A Summary of the Christian Faith is Henry Eyster Jacobs' magnum opus. It is a systematic theology of the Christian faith written in a catechetical format from a Confessional Lutheran perspective. The work is written in a series of questions and answers on various doctrinal topics. Throughout the work, Jacobs defends his views through use of Scripture and the Lutheran fathers. This text is readable enough to be studied by the layman but with enough depth to teach the learned pastor and scholar.
The printing of this edition has a few errors. If you are nitpick a book you will absolutely notice them every time you see them. It happens quite a bit.
The content. I came to the Lutheran faith about a year ago when I read this and I have to say, it was very edifying. The Q&A format makes for an easy step by step read which can be a breath of fresh air when reading theology or philosophy. Personally I was expecting a more philosophical style book, so I wasn’t very excited to read it when I opened it. That changed a few pages in. The questions flow in a way that naturally follows the reader’s curiosity. Almost like Jacobs anticipates your questions.
