Decision

Rate this book
Follow the law, or follow their hearts? By-the-book Bo Schollenberger’s training to be the new boss at the Southeastern Narcotics Bureau. He’s always been the moral compass for his partner Lucky Lucklighter, or Simon Harrison, or whatever-the-hell his name is this week.

Lucky might have read the book, or parts of it, but toes the line between legal and… not so legal. A little moral elasticity lets him out-maneuver the bad guys. It’s not broke, why fix it?

They butt heads at work, but they’re rock solid at home, where their biggest concern is when, or if, they’ll become parents.

Their latest case puts them in a tailspin when drugs flood a local high school and someone hands Lucky’s nephew a vial of pills like they were candy. Unravelling the drug ring leads them straight into a nest of human trafficking, way outside the jurisdiction of the SNB, but no way could Bo and Lucky let the perpetrators leave Atlanta scot-free. No one gets away with harming innocents, especially family.

The letter of the law says to trust the legal system, but doing the right thing might lead them outside the lines. Especially when the youngest trafficking victim lands squarely in Bo’s lap.

Eden Winters

You will know Eden Winters by her distinctive white plumage and exuberant cry of “Hey, y’all!” in a Southern US drawl so thick it renders even the simplest of words unrecognizable. Watch out, she hugs!

Driven by insatiable curiosity, she possibly holds the world’s record for curriculum changes to the point that she’s never quite earned a degree but is a force to be reckoned with at Trivial Pursuit.

She’s trudged down hallways with police detectives, learned to disarm knife-wielding bad guys, and witnessed the correct way to blow doors off buildings. Her e-mail contains various snippets of forensic wisdom, such as “What would a dead body left in a Mexican drug tunnel look like after six months?” In the process of her adventures, she has written over thirty gay romance novels, lost count of novellas and short stories, has won Rainbow Awards, was a Lambda Awards Finalist, and lives in terror of authorities showing up at her door to question her Internet searches.

When not putting characters in dangerous situations she’s cosplaying for children's charities or hanging out at the farm being a mother, grandmother, and vegetarian.

Her natural habitats are hardware stores and on the backs of motorcycles.

The 8th installment in the Diversion series is like a comfy pair of slippers. It’s “just right”. A nice mix of story, comedy and family drama. The cast has grown into an ensemble, and Lucky and Bo are now surrounded by well-rounded, likable family and friends. They’re supposed to be settling into their new, safer, 9 to 5 roles. Bo is in training with Walter to be his successor; and Lucky is focusing on his new role as the department trainer. Then wouldn’t you know it; a case gets dumped in Lucky’s lap; and it’s personal. . Someone’s pushing fake aderalls at his nephew Ty’s school. The jocks are being targeted and since Ty made the soccer team he’s gotten caught up in the storm. Lucky’s more determined than ever to solve this case; especially when he discovers that it isn’t just his nephew and the high school kids getting messed with; there’s human trafficking involved.

Unfortunately, this case turns out to be wide reaching; and dangerous. But it also plays a pivotal role in bringing Lucky and Bo closer to their goal of becoming parents. And then, rinse and repeat – thank goodness Grandfathers N, and V. are in the wings. Decision wraps up in a good place if the series is over; however, it doesn’t feel like it is. Lucky and crew still have a lot more stories to tell. Personally, I don’t think the series can end before Lucky finds out that his sister Charlotte is totally dating his training recruit Salters (aka creepy stalker Nurse Jimmy).

Lucky and Bo are solid, No relationship drama. Plenty of life drama. Many heartwarming moments.

I have no idea how and why, but I had a hard time getting into this.
I started and stopped, again and again, and finally pushed myself through.

Of course, I loved Lucky and Bo together and watch them embark on a totally new chapter in their life.
Of course, I adored Lucky for his legendary grouchiness, although it seems that he is mellowing a lot with age and Bo’s continuing influence.
Of course, it made me very happy seeing these guys settled and content, extending their family in some expected, unexpected (and expecting) ways.

But somehow, I missed the sparkle and sizzle from earlier books, and a couple of plot developments are quite obvious. Maybe it’s time for me to say good-bye to a series I have thoroughly loved so far.

I used to love this series but I'm just not digging these last few books. I don't know if it's the author's writing or if my tastes have changed. It's probably on me. I can't say that I really enjoyed this. I skimmed a lot of it.

BUT....I can't quit it either. I've been reading this series for YEARS. I have to know how everything ends up for all these characters. I liked where this one went in their personal lives. It was lovely. If I'm honest though I hope this series wraps up soon so I'm not dragging along unhappy for years. I quite BDB dammit, I can quit Bo & Lucky if I have to I guess.

Every time I pick up a book in this series I wonder what the author could possibly do with these boys that would surpass the previous books in the series. And every time she pulls it off, I stand in awe and walk around reliving the details for at least a few days.

This story was amazing, and though it may not have been as nail-biting and as dangerous to the men as some of the past books, in it's own way it was just as outstanding.

I love the secondary characters who have evolved to support the men, especially Loretta Johnson and Lucky's sister, Charlotte. Well, of course, Walter and Mrs. Smith, and then Lucky's nephew Ty, and some of the rookies Lucky's been training, or should I say trying to train. There's also a visit from Cruz and mentions of Lucky's mafia boss guardian.

One of my top 5 all-time favorite series, there's no Decision to make here. If you've read any of the previous books, don't hesitate to pick this up. And the surprise ending will remain a surprise until you read it. :p

Another terrific instalment in this excellent series. The plot is superbly put together and Lucky and Bo are as adorable together (Lucky would, of course, hate being called adorable!) as ever.

Darcy Stark's narration is outstanding - every character is perfectly characterised and immediately identifiable, and he completely 'gets' Lucky and Bo (Lucky especially, as he's the PoV character). He nails all the emotions, he's great in the action scenes, the love scenes are hot, tender, playful, full of passion - in short, perfectly delivered.

(Why the hell isn't he narrating more m/m romance??)

This was the perfect mix of love and suspense. Bo and Lucky are settled, and I love how they maneuver their relationship both at home and at work. There is plenty intense feelings, danger, humor and moments of blissful domesticity. Bo and Lucky are put to a life test and as always they pass with flying colors. The end is so sweet and romantic! I love these guys and their road to happiness. Hope there will be more Bo and Lucky in the future.

Another awesome buddy read with my buddy read friends Simone and Christelle and featuring pop in appearances from Shile and Josy.

Once again Eden Winters had not disappointed with her lastest addition to the 'Diversion' series and I hope to return soon to write an actual review for this one but in the meantime...read the book if you haven't already and if you haven't read the series yet...well damn stop depriving yourself of all the awesomeness that is Bo and Lucky and start reading.

I really enjoyed this one even if it could have been a tad shorter (it's 400p). I really liked the case it was complicated but easy enough to follow. I wish that Lucky and Bo communicated better in this one. There is no relationship angst at this point (obviously) but it takes them a while to talk to each other and I found that them keeping obvious secrets was getting old. I loved seeing the way they expanded their family. Last niggle, many plot points were rather predictable and easy but that was fine. Onto the last one!

Bo and Lucky are a favorite couple, and the mysteries in this series are always satisfying. It's fun to watch Lucky moving (with some kicking and screaming just for the look of it) toward being a total family man. Lucky's sister, her kids, and every small person they encounter are already under Bo's protective orbit at once, but Lucky feels the same way, he just likes to hide it for the sake of his reputation. This sometimes leads them to misinterpret each other, and communication is still not the guys' strong point.

Lucky's distrust of authority is also a problem, now that Bo is authority, on his way to taking over Walter's job. Lucky's conflicts between trusting Bo but not his job, and knowing that Bo would be torn between his innately honest approach and Lucky's rule-bending, are tough to navigate. Add in an upcoming birthday, and the feeling that somehow time and the world are changing around Lucky and within him, and he's more than a bit unsettled.

The plot, as usual, held together well, with a crime that had some emotional resonance. We also got a brief visit from an old friend, and some time with our favorite secondary characters. A couple of the twists didn't come as much of a surprise, but the guys are quintessentially themselves, and I don't get tired of hanging out with these two man. Looking forward to the next one.

Decision is the latest book in Eden Winters fabulous Diversion series. As I have said many times, this is one of my favorite romantic suspense series and Bo and Lucky are among my favorite couples. I have been thoroughly enjoying the books and have also been going back to listen to them in audio. For me, the two hallmarks of this series are the unique perspective on the drug trade, and the really engaging main couple in Lucky and Bo. Here, we once again get a case that focuses on prescription drug fraud and we can see the ripple effect in the way that what may seem like a small crime has a far reaching impact. By the time the story is over, it has touched on so many issues and it is a really fascinating web as all the pieces come together. In the early stages of the story, I did at times find it a bit hard to follow as all the pieces are laid out, but Winters really pulls things together well and it is another exciting and really interesting case.

Darcy did as grand a job as I expected. I cannot believe that the next book Benediction is the last we'll see of my fave narcotics agents Lucky & Bo, Walter, Rett and Charlotte. Surely they'll be shouting in Eden's ear for more stories? Oh, and how much longer is it going to take for Lucky to clue in that Char and Jimmy Salters are an actual item 🙂🙂?

God, I just love this series 😍😍😍. Cannot wait for Darcy Stark and the audio for this one...human trafficking, Ty getting drugs at school [and the operation to bring the perps to justice]...and at the end?? Fantastic, with happy tears from me. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Unfortunately, we are about to come to the end of Lucky and Bo's adventure. There is only one book left.
Lucky, whose story begins alone, first met Bo and took him into his life, and then eventually got his family back. Now, the family he founded with Bo is getting bigger and bigger.
Of course, in the meantime, they continue to deal with dangerous cases that cost Lucky a few things.
Let's see what awaits them at the end of their story.

Happy tears

I just adore this series and I’m hoping so hard there’s at least one more book to come. Eden is such a good writer; Lucky has changed so much since book one, without fundamentally changing as a character at all. Bo hasn’t changed quite as much, since he wasn’t as hard-boiled to begin with. Still as hot together as always, there’s not much hanky-panky in the narrative and with good reason. So many feels! I’m thinking the stray threads that remain dangling will make the last book a nail-biter.

I don't think I'll ever get tired of these two and the adventures they find themselves in. This instalment is my favorite so far. I laughed, I cried, there was more than one aww moment and the drama had me on edge. What more could I ask for... well, maybe another Lucky and Bo story?

Audiobook review

I was so happy when this book finally made its way into audio, it feels like it’s been forever since I last spent time with Bo and Lucky, and I was feeling the withdrawal…

Life is continuing for Bo and Lucky and the rest of the gang. Bo is training to take over after Walter at SNB and Lucky is training a new group of agents in undercover work. At home they love to have Charlotte and Ty living with them, even if things are a bit tense with the teenage boy but that’s only to be expected. But say the peace that lasts... One day Lucky finds a bottle of pills that Ty got from school, and I have to say that the way Lucky handled it with Ty really showed how far he’s come, that he can be calm and rational and not only the hot head we know and love. Obviously, it’s also something Lucky needs to investigate, unknown pills being handed out at a high school is not something he can, or will ignore.

The case in this book is two-fold, there are the pills in the school, but Loretta also found some suspicious activity in an abandoned warehouse. And while they investigate the latter they quickly realise that it’s much bigger than they initially thoughts, this drug ring isn’t only dealing in drugs, but also has a hand in human trafficking.

Story-wise Decision isn’t my favourite of the series, and it kind of took me by surprise. I’ve loved everything that happened in Bo and Lucky’s lives, loved watching them grow into the people they have become and the relationship they have. Each book sees them coming further, this book is no exception. But some of it felt a bit too convenient for me, and too rash, but that’s just me. Mystery-wise I really enjoyed it, it kept my attention for sure and it will be interesting to see what this will mean for Lucky going forward. I think it can be really good.

Darcy Stark is perfect for this series. He truly understands and knows each character and brings them all to life in a way that’s uniquely them. All of them have their own voice and personality clearly reflected in his performance. The books are worth reading in their own right, I dare you not to fall for Bo and Lucky, but listening to the books brings that extra layer. More than once I found myself stopping what I was doing to just listen to the book – and if you know me, that never happens. I always do a myriad of things when listening to audiobooks. But I was mesmerised.

There is one more book in the saga of Bo and Lucky and I can’t wait to see how this all ends. If you haven’t read or listened to this series yet, you need to change that now, but start from the beginning because you don’t want to miss a single thing.

“Not flesh of my flesh, nor bone of my bone but very remarkably, all my own. And never forget, for a single minute, that you weren't born under my heart, but in it.” ~ An Adoption Poem, author unknown.

Lucky is not a fan of birthdays. Although he is happier than he ever believed he would be, Lucky doesn’t like to reflect upon the fact that getting older means he is slowing down. In his words: getting too old for this s*#t, meaning what he has to deal with every day in his job as a drug enforcement agent and now, due to his vast expertise, as a trainer of new recruits. With Walter retiring and Bo taking over his position, Lucky knows that things are going to change drastically, both workwise and homewise; he is not sure he is prepared to deal with it.

One of the main issues between Bo and Lucky is Lucky’s reticence to trust anyone else but himself. Bo understands where he is coming from. After all, Lucky’s past has reinforced that attitude, but if he and Bo are going to have the relationship they want and deserve, Lucky has to learn to share his thoughts and feelings with Bo instead of burying them. It is especially important now that Lucky’s sister, Charlotte, has agreed to be a surrogate mom for them. Having a child is going to require a whole new level of needed cooperation and honesty. It is essential that he and Bo are on the same page.

Things get interesting when Rett comes to Lucky with what she believes is suspicious activity at an abandoned building near where she lives. Since it is not advisable to investigate alone, Rett enlists Lucky’s help. Even if there is something illegal going on, the crimes are not within their jurisdiction, but that is not going to stop them from checking it out. Lucky hates to lie to Bo, but he is so “by the book” that he is afraid Bo would, at best, not approve and, at worst, forbid them to continue. What seems to start out as is a human trafficking crime continues to snowball into a full-fledged and far-reaching drug trafficking scheme as well; the crimes being perpetrated have a scope that far exceeds their suspicions. And, because of who is involved, Lucky is placed in serious jeopardy.

I don’t think I will ever get tired of reading about Lucky and Bo. Just when I wonder where else Eden could take them, she creates new, exciting, frustrating, and emotional heights, some of which I would have never believed that the Lucky I’ve come to know and love would be capable of. He and Bo have been put through the wringer, both emotionally and physically, always managing to come out together, stronger and closer than before. Thanks, Eden, for another wild ride; with Bo and Lucky involved what other type of journey could it be?

I’ll start by repeating what I said in my review of the previous book in this series, I didn’t realize how much I missed Lucky and Bo until I had their latest adventure in my hot little hands. This series is truly one of my very favourite reads, and I urge anyone who has yet to dive into the world of Lucky Lucklighter and Bo Schollenberger to pick up a copy of Diversion (which is book #1) and get yourself lost in the world of the Southeastern Narcotics Bureau (or SNB, to those of us in-the-know). For those readers who, like me, are already mid-loveaffair with this couple, then make sure you’ve read the two short stories that precede book #8. I believe the links to the free reads can be found on the author’s website. The main reason you need to read these first is because one of the shorts is the story of what happened when Lucky finally met Bo’s family, family that make an appearance in Decision.

At this point in a series (book #8, and all focused on the same couple) sometimes I get the feeling that the author is grasping at ideas to keep the books going. However, I love the way that Eden Winters has managed to continue providing us with the work related shenanigans that we expect from these books, while evolving Bo and Lucky as a couple. As with the last book, their wider relationships with family and friends play a huge role here, which actually ties in perfectly with the personal growth of Lucky.

I don’t want to go into too much detail, because if you haven’t read the books it will make no sense anyway, and if you have, then Decision acts as an important turning point in this series going forward, and I don’t want to spoil what is going to happen.

I’m actually really excited about what the author intends for Lucky and Bo in the ninth book, while their path is fairly obvious I’d love to see how Ms. Winters tackles it. I mean, there’s still a bad guy on the loose, complicated drug rings to take down and I’m with Lucky – O’Donoghue is still on my radar as a possible bad guy. But two things remain certain when it comes to this series, Lucky and Bo will always be a solid unit, and Achy Breaky Heart should not be on any stripper’s play list…unless that stripper is an undercover agent named Bo Schollenberger.

I listened to this book twice because it had been too long since I read it & wanted to come up to speed before I tackled the last book.

It was still as good as I remembered except for "bantam rooster" being repeated far too many times, making me cringe every time.

I remember when I started listening to the first book and I thought I was going to quit because of how the narrator portrayed Bo's voice. It was so soft and gentle which seemed off for a man who was in the Marines and had other hard life experiences, but I got used to it and I guess it suited him much more than a gruff voice like Lucky's.

As far as the story, I have really liked the progression of the characters from the first book. There's definitely a lot of character growth and it was mostly believable.

I guess that trust does not come easily to these two no matter how much they love each other. They both kept on keeping ginormous secrets that were life changing. I don't believe that either is more deserving of forgiveness than the other but I do believe that Bo staying at the hospital and not letting Lucky know what was going on and not communicating wasn't great especially for the immense outcome of his omission of the truth and brushing Lucky off for weeks without letting him know what was happening. I thought Lucky had the patience of a saint and it was very admirable to not demand to know given his past. I could never have let it go on that long if it were me. It would have made me feel extremely insecure and start having serious doubts no matter how strong the relationship is.

Lucky is by no means much better especially getting himself in life-threatening situations without letting anyone know.

I guess it all worked out but I still have enjoyed how the story has flowed in my opinion. Sure it was a bit over the top, but it is fiction so it needs to be interesting. I am having a hard time articulating how I feel about the actual storyline but either way, I am impressed. I never knew I would like police procedurals as much as I do though.

This latest installment of Lucky and Bo proved a treat. A solid dose of grumpy, socially-averse Lucky ... full of snarky asides, cynical rants and reluctant thawing toward having a live-in family. There is less 'Bo moments' ... because the tale is given from Lucky's POV ... but also because Bo has been promoted in rank and Lucky has greater interactive duty with Loretta (a great secondary character in her own right) and a new recruited crew of narcotic agents. That said, there are truly delightful scenes involving Bo showing his tender side. And of course the author doesn't hold back on the hawt M-on-M action between them.

A host of secondary characters populate this book's pages - Charlotte, Ty, Walter, Jimmy the nurse and Cruz! Even the long arms of Victor and Nestor stretches all the way from Europe. The author nicely balances plot which continues to flesh out how two men are building a life and home together, making memories and plans for their future, alongside plot that focuses on combating pharmaceutical drug crime across all sectors of society, reaching all the way up to powerful legal roles. Drug rings and productions are uncovered, victims identified and rescued (& lost), with Lucky continuing to risk life and limb.

The greatest thing for me is the hopeful and celebratory ending .... which hints at more books to come! I know the author once said this was planned to be an eight book series but I'm so so glad this eighth main volume hints toward the curtain to not yet come down on two of my favorite characters. I'm avidly awaiting to see how Lucky and Bo's family continues to expand in the next books to come; they have a whole lot of new beginnings and traditions involving little people!
