I'm not really sure how to review my own book, so I'll maybe write a little bit about it. I started writing again mid 2018 after publishing my first book An Ocean of Grey in April 2018. Like with the first book, I didn't write poetry/prose to publish it, but to express myself and make sense of my thoughts. Eventually when I had a number of pieces written, i started compiling it into a document and from there I started documenting my journey in life (mostly the love aspect of it) through writing. When I had about two thirds of this book compiled, I decided that it might be good to publish this as well, seeing as quite a few people had liked my first book.

I remember reading one of the reviews for my first book saying they wished that the illustrations for my book were more consistent in style. Of course that wasn't really possible for the first book because I had many of my friends contribute their own drawings to accompany my poems. I did like the idea of that comment, and decided to have the illustrations for this book more consistent. Hence, I picked three illustrators from my first book with art styles I adore (i wish i could have picked more but i think 3 was the best number for consistency) and approached them to work with me. It was also a great opportunity to give them a platform to showcase their art and get recognition for it. I'm very grateful that A Wave of Dreams had Rizal Aziz, Aisyah Shakirah and Adora Kamalia to glue the poems together with their art.

And i just knew i needed to have Rizal Aziz design my front cover again! The cover art isn't just a random heart with bits and colours on it; it symbolised many aspects of my life now. For example the flowers represented growth, the bee is an easter egg because my new partner and I met on Bumble hehe and omg the colours! The colours and the brightness of the overall cover is exactly what I wanted my book to show. Putting it next to my first book, the contrasting colours and vibe shows that my second book is a different, happier chapter of my life. Yes there are still sad poems in it, more than i would like, but it leads to happier ones. There are also easter eggs on the front and back cover and also in the book, which i love the idea of.

Oh yes, and the book title! This was so difficult to choose, whereas with the first book it was taken from one of the titles of the poems i wrote. It was tricky because we wanted to pair the title to match the theme of the first book. It needed to be A/An ___of ___. Literally nothing sounded right for months, I remember discussing possibilities with Adora in April 2019 and came up with "A Sprinkle of White", which doesn't sound right at all, but i ended up writing a poem based on that title haha but it was renamed to "daisies". And later in July 2019 Nabilah came up with "waves" to use in the title somewhere since it's in theme with "ocean", and so a list of possible titles was made. It was in Nov/Dec 2019 that we finalised it to A Wave of Dreams. And honestly, i love it! The are a couple of pieces in the book referencing to dreams of different kinds, and i like that it sounds kinda magical too because it was the vibe i was going for, in contrast to An Ocean of Grey which was supposed to sound a little depressing because the book was just full of sadness. This book was initially going to be published on 21st April 2020, exactly 2 years after An Ocean of Grey was published. But due to the Covid-19 situation the team thought it was best to postpone it to a better time. Things seemed to be okay in June so we went for it, and here we are! It took more than a year but we did it!

Anyway, as excited as i am to publish this (i'm writing this before official publication), I'm also very nervous, because it isn't the first book. There's going to be comparisons for sure, which is honestly scary. I think i'm hoping that at the very least, there will be appreciation for the art in this one. If people like my writing then that's amazing too. I hope there's something in it that readers will resonate with.

Thank you to the team at Meraki Press for making all this possible once again.

After the well-loved An Ocean of Grey, Kamalia Hasni (our dear Malie!) returns with the anticipated second chapter of her personal account of love, A Wave of Dreams. I was fortunate to have placed my order during the pre-order period as together with book, I received a lovely button badge which matches the book cover and a sheet of beautiful stickers – soon will I use in my 2020 Kokuyo Jibun Techo planner (which I would highly recommend for your daily journaling needs!).

I started reading this poetry + art book with the expectation that it will contain mostly happy poems to distinguish between her first book and to illustrate the fact that Malie is now happily married with the love of her life (Alhamdullilah!). So while the share of poems from her healing journey was necessary, I do acknowledge (on my part) that there was an initial dip in momentum when I realised this book is still largely a transition between her past and her happily ever after. Once I established this and started seeing it as a journey towards true love, I could appreciate the flow more and it made a difference to the overall reading experience.

bursting

There is so much love in me to give, it is sometimes so exhausting to keep it all in.

There were many poems I enjoyed and could really relate to – on finding true love and experiencing the lost of a friendship. Ones on the latter, in particular, really moved me as for years, I was hurting from the fact that a dear friend of mine had cut me off all the sudden. Fortunately, she finally reconnected with me this year and apologised. Malie’s poems brought back bitter memories of our lost years, but also the hope for better ones to come.

I must note how significant the beautiful illustrations were in bringing her poetry to life. Even though the art was more consistent in this book (as there were only 3 illustrators this time), I somewhat missed how it took a big group of close friends to bring An Ocean of Grey together – it takes a village to raise a child – that was a very special aspect for me, and made the first book more special in its own way. Nonetheless, do welcome the illustrations in this book with open arms – the colourful pages will take you on a delightful adventure.

All in all, Malie’s second book was a heartwarming read and I would encourage you to follow her writing journey, as she continues to grow. Her words remind us there is much love to be found and shared, be it from a lover, family or even friends. You will be found.

you will be found

Everybody searches for love. You. You are love, and someday love will be found.

A Wave Of Books is an art + poetry book that will take you on a voyage through the waves of love, hope and the warmth of the people around you. Its honestly raw, vibrant and uplifting. I know people say that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but please do so for this book because just as the cover is absolutely gorgeous, the contents inside is remarkably a thousand times better.

First of all, let me talk about the art! Its all seriously so breathtaking and it compliments really well with the pieces that what was written. Every time I read a page, I'd always look forward to the next and I feel like I wanted to just stare at the illustrations all day long. The illustrators are really talented and they made the pages more colourful and alive. They truly deserve more recognition.

Kamalia Hasni is a mastermind of lyrical words and I can feel the emotions seeping through the pages. It will certainly touch the heart of every reader to feel inspired and empowered by this book. For this one, it takes you on the path towards love again as the writer gives it a second chance. It makes you feel hopeful and I hope that someday I could find the kind of love I can call my home. It also briefly touches on healing and the longing of living across the ocean, away from the familiarity and the starting life anew.

I am so blessed and grateful that I was given the chance to read an advance copy because this book is really wonderful. Its the kind of book that I could easily read in one sitting but I must refrain myself because I wanted to soak in every detail of this book from cover to cover. I hope that you will pick this book up too and feel what I felt too with this art + poetry book titled, A Wave Of Dreams.

Kamalia has once again created another beautiful collection of poetry, along with the artwork by Rizal, Adora and Aisyah that complement each piece so well.

Some of my favourites in this collection are 'grateful', 'promises', 'forgiveness' and 'bloom'.

What I enjoyed most about this book was the rawness in how Kamalia has penned down her emotions, her thoughts and everything that has happened to her. I felt as if I truly went along this ride of many ups and downs with the author as Kamalia finds her way through her heartbreak and finding herself and new hope. This book shows you that healing really isn't a linear process, but with time and letting yourself take risks in life, you will eventually reach a better place.

By the time I finished reading this poetry book, I was a sobbing mess. Yes, I cry whenever I find a book is good and touches me to the core. Following the author’s journey of heartbreak, healing and learning to love again, the poems feel like a diary which are so full of raw emotions that I didn’t knew she was feeling so much things deeply and she was able to express in the form of words. To be honest, it reminds me of Taylor Swift’s song lyrics, the words were simple but at the same time so emotionally powerful and you can just imagine if you were in the writer’s shoes. The art done by the talented young artists which complements every poem inside are just so stunning and really fitting, it’s like they translated the author’s words perfectly into another form of art. If you ever wonder what true love genuinely feels like, I really recommend reading this poetry book. It’s honest, warm— you can almost feel the love of the author for her soulmate.

Despite of the bittersweet taste that this book desires to achieve, I personally resonated with the depressing writings more than I expected. Perhaps that's what writing do to you, it helps you conjure your thoughts into a sheet of paper and verbalize it into existence. Needless to say, I'm so happy that the author decided to publish a part of her lives. I've always loved the first book, but I was not under the same condition that the writer was in, until a few months back when similar things started happening to my life. Now, I'm trying my best to lift myself up from what has happened. I hope with the writings in this piece, it'd help me feel less grey by a few shades hehe. Thank you so much for documenting this piece.

Also, top-notch illustrations! I'm following them on every social media this instant!

I just finished my 70th book of the year! Yipee!

Congratulations, Malie on your second poetry book. I remembered getting An Ocean Of Grey whilst I was studying in the UK and how excited I was to receive a book from Malaysia.
When I saw A Wave Of Dreams at Kinokuniya yesterday, I was in awe. We've never even met and known each other IRL but I remembered feeling so proud of you - it was heartwarming to see your books on the shelves of my favourite bookstore. What's more, your books were surrounded by all of these amazing talents as well! Who wouldn't be proud?

First and foremost, I read this book in one sitting. Reading poetry books while you're in a reading slump really helps, so thank you. I love love love the illustrations; all of the illustrators did a wonderful job complementing your lovely poetry & proses. I'm happy that you finally found love and happiness. You truly deserve it. I hope that you're doing well in the UK and I can't wait for more works from you in the future.

Kudos.

i started reading this last month or so and got busy halfway into the book. and then, i had forgotten to continue it.

though i have to admit i am no fan of modern poetry, malie had once again pulled me into the world she created through her poems, this time, a wave of dreams.

she used such simple words with such deep meanings, and i, once again, was brought into her universe of heartbreaks and love and friendship and beautiful, beautiful turning point. it was as if i was experiencing it all. it was as if i was malie. i felt her pain and her love. and for that i have to say, what a great writer you are, malie.

despite all the good things i have said above, i think my reading journey was slightly disturbed because my copy was an ebook. it somehow distorted the alignments and all.

oh, i almost forgot. the illustrations were FIRE as usual!!!

Randomly picked up this book out of curiosity and i did not regret it at all. So beautiful, with illustrations and a song to accompany each poetry. The way Kamalia describes her feelings makes you love each and every word written like a warm cup of tea.

Perfect, just perfect. If i were to ever have a poetry book of my own, this book is pretty much how i picture it might be.

Okay, time to get my hands on An Ocean of Grey.

I saw about this book about a few times on my timeline. When I went to Kinokuniya to top-up my October reading materials, I found this beautiful book. The first thing that attracted my attention was the illustrations. I thought I already have enough share of poetry this year, but this book instantly gave the vibes that I will enjoy the reading journey. I was not wrong at all.

Just like the title, reading this book made me feel I was riding the waves of emotion between hopes, fears, and loves.

I have a few favorites from this book and one of them is * The Secret *

It takes accepting that we change.
Healing takes having faith
That there is a destination
At the end of the bumpy road.

I have such a good reading journey with this book. Alhamdulillah. The arts really compliment these beautiful pieces.

This book got me out of my reading slump fr. A well-written, bittersweet book that was enjoyable to read all the way through. Credentials for Rizal Aziz and Adora Kamalia are just as deserving as those for the author because their exquisite works of art harmoniously compliment one another.
