This is completely unresearched, jerky, at times unpleasant and populated by characters I don't like. An American woman with ten years of journalism experience and working for a tiny publication is staying in a hotel in Knightsbridge. Good luck paying that bill. She is jogging with a can of anti-attack spray in her pocket. No she's not, unless it's fly spray. Pepper spray etc. is illegal in UK. If she'd tried bringing it in her luggage it would have been taken away at the airport. A business has secretly installed this: 'On the screen was the x-ray scanned data of a five hundred meter perimeter outside the gate. Ciaran was about to ask something, but Lindsay said in anticipation, “Robert kept a very tight lid on the scanner. We know it’s not strictly legal."'
D.N. Leo. Random Psychic - A Shade of Mind - Book 1 (Kindle Locations 349-350). Narrative Land.
Every physicist in the world would roll around laughing if you told them this. Or shriek in horror. Any machine producing X-rays which travelled for 500 metres, would be causing severe radiation burns in those unlucky enough to walk through the rays. Their likelihood of developing cancer would shoot upwards as unshielded X-rays are a carcinogen. If you get an X-ray in a hospital or dentist's practice, that room is shielded with lead and radiographers keep a safe distance. 'Enforcement of radiation protection (There is a duty of care to patients, colleagues and any lay persons that may be irradiated.)' : Wikipedia. So obviously this is illegal, and would be noticed very fast by passers by, employees and local hospitals. The cases for damages and court fines would bankrupt the firm and no, their insurer would not cover the firm.
A young woman has been kidnapped and is being held hostage, threatened with physical harm, as follows: ' "Zen beat Jo, and he’s threatened to rape her if I can’t find this guy.” There was a long pause. “And you didn’t think calling the cops should be your first course of action?” “How fast do you think the cops can pull their acts together in this case? Zen didn’t ask for money or anything that the cops can leverage on. He wanted me to get information about a computer geek. Getting information is what I do for a living, Stephen. He sent me Jo’s necklace and said if I make one wrong move, he’ll kill Jo.”
D.N. Leo. Random Psychic - A Shade of Mind - Book 1 (Kindle Locations 609-613). Narrative Land.
So this journalist who researches for a living, did not call the police or FBI to save her friend. Why didn't she research kidnapping and learn that it is a federal crime and the FBI will respond? That's just plain kidnapping. The rape and death threats are made over video phone but are not recorded by her in any way, because, I suppose, this journalist doesn't have a tape recorder or a camera, screenshot or tape function on her phone.
The drama gets very stupidly mixed up; with a computer game at the start, getting completely forgotten about as the lure of sending the character on a wild goose chase after something buried with John Dee takes the author's fancy, then aliens and robots are thrown in along with violence and alchemy, because why not. What about the poor kidnapped girl? Can we stick to the point? No, the putative heroine would rather go to bed with someone. Don't depend on her to save you.
A copy was sent to me. This is an unbiased review.
This could have been good, it’s a good premise. I don’t mind mediocre writing when the plot is good and the fact this book was pretty jerky with its scene transitions and general layout was excusable until this point.
Spoiler:
Ciaran is put under by a doctor who openly admits that Ciaran is allergic to the drug he used 🥴ok whatever cus apparently that drug just makes him “grumpy”
So he wakes up and is grumpy and just wants to go to his room. Madeline seductively says “I’m sorry your best friend was shot in the head last night” then shoved her tongue down his throat.. WHAT?
Then he leaves and she gets locked out of her hotel room, ends up in his, then she’s like.. angry with him? Then he flips out and trashes the hotel room and then they go to sleep in each others arms and are planning a life together
This is all like.. 1 chapter. And they just met 24hrs ago for the first time. I’m just so confused and feel like the author wasn’t expressing what they actually wanted to express?? Or did I miss something??
Anyways. That was the last straw and this is the last headspace the book will take up in my mind
Conspiracy, romance, parallel worlds, John Dee and alchemy are just a few of the topics that begin with a kidnapping. As Madeline resolves to rescue her friend, Ciaran tries to keep her alive as bullets fly, bombs explode, and lies and secrets threaten their future. There is never a dull moment and lots of suspense as characters appear, have a moment of heroism or villainy, and are gone. Yes it captivates, but side characters are stereotypes as they appear so briefly. Scenes shift abruptly and the action is almost frenetic. And the intrepid reporter, Madeline, jumps too quickly to conclusions and reacts before she knows the facts.
Madeline finds herself in a daze standing outside the London headquarters of a pharmaceutical conglomerate. Her best friend has been kidnapped in New York by her boss and she's been sent to London to track down an online MMRPG player with the handle of 'White Knight' and he was last logged on inside this corporate headquarters that is more like a fortress! If only she can survive the next 60 seconds...
D. N. Leo serves up a plate with an entree of intrigue and aliens with a side of zombies. If you're a fan of action, adventure, fantasy, and romance, this book was made for you. Her quest to save her friend leads her all over the English countryside and into the arms of Ciaran, the reclusive CEO of the pharmaceutical conglomerate, who is a riddle that she must solve! Though romance isn't my usual fare, it enhanced the plot to the point that I didn't figure it until I was almost 3/4 of the way through and by that time, it was as homogeneous to the plot as the characters themselves, it felt like I was in a Bond movie.
I've read plenty of crap books. Usually, they make me laugh more than anything, and I just move on to the next thing on my list of to dos. But this...
*shudders*
The lack of research, uninteresting characters, the nonsensical story, and the plain awful narration that was just the piss icing on the shit cake, all culminated in a deep regret of time lost. I have zero interest in whatever else may happen in this series. How is it even a series? How did this get published? I felt like I was being pranked the entire time I struggled through this book. So much dumb. I lost IQ points just for having read it.
3 ½ *** Fast-paced action/1st in a series, PN/sci-fi, romance- in that order of appearance. A newspaper reporter uses her job as a cover to investigate the mystery surrounding the kidnapping of her friend. Who can Madeline trust and what do they want? What are the blue dots trying to tell her and how do they really work? There seems to be some backstory dealing with them missing. Who or what really, is “White Knight”? What about Ciaran who in turn blows hot one moment and cold the next, like a modern Jekyll and Hyde? Only some of these questions are answered in book one. The rest, I would hope will have to wait for answers in further episodes.
Episodes that will probably bring up their own questions. There is an advantage of reading a completed series. No need to wait for the author to complete the next installment and then further waiting for editing and publishers to do their thing. All parts are available for immediate purchase (or borrow from wider-sellers and even libraries for those on a budget.) I listened to the EPUB with an “expressive” male voice-synth-reader program first, and an audiobook (a female voice) and have to admit both have their advantages. The professional production clears up some of the questions as to which character is speaking (most of the time, but could use some work on her accents). It is part of the longer box set and includes a seemingly longer epilogue. The male voice on expressive setting can be coded for an authentic British accent (and is of course male) so it gives the reader a better idea of how Ciaran and the other Brits might sound. So it is up to reader preference and of course, what one can get their hands on as to how to best enjoy this already entertaining story.
Now for the negatives: This is fairly well written, but I am surprised at the errors that made it all the way through to the voice production without being questioned. Maybe it was an attempt to make the dialogue more realistic by completely omitting some words according to the customary speech of a country to which I have never been. To my North American ears, they sound like mistakes. If actual Brits (or Aussies, as I have found upon research) happen to read this, I wonder what red-flags (or is it white cards for fowls there?) they would want to throw? Call me old-fashioned if you like, but I believe it is part of writers' (all writers, so my apostrophe IS in the right place) job to do their best to communicate clearly while informing, entertaining, or persuading us. Ms. Leo does a better job than some I have read lately to respect educated English Language usage. I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.
This is voluntary feedback of a work acquired through Booksprout (EPUB) and heard from Hoopla digital library. Many thanks to the author for making this available in a wide variety of formats and seller locations, so readers are not limited by equipment permissions (as is the case for some sellers I could mention).
Immobile, Madeline stared at the London double-decker bus that was racing toward her. At the last minute, a man grabbed her arm and pulled her back onto the sidewalk. When she refused to have coffee with him, she saw a look on his face as if his prey had somehow just escaped!
Madeline was in London to save her friend, Jo, who had been kidnapped by a madman. He threatened to kill Jo if Madeline did not track down information about the “White Knight” avatar for him. She had moved toward a pharmaceutical company to talk to a computer geek when the bus almost ran over her.
As Madeline walked back to her apartment instead, since she couldn’t get into the secured building, blue dots appeared in front of her. She had gained this psychic ability after an incident she did not want to think about. But it helped her find missing persons. And dots displayed if someone focused their thoughts on her. The dots moved toward an alley in Hyde Park, but after the near-miss with the bus, she ignored them and continued home.
Ciaran LeBlanc was the head of LeBlanc Pharmaceuticals. He came into contact with Madeline when she ran into him as they were jogging in the fog at Hyde Park. He agrees to an interview if she will go with him to dinner. Eventually they work together to complete her “mission” to save her friend. But it wasn’t all that clear to me that they will be successful! Who is the kidnapper? Why does he need Madeline to do this for him? And what will become of Jo?
This wasn’t a smooth-flowing story line for me. Madeline’s blue-dot psychic abilities seemed like something she had no clue about – didn’t know what it was, how it worked, what triggered or caused it, nor did she seem to have any control over it. It’s unclear about why the “White Knight” was significant and why Madeline was chosen to find him. I figure that we’ll learn more as we move into the next book(s) in the series. But it just felt a bit confusing to start off like this, such as her certainty that Peter was a predator even though the reader was given no hints at that when he saved her from the bus. Perhaps that was part of the “random psychic” ability? Anyway, I intend to keep on with the next book and see if things fall into place better for me then.
"Random Psychic" is book 1 in a series written by author D.N. Leo. It tells the story of Madeline, an American on a quest in London to find a mysterious gamer. Madeline meets local businessman, Ciaran, and he agrees to help her in her search. The two strangers help each other find their most immediate answers, but this only leads to more questions about their goal and themselves. The story is set mostly in London, but also includes visits to smaller villages in the English countryside. While the main characters are Madeline and Ciaran, the other characters are very much involved, and the story feels more like an ensemble piece than a focus on one or two main subjects.
This story is very fast-paced. I read it in a matter of hours. It does not get weighed down by extraneous dialogue or exposition. The reader is taken along on the journey, which allows for use of the imagination. For example, two specific locations are mentioned in the story. One I was familiar with, the other only by name. A quick image search of the second location immediately set the scene in my mind, and it gave me the opportunity to learn about a new place.
Madeline has a lot going on. She seems to be a tough cookie in a tougher place, and she handles it very well. She has her moments, but this makes her quite relatable. Her reactions are realistic to the situations she finds herself in. Ciaran is a man of mystery. Even with all that we learn, there are still more secrets that I want to know.
The book jumps right into the action from the very beginning, and the backstory is filled in along the way. While this could potentially be confusing, the author does a great job of tying most everything together. The things that are not answered will likely be addressed in future books (after all, you don't want to know everything all at once). The story has more mystery than I expected, and I very much enjoyed trying to figure out what was happening before the reveal (I didn't, which made it quite fun).
Overall, this is a fun, fast read, and I am looking forward to the sequels. Definitely recommend.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout in exchange for writing an honest review.
I wasn't sure what to expect with this book given the title of it. But boy, once I started reading the first few pages, the story took me right into the action of it all. Random Psychic is a very fast-paced book with twists and turns at every corner. There's also a very deep mystery that is hinted throughout the book with one of the main characters, Ciaran. And, oh, does Ciaran fit the perfect description of a brave and handsome genius! I didn't expect much from Ciaran at first, thinking that he wouldn't play as big of a part as the other main character, Madeline, but Ciaran's character was very well written. But I'll start with Madeline first. Her journey begins instantly with a threat to her life as she follows a mysterious blue dot that inadvertently hovers around her whenever the dots seem fit. Known as a psychic, Madeline isn't too aware of how to use her psychic abilities except to see these floating blue orbs, or dots, that appear on their own. She is desperately trying to rescue her best friend and meets Ciaran, the owner and founder of a huge pharmaceutical company. However, she didn't know that Ciaran was more than just some rich and smart guy. He is so much more and reading about him and discovering who he is along with Madeline was a delight! Random Psychic is more than just a story about a psychic. There is a deeper mystery within and not only with Ciaran's character. You get a glimpse into his private life and maybe, just maybe, a tidbit of what this mystery is. Meanwhile, Madeline has her own mysterious past that we have yet to learn about in the first book. Both of them have dire pasts that led them to their meeting and through trying to save her friend, Madeline and Cieran's friendship grew as well as a deep connection. I am literally chomping at the bit waiting for Book 2. The ending is a definite cliff hanger but the first book is such a fast read that you might be just as impatient as I am! Thank you for the ARC!

This is a book that I got through audible in a boxset. I had heard of the author but never read any of their books but I saw the description and it sounded like the kind of books that I enjoy. I gave this book a 4* rating, this was mainly because it took me awhile to get into this book, the first half of the book I found to be enjoyable but a little slow in the pacing of what occurs but when it hit halfway and the action really notched up a gear I found myself hooked and wanting to listen to the book as much as possible! The way that this book ended is a proper cliffhanger so I am so glad that I got the box set and am really excited to read the next book!
The storyline of this book is extremely intriguing and definitely makes you want to know more, it answers some questions but replaces them with even more questions that I am sure will be addressed in the next books, this makes you want to read on as well. I really liked that this was set in England. A lot of the books I read are based in America so it was a nice change to read about this kind of story in the country that I live in especially when the author is describing the setting and scenery, I could really see it in my own mind.
I really enjoyed how varied all of the characters were, they are all very unique in their own way and definitely make the book even more interesting and colourful to the reader.
This is a book I would definitely recommend as i did really enjoy it and I will definitely be following the author's work after reading this.

This was a very different story the plots was wonderful. As you find answers to some of your questions you are left with more unanswered. This is a very emotional book with a mad man using Madeline to get things he wants or he will kill her best friend. He uses every chance he gets to drive Madeline mad and over the edge using her friend saying either she does what he wants in a timely manner or he will rape and then kill her friend. There is one place where you think that is just what is going to happen but Madeline was able to talk him down. There are people or things chasing Madeline and it looks like they are trying to kill her. I am still unsure if they are from the future or if this might all be a mind game. This kind of reminds me of one of my favorite movies the Matrix. With the closure of book one you are left with the question of what just happened is Ciaran a human or a machine. Just what did they do to him and how will this end. This will be just one of many question that I hope to find out as the series continues.
Just when you think you have a handle on what is going on the author changes that and throws a few twist in leaving you think this cannot be good. Many people will die and more to come as the author takes you through a story only she knows the ending to. There are some really interesting characters that keep you on your toes. Some your heart will go out to, some you will trust but should not. Just what is it about blue lights and bells? Who or what are those soldiers? Has your mind gone out of control? Did you just see what you thought you saw? So many questions and not enough answers.
Catherine Edwards does a good job with the narration. Her voices are nice her female are better than her male. I somehow expected since this took place in London for some of the voices to be British but none were that I could tell. Ms. Edwards has a very pleasant strong voice which comes across very clear. There were a few times that the sound changed from low to higher, it could have been my radio and not the audio. I do feel sure these where the time she took a break. It doesn’t take away from the audio you can barely hear it. For the most part she puts strong emotion into her read. When she is on the phone it really sounds like who ever she is talking to is using a phone. There is really a big different you feel like they are talking far away as one would be if talking on a phone. There were times I felt a little more emotion should have been used like when Ciaran brother got hurt and he didn’t know if he would live or die. From the way the story went he should have been yelling at him to open his eyes with a must stronger tone and voice. I felt the narrator did make you feel for the most part what the character felt I could hear tears in her voice when Madeline was upset about her friend or trying to find the things she need to so she could save her. I could feel the cold coming right off Ciaran mother. I am left wondering what secrets she holds and if we will find them out. I did enjoy the narration of Ms. Edwards and feel with a little more time she will make an outstanding narrator.
Madeline is a wonderful character you never really get a handle on her. She is sweet and kind always helping people who needs help. She is very outgoing and works hard to find the answers. She is trying to work out her psychic ability if that is what it is. Even she is unsure just what those blue dots are and why they keep changing. Where do they come from and just what are they trying to tell her? She doesn’t know who she can trust or which way to turn. Before she gets through this mess she is left with the questions are her friends true friends, does she have anyone she can count on, anyone she can trust. She is putting all her eggs in Ciaran basket will this be a mistake?
Ciaran is still very much a mystery to me I think he is a mystery to his self. He is left with many questions with no answers and he isn’t sure he will ever find them. The number 33 seems to be important in his life he is still left trying to work that out. He comes across as a mystery and we are still wondering what he is hiding. Not even the president has such high tech lock downs. I did really like him he is alpha but kind and caring. At times you are left thinking he is playing a cat and mouse game. He is holding his cards close to his chest not giving anything way. There is no doubt he is handsome, caring and strong. Something happens that leaves the reader wondering if he is real or not and just what is he hiding and why all the high tech security.
Ciaran brother is just a sweetheart more of an adventurer, traveling and hooking up with women I think. He is just a fun loving guy who loves to have fun and enjoy life. He is the opposite of Ciaran. Their mother I cannot get a handle on her. I know she loves her family to the point of chasing off women. She is hiding a big secret that she never plains on letting out. I am pretty sure it has something to do with Ciaran and if it comes out it might just destroy the man.
This is very much a page turning you will not want to put it down and will stay up late at night. I myself found things to do around the house and even listened on my lunch break which I keep for reading books only. The author puts in just a little romance but I feel sure things will get very hot and heavy for these two. I am left wondering just as Madeline if she really is psychic and just what is everyone after that it is worth killing lots of people over. This is not a standalone book to get the answers you must listen/read to all 4 of them. Believe me you will be hooked for sure by the time you finish book 1 you will want to dive into book 2. If you are looking for a very different kind of read but really a very good story with a wonderful plot you should pick this up and give it a try.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Not a standalone book, more question than answer so if you want to get the answers you must read all of them. Finish book 1 and dive into book 2 cause you'll be hooked, its a wonderful plot, so ..... pick this up and give it a try.
A mystery with plenty of twists and turns, many threads going on & multiple stories in different angles. I really enjoyed the book, I had a lots of crying, sometimes confusing so... read it with an open mind. romance, and kidnapping, wealthy, prestigious family and conspiracy theories. intriguing & believable and sometimes you'll be a little lost with what's happening, because it happend so rapidly it hard to follow. So concentrate on the story when you have enought time to read withoud having things going out around you.
How can I tell you about this book? Psychics do you believe? This is not that kind of book! It's better with twist and turn you think you can predict but you will be wrong. The books starts slow and you think just another kidnapping but as characters emerge you cannot figure out the actual game plan. Half truths rule the day and trust is out the door. By then of the book you just know there is more to be revealed. Ghost, technology past and future, alien or other things yet to be revealed. Who has the most mysterious past? Keep reading to find the answers.

This was an... interesting read. Well, listen for me.
Madeline's friend has been kidnapped and her captors want Madeline to find the owner of a game avatar. She is a psychic and relies on her powers to help. During her search, she runs into Ciaran and falls for him as he helps her.
Overall the story is great. I like the characters and thought they were well written. However, I felt like the relationship got hot and heavy veeery early, considering I think the book happened in the span of a week. Plus there was a lot of supernatural elements in there that just seemed... a bit much. Demons, psychics, mentions of aliens... I just wanted a focus on one specific set of supernatural. But that's just my preference.
For the most part, I really enjoyed the story and I am Intrigued to see what happens next. Now, after saying that I did have a few issues with the story.
1) The story is a bit jumpy 2) The love interest happens out of nowhere with no real build up 3) The action scenes aren't given enough detail and feel rushed 4) The reason for the kidnapping is never really explained in detail....why is the White Knight avatar so important? What program is he exactly....etc...
Since this is the first book in a series I'm giving the benefit of the doubt that the questions I have will eventually be answered and that the characters will grow and develop further as the books go on.
I was disappointed in this book. The introduction was really promising but after a while I was still having too many questions about the basis of the world Madeline was living in. I know it is supposed to be a mystery plot but for example at the end of the book I was still at lost when it came to the knowledge of "psychic". What's the rate in the population? Is it even public? What’s the usual psychic? And what about the hypothesis Madeline throw at Ciaran (vampire, faery and other beings) about his opponents? Do they exist in this world or was it a random guess? I was also wondering about the way Madeline said she was alone twice in the book as if she suddenly forgot Jo. She earlier said Jo was her family, her haven and that it was the reason she was doing her best to rescue her. I can understand it is not the same as love but the way it is said is confusing. Otherwise there were some plot tangle that were a bit rough sometimes. Still I was interested in the mystery even with my trouble to understand where it really started. So I'll give a try to the second book.
Madeline is in England in order to gather information to face her friend Jo who got kidnapped. While investigating she meets Ciaran who offers her his help to save her friend. This book is the first installment of the series “Shade of Mind” and it introduces us to Madeline and Ciaran. Throughout the book we get to know them and their relationship better. It was an enjoyable read that had me grabbing the edge of my seat because of the suspense. I often lost track of time while reading because I was so engrossed in the story!

So this book was OK. I wouldnt say I would be excited about reading the rest of the series, more intrigued to see what happens and if it answers my questions as it left a few things open. Things I did not get: Random romance, no build up. An entire chapter based on a dog that went nowhere really. Useless security? Even without a leader they have basic training. Breaks into an abbey somehow with no explanation of how they got in and no alarms going off?
What I liked about it was Tadgh, he was a fun character and would like to see more of him. Fast paced with a few fight scenes but not too many. I didnt dislike the plot, it has a lot of potential and would be a theme I could enjoy.

I have been provided with a copy of Random Psychic via Booksprout for an impartial review. This is the first book Curse of Soulmate series that was previously titled A Shade of Mind series. This series is connected to the Multiverse collection and I really enjoyed getting to enter this world. I just really loved this and getting to meet these new characters. This story was just different from anything I have read before and I really enjoyed myself. I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series.
The storey line is sublime, the caracters are vibrant, intreageing and challenging, surrounded by mayhem such as kidnapping, murder, betrayal, devastation, mystery after mystery, challenge after challenge, lie after lie,and in the middle of it all trust and a budding romantic relationship,as well as a little humor throne in here and there.A truly high caliber of writing that draws you in not letting you go until the last written word, making your want more. Aquier " Random Psychic)so you yourself can enjoy reading it as much as I have. 🤔🙄😋☺😀🙄😊Kat
Random Psychic was a fantastic read following Madeline and Ciaran. Madeline is trying to get her friend Jo back from a kidnapper and in the process needs Ciaran to help. Both have secrets and the story progressed at a nice pace with lots of action and twist. The chemistry between the two was fun to watch develop. This is the first book that I have read and I intend to continue reading this series.
This is a book that drags you in and keeps the pages turning
When a madman tries to drive Madelaine crazy by threatening her best friend you go on a wild and unpredictable ride. This book somehow manages to make me think of video game and I am still trying to work out Ciaran who or what is he This is the first book in a series that has a lot of potential
I was given an ARC copy of this book but this is a true and honest review
Random Psychic was a great beginning to what is sure to be a must read series for all paranormal suspense lovers. This story is fast paced with twists and turns that will have you not wanting to put it down. You get a little bit of everything with this story - paranormal, romance & suspense. I look forward to reading more in this series and from this Author.
What a great story. Madeline is a "sort of" psychic who really doesn't know how to use her ability. Ciaran is a rich but lonely business man with secrets. Together they make quite the pair while they work to save her friend Jo from kidnappers. I can hardly wait to read the next book in this series.

This is the first time reading this author. I loved reading this book. D.N. Leo is a wonderful Author to read. This book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading it. I can not wait to read the next one to see what happenes.

This book almost reads like a mystery novel to me. It has great storytelling and lots of great plot twists. Even the characters meeting and coming together reads very suspensfully and is full of drama. You have to pay attention in this book but it is very enjoyable.

I liked the plot, but I think there could be better developments along the lines of the love/romantic part of the story needs more information/development. The story has a rushed pace. And then the kidnapping is never explained exactly.
