but it goes into more detail than I would expect for something aimed at kids. Maybe children had more capacity for this sort of thing 50+ years ago.
Each double page has coloured illustrations of what's going on, with a page of text. It covers topics such as the history of the gas industry, where gas comes from, and some basic safety advice. Not bad really as a simple introduction, covering things that most adults wouldn't necessarily know.
