Alexis Silver #3

Silver Quarrel

Rate this book
Book 3 in the bestselling Alexis Silver, Mermaid Detective series!

Alex Silver has worked as a PI long enough to have many strange clients try to hire her... but the CIA is a first.

People have secrets, mermaids more than most. When a CIA agent shows up claiming to know her biggest one, Alex finds herself at a disadvantage. However, the government wants her help. Despite being beyond the cares of mortals, she still considers herself an American, and feels obligated to do what she can.

Disappearance cases are fairly routine, but a desperate thrall hiring her to find a missing vampire is a bizarre twist that piques her curiosity. Tracking down an off-the-grid undead is like being right back to the 1940s. All she’s missing is the fedora.

An inexplicable change has happened to the fabric of the universe, evidently driving some dark masters insane. An Ohio-class nuclear missile sub is about the worst place imaginable for a werewolf to have an existential crisis. Though mermaids aren't well equipped to fight other supernaturals, Alex isn't about to let nukes hit the US.

Even if it kills her.

I think I got this one within moments of it releasing. Awesome. This is my favorite one of the Alexis Silver stories so far. Her cases were interesting. It's becoming clear I might get the cross-over I've been really hoping for. Yay to hear from Kingsley and Sam in this one! This one takes place right after the events of Moon Master - if you haven't read all the Samantha Moon books yet, get on that - big things are coming in this universe! I can see the story lines weaving together to see what's happening to others. Alexis gets to team up with the FBI in this one and run into two others whose Dark Masters have gone rogue. I love Lucinia and can't wait to find out what the next stories bring.

Great read

This story like all the others is great. I'm enjoying reading about a mermaid shifter. Very impressive work from the authors. I've never came across a shifter series like this.
Just a heads up... This book stayed on page 222 or 225 during the whole read. Even the table of contents had the same page number all the way down. Might wanna check that..

When they say Big Brother is watching, they aren’t kidding and Alex finds that out up close and personal when the CIA comes calling in book three, Silver Quarrel. As if that’s not enough, someone, or something is wreaking havoc among the Dark Masters, and lets not forget the lovesick Vampiric Thrall looking for her missing love! This series just keeps getting better and better! The writing is top notch fantastic! I love that everything I need to know is clearly presented in a smooth flowing, highly entertaining manner! I’m never bored and my attention never waivers! The characters, whether popping in for a bit from the previous books ala Detective Serrano, series regulars like Alex and Lucinia, her Dark Master, or those making their first appearance in this story ala Emma the Vampire Hunter, are complete, fully developed, and feel real! They also run the gamut from extremely likable to throughly deplorable! No spoilers, you’ll have to judge whose who for yourself! As with the previous books, Silver Quarrel features multiple plots running concurrently with plenty of fast paced action. I must say that with each book I find myself being drawn deeper into both Alex’s history and her unique relationship with Lucinia, her Dark Master. I find that I want to know more, I NEED to know more. This wonderful, and at times a bit horrific, story is made all the more entrancing by truly spectacular narration. Every character is voiced clearly, consistently, emotionally, and at times heartbreakingly! There is never a doubt as to what the characters are feeling, or their state of mind. The pacing is perfect and serves to move the story along brilliantly without lagging. I am loving everything about this story, and this series. Five stars because that is all I am allowed to give!

This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:

With each book I like Alexis more and more...:)
All the books in the series have a lot in common - like a great sense of humour and smoothly flowing plots - and yet every one feels a bit different; the first one was emotionally touching, the second one had the vibe of an Indiana Jones treasure hunting adventure, now we almost go James Bond here:) And it's such great fun following Alexis, with her quirky, a bit abstract, almost Monty Python kind of humour, with the unexpected depth of her attachments and loyalties hidden behind the facade of a not-too-serious attitude to life, with her warmth and empathy towards the victims she decides to stand for...:) She's the kind of characters I like as heroes and heroines of my books:)

The plot - as in the previous books - mixes the adventurous with the criminal with the paranormal... It makes for a fast, crazily twisted yet addictive storyline, a plot that keeps you glued to the pages or your listening device and doesn't let go until you finish... And you don't even notice the passage of time - those 5 and a half hours fly by in the blink of an eye...:)

Narration by Ms Huston is great; the pace of her reading is right, the individual characters easily recognizable and the plot itself feels almost cinematic...:)

Basically two separate stories one after the other: Parts 1 & 2. Along with an interesting story, the first part brings up info about what the Masters are doing that flows through into the second. So the first part sets the background for the second.

Part 1. Alexis gets asked by the CIA to help with a missing nuclear submarine. It’s seems its XO is an out-of-control werewolf. This shows some of Alexis’s abilities underwater. She spends most of the time in small, close quarters aboard the sub with some gruesome but in places funny scenes. The end allows for future stories.

Part 2. Alexis starts to remember things from her past and connect the dots. Then gets involved in a case to find a missing vampire which leads to her working with a vampire hunter.

And be prepared for a very abrupt ending. The story line ends then ‘boom’, it’s done with just a very annoyingly quick lead-in for the next book. (Which we will have to wait forever for.)

Footnote: 1) I like Licinia. For a Master she’s pretty cool. Be great if the others were like that.

Fave scenes: Corridor of Carnage, the hairball, Reece seeing the mermaid and Alexis’s office building distraction.

I love this series and this was a great addition to it. Alexis Silver is a mermaid, but she's definitely not the Disney type! She was turned about 100 years ago when the ship she was on sank and she was found by a merman. Now, she is a private detective (even though she definitely doesn't need the money).

The first part of the book finds Alex working with the CIA to take down a rogue werewolf. The second part of the book focuses on her quest to find a missing vampire after she is hired by his enthralled slave. Both stories are great fun with enough humor to lighten the action involved. There is plenty of fun and emotion throughout this book and I love the interaction between Alex and her Dark Master, Lucinia.

I look forward to the next book in this series to see what happens with the strange occurrences of the being called Elizabeth. And, I would love to read more books involving the kickass vampire hunter, Emma.

The narrator is absolutely perfect for this book and her performance makes this already wonderful read even better. I can't imagine anyone else as Alexis! I was given the chance to listen to this audiobook by the author/narrator/publisher and chose to review it.

Strange Bedfellows

•••NOT for the homophobic, transphobic, closedminded, or faint of heart!•••

This series must be read in order. The first book is "Silver Light". The second book is "Deep Silver". This is the third book. I can't wait to read "Silver Serpent"!

Meeting a woman from the CIA who not only knows who she is... But also WHAT she is, is daunting enough, without the thought of nuclear weapons. Licinia reminds Alexis to be careful... but saying no really isn't an option, is it? Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country and all that. How can they know about her? What do they want from her? Is there an inherent threat if she doesn't help? Or is it only the threat they want her help with? Probably a good thing she doesn't really eat people right? Will she be able to resolve whatever they want her to resolve? Will they let her go on her merry way afterwards if she does help? Or will they try to conscript her into further service?

Alexis finds herself working alongside the CIA on a very interesting case. I thoroughly enjoyed the submarine case. Like the other book, Alexis takes on two jobs. The second is finding someone who has disappeared. Tuesday crazies find Alexis in her office again! LOL. The second case was one that was wrapped in grief, murder, and sadness. This is one of those times that I was happy that Alexis was able to use her gift to let victims forget about certain things so that they can go on with their lives. If you enjoy reading books about Merfolk, supernatural, and mystery then consider picking this series up.

The narrator, Kelley Huston did a fabulous job narrating the story. She truly does a wonderful job portraying Alexis, and the secondary characters. The inflections and voices she uses are easy to follow and elevates the book for me.

I love mermaids

This series is very entertaining. Alexis who is a private investigator, had a dark master as most of other immortals or as she is, longer living individuals. Although her dark master isn’t really evil. I like that she has a moral code and tries to help. I also get a lot of chuckles from her slipping into her speech patterns from her human years in the early 1900s. Alexis has a soft spot for children and the elderly. I really like her. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Not your typical mermaid and I absolutely love it!!
Silver Quarrel is the third story in the Alexis Silver series and they just keep getting better. Alexis finds herself off tryingbto save a nuclear sub from a rogue werewolf for the CIA. And then, teams up with the most unlikely of allies to track down a missing vampire. This one was action packed, the audio narration is fantastic and I can't get enough. The dark masters are planning something and I can't wait to see what happens next!!

My review is based on the audiobook. I love Alexis Silver more with each book. She is always trying to do the right thing. This book has some interesting interactions and infers that some bad times are ahead. The narrator does a wonderful job bringing the story & characters to life - I could listen to her read all day! Excited for more!

Silver Quarrel

Another amazing story. I absolutely love Alexis and the adventures she seems to get up while working her PI cases.
The mystery surrounding the dark masters are really starting to heat up and I am excited to see what is in store for not only Alexis but her own dark master.
I read and listened to this book and the narrator does an amazing job as always

Not gonna lie....

Ive never been super into mermaids. They're cool and what not but this book makes me love them! Mainly Alexis. 😂 The facetious comments keep me laughing. The plot ties in with the Samantha Moon series I also read, which makes me love it even more! Not super spicy either

Enjoyable but felt like two different stories

I enjoy the Alexis Silver books a lot. My only comment on this one is that it felt like two separate stories that weren't really related under one title. I would have read both anyway it was just a little confusing.

Wow!

Another wonderful book in this series. It's hard to put the book down even for meals. The suspense is that good. I never know what will be coming next but I know I need to move on to the next book.

This reread was done through audible and was so good. Kelly Huston does an amazing job narrating the book and truly brings all the characters to life. The sass between the primary character and her host is a ton of fun. And if you have read any of the Samantha moon novels the crossover of the two just made my heart so happy! I love love love when authors put two separate series characters together just like it might happen in the real world. Kudos to the authors.
Overall, a continuation to the series that is written to easily be a standalone but if you want the character development and to follow some of the side stories starting at book 1 and reading/listening through brings clarity to some of the characters.
