David Graham loves women—so much that being a gentleman courtesan is more pleasure than business. Having newly inherited a failing country estate, the income to be earned pleasing wealthy women doesn’t hurt matters. When a new, lucrative contract is offered to him, David is happy to take on a new client… until he finds out what she really wants from him.
Widowed and alone, Regina Hurst has no desire to engage in a passionate affair. Finally free and independent from the tyrannical rule of her late husband, she only wants what he could never give her—a child. Hiring a professional courtesan seems like the best way of achieving her aims, but she never expects an arrangement of convenience to blossom into something more.
David sees Regina as frigid and severe, but more time spent in her company reveals a dark and hidden pain. The more she resists the spark of attraction between them, the more he strives to earn her trust and affection. Attachment is against the rules of conduct for a gentleman courtesan, but David is helpless to fight his burgeoning feelings.
When their time together ends, will he walk away substantially wealthier, putting Regina behind him forever? Or, will he take a chance on turning a mercenary arrangement into something that will last forever?
Victoria Vale writes erotic romance that refuses to stay in its lane. She hops between history and suspense, blending danger with desire until the edges blur. Her stories are marked by bold heroines, irresistible heroes, and heat that never behaves the way it should. Love Me Darkly (2025) proves passion is always at its best when it misbehaves.
I think this was the sweetest and least angsty installment of the series so far. Loved it.😍
The epilogue gives a teaser of book 5...and OMG..the Alpha aggression coming of Benedict already has me swooning and drooling over Victoria Vale's first M/M book. ❤❤❤
With his love of women and need for funds, working as a courtesan is the perfect solution for David Graham and has never felt much like work. With his father's passing, David has suddenly been saddled with a crumbling estate, unhappy tenants, and his mother and two younger sisters to care for. When he's offered a lucrative contract close to home, it seems like the solution to all his problems, until he learns exactly what the lady wants from him.
Recently widowed Regina Hurst is happy to be out from under the thumb of her cruel husband. Inheriting his entire wealth and vast estate ensures her independence, but she's lonely and longs for a child to love. She has no desire for an affair, so hiring a professional to achieve her goals seems the best option. She's certainly not prepared when her convenient arrangement leaves her questioning everything she ever believed about men and intimacy.
Upon meeting Regina, David finds her cold but soon delves deeper to reveal the pain she hides. The more she tries to keep up her frigid facade, the more David burns it down with his caring and patience. As he earns her trust, David finds himself breaking the number one rule of the Gentleman Courtesans: don't fall in love. Though he's loath to leave her when their arrangement is over, convincing Regina to trust him completely may be too much even for David's substantial charm.
I adored David and Regina together, especially once Regina finally started to give him a real chance. He was so sweet, patient, and gentle, and was just what she needed. My complaint is that I wasn't crazy seeing the hero in bed with another woman in the first scene. I'm not a fan of this and it can be a dealbreaker for me, though I have to say, given David's reputation and occupation, it is rather understandable here and I can overlook it. In fact, despite this being a typical no-go for me, I think here it did lend more gravity to David's depth of feeling when he did fall for Regina. I adored how hard he fell when it happened and I really appreciated how things came together fairly smoothly for these two and with little angst. I loved this book, maybe not quite as much as I wanted to, but it's still a keeper and one of my favorites of the series. I'm definitely looking forward to Darcy Stark's sure to be delicious narration. I'm also super excited for Benedict's book and the stories of the second wave of Gentleman Courtesans as well.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
i loved this racy historical. V. Vale writes great manhooker characters, not just unpaid randy tomcats. They are emotional heros in and out of the sac. taking care of all a women’s needs, like a great mechanic for your ———-. I enjoyed David and Regina’s story, her courage and his persistence. erotic moments are written in a way that is intense and gritty without being too discovery channel graphic. Plot is rich with detail of time, place and manners unique to historical romance. Narration on audio book was also fabulous, one of my new favorites. 💕💕🥵🔥🔥🔥
Gah, this series is addictive! Entertaining and easy breezy, but full of heart. And, importantly, enough depth to keep me engaged; despite the shorter lengths, Vale addresses issues such as racism and domestic violence in a non-cursory manner. I confess to still occasionally skimming the sexytimes, but this is very much a "me thing", as a teething baby has made me quite the grumpasaurus lately.
This story was quieter than its predecessor, which had Grey's Anatomy levels of DRAMA near the end (and let's be honest, I ate it up). But David and Regina were as amusing as they were sweet together, making for a very enjoyable read.
Benedict's story is next, and last. What am I going to do when it's over?!
David Graham loves women—so much that being a gentleman courtesan is more pleasure than business. When his father dies after an accident he inherits a failing country estate, which he thought should have been in a better state as he’s been sending money home for years but an estate agent who's a thief means things are dire. When a new, lucrative contract is offered to him, David is happy to take on a new client until he finds out what she really wants from him. Widowed and alone, Regina Hurst has no desire to engage in a passionate affair. Finally free and independent from the tyrannical rule of her late husband, she only wants what he could never give her—a child. This is the fourth book in this wonderful series, all of the gentlemen courtesans have been gorgeous but David has to be my favourite so far, he’s just totally swoon worthy, a loving caring son, a landowner not afraid to get his hands dirty & a man who loves giving women pleasure. I adored how he seduced Regina into enjoying sex. Regina had endured an abusive marriage for years & I applauded her for having the guts to first hire David & then to trust him enough to give her pleasure. A totally engossing read, which is steamy but tells a lovely story of learning to trust. There is also the ongoing story of Ben trying to foil the woman trying to ruin the courtesans through her gossip column & I can’t wait for the final book, which is Ben's story My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I am still head over heels for this woman’s storytelling skills! Every book I’ve read by her has held some level of emotion to the storyline, but this one was more than emotional for me. I can’t really pick a specific plot point that drove the story this way for me because I think the entire book held emotion at some level.
Regina hasn’t had the best of luck in the romance department in her life. Aside from the times being what they were, her now deceased husband was quite oppressive and severe with her. All she has ever wanted in life is a child and she sees no other recourse now than to hire someone for the job. Cue David Graham, professional courtesan at your service ;)
GAH, I loved reading these two navigating thru their relationship and seeing past each other’s outer persona to who they really were inside. Their journey wasn’t angsty, but like I said before, I felt it to be very emotional and full of heart!
This was such a good story. David and Regina were just right for each other. Regina and suffered an horrendous marriage and had left her with trust problems. David was so patient, understanding and considerate of Regina’s needs. I enjoyed their growing relationship but there was still the matter of Regina’s determination of not marrying again. Added to this is the ongoing drama with Benedict and the mystery behind the London Gossip. I just had to mention Powell, Regina’s butler/footman, who wouldn’t want a man like that on your side! I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I did purchase my own copy.
What I really love about this series, The Gentleman Courtesans, is the camaraderie between a group of guys who want to help themselves and their families. The caring and compassion for each other (and their wives) feels so genuine in these stories. For me, David is the playboy of the group. He is a bit arrogant about what he can do and for good reason really. His feelings, not the ones he shows on the outside, are real and in this story you get immersed in his sorrows. Regina’s plight is common in stories (a fear of intimacy due to a horrible husband). I thought the relationship went warp speed from her fear of not involving herself in the emotions of lovemaking to “yeah, let’s get it on” was a bit too quick. She has this butler who I think should get his own story, even a short story, because he is a fantastic secondary character. A very sweet, and sexy, read.
This is a “reread” for me. Having read it originally, I also purchased the audio when I learned it came out. Two reasons include the author and Darcy Stark. Stark and Victoria Vale are a combo that should not be missed. Vale’s writing style has made her an auto buy for me and I’ve yet to be disappointed.
David Graham one of the Gentleman Courtesans, known for his love of ladies and being an exceptionally talented courtesan. He’s the jokester of the group, never taking life too seriously. Regina Hurst is recently widowed, stunted by her past, and in desperate want of a child.
David’s father dies leaving him with a failing estate. He sent money over the years but for the most part it went straight into the pocket of the steward, who left before he could confront him.
Regina has endured 8 years of abuse in her marriage but her husband has recently died and now she wants the one thing that can bring her happiness and love, a child. She fears intimacy and well men in general because of this abuse.
She hires David to impregnate her but that means no fun in the bedroom which is not something that typically happens during his contracts. He has his qualms about siring a child that he will never know, but he is desperate for the money. David picks up on Regina’s fears and tries to put her at ease by gaining her trust.
I adore when the rake falls so hard in love. Their relationship is heart achingly beautiful and super steamy! And wow the epilogue let’s you in on what’s coming in Benedict’s story! I’ve really enjoyed this series and have tried to figure out what was going to happen next with the London Gossip. I can’t wait for what’s next!
Actually, that one sentence should be my entire review for this book. The entire thing. I can't think of one sentence that describes this book better. And the Prologue. And the Epilogue. And everything in between.
Victoria Vale didn't become my favorite author because she wrote erotica. Writing sex isn't easy, especially when you want it to have emotions, and a plot, and characters to die for. THAT'S why Victoria Vale became my favorite author. And this book, this Taming of the Rake, is another one that will wring you out like a used dishcloth with the emotion it has packed between its pages.
I don't want to tell the story here, because I really hate spoilers, but there are things you need to know about Regina and David. And you need to know them in order for you to decide to buy the books. First Regina is wounded because of her horrible husband, who has died, thank all that's holy. He was a wife-beater, which was probably far more prevalent in that time than we think. The men were brought up to believe they had total control over their wives, and only the wives suffered the consequences. But don't worry, there aren't scenes of beatings contained within the pages, just recollections. Then there's David, who after all, was a Courtesan. And after all, was a Courtesan that Regina hires ... enough of that. If you know any more of the story, it takes away from it.
And the "Damn, she did it again"? She created two beautiful personalities, sprinkled them with lots of hot steam, and then threw their emotions in there, just to keep the reader completely on their toes. And of course, then she threw in a prologue and an epilogue that, while they didn't take me by surprise at all, convinced me that the mind of Victoria Vale is a wonder to behold and that I would love to crawl inside to take notes.
Above all else I could say about this book, I'll say you just don't want to miss this. Yes it is book 4 of the Gentleman Courtesan books, but this is MORE. This is the one that brings the Courtesans together, thank you David for needing a hand. And if you haven't read the first of the books, you really DO need to read all of these to get the full "whammy" from these men. Each book is a standalone, each book has its own HEA. And each book will make you eager to read the next. That's the other thing that Victoria Vale does very well - she makes you WANT to read the next paragraph, the next chapter, the next book.
Ms. Vale, I suggest you get your backside into your office and start writing. We, the lovers of your books, are already impatient.
David Graham lover of all things female has his reality brought to a screeching halt with the untimely death of his father. He now has his mother, sisters and a property in need of extensive repair to consider. Could this new contract be the answer to his financial concerns? Lady Regina Hurst has spent years being brutally treated by her now deceased husband. She is looking to hire a courtesan with the hope he can provide her with the one thing she longs for.
Ultimately David accepts the contract and at first wonders what he has gotten himself into as he is puzzled by Regina’s actions and responses. As he spends time introducing Regina to the experience of living again, he begins to see that he is no longer satisfied with his previous lifestyle. This is a well written story about learning to live, love and most of all trust again. David’s patience with Regina as she struggles with her fears of intimacy and the lengths he goes to in order to help her are truly romantic. With a bit of assistance from some former fellow courtesans and a loyal well intentioned servant named Powell, this couple can’t lose.
Enter the epilogue. This is a peek at the next book in the series about the Gentleman Courtesans founder, Benedict. My reactions's as I read, what?…Wait!….WHAT??!!..NOOOOOOOO!! I had to re-read just in order to ensure my wine consumption wasn’t making me see things. It’s been said that the author has dropped hints in the previous books. Had I read them all I might not have been so blindsided. Admittedly, I am not quite sure how I feel, as the storyline appears to be going in a direction that is not normally of interest to me. Hopefully my brain will come to a decision before Benedict’s story is released.
If you love stories about finding that truly unexpected silver lining, then this is for you. Now I am off to get the first two stories in this series to see what I missed!
I received and ARC of this book and this is my honest review.

Author Vale's📚 "Gentlemen Courtesans" series is so good, I Highly recommend reading every one of them if you can afford to buy them!
David is a gorgeous Greek and English god!! Sexy and he knows it!! He contracted with a recent widow, and her request is in my opinion crazy! But oh sooo good when it comes to the tastefully written love scenes ❤️🔥 Another 5 Star ⭐️ storyline, with incredible characters and especially David and his client Regina. Victoria Vale writes in such a gripping way and such incredible details and the narrative is a 10 Star ⭐️ All of her books draw you in emotionally and every way. Such a talented author!
I was given a copy of this book for an honest review **
Oh my. What a great story. When David's father dies, he comes home to a ruined estate. The money he has been sending to his father was swindled by a steward who left before David could get to him. David is one of the Gentleman Courtesans known for his magic tongue. Benedict tells David there is a widow near his estate that has requested a service from one of Benedict's employees. He is to make arrangements with the lady herself. Benedict is still on the trail of the gossip who is printing things about his business and the employees who have married their clients. Regina Hurst has just lost her husband who treated her terribly. She was surprised when he left her everything instead of the selfish man who was next of kin. When David comes to Regina's house, he is surprised at her beauty and innocence. Her request of what she wants is surprising to him but he needs the money. Will he agree to her terms? What of this Gossip who is causing trouble!!!!!! Can’t wait for Benedict’s story.
David is a gentlemen courtesan and enjoys his job. Regina is a widow and when she hires David, she isn’t looking for a lover but someone to give her a child. As they spend time together, sparks begin to fly. Will David be able to let her go? Fast-paced read and the 4th in this series but it can be read as a stand-alone. I really liked it.
Regina is a strong character who wants a baby of her own and is willing to pay a courtesan to get it. Her deceased husband was unable to give her or any of his mistresses a child so she realizes the problem was not her but him. David is a lover of all women, but Regina is the end of the line for the rest because she becomes the only one he will love for ever.
This book has a pretty powerful message within, and for me it was that not everyone is out to hurt you and that the next person to come into your life might be better than the one who hurt you before but you never know if you don't give them a chance to prove it. Honestly trusting is something I am struggling with myself. Anyway, the characters in this book are easy to connect with and to like.
Ms Vale knows how to keep a girl coming back for more. She consistently writes interesting stories with interesting characters that are easy to connect with. She also brings old characters back from previous books which I love because I hated saying goodbye to them in the first place.
If you like your historical romance a bit steamy with a great storyline and wonderful characters then I highly recommend all of the books from the Gentleman Courtesan series.
The narrator is not my favorite but he does ok and I do like that he tells the story with feeling.
OMG I'm so glad I found this book to read because I was lost at what I should read next. I liked it but we did not get why they fell in love with each other besides the sex and the happy times they spent together and their late night conversations that were referenced but not expanded on. I think I had this same problem with another one of Victoria's books, but it's okay because it was still enjoyable. Just not really sure what he saw in Regina (not my favorite name) besides her beauty. Also, maybe I was tired but the times they had sex where she wasn't an active participant till when she got into it--that bridge was confusing. I think it's because their second to fifth (?) times were referenced, but not a part of the story.
What I am really wondering is who is going to live in Regina's house when she moves into his house? Also, part of me suspected maybe her servant had more than just fatherly feelings for her, idk? Like he could have sired her child, you know?
Okay, the preview to Benedict's book---woah, I wasn't expecting a MM romance. But aren't they all courtesans for women? Maybe Benedict is bisexual?
I found the concept behind this series intriguing and this book is another excellent entry in it. This book really hits you right in the feels. David and Regina were so perfect together. From their first interaction, they just clicked with me and I was all in for them. David was the whole package. This swoon worthy hero was caring and fun but also responsible and not afraid of hard work. Regina made my heart hurt. Her past was heartbreaking and after the terrible hand she had been dealt, you had to admire her for having the strength and nerves needed to embark on the path she chose to take. I felt that together these two were steamy and sweet. A truly terrific romance. This is my volitional, candid review.
Gentleman courtesan David accepts the newly widowed Regina's contract to bed her until she gets with child.
This is a sexy romance featuring two lost people who really needed each other. Regina has bitter memories of her husband who brutalized her. David has pursued a hedonistic life style but has just been handed a strong dose of reality with the death of his father. Suddenly he has to care for a mother, sisters, and a ruined estate.
What started as a transactional relationship soon turns to love but will they recognize it in time?
A twist on the courtesan roll makes this an entertaining read! David and Regina find a strong romance, most unexpected but it cannot be denied! But can she trust him? Very entertaining!
Taming of the Rake – (The Gentleman Courtesans #4) – Victoria Vale
Mr. David Graham, the rake, the lover the true gentleman, the man who is rarely lacking a keeper and for good reason, David knows how to pleasure a woman and women love David for his abilities. Since the London Gossip seems about ready to expose the Gentleman Courtesans by name, Ben thinks it’s important for David to get out of London for a time being. Although going home wasn’t David’s original plan, he is called home due to the surprise death of his father.
Upon reaching home, David discovers that all the money he had been sending home to support his family and the farmers has literally disappeared. David is totally disheartened and knows he needs to ask Ben for a favor, not what he wants, but he needs the money.
Like he always does, Ben comes through for David, there is a client who is looking for a Courtesan for a specific job. Regina Hurst newly widowed has one job for David if he is up to it. She wants a child and she wants him to father that child, then take his final payment and bonus and walk away. Regina however, has issues to deal with. Regina’s late husband was by no means a gentleman, it would be better to describe him as an abuser, both physical and emotional leaving Regina a broken woman with just one wish someone to love her, hence her wish for hiring David.
Their story is an emotional story, full of angst, fear, sadness and misconceptions. If there is one thing David wishes to give Regina besides the child she so desperately wants, it is to be able to trust again to know that pleasure is part of sex and sex is something to enjoy not fear. It is truly a beautiful story of two souls who learn the meaning of love
Secondary to David and Regina’s story, is that of Ben and the London Gossip. Ben is coming closer and closer to discovering who she is and he will expose her, while protecting the Courtesans, but at what cost to himself. There is something that he has held back from all the Courtesans, most especially his best friends Aubrey and Nick. We will learn that story and what it may cost Ben.
As always, Victoria Vale gives us a story woven together with the beauty of words, colors, feelings, hopes and dreams. She allows the reader to live the story with her characters and leaves us celebrating with those that have found happiness and their way back to living.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I had book insomnia because of David and Regina’s story!! I could not put it down!! Holy wow these two!! Once again Victoria Vale gave us characters that we are more than happy to cheer for and ugly cry AF for. Loved their HEA!!
Can I pleeeeeaaaase order a David?! Coz this hero is beyond swoon-worthy!! When he’s in bed, his partner(s) come first... literally!! This man will make you want to sit in front of a fan, y’all!! Wowza!! But he’s also kind, attentive, and patient. It’s funny because in the previous books David sounded like a devil-may-care kinda guy... but when it matters the most, he takes his responsibilities seriously. Y’all are going to absolute looooove David.
Regina totally broke my heart. She’s lived through hell for 8 agonizing years. So when she’s finally free of her abusive husband, she hires a Gentleman Courtesan to give her the one thing that she wants the most... a baby. She doesn’t want “love” making... she just wants quick in and out (oh these puns) transactions until the goal is achieved. But David makes her feel things she never imagined she could feel with and for a man. And he’s making her come out of her shell. I love it when she came into her own. She deserves all the happiness coming her way... especially with David by her side!!
Now I love Regina and David, but there’s a standout character that I want to make my book boyfriend... Powell, Regina’s footman/bodyguard!! Oh my yum, I wants him!! I’m hoping that Victoria Vale gives him his very own story. He so deserves an HEA of his own.
This is the 4th book (5th if you’re counting Edward’s book) in the Gentleman Courtesan Series. Aaaand Benedict’s story is next... Squeeeeee!!! And all I can say is “OMG!! OMG!! OOOOOOH EMMMMM GEEEEE!!!!”
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily review it and the comments are 100% my own.
My Star rating: 5 stars Ugly cried AF. Major book hangover. Characters and storyline were freaken amazeballs. Made me wanna hug the author for writing a book that gave me all the feels!! Will definitely be reading this story over and over and over again!!
Taming of the Rake is the fourth book in The Gentleman Courtesans series by Victoria Vale. It can easily be read as a standalone but as there are scenes where characters from the other books are mentioned then if you don't want spoilers you should maybe read those books first.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story because although having some steamy, passionate moments in it, it wasn't sex just for the sake of it, for selling books as it were. There was a fabulous story involving David, one of the Courtesans and the woman, Regina, who hires him. The last thing David is thinking of when he returns home to bury his father and take on the troubled estate he has inherited is taking on another Courtesan job. But when he realises that he desperately needs the income he asks his employer to find a 'keeper' for him. Fortunately, Regina lives close and is in need of his services. BUT she is nothing like he expects and that's where the story really gets interesting.
Add to that all that is involved with David and him finding out the whys and wherefores about the condition of the estate and why his mother and sisters are wearing threadbare mourning clothes and you will find yourself intrigued with what has happened.
More intrigue comes from London where Ben, the founding member of the Gentleman Courtesans has to fight to stop a secret gossip from revealing all to the public about his business and the men who work for him. He can't have their reputations ruined especially as they are his friends, plus some of them are married and the last thing they want is for society to find out what they used to be.
The story really had it all, it made me run the gamut of emotions including tears at one point, so don't forget to have a tissue ready. Regina and David are perfect for each other, but can he convince her of that. Will she insist on sticking to their contract which could break both of their hearts.
Just a heads up if you have been reading the series, the epilogue in this book is a doozy in preparation of the next book which is about Ben. I will say no more but be prepared for a surprise.
This series is definitely creating havoc on my sleep. I just had the compulsion to keep reading until I've finished all the books in the series.
David, one of the Gentleman Courtesans ia a rake with a big heart. His father died leaving him to inherit an estate that is crumbling around its ears. He had to take care of his mother whilst also ensuring the dowry for his 2 sisters. Apparently, the land steward has been embezzling the funds of the estate and the father was in his cups way too much in order to care. It's up to David to make sure everything is holding up. Enter, Lady Regina who happened to own a neighboring land. She was recently widowed and had suffered much abuse at the hand of her late husband. What she really wanted was a child of her own and she absolutely refused to marry again. She contracted David to act as her stud for hire.
Who doesn't love a rake? I wouldn't want to be married to one, but I adore them. David did try to do right for everyone around him. It was great seeing David helped Regina to heal the wounds from her pasts. Regina came across as cold earlier in the book, but that is to be expected due to her pasts. The grand gesture (where David tried to convince Regina to marry him) was one of the sweetest scenes I've ever come across. The pacing was good and the writing was lovely. This book put a smile on my face at the end of it.
Beautiful! I could happily imagine having a David in my life and why not! He's young, virile, good looking with a strong and beautiful body, clever, courteous, caring, attentive, knows how to keep a woman happy and so on and on. Seriously, I think Victoria broke the mold after she fashioned him out of her amazing imagination. Pity... (Lol!) What a beautiful story with two fabulous main characters in David and Regina who knew exactly what they wanted and did what needed to be done to get it. This is a story begging to be read!
Over the last year since I have been doing more book reviews on Amazon, I have read a fair number of books by this author, starting with her four-part The Villain duology—yes, this duology does have more than two books! I actually enjoyed the later books better than the first. I've also liked her newer series called Gentleman Courtesans. She writes historical, mostly erotic fiction, although not all of it is heavily erotica. I'm not in general a fan of erotica; I don't mind steamy, but most erotica generally crosses a line that I don’t typically don't walk. It can be too crude and even “icky.” In these two series, the author has mostly skirted that line—at least well enough for me to enjoy the books (though I did skip the second book in this series as it has power exchange elements I never enjoy in a romance).
My favorite book in this series was about Hugh the painter. Unfortunately, I was not as wild about this particular book. It took too long to get to the good stuff. The first scene is quite fun and sounded like a rollicking good time for everyone involved. But once we meet the heroine, the entire tone shifts. This could have been fine if the author didn't stay in that space for too long. The heroine had a horrific past with an abusive husband that undermined her sense of self-worth and made her leery of all men, though the author doesn't really talk about specifics until later in the book. As such, she is very walled-off and hence very different from the outgoing hero. Contrasts, of course, can be good in romances, but I felt like it brought down the entire tone of the book to something quite different from the rest of the books in this series. Until the heroine’s realization of the shackles she had put on herself because of her past and her desire to then break free, the book isn't that interesting. I actually felt a little sorry for the hero to have to put up with her. And, certainly, what should have been lovely intimate moments just completely fell flat in comparison to what this author typically writes. (Yes, they were in character—if a little histrionic at times—but were such downers.) I didn’t like the way she treated the hero, especially after their intimate moments. Around the 50% mark of the book is when the heroine does have that realization, but it felt like a long slog to get through to arrive at that pivotal point and then to the more interesting parts of the book.
I liked the hero. He could have potentially have been the fun rake that we like to see in Regency romance on occasion. Unfortunately, we only got to see it in the first scene and then after the 50% mark of the book. I love that he was so caring about his mother and sisters. He certainly had quite a shock at the beginning of the book and had to become a more responsible person, but he is up for the challenge (even though he still keeps up his courtesan work). The reason why the heroine wanted a courtesan was completely different compared to the other books—and actually a great premise—and could have been so well explored in this book because it was unique. But instead, the author chose to focus on the darker aspects of the heroine's past which really did darken that first half of the book, unfortunately. I did feel, too, that compared to some of the author's other books I’ve read in this series and The Villain duology, this book bordered more on erotica in that latter half. Again, as I'm not a fan of that kind of terminology or ways of expressing sensuality, I didn’t particularly like that here. I have enjoyed other books by this author, so I will certainly continue to check them out. And I am fascinated by what will happen with Benedict, the ringleader of the gentleman courtesans. He is the hero of the next book, which will probably be the end of the series, one that I imagine will solve the courtesan’s conundrum with The Gossip—an overarching storyline that has been featured briefly in each man’s book. So I will definitely read that one. I just wish the book had more of the fun sensuality that the other books in this series have had.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Taming of the Rake is about one of last remaining original Gentleman Courtesans, David Graham. David loves women and loves his job and makes good money doing what he likes, but when duty calls, he hurries home to help his family. He finds he still needs the money, so asks Benedict for help. He receives a contract that will give him the influx of money he needs. The only catch? He has to get the client pregnant.
I love the concept of the Gentleman Courtesans (GCs), and I adore the idea of this story. Both of the main characters are very likable, and their chemistry is hot enough to burn up the pages. Sizzling doesn't even start to cover how hot the sex in this book is. I loved seeing the other GCs and their wives and knowing not only are they happy, but the wives seem to have a created a sisterhood of their own. I loved seeing other characters from the shared universe, such as Lady Dane and mention of the trio from Tempting Two. I love the language in this book. There were sentences I would read, pause, read again, then close my eyes and just savor them. Ms. Vale has always been fantastic at descriptions, and the ones here are no exception. Her internal understanding of the characters is amazing. I also loved the introduction of the next wave of GCs (I mean, they’re all getting paired off, someone needs to take care of the business). Benedict’s protégé looks like he’ll be a bit of fun.
I liked this book, which kind of depresses me, because I wanted to LOVE this book. To me, it was too easy. Of the two antagonists from the beginning, only one gets his comeuppance, and I thought he got off light. I expected a HEA, but I don’t think they worked hard enough for it. As for the twist, I can’t say it took me by surprise, because I saw hints in the other books, and then a glaring sign at the beginning of this one. So when the big reveal came, it wasn’t so much of a shock or surprise, but an acknowledgement of what I already figured out.
Overall, I was entertained by this book. It was a quick read, and I’m sure if Darcy Stark does the audiobook, it will be delicious to listen to. I liked this book, but I wish I could say I loved it.

I really enjoyed this book It is a great story about David, the most lighthearted and irreverent of the Gentleman Courtesans and Regina, his new ‘keeper.’ Although it is part of a series, it can definitely be read as a stand-alone. David has to return home for his father’s funeral, and to take over caring for his mother and twin sisters. He discovers the family estate has been criminally mismanaged and is on the verge of collapse. David realizes that he really needs the income from a Courtesan job. Ben, the founder and orchestrator of the Gentleman Courtesans, offers him an arrangement with a woman very close by to him. Regina is a young widow who has very specific requirements regarding the his services. She is not at all what his extensive and varied experience with women has prepared him to expect, and he is intrigued by her. Further intrigue this book comes from London where Ben continues in his efforts to stop a gossip columnist from revealing the Gentleman Courtesans to the public.
This is an emotional story, with everything from laughter to tears. I like how it stresses importance of friendship in all its forms. David and Regina are perfect for one other, but they both have to recognize and accept what is right in front of them. It will especially be difficult for her, because she has a heartbreaking history of being abused. They both really deserve a happy ending to their story. There are several excellent secondary characters. Powell, Regina’s loyal footman, definitely deserves his own happy ever after.
The epilogue in this book prepares us for the next book, which is about Ben. I was legitimately startled by it! Vanessa Vale always has a surprise in store for us.

This new story of the Gentlemen Courtesans is amazing. David has the responsibility of his late father's estate and of his mother and twin sisters. Their home is crumbling around them and David needs to find a way to solve his cash problem. Benedict offers him a contract with a widow in his area. When he meets Regina, she offers an unconventional contract. It goes against David's guidelines but he needs the money so he agrees. Regina is suffering from the abuse of her late husband and trusts no man with the exception of her manservant Powell. There was much conflict between David and Regina but eventually she slowly began to trust him. His patience and care were the deciding factors. What Regina's late husband did to her made my heart go out to her. She was young naive and trusting and her husband betrayed and abused her in all ways. David had his work cut out for him. In the meantime, in London, Benedict was trying to discover the identity of the infamous London Gossip. He was doing all he could to thwart her and a little at a time was succeeding. He had his suspicions but had to wait for confirmation. Back in the country, David was falling in love with Regina. But things went sideways and they stopped seeing each other. David left for London to meet up with the former courtesans that had married along with Benedict. He came up with an idea to woo Regina into marrying him. In London Benedict was in high dungeon when his past came calling on him. What an exciting episode. A must read. You will not be disappointed.
