A Sunday drive in the country for Macky and Millie turns into a rain-drenched detour into the town of Arkham. When a giant spider jumps in front of the coupe, Macky steers the car into a ditch, leaving them stranded.
Arkham isn't what it used to be, and the name Herbert West keeps making its way into the conversation.
What is the green glow emanating from the asylum? Why does it never stop raining? And who's responsible for the unearthed graves at Christ's Church Cemetery?
Herbert West has been dead for more than fifteen years, but something is stirring in the bowels of the asylum, and the people of Arkham are trying desperately to keep it a secret.
Brandon Berntson grew up in various towns throughout Colorado, where most of his stories take place. His work spans from serious, adult horror to playful, young adult fantasy and everything in between. He is the author of Castle Juliet and When We Were Dragons, enchanting, magical reads for all ages. He is also the author of Body of Immorality, a cryptic collection of horror stories, and the raw, adult themed All The Gods Against Me.
He loves art, music, indie films, classic horror films, and hockey. He lives in Longmont, Colorado.
Mr. Berntson did a great job with the first book in this series, but has unfortunately lost it with this instalment. The main characters, who had a good rapport in the first book, have zero chemistry, with Macky seeming to actively dislike Millie, ignoring her every request for consideration while constantly droning on about drinking whisky. Millie for her part does nothing more than complain and scream at the slightest provocation. The book is also littered with inconsistencies, and while the story is alright it’s a little over-the-top, even when compared to Book 1. One last thing, who leaves their dog alone with no food and water for 4 days, or tries to borrow money from an employee which they barely pay anyway? Sorry, but I can’t really recommend this one.
Are you kidding me? What the actual, Mr Berntson? You take the two things I dislike the most and make them the main creature. One eyed spider humans. Yep. Not going outside alone at night. Ever. Devlin Macky and his side-kick Millie do as they do best; argue, drink, and solve creepy mysteries. For those that get squeamish by bugs and creepy crawlies, this is perfect! Although, I could have done without the 3 foot mantis and puppy sized spider. Not cool. The flow of the story was spot on. Plenty of creepy and snark.
He has the patter down which makes it a fun read, and his slant on Lovecraft's Reanimator is over the top (in a good way)! I was disappointed to find there was no third book (yet, we hope)
The story was good but conflicted so much with Lovecraft that I had to force myself to think of this Arkham as part of a different dimension. I enjoyed it; it was an easy read but nothing I'd ever confuse with an HPL story.
An absolute gem of a story, funny, heart-rending and a great homage to the classics while finding an original voice of its own. Cannot recommend it enough!
