I really enjoyed this book overall. I haven’t read much by this author so I didn’t really know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised with this book.

Lone Witness, while it isn’t an action packed suspense, it keeps you turning the page. There are many POVs in this book which I actually didn’t mind. It shows the story from both the good and the guilty side. I haven’t read many suspense books when the POV was the bad guys side a lot but I actually really enjoyed it. It was unique and not quite what I’m used to reading in suspense, which I really enjoyed. Also, even though it did show things on the guilty side, there was still a couple different characters that didn’t come out until the end. So while it did show their side and I loved that, it still kept a couple bad ones in the dark for awhile.

There was two cases this book focused on, one with a gang and the other with a bank. As I said earlier, this book wasn’t action packed but having the two cases definitely keep things interesting. While both cases were good, I really enjoyed the one with the gang. With Sophie witnessing a shooting and then having to go against the biggest gang members brother in court, it’ll keep you turning the page. I loved all of the times in court when either witnessing or debating, and then having to wonder if the attacks were the gang going after Sophie for what she said in court. That’s one thing I really enjoyed about having two cases going on.. you don’t know which side the attacks are coming from. I really enjoyed the suspense in this book and how it was different than most.

This is a great suspense book and I definitely recommend it!

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed this one so much more than the first one! It starts off with a bang and kept me going all the way through the end.

I really enjoyed Sophie. I loved getting to know her. I loved to see how she was determined to fight for justice. When things got tough, she didn't back down.

There is a lot of supporting characters that I'd love to see more of. I know that the third book will probably focus on Sophie's friend Mia.

I received a copy from the publisher for free in order to share my thoughts and opinions. I was not required to like the book.

Recommended to fans of legal thrillers, romantic suspense

Lone Witness had a lot of danger and a sweet romance story. I love the way Rachel Dylan writes legal thrillers; I can follow along with the story and not get lost in the legalese.

In Lone Witness, Sophie witnesses a double homicide and is the only eyewitness. The killer is the younger brother of the head of one of the biggest gangs in Atlanta. Suffice it to say, she might be in a bit of danger because of that.

I liked the romance between Sophie and Cooper. It was great how they already knew each other since they had met once at a birthday party. I liked seeing how their relationship grew in the midst of all the danger.

All in all, Lone Witness was a great read. I really enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the next one (which I'm guessing is about Mia?). If you like suspense novels, you'll probably enjoy Lone Witness.

I think this is my favorite book by this author yet! Lone Witness allowed me to peek into what it is really like to be a lawyer, albeit with some extraordinary circumstances thrown in! From digging through documentation to being in a courtroom setting, from witness prep to dealing with ruthless clients, this book had it all.

I really liked these main characters and the complicated emotional journey they were on. Not only did Sophie and Cooper have to work to stay alive when Sophie ended up targeted, but they also had some intense feelings growing for each other at the same time.

This story was very interesting, had a great romantic thread, and kept me eagerly turning pages till the very end.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Book two in Rachel Dylan's 'Atlanta Justice' series is another winner. Sophie Dawson, a prosecutor for Atlanta's Fulton County DA's office is just entering into her first case with a local bank employee who is cheating customers. She desperately wants to bring justice to those who have been wronged. Then, stopping for a snack at a convenience store after working late, witnesses two people shot down in cold blood. She gets a good look at the shooter and now she has is trying to outrun a target on her back because the shooter is a member of a gang.

Cooper Knight is hired by Sophie's father to be her personal security and soon he's protecting her for real against several threats on her life. Sophie is unwilling to back down on anything right now and both cases are important to her.

Rachel Dylan dials up the suspense big time here, giving readers likable characters and plots within plots. She also throws the whole thing up in the air with a big wow of a surprise at the end! I did not expect that! Great job! Recommended if you enjoy legal thrillers such as Robert Whitlow.

*My thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book. The opinions stated here are entirely my own.

"Tonight she was not here as a prosecutor, but as a witness."

When senior assistant district attorney Sophie Dawson becomes an eyewitness to a double homicide, she quickly experiences what it is like to be under the microscope of an aggressive defense lawyer, not to mention the fact, that the accused is the little brother of a notorious Atlanta gang leader. Forced to divide her attention between preparing to witness and pressing forward with her own high profile White Collar Crimes Unit case, Sophie finds herself directly in the cross hairs of some very dangerous criminals.

"You have a huge target on your back. And Juan Wade doesn't miss . . . . . "

Cooper Knight, co-owner of a private security firm, has been employed by Sophie's father to shadow his daughter, after it becomes apparent that someone associated with her case load is threatening Sophie with bodily harm. The lovely blond attorney is surprised when Cooper makes his presence known and little miffed that her father has intervened, but it's not long before Sophie is thankful for Cooper's presence; the threats against her safety suddenly escalating, as her court date draws near. They have met in the past, having mutual friends, but something about this time seems different, and a lot more interesting.

With its impressive legal savvy and fast paced scene changes, Dylan's readers are sure to be impressed. . . . .especially with the ending.

I received a copy of this book from the author through Net Galley. The opinions stated are entirely my own.

Another great legal thriller from Dylan! I had trouble getting into the story at first, but the courtroom scenes were so authentic and loved how Sophie was prepared to being on the witness stand. The author has SUCH a talent for putting together realistic cases in fiction that make the reader feel as though this is EXACTLY how lawyers operate on a daily basis. Even though I never connected with Sophie in this story, she has an amazing heart and she really does want to see justice for the victims' families.

Cooper is such a great protector and I loved getting to know him in this story. I had trouble feeling the chemistry between him and Sophie, but was glad they were well suited for one another.

Loved Sophie's Dad, too! So glad her best friends had a few scenes as well. Can't wait for Book 3!

Even though this wasn't my favorite Dylan book, I'm still amazed by the story and how brilliant it's put together. The people you THINK to root for in this one may not be the ones you're cheering for in the end. I HATED Ashley's character, but was amazed how her part in the story turns out. There was more killing in this book than I expected, too, but it felt like everything concluded as it needed to. So happy that Sophie got her happy ending and so grateful for authors like this one who write clean thrillers with an element of faith in the characters :)

I was given a free copy of this ebook from the publisher via NetGalley. I was not required to write a review, the comments are my own.

Having read “Deadly Proof,” I was greatly anticipating this second book of the series. For those wondering, it can easily be read as a stand-alone, as it features different characters than book one.

It took me about five chapters to get into the story, as there was a bit of info dump. But once the story began, I was intrigued by who was who and what all was really going on. Dylan does a great job with twisting things and making you suspect the wrong characters (though, having read several of her books by now, I’ve gotten used to her style, so things didn’t take me off-guard in this novel, because I was already analyzing just where her special twist in this story might be).

The romance wasn’t the main theme of the story, though it was definitely in there. Mentions of “fiery touches” as well as a few kisses (before the guy realized he loved the girl? Sorry, I just don’t get that). But I would say it was more of a thriller than a romance, which is no complaint from me!

The spiritual side was a little weak. Both Sophie and Cooper admitted to having a “quiet faith” that they didn’t talk about, and yet they said they saw strong faith in the other person simply by how they lived. There was a mention of going to church, a lot of questioning God’s purposes, but the spiritual plot didn’t stand out to me as being more than their acknowledgment of God.

There were a few things that didn’t feel fully resolved to me. I realize there is at least one more book in this series, so it could have been intentional on the author’s part. I’m wondering why the emphasis on Patrick and Ashley, as it didn’t really seem to fit the entire context of the story and at times felt thrown in there. This is the writer in me speaking, though, so I don’t think it will hinder readers from enjoying it!

It was fascinating to read the behind-the-scenes details of courtroom proceedings for both the prosecuting side and the defense side. I've always understood the prosecutor's side - I mean we all want the bad guy brought to justice. But Dylan made me think how quickly we are to believe someone guilty if they have an unsavory background and that defense attorneys are there to make sure everyone has a fair trial. But I digress. Lone Witness is a grab-you-by-the-throat story about a prosecutor who witnesses a murder. She's also prosecuting a criminal case and you never know for sure which of the bad guys are trying to take her out.

Dylan's characters are three-dimensional and you quickly care about Sophie and the hero, Cooper Knight. You want to see them get together, but he has so much baggage...(don't they all ;-) ) It was fun to watch him thaw a little. If you like romantic suspense I believe you'll enjoy Lone Witness!

Sophie Dawson is a prosecutor in the White Collar Crime Unit, working on financial fraud cases. It should be less dangerous than criminal prosecutions, and it is … until she witnesses a robbery that leaves two people dead, and identifies the perpetrator as the brother of one of the city’s gang leaders. And she’s the lone witness.

I really enjoyed Deadly Proof, the first book in Rachel Dylan’s Atlanta Justice series.
But I didn’t enjoy Lone Witness as much. I enjoyed the legal aspect from Sophie’s viewpoint, but did find the number of point of view characters distracting as it wasn’t obvious why I was seeing their side of the story.

And I wasn’t altogether convinced by the romance subplot—it all felt a little too contrived, rather than reading like a natural development. It wasn’t bad. It just wasn’t the standard I’d expected after reading Deadly Proof. I think that was partly the fault of the dialogue, which seemed a little too formal, too wooden, for characters who were supposed to be falling in love.

The legal thriller/suspense element to Lone Witness was well done.
The suspense is enhanced as the reader soon understands what Sophie and Cooper don’t know: that Sophie had two separate sets of enemies … and that the attacks on her life weren’t coming from where she and Cooper thought. There was a neat twist at the end of the story that I didn’t see coming, so that was well done.

I also enjoyed the legal aspects, which showcased the author’s own legal experience in Grisham-worthy courtroom scenes. Overall, I’m sure legal suspense fans will enjoy Lone Witness.

3.5 stars. Lone Witness is the second book in the Atlanta Justice series. Lone Witness is inspirational suspense meets legal drama, and features two cases that become deadly and one woman who dares to stand and fight for justice.

Sophie Dawson is devoted to finding justice for those who can’t fight for themselves, and a recent career move into white-collar crime as a prosecutor gives her the opportunity to do just that. But a late-night snack stop turns into a nightmare when she witnesses the murder of two people. Sophie must straddle both sides of the courtroom, as a witness and as prosecutor, as she juggles being a key witness in the shooting case and her own investigation into a money theft scheme. When her life is threatened, she must rely on private security guard Cooper Knight to keep her safe - even if spending more time with Cooper endangers her heart.

I really enjoyed all the legal aspects of Lone Witness. It was interesting to see duel sides of the legal justice system as Sophie balances being both a prosecutor and a witness. The preparation and investigation that is involved in both roles is thrilling and informative. I enjoyed the legal techniques and strategies employed. I also enjoyed the many perspectives that are portrayed in the story. The chapters are narrated from the perspectives of multiple characters. Naturally, Sophie’s perspective, as a key character, dominates, but Cooper’s perspective is also shared, as are the perspectives of the prosecutor and defending lawyer involved in the murder case.

While I enjoyed the legal drama and the suspense it brought to the plot, I didn’t enjoy the romance nor the overall writing style of Lone Witness. The writing style was very formal and stilted. It felt like everything was being told to the reader instead of shown, and it left me feeling distanced from both the story and the characters. I also felt ambivalent about the romance. It seemed so sudden, Sophie’s feelings for Cooper and vice versa. One moment they are distance acquaintances and the next they are talking about creating a family and setting expectations around a possible relationship. While I do appreciate situations where the people involved are open and honest about their feelings, it just seemed a quick jump. Didn’t they want to just spend some time together first? Maybe chat about their favourite things, laugh over a shared joke, something that would give them a connection other than a supposed chemistry? While Cooper’s doubts do slow the progression of their relationship down, and the focus does remain on the action and unfolding drama of the court and investigation cases, I never truly became invested in Cooper and Sophie’s relationship.

While Lone Witness it is the second book in the Atlanta Justice series, both books are stand-alones and can be read independently. I recommend Lone Witness to readers who enjoy legal suspense, with a touch of romance and plenty of life-threatening drama.

The publishers provided an advanced readers copy of this book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.

This book was a very suspenseful book with twists I didn't see coming. I love a good legal thriller and this one did not disappoint. I was riveted from the first page until the last. This is the second in the series and features the ADA, Sophie Dawson. She is in danger of her life, and her security agent, Cooper does his best to keep her safe. This book is action packed and has a romance between Sophie and Cooper. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to Mia's story.

Senior ADA Sophie Dawson is prosecuting a large bank while sitting on the witness stand for a double homicide trial. But which case is putting her life on the line?

There are a few players to keep track of and the ones I thought were the bad guys weren’t always the villains I imagined them to be. The investigation, preparation for trial, and courtroom scenes are what pushed the story forward, drawing me into the pages.

Both Sophie and Cooper Knight—the bodyguard Sophie’s dad hires to protect her after she witnesses a murder—have real-life issues they must work through before they can make a go at a relationship. Rachel Dylan doesn’t shy away from hard topics like grief, panic, or abuse. There is a lot of avoiding the attraction between these two, but when lives are at stake, they are forced to face the truth.

Dylan’s experience in law shines through the pages of Lone Witness, putting readers in the courtroom as well as behind the scenes in preparing for a case. The question of who is behind the danger surrounding Sophie adds to the intensity of another great read in the Atlanta Justice series.

4.5 Stars! Rachel Dylan has upped her game in this one. It’s suspense from beginning to end. With being a witness and an attorney the action is non stop...this keeping the reader guessing. Except that at the end, I didn’t fall for the big surprise. I knew...which is probably just because I read a lot in this genre, but it made it somewhat anticlimactic for me. I was also a bit perturbed that the FBI couldn’t figure it all out ( yes, I realize it is fiction, but really the characters here are so real! I’m totally IN this book.)!

Great plot, twists, and I really enjoyed the characters in this read. Ultimately, that’s usually what makes me really enjoy a story. For any mystery or suspense fan, DO NOT miss this book! Just go buy it because I’m not giving spoilers, as hard as that may be!

LONE. WITNESS by Rachel Dylan.
Sophie a prosecutor , loving her job, even though it usually ended up late at night. Stopping at a convince store, she ends up being a witness to a double homicide, and gang related. Special prosecutor Patrick has been assigned to the case. Her father hires a bodyguard, which didn’t please her, and now getting threathing letters. Everything escalated with the trial, as does the readers, the tense plot, and will there be a guilty verdict, and is Sophie kept safe. A story that grabs you, the plot flows, and questions need answers, very well written.

This was a very intense, but very interesting story. The main characters were portrayed in a way that made you care about them and what happened to them. Prosecutor Sophie Dawson is a "workhorse". She stays late at her job and often skips eating. One fateful night she leaves work late, stops at a convenience store for a junk food snack and unwittingly witnesses a double murder. Being the only witness, she is in danger. The culprit is the brother of a notorious gang leader in the Atlanta area. Attempts on her life begin and she is assigned a body guard, Cooper Knight, by her father. Another case she is working on for her job also entails danger so it's always a guess at where the danger is coming from.
This will keep you wondering, wavering back and forth, and dish out some surprises in the end. Throw in a little romance, faith testing and danger and find the makings for a very satisfying read.
Although it's book #2 in the Atlanta Justice series it can be read alone. But I highly recommend book #1, Deadly Proof, as an excellent read also.

This legal thriller kept me engaged with not only the danger which started with a bang but also with two different legal cases, and a lot of possible villains.

Then different POV’s from both innocent and guilty also brought a different suspense to the plot.

Fans of romantic suspense authors such as Lynette Eason, Patricia Bradley, and Cara Putman will likely enjoy this series from Rachel Dylan featuring a trio of female attorneys. The author’s experience as a litigator gives authenticity to her plots, and does so without overwhelming the reader with legalese, and this particular story even manages to combine both a civil and a criminal case, with Sophie Dawson being the prosecutor in one and the sole witness in the other.

While I generally enjoyed the legal intrigue, I did find the writing relied heavily on telling rather than showing, particularly when it came to the growing relationship between Sophie and Cooper. They each make reference to their ‘intense physical chemistry’, but I didn’t feel this chemistry in their interactions. Cooper also has a backstory that has led him to conclude he can never have a wife and family, and while he inevitably reaches a different conclusion by the end of the book, I felt like I hadn’t experienced that change of heart alongside him and just had to take him at his word.

The other thing I wasn’t sold on in this story was sharing it among five different point-of-view characters. Besides Sophie and Cooper, there were both the prosecuting and defending attorneys in the criminal case and a private investigator hired by the bank involved in Sophie’s civil case. This gave the reader a wider picture of what was going on and increased the tension, but I was left a little unsure how I was supposed to feel about some of these characters. It’s difficult to say much without giving spoilers, so perhaps it is enough to simply say that I see-sawed between whether the three extra point-of-view characters were beneficial to the story or distracting.

Notwithstanding these personal preferences, there’s enough danger and intrigue to keep readers hooked into the story, and possibly even a few surprises along the way.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Lone Witness by Rachel Dylan is the second novel in the series. I enjoyed the storyline of the prosecutor, Sophie in the role of witness. Rachel always creates a sweet chemistry between her characters and showcases the role of great friends in our life. She also creates characters that have struggles that make them more human and readers can relate to.
Sophie is a prosecutor who witnesses a gang related murder and ends up being the star witness for the trial. In addition, she is working as a prosecutor on an embezzlement case.
Her dad hires a body guard when the threats start. As the threats on her life start escalating she goes into a safe house. I enjoyed the scenes with her dad and the backstory of how close they were as a result of her mom dying. Sophie still struggles with the loss of having a mom.
I was pleased to see that although Sophie was a strong female she was smart enough to not make bad decisions when her life was in danger.
Cooper is the co-owner of the security firm. He becomes her body guard and later engages his co-workers/friends to assist with both of Sophie’s cases to assist in keeping her safe.
The parallel storylines added even more suspense since you were not really sure who was behind each attack.
Rachel’s experience as a lawyer shines through in the details of the storyline. The prepping of Sophie as a witness and seeing how hard it is to be cross examined even for a prosecutor was informative and interesting.
I highly recommend Lone Witness if you like suspense and sweet romance.

This is a 3.5 rating for me really.
Loved the suspense part. The plot was good.
Sophie is a prosecutor who has witnessed a double homicide. The culprit however is the younger brother of a gangster. Suddenly Sophie's life is in danger .When she gets multiple attacks nobody is sure who is after her. She is after all a prosecutor who has enemies. Her father is not taking chances and has hired Cooper to keep her safe. But Cooper has feelings for her. Will it interfere with his job?
What about the case of Shelton and the bank? Is there something more going on? Why does it look like her boss does not want the case to go to trial?
I gave this a 3.5 because I felt the romance plot was not fully developed. Didn't really get invested in their love life enough to be rooting for it. And I started reading this book with the expectation that it was a romance book.
Will definitely read this author again because I love legal thrillers. This time my expectations will be more for the suspense than the romance.

Thanks to net galley for an advance copy of this book. This is my honest review of the book.

Sophie Dawson is one tough cookie! Despite her perilous position as the sole witness of a gang-related double homicide, Sophie continues to work tenaciously on building her other assigned case in the white collar division.

Cooper Knight is fully committed to his current task of keeping Sophie safe in every possible way, including protecting her heart from the growing attraction between them. Cooper has plans for his life and romantic relationships are not included.

Courage is not the absence of fear but the power to act in the presence of fear… in my opinion, Sophie and Cooper are truly courageous! I highly recommend this engaging series and eagerly anticipate the release of book three!
