The Book of Hebrews helps us see the connection between God's grace in our lives and the call to invest ourselves in God's mission in the world. In doing so, we express gratitude for the salvation we have received and respond to God's grace by being faithful to the One who delivers us.
In Hebrews: Grace and Gratitude, author and New Testament scholar David deSilva takes you through a study of Hebrews, tracing the themes of grace and gratitude through this unique New Testament book. In the Book of Hebrews, you will discover a bold perspective on who Jesus is and what he has done, as well as a powerful reflection on the meaning and significance of his death and resurrection in light of the Old Testament. As you read and study this letter, you will receive a deeper appreciation for the salvation we have received through Christ and hear afresh God's call to a life of gratitude and faithfulness.
Additional components for a six-week study include a DVD featuring David deSilva and a comprehensive Leader Guide.
David A. deSilva (PhD, Emory University) is Trustees’ Distinguished Professor of New Testament and Greek at Ashland Theological Seminary in Ashland, Ohio. His numerous books include Introducing the Apocrypha and An Introduction to the New Testament: Contexts, Methods, and Ministry Formation.
DeSilva provides a look at the thread of grace and gratitude (as the title suggests) in the New Testament book of Hebrews.
This is an overview and might be seen as a general introduction to Hebrews, but it isn't the strongest source on Hebrews that I've read. The overall thread and the conclusion are on the weak side, and instead of providing a strong theological perspective, it seems to be more of a general overview.
I have hope that his longer commentaries will be more concise and helpful, and I suspect that he wrote this for those lay persons who are less likely to tackle an in-depth commentary.
A great commentary companion for the letter to the Hebrews. DeSilva is very heady as he walks us through, chapter by chapter, of the writer of Hebrews admonishments. If you are studying Hebrews in your New Testament, this book will shed light on the whole theme and ideas the original writer wants us to know as followers of Jesus: God has extended his grace through Jesus, we should be grateful to God through the life we live.
Takes the reader through the book of Hebrews in big sections and traces the themes of those sections. Very good discussion throughout. Very good for study or for teaching/preaching the book.
