Gwen Cooper is the New York Times bestselling author of the memoirs "Homer's Odyssey: A Fearless Feline Tale, or How I Learned About Love and Life with a Blind Wonder Cat" and "Homer: The Ninth Life of a Blind Wonder Cat," and the novels "Love Saves the Day" and "Diary of a South Beach Party Girl."
Her latest project is "Curl Up with a Cat Tale," a first-of-its-kind monthly short-story series, featuring an all-new--and all-true!--humorous and heartfelt tale each and every month about life with her world-famous fur family. (See my website, www.gwencooper.com/cat-tales, for more details and a 60% discount!). Her work has been published in nearly two dozen languages.
Gwen lives in Manhattan with her husband, Laurence. She also lives with her two perfect cats--Clayton the Tripod and his litter-mate, Fanny--who aren't impressed with any of it.
I love her witty and humorous writing and her overall stories. I think one of my favorites at least from the title was "Spray Anything" now obviously a parody on the title "Say Anything" which according to the author is a rom-com; maybe I saw it at some point?
Looking forward to reading more of this author's work including the sequel to Homer's Odyssey which took me a while to track down.
Gwen Cooper at times feels like a bff I never had growing up. She effortlessly has me laughing out loud and delighting in her observations of events about or around herself that are really pretty absurd (eg getting banned from a store in NY). Most of all though, I appreciated the last few paragraphs about Homer and Clayton’s little blue collar with a bell on its end. The late fee I’m gonna get charged by the library is worth it!
I read animal stories when I need Pickens. Not all are created equal, but they all focus away from people: who cause most problems. Cooper's first book Homer's Odysseus, about a small, blind wondercat. It was beautiful, and this collection of "tips" is just as fun. Recommended for animal lovers.
As a lifelong cat lover, I absolutely adore these stories of Gwen and her cats. Her musings and observations are always enjoyable to read. It makes me want to observe my own cats' behaviors even more closely and with a renewed sense of joy and wonder. We are so lucky we get to share our lives and be loved my these magical little furry beings.
Gwen Cooper has an amazing ability to capture what it’s like living with cats. Her stories always make me laugh and cry. She is a talented writer and I’m sure that anyone who has lived with a cat can relate joyously to her stories.
I'm going to say it even though it may sound silly! This is a LOVE STORY! The love part, interpreted through the author's close relationship with her cats, is not laughable or disingenuous. It's moving and made me go "Awwwww!" Of course, the funny parts in the story are laugh-out-loud laughable. Gwen Cooper doesn't disappoint. This is my 2nd favorite story in her "Curl Up With A Cat Tale" series. Don't be fooled by thinking a short story doesn't have as much to offer as any novel. It's THE AUTHOR! I see her writing as easy to read but very intelligent, always with a laugh or two. Not an easy thing to incorporate these skills but Gwen Cooper masters this. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for her next story.
Spray Anything lands on all fours as quite the anthropomorphic tale of a budding romance between two cats. A pampered house kitty becomes the heart’s desire of a seemingly feral tom making his overtures through a kitchen's sliding glass door.
This is the third book I've read by author Gwen Cooper and I’ve grown accustomed to her lush writing style. However, her wordiness didn’t annoy me until now. Spray Anything felt like she’d made a dogged (😉) effort to pad it out from a few paragraphs to a lengthier and publishable short story or novella. I’m unsure the result here was worthwhile.
Yet, to my delighted surprise, the Say Anything movie reference actually fits into the plot, albeit via some clear stretching and squeezing.
