Ten Years ago, Nate Baldwins’ life turned on a dime. One second his future was paved in gold but in the next, his life as he knew it, was irrevocably ruined. Unable to live with his guilt, Nate fled to the red dirt of the unforgiving Australian outback. He spends his days alone, paints and clay his only company. Until one day he finds a stranger stranded in the middle of nowhere listless and baking under the brutal sun. He takes the handsome man home, planning to send him on his way once he recovers. But Nate has no idea his life is about to flip upside down once more.
Aidan Brennan’s life changed forever the day he lost his parents when he was a baby. That split second in time put Aidan on a path that would eventually lead him into a dangerous underworld. Forced to run, and hunted by a vicious enemy, Aidan can’t go back, but with his car as dead as all those he’s loved, he can’t go forward. In the outback, the sun is a killer too and its sights are set on Aidan.
Brought together by fate, bound together by unbearable guilt, can these two men find the redemption they are looking for?
Karrie lives in one of Australia’s sunniest places with her husband and three sons, though she hates the sun with a passion. She dreams of one day living in the wettest and coldest habitable place she can find. She’s been writing stories in her head for years but has finally managed to pull the words out of her head and share them with others. She spends her days trying to type her stories on the computer without disturbing her beloved cat curled up on the keyboard. She knows reads far too much, but can’t seem to stop herself. Saved is her debut novel.
Outback Redemption deals with the pain of loss, the weight of guilt, and the power of forgiveness. The story involves the death of a child and torture of a secondary character, so if you’ve got triggers, you may want to proceed cautiously. Outback Redemption has an important story to tell, but ultimately struggles to make the impact I think it wanted to. Nate and Aidan are perfectly serviceable characters and, while their emotional struggles are communicated clearly enough by the author, they failed to make an emotional impression on me. I struggled to connect with either of them and while I was sympathetic to their suffering, it was hard to actually care about them. Nate’s self flagellation especially didn’t seem as tortured as we were supposed to believe. Their romance was straightforward, but not particularly inspired, and I wondered more than once if their relationship would have succeeded if not for their mutual traumas. It seemed to be about the only thing they had in common.
I love reading, but I get bored easily. I tend to stick with books that are fast paced, have very little fluff and are intensely focused on the main characters. Ones who didn't meet in a coffee shop. This story delivered.
I was worried about reading this book because I wasn’t sure how or even if they could overcome their pasts. But only together were they able to begin forgiving themselves. The story unfolded in a realistic way while never getting bogged down. It wasn't super angsty but there was enough uncertainty, action and mystery that I didn't put this down until I'd read the whole thing. Ending was perfect.
4 / 5 Stars... Looking for more from this author. Please keep writing, but from one indie author to another... use the 'Read Aloud' function in Word. It will help you to hear editing errors your eyes will miss. The issues weren't overwhelming but enough that it should be re-edited. Take care.
I really liked this one and was glad to see the connection to Saved, the first book I read from the author. The romance is strong, the steam is on the milder side and the suspense was excellent, even if a tad bit over the top. My favorite thing is the excellent sense of place, making me feel like I could see the landscape in that part of Australia.
