Winter has never been so hot, nor the world so dangerous. Sidney Bannister has been lucky so far. With no survival training and no real skills besides her street smarts, she realizes that she must learn to fight so she can protect her newborn baby from the infected that plague the United States. Enemies from her former life arise to bring the AWOL Lieutenant Jake Murphy to justice. The hunt intensifies as the remnants of Jake’s old unit close in around him and his group of survivors. In the middle of the chaos, Iranian aircraft fill the skies of Kansas, forcing the Americans to make decisions that will impact all of their lives. How much is Sidney’s small group willing to sacrifice to stay together? ~ Follow the action that began in the Phalanx Press collaborative novel Five Roads to Texas as the series continues to grow.
These are part of a series and while individual characters’ story arcs diverge after the 1st book, Five Roads to Texas - they also start to come back together in some ways. Definitely best to listen to them in order (and all of them!). Also, this review may contain spoilers to previous books.
This picks up a few months after the end of After the Roads - about a year after the outbreak began. While Sidney, Jake, Carmen and the kids have found a safe haven at Vern’s farm. Unfortunately, Jake’s status as a deserter and an escaping Iranian team threaten to disrupt the tenuous peace. Well, as peaceful as you can be when there’s still infected finding their way to your farm.
Again, some folks are lost (though I’m probably not as sad about them as I should be) and new people join the group. It’s also apparent that staying is no longer an option. I liked the dynamic the new characters brought - especially Grady and Mark.
Like the other books in the series, answers about how and why this started only bring more questions. It might also be they’ve stumbled across a possible cure.
Lots of great action, political intrigue, and some very emotional scenes.
Narration: I love that Andrew B Wehrlen continues to narrate the series - but it leaves me with nothing original to say about him. He’s a great fit and these are easy to binge.
Sidney Bannister is still struggling to survive at a rural homestead outside of Liberal, Kansas. Her group was lucky enough to be accepted into the Carpenter fold over the winter so long as they agreed to help with spring planting. It is not time to become complacent though. Not only do they must stay vigilant to ward off the infected they now have to watch out for the Iranians who are making the local airport into their base. Who knows if they or friend or foe?
Parker’s novel is the sixth in the Five Roads to Texas series. The Road to Hell: Sidney’s Way continues Sidney’s story shortly after she gives birth to her son. To add to her street smarts Jake Murphy has been training her and the others in self-defense and the use of firearms. Her character is growing and maturing especially with the responsibility of motherhood.
The book was well edited. It is a fast read and full of action.
Even though the reason was explained I still find it hard to believe that the Army would waste the resources in an apocalyptic event such as this to track down a soldier who was AWOL.
The romantic triangle of Sidney, Jake, and Carmen continue with no definite end in sight. Will Jake stay with Carmen and her children, or will Sidney pursue Jake? The Army forces dispatched to track down and arrest Jake will discover there is more to the story than they were led to believe. Iranian and North Korean aircraft are spotted in the skies over Kansas of all places. What they are doing there and why they are landing at local airports is something Jake will need to investigate. Last but not least, what will become of the survivors at the farm? The saga continues as we discover answers to these questions. Sidney has been hiding along with Jake and others since leaving the camp in Texas. They not only have to stay safe from the reanimated dead but foreign soldiers have started to arrive in their location. On top of that Jake is now a wanted fugitive of the U.S. Army. Just when you thought it could get worse, Brian Parker delivers another great addition to the Five Roads to Texas series. If you haven't read this series I highly recommend you read them soon.
Great story that revisits my favorite characters. This series is really good. It is always full of action, interesting and colorful characters. The series being written by multiple authors works. If you are looking for an apocalyptic zombie story that works from multiple view points and story lines this is the one for you. Amazing narration by Andrew. He is one of my favorites!
I was voluntarily provided this review copy at no charge by the author, publisher and or narrator.
In the first collaborative book, I wasn't a huge fan of Sydney, probably because she didn't get as much "screen time" as some of the other characters. But with her first sequal and this follow up, we finally get to see Sydney and the Campbell family come into their own.
I am really looking forward to her next story, as well as following the other characters on their own journeys from this book.
A great read, this book is a continuation of the story and I found it to be highly entertaining and chomping at the bit to read the next phase of the story and where it takes our groups as they fight against the invaders who unleashed hell on earth and are intent on claiming the USA as their own.
More, I need more!!! I have to find out what happens to Sidney and her group,, along with Rick and his group. I am still waiting for Sidney and Rick to get together...finally!!! This is a fantastic series and I love the fact that there are different authors writing the different books in this series.
The Five Roads universe keeps getting better. The UN ‘peacekeepers’ are finding that the United States isn’t quite as easy to pacify as they thought. And I have a feeling that it will only get worse for them soon. On to the next book in the series!!
Story was solid throughout…unlike others in the series which rely on describing battle preparation to fill dialogue, this book had more plot and character development.
An interesting, well written story that continues the series. Sidney is definitely a bad ass who has many survival abilities that she continues to use to good effect.
Again, more of a political thriller with zombies than an actual zombie book. But the pace is starting to pick up and the series is getting a bit more exciting.
I love these books! We have the 'government' trying to bring Jake to 'justice'.We have a new member joining the group. There are old and new friends. It was a good read. Andrew B Wehrlen was a fine narrator.I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
