Some humans eagerly await Collection Day, living their lives in preparation for that day when representatives of the Gods are sent out to pick one human from each of the six regions of Godsfell. Those Collected go to Godsvail Academy, the impenetrable school where cruelty reigns. But humans and Descendants alike compete for one thing - the right to Ascend. The Academy is treacherous, and enemies lurk around every corner. None are worse than the five Descendants who are determined to torment me. Break me. All I’d wanted was to live out my very human life in my snow-covered Northern village, where my body and my will would be my own. But the Gods and their Descendants have other plans for me. And I’ll be lucky to survive.
Disclaimer: Impure is Book One of the Ascension series, a paranormal reverse harem romance set in an academy. This whychoose is set in a different city-state of the same world as InkHaven Academy, but none of the characters will be familiar. As always, it features m/m as well as m/f and group scenarios, but also features scenes that may be triggering for some.
I don't usually review books I do not finish (DNF) - as this feels unfair. If I don't really read it, who am I to say? That said (hypocritical, I know)... sometimes I do NEED to review a book I DNF, who knows? Maybe the reason I didn't finish it is the reason YOU will love it!
Pros: ~ The premise is very interesting. ~ World building is, at times, palpable. ~ Writing itself isn't bad.
Cons: ~ Move aside Dub-Con, we've got Non-con, public humiliation and sexual assault. ~ Bully romances are one thing, but this is a step further, dark or not. There doesn't seem to be a path to redemption here, nor does the author imply we should want one. ~ Wishy Washy FMC. The beginning pages were great! She seemed strong, with a set of convictions I could get behind. Then that strength quickly turned into her own form of angst and bullying. Her mouth is her tool, which is fantastic, but she defaults to insults and barbs far too quickly - even in situations when it doesn't' seem necessary. I am not saying she should grovel and spew that respect crap the Gods crave, fuck that, but preemptive insults are not strength. They are immaturity and a toddler throwing a tantrum. ~ The guys. They blend together in one conglomerate of cruelty - I really can't tell one from the other, or care to. Except Tate. He stood out for a moment. Not sure that is good though.
So, there it is. Take it how you will - and let me know what you think of this book. You just may love it! Seriously. That's the joy of variety, eh? There's something for everyone.
I've never had such a hard time reviewing a book usually I either love a book or hate it. To be fair I'll share both sides.
First the writing of this book was awesome, the world was interesting and pretty original, the story was easy enough to follow without being to complicated or boring, as a matter of a fact I'd have given it a much higher rating except...
I absolutely hated the men in this story there wasn't a single redeeming or likable moment about them until well after 50 percent of this book.
I have read bully and dubcon books before and liked them so that wasn't the issue, however them pretty much r*ping her (think drugs or mind magic) when at that point there hadn't even been a second of us liking them, yeah that's hard to swallow, and her just basically getting over it? Kinda not my thing. Pretty much until after 70 percent of the book I was just hoping they'd all die and a new set of guys would appear.
However here's the thing the book got good... Now that all the bully drama is gone I can forsee the next book being quite good.
So pick up this book if u want to suffer through 50 percent of unlikable crud to get the the good stuff and a probably great sequal.
Impure is an intense bully read. The world building by Tove Madigan and Kenna Bardot was excellent, however, I would advise readers to pay attention to the trigger warning. It was difficult making it past the first 50% of the book (very dubious consent scene, which is not my thing), and the male characters are not nice (at all).
The female lead starts off strong, but I was a little disappointed in how she handled the guys and their actions. The men started taking steps to redeem themselves late in the book and the FMC seemed to find her inner strength again—both of which I was glad to read. I am ready to see how the story will continue in book 2.
What a book! What a story! Absolutely insanely good. Another review I read likened it to a “curse of the gods x hunger games” and I have to agree but way waaaaaay darker. I am really not a fan of bully romances but really enjoyed this book even though it was hard to get through sometimes. But totally totally worth it. And I definitely can’t wait for the next book!
Interesting take on the usual NA/academy bully trope, mixing it with PNR. The book is a slow to start, which is where it lost a star, but bear with it because it becomes fascinating. A delightful mix of Mean Girls and Hunger Games. There’s a ton of steam and chemistry between the characters. A really fun read and I look forward to the next book.
You can definitely tell two people wrote this story. The premise behind it is amazing. But the fluidity is nonexistent in so many places. And that coupled with the spelling errors. It was a time.
At the beginning when Mireyah first goes to the Collecting and comes and she gets into it with her sister there is something her sister is supposed to tell but didn’t tell her. I still don’t know what it is she was supposed to be told. There are a lot of scenes like that, that happen and they aren’t clear.
There is a point where Mireyah and Annalee go from being friends to enemies but there is no transition point. It’s like you end a chapter there going to dinner and then the very next chapter they hate each other. It’s choppy. And can be kind of knee jerky when reading.
The other issue I had was the constant immaturity as far the relationship goes. One moment she hates the guys and the next she slowly starts like them. They essentially violate her the first day she is Hollis’ Attendant and she doesn’t react or feel anything. It gets glossed over. Mind you this when she just meets them. But then when they essentially are all hanging out and they amplify her want for want for them and take out her stubbornness she goes balls to the walls upset. But it only last for like a week with Shep and Hollis because they come to he rescue because she got beat up. And then like a week later she forgives Tate and Ryle. Both situations are bad. But I feel had she reacted the way she should have the first time the second time would not have happened. I don’t know this section of time with their relationship was so confusing and I don’t want sound judge because everyone handles these situations differently.
So all in all the story line and premise is really good how it’s presented could be better. Not sure if book 2 does a better of that. Also not sure if I will be finding that out.
I'll come back to review this when I can get my thoughts together. I will say this: the authors have slapped warning and trigger labels on this and have told the reader that they are about to get a very dark read. I can respect that. I expected it. That is why this is two stars instead of 1.
While I expected dark though, I can't say I particularly liked how things played out or how much of an irritating twat I found the MC to be.
Ok, so this is my first review in English so i apologies for the grammar and/or the error .
I subscribe the ARC tem of Bardot and Tove after reading InkHaven Academy series witch I liked a lot and was one of the lucky one and got it for free . This is a dark reverse harem bully romance and they nailed it , I really loved this book and loose a night sleep over , I couldn’t put it down. So… The story is not a new one , but is well written and the context is what I supposed will be if the Goods walk among us . The main character is Mireyah a girl born and rise in a harsh climate were the sun never shine for long, is a perpetual winter time and like her home so is she. Strong , Harsh and she really , really dislike the goods who treats humans and the human world lihe they play thing. The tradition dictate that at 18 some are choose to better themselves … bullshit , they are choose to better the life of the goods and their Descendands whom live at Godsvail Academy till have the chance to ascend and became Gods themselves . The Descendants are the worst ( think bored rich kids ) and amuse themselves bulling the humans and Mireyah fall on the radar of the worst 4 , the kings of Godsvail Academy . About them, I have mixed fillings; in the first half of the book I wanted to kill them myself , there are some situation which include rape in my opinion and I’m not cool with it not even in a fiction situation … Then they try to redeem themselves but not enough, also in my opinion The book overall is about sacrifice, struggle and personal growth of the characters and open the road to a very good series witch I cannot wait to devour ….
Ok so there were some definite parallels between Ascension and Curse of the Gods by Jane Washington and Jaymin Eve. However, it was different enough that I still loved it and absolutely devoured it in 24 hours. I do feel there was a lack of development of scenes with time gaps/skips that would have benefited the whole story if there’d been fleshed out. This single book would have made an amazing 2-3 series. Although I felt a good connection with the characters and their relationship with each other, filling in those time gaps would have cemented it all together beautifully and brought the whole story from a 7 to a 10. There’s not a lot of crossover between InkHaven and Ascension until the very end. I felt a little confused as to how these two series are in the same world as one has the whole time tattoo thing and this one doesn’t. I don’t feel like that was explained at all..but, regardless, I loved this world and the struggle of path to godhood these mortals and immortals take. I’m excited to see what this next trial will bring and hope to see Mireyah and the boys together again—especially with lots of sandwiches.
I love this story. Mireyah grew up hating the Gods and the Descendants because of the way they treat humans. One thing I love about Mireyah is that even though she hates the Gods and has openly voiced her opinion on the subject she does not force people to believe her opinion. For example her younger brother Varo, she wanted him to grow up and form his own opinion about how they are treated and the Gods for himself. Yes the story took a while to get into but it got really good later. So she is sent to this academy where she interact with descendants and five in particular; Tate, Ryle, Charolais, Shephard, and that horrible Hollis are like the popular guys in school. She also meets Annalee who is very blunt in her statement but is also the mean girl. With the exception of the rape scene (which is kinda of described as a person either high or drunk and semi-aware of what's going on) I actually started liking some of the guys. Overall it was an enjoyable read. I will continue this series.
I wanted to like it more because I really enjoyed the InkHaven series, but FMC was so neurotic and back-and-forth with her emotions I was getting dizzy from it all. One minute she wants them, then she doesn't; she leads them on to make them prove how much they want her, prove how sorry they are. Argh. That just disgusted me. She gets upset because she said they were toying with her emotions, but yet she turns around and plays with the 5 Descendants emotions and it's okay because she has to make sure what she feels is "real". Please! Stuff like just annoys me. The guys keep says they like her with words and actions, but she believes a conniving, witch over them. As the story progressed, I just found myself looking the FMC less and less. Where is came across as strong in the beginning, as the story continuing she just started to become stubborn, cold-hearted, insecure, and selfish. Her character really just muddied the plot for me.
This story is exactly how I imagined the gods would treat humans if they interacted with them. The main character, Mireyah, struggles with the reality of her situation and her strong distaste for the gods. Having grown up in the frigid north, her feelings for the gods reflect the harsh conditions she and her people have been forced to endure. Once Mireyah is summoned to present herself to the gods for the collection her life is turned upside down and inside out. This is a great story of survival and growth despite the awful circumstances the character faces. I am curious to see what awaits Mireyah in the next installment of this story. *Not everything the character faces is negative.
This book had literally 0 character building with the boys other than the fact that they’re terrible people. It could have been a really good story but there was no world building, terrible dialog and inner monologue, and really a lack of information presented. The Information that was presented was just thrown at you with the hope that you’d understand later in the book. Not very promising. The Challenge was a big part of the story and there was no information about what it was and the history of it and that was kind of annoying. The FMC claims to be strong willed and showed acts of defiance, but stopped fighting the second the boys wanted her. She just forgave all of the guys randomly even after all the stuff they put her through. Literally wanted to DNF 20% in.
FMC has the one thing happen to her that she has always dreaded, a one-way ticket to Godsvail where she is meticulously bullied by hot-as-sin descendants or future gods I should say. She is soon thrown into a challenge to the death that she just has to survive. This is typical RH Bully to lovers and a fun storyline that can go in so many directions over the series.
This book is hot and all kinds of messed up. Then again it is a dark bully RH so the theme is the epitome of messed up. FMC won't let them break her. She is snarky and headstrong even in the face of intense bullying. I was about brought to tears at one point due to the bullying. I don't usually read dark bully romances but this book was a good read.
Wow wow wow! Gods I loved this book. The writing is just brilliant, as is the story. The MC is one of the strongest, bravest women with such incredible integrity and character, I loved her. The bullying that she lived with first from her men and from the other humans was tantamount to torture and she did not break, even that one scene which whilst being so hawt also made me feel sick.... The raw emotions, the world building, everything! I laughed, I cried, I felt sick with fear and disgust and horror, I feel like I've run the full emotional gambit and now am on tenterhooks for book 2. Truly brilliant.
This book for me was just ok. At first it seemed a little rapey to me. I mostly liked the MC but didn’t understand the Descendants. I would have liked more chapters with their POV. I didn’t feel a connection to any of them. It felt they were bullying her because they could but then they switched on a dime and decided they all liked her. It would have been nice to hear their thoughts as they started to change her mind and want more from her. This book had a lot of repeat scenes and went on and on with same thing new day that made the book drag for me. Not sure yet if I will read the next one.
Read for the B.A.N.G. Book Club 2022 Challenge - Reverse Harem category
Enemies to lovers bully romance. The men are Descendants of the Gods, h is a lowly human. Echoes of the Hunger Games in the challenges that must be undertaken to ascend to the next level of existence. The world building is slow and there’s a lot of suspension of disbelief required as you try to piece the puzzle together. The Hs are haughty and cruel, h is alternately rebellious and resigned. Things pick up about halfway and by the end it's a great read. Needs a good edit to fix missing words and some clumsy grammar. I will read on to finish the series.
Wow that story really took me on a ride. Couldn’t even put book down. Another great story written by these two authors. And the series continues on which made me so happy. Story is a little darker and a bully read so be warned. But wow I loved it. Like really loved it. I hope book 2 comes out quickly. This is definitely a must read series. You will absolutely fall in love with the main character and want to smack her men. I know I did. Again I loved this story and counting down till next book.
Ok, wow. I had never heard of the authors Bardot and Madigan before I decided to read this book. I can't help but wonder, why? Because this book was amazing. It has the same premise as the Curse of the Gods series by Jaymin Eve, but with far better rated R scenes!! It is however, different enough to not be the same story. If you don't mind amazingly explict sexual content (not that I can imagine who wouldn't want to read those scenes) then you need to read this book immediately. I can't wait to see what else these authors have written.
This is why i hate readying a series when not all the books are out. It was so good I want to read what else happens but I can't cause book 2 isn't out yet! There was a moment towards the beginning where i was like ummm I don't know but once I got past that I was hooked. I really enjoyed the actual plot also. I can't wait to see what else is in store for our girl! I really want to see how this next step is going to work.
Love love love love this book!! The story was awesome! The FMC was such a badass which I live for!! I would definitely categorize this book as an RH bully romance. I do have to say it was a pretty long book. I would say probably a bit longer than my ideal book length, but that obviously didnt impact my love for the story. I would for sure recommend this book to any who loves PNR RH bully stories. Very well done! Cant wait for the next one!!
Kenna and Tove are incredible at world-bullding and this is another one that sucks you in from the start. I would argue this is probably my favourite book from them so far (although I love them all). Impure will appeal to fans of reverse harem across multiple other genres. If you're not a fan of darkness in your romance there may be some moments that are a bit much but in general the darkness is well balanced and adds to the story.
I loved this book! Such a wonderful start to a series!! I loved the FMC Mireyah is tough, strong and resilient who also has a need to protect her loved ones. The guys in this book took some warming up to at first I have to admit! I’m looking forward to seeing the relationship development and grow between Mireyah and the guys in future books. This book had everything from suspense, intrigue, romance, bullying and its kind of dark!! I can’t wait for the next book!!
So the book is well I'll just say sex sex sex slave .now don't get me wrong I did like the book however the main character is spineless at least till he end it took of in the middle where the games start ,the book was well written no flaws in writing I did like the book only reason I didn't give 5 because I wish the main character faught just didn't give in I mean she was kind of a push over but twords the end I did enjoy .
What a rollercoaster of emotions you go through in this book! Poor Mireyah so much happens in such a short time. I hope the next book will give her some happiness, but I foresee more turmoil ahead for her and her men. The games remind me a lot of the Hunger Games but god style. It was a very interesting read that hooked me from the 1st few chapters. Can't wait to read the 2nd installment!!!
I really enjoyed this book from page 1 to the last. It reminds me of curse of the gods by Jaymin Eve and Jane Washington but more adult with the sex scenes and some of the other circumstances which is great because curse of the gods is one of my favorite series, now I can add this to the list of go to reads. Can’t wait till the series is complete so I can read it with my book club.
Started out really interesting but I actually felt angry at the way the boys treated her. The book points out the horrible stuff but yet doesn't really show why she starts to care about them. They pretty much "drug" her and then rape her. And after a couple days she forgives them. I get the enemy part in the enemy to lovers theme but not really the lovers part. Plus I don't like M\M.
This was a very enjoyable book. It was a little slow to get into it at the beginning but if you stick with it its definitely worth it! I would say it has a curse of the gods vibe meets hunger games. But a DARK version of both so make sure that is something you are OK with! All of the guys definitely grow on you. Tate is a favorite followed by Shep. The intimate scenes are steamy!!!
We all knew there was going to be some kind of MM action in the book. I felt like the reveal of the guys being together didn't feel organic. I know they purposefully kept it secret but there could have been a couple of hints ahead of time to help with the Reveal. There were also some typos throughout the book, but overall it was a fun read and I can't wait for the next book!
I enjoyed this book. It's a paranormal bully rh. The bullying wasn't the worst I've read so I think that is a good thing. The FMC is strong and stubborn as I think she has to be the face what she does and put up with the guys. At first, the guys don't seem to have many redeeming qualities but they grow on you as the book continues. I am excited to see where the series goes from here!
