Discovering the Real Millie

Rate this book
Millie Sinclair is a socialite from Newport, Rhode Island, a place rich with history—not that she cares. After failing a history test, she’s desperate for extra credit and accepts an assignment to tour one of the famous Newport mansions.

At first the old mansions are nothing more than venues for weddings and charity events to Millie. Until she discovers a link to her family history and unearths a world of lies, betrayal and heartache in the pages of her great-grandmother’s journals. Learning about her great-grandmother’s forbidden love through a series of letters makes Millie question her own growing feelings for a boy who isn’t her boyfriend.

All dolled up in her vintage dress, Millie attends the most talked about charity event in Newport’s high society—The Roaring Twenties Gala. After fainting, she awakes in 1925 where she not only steps into her great-grandmother’s t-strap shoes, but into the worst night of her life—the night the journal entries end. Mistaken for her great-grandmother, and without knowing how to get back to her own time, Millie watches her great-grandmother’s life unravel as those she trusts are the ones to betray her.

Family Time Travel

Having visited Newport, Rhode Island, some years ago, I thought it would be fun to read a book about it in two eras. I’ve read a number of time-travel books, but I’ve haven’t read many where the person in the present goes back and lives a relative’s life. It started a little slow, though it was interesting to read about Newport and the Cottages (and be introduced to that sweet young builder with architectural ambitions). Things definitely got more interesting when present-day Millie went back to the Roaring Twenties. The author gave a good sense of what life was like back then, or at least what we imagined it to be in our more semi-romantic, even if criminal, views. I liked how the book explored social issues. I liked the setup, too. Present Milly knew something dramatic happened to her great-grandmother before she traveled back, but then she learns the reality by inhabiting her life. An intriguing and different time travel book.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Cute story, but the writing...oh my. The author has a very frequent tendency to over-describe when it's not needed. Instead of writing, "I slipped my feet into my shoes", she would write "I slipped my feet into my tan espadrilles". Why? If the story needs to know they are tan espadrilles, tell me. Otherwise, I don't need to know. This happened over and over. It's a cute YA romance, but please put the thesaurus away and concentrate on the the story.

Wow. What a story. Millie is a Socialite that does her own thing. When she goes to an old mansion to get credits, it ends up being a pleasure. Loved it.

This was a gripping and captivating YA read. The characters were real and exciting, and relatable despite my being the furthest thing from a rich socialite!!

Millie is grappling with decisions in her life and at the root of it is struggling with her identity. She starts to investigate her family history as part of her history lesson and discovers more than just a way to keep up her grades.

The uncovering the history of her great grandma helps her to discover what is truly important in her own life. An exciting and enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed this story. Discovering the Real Millie is a young adult story that we can all relate to. Current day Millie Sinclair discovers 90 year old love letters and journals belonging to her great grandmother 17 year old Millie Covington, part of the elite society in 1920's Newport, RI. At a charity banquet, their worlds collide. Two love stories separated by generations, lovers separated by society's expectations, families dealing with young adults struggling with their own futures combine to create a story for all generations. I definitely recommend this book.

I have read several books by Paolo, but never in her role as “Tessa Marie.” I have always enjoyed reading her books and have found them entertaining. “Discovering the Real Millie” was my favorite one yet! It was incredible. So many twists and turns; it was hard to put down.
I hate spoilers so I won’t say too much, but this book took me to places I never expected. I fell in love with all the characters – well, almost all of them… Let me just say that we should all have a family like Millie’s, and friends like hers, too. I hope to discover more books by Tessa Marie!

The time travel/body inhabitation was very tastefully done. This book showcased the prisons of the elite and the struggles to break free. I liked how much of the 1920s were brought in - gangsters, bootlegging, etc. This book really makes you think and examine your motives and search for your true self.

Millie is strong willed, but lives her life to please everyone around her. Her grandmother is the only one that knows the real Millie. She has the perfect boyfriend, perfect career plan, and great friends. Will that be enough?

This book has intrigued me. Kept me captivated with the lives of Millie and her great grandmother.

Discovering the Real Millie is a charming time travel Romance set in both the present day and the mid 1920's. When Millie discovers there is not much known about the great grandmother she is named after she tries to find out what happened to her and suddenly finds herself transported back in time. This book tells more than just one love story and beautifully links the two very different yet surprisingly similar times. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this book. It was very easy going in the beginning what one might call a slow burn, but in this case it didn’t hurt anything. It was just taking its time telling its story. Once she went back to 1925, everything happened really fast to the end. I wish the book had been a little longer so it could take more time developing, but I still really enjoyed it.

Definitely recommended!

Discovering the Real Millie--PG13
Triggers: racial violence
Violence: racial violence, mobster roughness
Language: about 70, including one fbomb
Sex: no

This had a very, very slow start, but it picked up and went gangbusters until it got very slow again. There was a "love triangle," but it was more like cheating. I didn't like it very much.
