Naomi E Lloyd is a writer who loves exploring both the dark and lighter sides of fantasy stories.

Where her debut series, Tandro, takes readers on a coming-of-age fantasy romance across another time and realm, her more recent series, Death Kiss, delves into a dark, supernatural world, full of deception, magic, and seductive twists.

But whether finding the light or delving into the dark with her fantasy stories, there is a common thread that weaves the dark-light themes of her storytelling together: connection--the journeys that shape rather than break us. For whilst her characters face tumultuous challenges, and sometimes traumatic experiences in her books, it is their resilience and determination that makes their journeys so transformative.

Formerly a law student at Warwick University, she started writing her debut series, Tandro, after the story concept kept popping up in her recurring dream. This was a multi-faceted story she couldn't let go of and one that sent her on a research journey across the world, to bring the story to fruition and finally realise her real-life dream of holding a book she had written in her hands.

Three books later, it was via another vivid dream that her next series, Death Kiss, was born. A dark fantasy story she felt so compelled to bring to life she wrote down the blurb within moments of waking up.

As a believer in listening to your dreams, Naomi's stories transport you into other worlds and times, give you characters you either root for or love to hate, and treat you to endings with unexpected twists and turns.

Although born in Yorkshire and a northern girl at heart, Naomi now lives by the historical beaches of Portsmouth, where she can often be found in a café, tapping away on her laptop or walking along the sunny promenade with her camera in hand.

I am an avid reader of time travel books, it’s one of my favorite plot points. And I think I can say that I’ve never read a time travel story quite like this.

This story is told in a back and forth format, separated into “parts,” told between the years 1866 and 2066 (give or take). So, not only does the main character, Tiegal, travel back to a time just after the U.S. Civil War, she lives in a time that hasn’t even happened yet. Hell, if I understood the settings correctly, she doesn’t even necessarily come from planet Earth — or, if she does, it’s some sort of other realm beyond what we ordinarily live in.

As stated above, the story is told between Earth in 1866 and Tiegal’s world in 2066. The entire story is in third person, but the parts that take place in 1866 mostly follow Johannes, the love interest. And I think those parts are the parts of this story that I enjoyed the most. Tiegal’s futuristic world was interesting and told pretty well, but I think it was just a little hard to wrap my head above. Actually, — and this is VERY rare for me to say, because normally I think a plot moves too fast — I feel like the first part of this book dragged on a little bit. Tiegal and Johannes don’t even come into physical contact for the first 100 or 150 pages of the book (that is, on Apple iBooks — calculated with my paging format, that’s about 35% into the story). Before that, I was able to catch the general gist of the story — Tiegal discovers a sort of lagoon that (I think?) allows her to see into the future, but I found myself kind of skimming things a little.

The writing, overall, was all right — I’ve read better, but I’ve also read way worse. The author definitely put a whole lot of detail into the plot, especially Tiegal’s world-building, but there were two notable things that I found issue with:

1. Comma misusage. Normally, I think I find more people using too MANY commas — I, myself, might be a little guilty of this — but I think the comma usage was actually pretty scarce in this story. As a result, some sentences don’t read very smoothly. I’m kicking myself right now because I had a specific example and lost it, but if I remember I may go back and edit an example into this review later.

2. The male love interest, Johannes, lives in the late 1860s. That’s just after the U.S. Civil War. And yet, I feel like his character — specifically, some of the things he says and the way he talks — was a little too... contemporary. His speech and mannerisms, and just... his overall mentality, seemed very off for being a young man in the mid-19th century. Of course, I do not support most of the beliefs of the mid-19th century era, but I do think there’s a way you can write historical characters (specifically white males) that is both accurate to the era AND doesn’t make them come off as total dickbags. Some of my favorite books take place in similar historical eras — off the top of my head, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice & Virtue by Mackenzi Lee takes place in the 1700s, and A Light Amongst Shadows by Kelley York and Rowan Altwood takes place in either the 1870s or 1880s — and I love those characters, because the authors managed to juggle being a good person with their corresponding historical virtues. And, they manage to get the dialogue and mannerisms as accurate as possible, too.

Overall, I think some aspects of this story could have been better, but it certainly was not a bad read. I think Johannes and Tiegal were cute — and, now that I think about it, Tiegal’s power kind of reminds me of Henry in The Time Traveler’s Wife — and I think it is still well worth checking out if you’re a fan of time travel romance. The world-building was this story’s best strength, I think, so if you can juggle alternating timelines, I do recommend giving this story a go!

When I first started Release, I had no idea what to expect. I'm not a huge fan of paranormal - aside from my current binge into paranormal mysteries thanks to my library's audiobook catalogue. However, within two chapters of Lloyd's addictive story, I was hooked. I was automatically drawn into Tiegal's inner turmoils, her wants and wishes, and the life she was forced to live under Tandroan law. I was rooting for Tiegal the entire time, and was left speechless at the end, in tears, from her story. I'm still shook, if I'm being completely honest. And I am really looking forward to Book 2 - I need to know the end of Tiegal's story! And I need to see more of Cezanne. I need it.

Atla, the tyrannical leader of Tandro and the creepiest bad guy I've encountered in his capacity since the Hunger Games was written in such a way that I, as the reader, feared him and wanted to fight him at the same time. Even in the Epilogue I loved to hate this man, especially as the whole world as he knew and understood it was threatened. Although there was a little bit of ironic sadness that went along with. I am stunned by how well Lloyd was able to craft Atla, and Parador. Let's talk about an evil henchwoman who definitely needs more scene time. I am also looking forward to Book 2 so I can see more of them and their scramble to match Tiegal.

And Johannes, I adore Johannes. He was refreshing for all the things he was, and all the things that he absolutely could have been but wasn't. He was strong, caring, and most of all, the perfect male lead that this story needed. Can we just have more male characters like Johannes? In all genres of fiction? I think he is exactly the kind of supportive, healthy male characters that our younger generations of readers - both male and female - need to be seeing more of.

All in all, without giving away any spoilers because this book is definitely one that needs to be enjoyed from cover to cover for yourself, I would like to part with this: Lloyd's passion for diamonds, and her real world, connected to create a fantastic fantasy/paranormal story that drew me in and kept me enthralled from start to finish.

An interesting exploration of intimacy and what it means to be human.

To be honest, this was one of the most interesting books I have ever read. It certainly leaves you thinking when you are done reading, and trust me, it’s not a book that you will have an urge to put down until the end.

This is an ok book. It's about love across time and space. Lots of conflicts. I found it hard to read. Lots of typos and lost paragraphs.

Timeless Love
4.5 stars for Book 1 in the Tandro series! This sci fi time travel romance was filled with beautiful imagery and the author did a great job of setting up the story world. Her descriptive writing made it easy to immerse myself in the futuristic settings and the characters were engaging. The beginning takes some time to get into but is well worth the journey as it sets the stage for the romance between Tiegal and Johannes to begin and the theme of a timeless love transcending dystopian societies was wonderful.

In the new world of Tandro, in the year 2065, sexual energy is currency and love connections are forbidden.
Advanced sensory abilities that drive her emotional energies to the limit make Tiegal more valuable than diamonds. If her ruler finds out, he will hunt her down. She must keep her passion hidden. Yet she yearns to unleash her powerful desires, explore the intimacy she craves, and find love.
And then she finds it. When an incredible release of energy transports her into the arms of Johannes, the passionate and romantic man she has been dreaming of. The only problem is, he exists on Earth in the year 1865. And, she has no idea how long she can stay there with him.
For Johannes, she is everything forbidden, sensual and other-worldly, all wrapped up in one bubble of attraction.
For Tiegal, Johannes is the one she saw in her dreams. She relishes exploring her sensual fantasies with him and finds a deeper connection than she could have ever dreamed possible.
But as they set about building a secret life together, amongst the excitement of the diamond rush, Tiegal soon learns that experiencing love, when you are from two different worlds means making painful choices.
How can she keep herself on Earth, and protect the ones she loves, when her enemies on Tandro will do anything to get her back?

Wow! What a book. It took me a bit to figure things out. There’s so much going on. I have no idea how the author was able to keep tract of all the characters and plots. This is the first book is this series. There is no cliffhanger, but there is a hint of the next book to follow. If you’re into Sci-fi romance and time travel, this is definitely a book you’ll want to read.

A fascinating concept with an amazing setting. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Tiegal and Johannes are an extraordinary couple who must overcome some difficult challenges to be together. The author has created a very unique world and the story kept me turning pages to find out what happened next. I’m looking forward to book two. What a great first book in the series.

A gripping tale that seamlessly crosses time and space - where a love larger than time itself brings together a couple from different worlds and periods. As an ME sufferer the theme of personal energy being precious really resonated with me. Loved this book.

*Thank you to Naomi E. Lloyd and Voracious Readers Only who sent me this free box set in exchange for an honest review.*

The world building of Tandro was so interesting to me. Release starts off in a futuristic world, that is a parallel universe to earth. The Tandroan people aren’t made from love, they are made from carbon of other people’s teeth and hair and being a donor of the carbon is a big achievement. I think one of my favourite parts of this series was this complex world building. Once they come of age, each person is given a diamond called a derado, which they touch to release their energy.

‘You were made from one remarkable love story. And something tells me… that you are going to transform everything.’

Tiegal is the main character, and she does not fit in with the Tandroan society’s rules as she longs to have a connection with someone, which is forbidden on Tandro. They believe that protecting themselves and their “own fire” is the way to a long and healthy life. Tiegal is different to the others as she was made in a slightly different way, stimulated by someone else’s thoughts. From a young age, Tiegal has dreamed of a mysterious man from another universe, earth. She longs to connect with this man and this creates the star-crossed (literally) lover trope.

Part two of the novel begins in earth and it is supposedly set in the late 1800s, however it felt like Johannes, the love interest, was using language that felt too modern and when I was reading I didn’t feel like I was in the nineteenth century. Despite this, I really enjoyed their love story as Tiegal releases so much energy that she transported to Johannes’ universe and sees him kissing another girl. I liked the character development from both Tiegal and Johannes as they faced many issues surrounding their relationship and I felt like it was a unique love story. Intimacy is forbidden in Tandro and this is a main theme of the books as they discover that a real connection releases more energy that the superficial diamond energy release.

Time Travel Sci Fi Fantasy with a Sparkle of Romance
I loved the fantasy world that Naomi Llyod built. It was magical, and other worldly.

The main character is Tiegal, who is a young woman trying to find her way in the futuristic world, where she lives. She's darling and I found myself rooting for her from the very beginning.

Tiegal resides under a tyrant ruler, who has created a way of life that does not allow for intimate connection or touch. There's a problem though, for she carries a deep secret- Tiegal's not like everyone else. Her journey begins with her trying to come to terms and understand why she craves love and connection, unlike the others of her world. Why is she so different and where does she come from?

Tiegal keeps seeing a hot young man in her visions. He's from another time and place, yet she feels a deep longing for him.
Will she ever know him for real or will he just live forever in her dreams?

If your a fan of sci-fi fantasy with an added sparkle of romance, this one is for you!
Thank you for your review.

I’m so glad I decided to read this book as I enjoyed it immensely. It’s not a genre I would normally read...... romance and time travel set in two very different worlds.... one in 2066 and the other 1865...... this is a long distance love story with a difference....
I really connected with the main female character Tiegal and loved how her strong emotions, energies came to life in the writing and story. Tiegal’s connection to people and animals was beautiful......I don’t wish to give too much away but just to say, if you think this book may not be for you, keep an open mind and prepare to go on an emotionally charged journey you won’t regret..... I’m totally hooked and can’t wait for the second book!!
I also love that Naomi is a local author living in Portsmouth, my residing city.

In a well ordered world where thoughts can be heard and words tasted, love is forbidden. Across space and time, threatened by the ruling elite can Tiegal reach the man she loves?
First in the Tandro series, Release takes us on a paranormal adventure that grips the imagination and whirls us into a world of colour, courage and destiny.

I thoroughly enjoyed this double genre book- the authors descriptions were out of this world- literally! Tiegal was a brilliant protagonist and I thoroughly enjoyed the love story between her and Johannes. I normally steer away from anything sci fi- but this booked ticked all the boxes of a brilliant romance, and then some! Cannot wait to read more in this series.

EDIT: *After reading Exchange, the last book from this saga, I definitely recommend reading this book. Even though the beginning of the story didn’t convince me, it’s final totally worth it.*

Tiegal is an 18-year-old girl, about to live her Release ceremony in which the youth of Tandro receive their Derado. A jewel capable of channeling their energy.
In Tandro interpersonal relationships have been eliminated. Babies are made with carbon donations from selected volunteers, in a pool with diamonds, which gives them the energy to grow.

One of the greatest effects of this form of reproduction are the eyes of the Tandroans. Their pupils have a diamond shape and shine like flashlights.

Tiegal feels totally out of place. Unlike others, she is unable to hide her thoughts and can read even those that others try to hide. This can be very problematic if your thoughts are constantly questioning the way of life and the robotic system that has created its leader, Atla.

Her dreams don’t help either. Always the same man, with animal eyes (according to Tiegal he has animal eyes because they don’t have a bright pupil), while she is enclosed in a bubble and tries to approach. Tiegal is sure that her destiny is to meet that man.

When Release day finally arrives, Tiegal receives her Derado. With it, she travels mysteriously to the world of the man of her dreams.

Until here the book was pretty confusing for me, as I couldn’t fully understand Tandro functioning. But once Tiegal and Johannes meet things became a little more interesting. While both feel they are destined to be together, their different worlds create quite funny situations between them.

To be honest, it meant a giant effort for me to finish this book. I just didn’t quit because I don’t like to leave books halfway, but it couldn’t keep my interest. However, the basic idea is excellent and not badly developed. In addition, all the facts are linked in time and space in a splendid way. However, this book was not for me.

I feel awful about making a bad review of a book, so I want to make it clear that it is only my perspective and if you like the style you may love it. It is basically a pink novel, in which the relationship becomes very important, especially in the descriptions, which probably made it boring for me. Also, I never connected with Tiegal. It seems to me that her reactions are exaggerated, and she always acts without thinking, which was understandable in the beginning, but she never seemed to grow. Johannes also disappointed me towards the end of the book.

It also has sexual content, not explicit but pretty clear.

This is a beautiful book. We follow Tiegal, a woman with remarkable abilities, who lives in a world where love is forbidden. When she falls for a man a whole world away, she does everything and anything she can to stay with him. Her people want her back, and not for a good reason. And the new world she finds herself in has dangers of its own. I was on the edge of my seat for most of this book and loved the twists and turns. A fantastic time travel romance. Highly recommend.

I loved this book! Strong woman from space who knows what she wants? Check. A hot man in touch with his emotions? Check. A plot I couldn't guess every step of? Check.
If you want a witty book that will keep you turning the pages grab this one. The worlds are well developed, the writing is on point, and the characters are amazing.
