I really adored this volume! There's so much interesting developments and some new characters as well. A mosaic of emotions as per usual; love, happines, heartache, etc. Reading these completely unravels me—a tangled mess of emotions, with personal matters only exacerbating the turmoil.

At present, it may be a more sensible approach for me to move forward with the series at an unhurried tempo. As things stand, it doesn't matter whether the volume's full of gloom and despondency or elation and beautitude, I will cry.

I mean, I love Ohshiba's innoncence, but sometimes that dense personality of him is so draining that I'd do anything to get inside the story just to slap some sense in him! Hahaha, also, love that Masahiro is finally having confidence to fight for Kousuke. That's my boy!! Own your man, he's yours and yours only. 😭

4/5⭐️

Finally, after 4 volumes we are back on track with some sort of plot. In volume 8 of Hitorijime My Hero we are finally seeing character development and plot movement. Masahiro has come such a long way since the beginning. He is less nervous, is taking charge, and finally gaining confidence in himself and his relationship with Kousuke. He also is smiling more and seems far happier than the beginning volumes.

I also agree with the other reviewers in the sense that the tone of the manga has changed. In the last 7 volumes, there was an ease, a lightness to the storytelling. Volume 8 has taken a serious turn with Kousuke's friends trying to sabotage his relationship and the big steps he is taking with Masahiro in their relationship.

Also, what the heck is going on with Kensuke and Hasekura? I mean I understand they took their relationship to the next level in the last volume, but wouldn't that make things less weird now? I feel like we are missing back context and will most likely get it randomly in a following volume.

It's sad that this was the best volume so far, I am hoping it finally gets better from here.

The story's overall tone has shifted somehow and everything feel different. There is less comedy and fluff and more behind the scenes plotting and angst. Two of Kousuke's friends are literally trying to sabotage his relationship with Masahiro and to me there is this looming sense of uneasiness throughout the entire volume.

Hasekura seems to be in a better mood now that him and Kensuke... did whatever it was they did in the last volume, but now Kensuke's acting weird. I can't tell what's going on with him. Is he not happy they took their relationship to the next level? Why does he still act uncomfortable around Hasekura? And have they continued their activities beyond that one time? It's hard to tell since the story isn't focusing on them.

And finally, Masahiro. He has come a long way since the first volume. He genuinely seems happy. He's smiling more, allowing himself to trust Kousuke, he no longer seems shy about getting intimate with him, and isn't freaking out about the whole situation with Natsou. He's actually optimistic about things working out. I'm so proud of him.

I adore this couple so much, they are so freaking cute! My standards are now higher because of Kousuke! *swoon*

I still don't really know how I feel about them moving in together but I like that Masahiro is starting to become more confident in their relationship. Kensuje is the ultimate best friend and no one can change my mind.
I like that more of Kousuke's friends were introduced even though one is literally trying to sabotage his relationship with Masahiro! Rude.
Overall loved it and would recommend the series to anyone wanting to get into Yaoi Manga.

Some interesting plot development starting up now, with Kousuke finally explaining the dynamics of his friend group. To some extent, anyway. There are six of them in total, although Ayaka (as the only woman) appears to have gotten left out of the whole world domination plot. They each took on a career path where they'd have significant influence: teacher, policeman, politics, bartender (as a central meeting point), and...well, love hotel wasn't on the list, but Shirou is still plenty wealthy with a big real estate arm. Even though it sounds like he branched out from whatever his assigned role was supposed to be.

Onda, working for a senator, is still the most attached to their plan and stuck on the determination to keep their core group together, with no distractions. Kousuke considers him a friend, although I'm not sure why; it seems like he's actually the one who's distanced himself the most from the others and rarely seems them anymore. But he's back in the picture now, putting together a plan to perk Natsuo up a little and keep their group from fracturing.

I don't know how well revealing Kousuke's relationship to the other teacher will go, since she has a student scandal of her own, but I suppose we'll see if it actually creates the kind of drama Onda is hoping for. (Wouldn't getting Kousuke fired or entangled in a scandal mess with whatever his ambitions are, not to mention ruining friendships? But I guess he's not thinking that far ahead.)

This is maybe in the 3.5 stars range, because it was enjoyable to read - and I really liked the increased focus on Kousuke and Setagawa - but a lot of the plot is still pretty tangled up. I have no idea who that masked guy with Natsuo is - if he's a doctor or a lover or just a friend? Or what happened to Natsuo's arm, etc. And what does it mean with the cat owning the bar? Legally, how exactly does that work.

Plus there's the sudden addition of Yunge being in love with Natsuo, which...okay. I mean, I'm not going to say I hate it, but the entire deal with Kousuke's and Setagawa's relationship is that it's special and very unique to them and their circumstances. Not a pattern to just paste over everyone else in the story...

I like Yunge a lot as a character, and I think his connection to Shirou is interesting - the whole training him how to deal with bullies and finding strength from not resorting to violence or retaliation - but right now him with Natsuo doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Mostly because I don't see their personalities fitting. I guess Yunge is calm and bright and cheery, like a less chaotic Kousuke in some ways - the light that Natsuo feels he's lost - but still. It'll take some work to get me there.

I also think Hasekura's right about Kousuke rushing things way too much with moving in with Setagawa. They haven't even talked about telling Setagawa's mom yet. She's still a mother, even if she's not a very good one, and I'm not sure how fully on board she would be with her son moving family registers and sharing an apartment with his teacher. Will they tell her the full truth? It sounds like Kousuke's planning to tell his own mother soon, so there are more complications to come.

After volume 7 dedicated much of its space to the spinoff characters and their "hitorijime my" stories, volume 8 focused on main story content. I found it particularly exciting as it offered glimpses into Kousuke's past and the friends around him while also exploring Yunge and who he likes. While we had a taste of Yunge in his short relationship with Kensuke, we now see that he has someone he likes for real and it leads him to a pretty murky spot. That spot and how everyone will respond is something saved for the next volume.

Which leads me to the only thing I would ding this volume for, it felt a little middling in that we continued some plots (like Kousuke and Masahiro wanting to move in together and the young master and Kensuke finally doing it but not knowing how to act afterwards around each other), but didnt make much of any progress in them. I kind of would have wanted a bit more...but on the other hand the pace it goes is realistic. Kousuke and Masahiro need to identify how they will do what they want to do considering the optics (I did like how they got Kensuke's views on it) Kensuke and the young master need some time since well Kensuke has only just started to view him as his boyfriend and not just a close friend that is clingy and that he needs to reciprocate those feelings though he's new at this thing, and well Yunge and Kousuke's intertwined plot has only just begun. So yeah I would have wanted these to move a bit further, still, it makes me look forward to more.

Favorite tiny moment was Masahiro realizing Kensuke and Hasekura have finally done it and how he's like proud and happy for Kensuke and wants to celebrate but cant since neither have told him.

Fun volume.

Masahiro is definitely growing up. His personality is maturing and he is becoming more confident with Kousuke. They decided to live together pretty quickly.

There's a side story about Natsuo and Yuge and it kind of just came out of nowhere. I wish it was hinted at earlier instead of just boom here ya go new possible couple.

I did hear these next few volumes are a little weird or have mixed reviews. Hopefully they're not too bad.

So many relationships have started to develop as we meet new characters and see existing characters interact. The whole Yuge plot line threw me for a loop but honestly I’m kind of here for it. I’m super annoyed with our cliffhanger. I knew it would happen but I so wanted to read that drama now. Can’t wait until I get my hands on the next volume.

3.5+ Not as strong as earlier volumes, mostly because drama is intensifying but the narrative structure can’t really keep up with it coherently. Love this series but so glad I don’t have to read it one chapter at a time.

Mind. Blow.

I genuinely cannot wait for volume 9. This chapter is going go make you question Kousuke and how friendship and love can be beautiful and tumultuous. Also, your love for Masahiro will grow

So many new characters introduced and secrets revealed and quite a few hints of rough drama-filled events ahead.

Finally we figured out some stuff here, but somehow I still have more questions than I did before. I hope Masahiro goes and beats someone up.

3.5* I like where this is going with meeting all of Kousuke’s group but dear lord it was confusing to figure out. I was unsure who random characters were because they weren’t talked about until pages later. I was hoping we got passed the point of confusing dialogue with this series but perhaps not.
