Death of an Englishman

It was a very inconvenient time for murder. Florence was full of Christmas shoppers and half the police force was already on holiday. At first it seemed quite an ordinary murder. Of course, there are always a few mysteries. In this case, the dead man had been in the habit of moving his furniture at three o'clock in the morning. Naturally, the police wanted to know why. The case became more complicated. But all the time, the answer was right under their noses. They just couldn't see it. It was, after all, a very ordinary murder.

It started out as a book that was read for my English class back in high school. The story tells about the mystery of a murder case involving an Englishmen, in which the story follows by providing informations as the story goes on. All in all, it was an interesting read in addition to a way of learning how to do a proper storytelling.

It was the first STAGE 4 book I have ever read from Oxford Bookworms. There were a lot of difficult words, but they gradually reduced. The way in written the main and minor characters was very interesting and deep representation, that made felt me as if I was reading in my native language.

ディテールをすっとばすと、推理小説って身も蓋もないよなーと簡略版を読んでよーっくわかるというか^^;。
イタリア語の名前を判別するのがいささか難儀だったなーとゆーぐらい。
本当は泣ける話なんだろうとは思うのですが。

4.a) we needn't worry about the customs officer and the thieves.
b) This expression is not familiar for us, Japanese who are educated seriously. Usually, we use " don't need" instead of "needn't". When I saw this sentence in this book, I was surprised and could learn new expression.
5. In this book, there is a situation which a police ask the suspect about the happening. One suspect was child. Actually, the police didn't trust the child. I had a same experience when I was child. At school, my teacher didn't trust us when we were in trouble. They tend to doubt us. Both of us a human. We sometimes make a mistake. But even the adults, we tend to protect ourselves with a lie when we are in trouble. So I would say I cannot believe almost of all the people. We have to find and make a good relationships with our reliable persons.

Kinda good story. However, there were some points during the course of the story that I didn't quite understand clearly. It's like, I'm reading to this detail and suddenly, the author jumped to another totally different one. Somehow I felt like the course of the story was interrupted many times due to that incomprehensibility. And the part of solving the crime weren't really interesting and fascinating like I had expected. But overall, it was a decent detective story, with an unlikely culprit revealed at the end, considering this is a short retold of the original, which does not allow the story to be fully expressed.

I've just found some reviews below about this book and it seems like one of the famous series. I thought this story was one of the stories they had made up for beginners. It was hard to learn and to read aloud their Italian names.
