In the name of the moon, you should read this!


ESSENTIAL TO ANY SAILOR MOON FAN

This is the first of five reference book published to tie-in with the premiere of Sailor Moon in the US television.

I am from Costa Rica, and we could started to watch Sailor Moon way before than its premiere on United States, at least a couple of years before.

So, when this books came here, Sailor Moon was already a hit and one of the most watched and popular Japanese anime TV series.

Each book of this series of five, is focused in one of the Sailor Scouts, where here is obvious that it's about the titular one, Sailor Moon aka Serena Tsukino (that in other countries was named Bunny or her Japanese original name Usagi).

This reference book is a wonderful collector's item, since not only you're able to read it all since it's on English, but also is full color in prestige paper and with a massive amount of information focused on Sailor Moon, like her family, friends, love interest, enemies, powers, etc...

Obviously, if you're fan of Sailor Moon, I recommend to get all the five books. (I was able to get four of them at the same time, I had to wait like a year to be able to get the one about Sailor Venus, but happily I completed them finally).

I very much disliked how they used the dub/English names for some characters/things, and the sub/Japanese names for other characters/things. Like, if you want to call the Outer Senshi "Haruka, Michiru, Setsuna, and Hotaru", then calling the Inner Senshi "Serena, Amy, Raye, and Lita" does not make sense. Do not mix the 2 sets of names.

Futhermore, anything that concerned the Outer Senshi got the Japanese name. So, regardless of using the Dub names for the Inners, we had the Dub Moon using the "Holy Grail" instead of the "Purity Chalice". I found the mix of name choices to be really annoying.

I also disliked that I saw a couple spelling errors in the book, such as "bines" for "binds", and some grammar mistakes, such as "Darien's decides". There is no excuse for that.

And, I found myself skimming some, once I got to the Encyclopedia section.

Overall, it was somewhat enjoyable. But, not near as much as it could have been, if it had been done correctly.

IM SO EXITED TO READ THIS BECUZ I LOVE THE SHOW(besides Saturn/Hotaru's ending) I will NOT spoil anything though I am desperate to. and yass people I'm weird like that.DEAL WITH IT! But her ending was TOTALLY UNFAIR!!!!!! Besides her it was great. #SailorMoon4life#WeloveandmissyouSaturn 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤💞🤯🤯🤯😞😞😞😨😔🥺 I FRIGGIN LOVED SATURN AND HOTARU!! But I guess it was for the best. This brought back so much nostalgia! I had the Sailor Jupiter guide growing up but lost it somewhere along the way and when I spotted this at a used bookstore I snatched it up so quickly.

I really and seriously don't know why these books are so sought after and often so pricey. They are a total mess. Apart from having captions in different directions which are annoying, they go to being from the sailor 'speaking' to just someone witting about them which is confusing when, like this book..Serena says "I'll tell you about.." then the comments aren't from her at all. Not just that, like in the other guides, they mix the Japanese and English names up. Like, in this, a comment says "Darien calls her dumpling head" which of course you know is not right. He only calls her that in the original Japanese! It should be 'meatball head!'. Not just that, the grammar is awful, like ". Darien calls her dumpling head" notice the space between Darien and "? Also, they make mistakes like 'moon prism power, make up!" which should not be for a English dub version book. It also says she transforms using the Luna pen into a Doctor, which we know she wasn't called in the dub, but a 'school attendant' or something like that. My biggest irk was that It said Luna said Serena is Sailor Moon and the Princess of the moon. Why is that so funny? Any fan should know what I mean, but if you don't, Serena doesn't find out until many episodes later after all of them are searching for her and she is revealed to be the princess. Luna just didn't meet her on day one and say "hey, you are the moon princess too!" which is dumb

There are a few others inconsistencies in the book and things that are confusing and also parts that look like they were written up by small children. The books ARE lovely image wise, which would explain the appeal I guess. I mean..I wanted them! But if you want to read and not just ogle the gorge cover and pics, this isn't for you :/ it is still a lovely book and being such a huge Sailor Moon fan and Sailor Moon being my favorite, I couldn't resist! I believe these were originally Japanese, which may explain the bad English translations

Another annoying part is that it only goes up to season 3, when we know the superS (season 4) season was dubbed. I guess it wasn't released when that was aired? But even in the sailor scout guides they show their super forms they only get in the superS season and even mention Pegasus. That is bizarre. Surely sailor Moon's second super form could be shown in this book? Funnily enough, Serena even says she is tomboy on page 29 and of course, an error on page 28 which annoys me -_- and on 29, it says "someone kept calling my late at night" more bad grammar and who kept calling her late at night exactly?! I could go on and on about all the errors In this book and ridiculous clumsy errors. (maybe Serena wrote it for real lol)

This review is going to be for the entire series (5 books). Most of the information found in these books can also be found in the manga or t.v. series. However, some information like the astrology and background on myth in the books helps provide more understanding for the series. Each scout has their own 5 favorite episodes, which is interesting. The best part about these guides is that they don't stick to the show that aired in America. They mention episodes not aired and situations that weren't in the show. I definitely recommend them for a fan.

I also have the guides for the other Senshi (I'm aware this one is only Moon's), and as a child I loved to reread this books because of the colorful pictures and fun facts about the main characters of my favorite series. Moon's was my favorite, I think they put more effort into hers than the others. Some of the facts are wrong in the other books. Yet, I think the guides are all fun to read because it's like the characters are talking directly to you about themselves!

i guess it was an okay guide. if you've seen about half of the episodes, then you pretty much know this entire book. the major battles mentioned in the book have a confussing number system. plus, the summaries would stop like half-way through the episode. yay...
