While I haven’t tried out any of the recipes, yet, I am very impressed with the layout and contents of this cookbook. Advertised for “young chefs,” I found that I was interested in the cooking tips, definitions, and the unique way of presenting recipe instructions and I’m quite a seasoned cook. The authors list ingredients first, as is the norm, but all prep work is listed next and then cooking/assembling directions. This may make for a few more dishes to clean up, but seems like a very logical way of working. There are icons indicating levels of difficulty, heating method, and if knives are needed which is important for younger users. The recipes are grouped as staples, snacks, sweets, drinks, and mixes and the entire list is included alphabetically just before the index. It is my hope that there is a second volume that includes entrees and side dishes. Reading level is at least fifth grade, but if used with an adult, would also be appropriate for younger elementary aged students.

Thanks for the preview copy, Amazon Vine.

Learn cooking basics before jumping in with recipes teaching you how to make kitchen staples from scratch (everything from ketchup and butter to graham crackers and sprinkles).

As someone who needs a kids-level cookbook to learn basic kitchen skills, I really appreciated the thorough photos and explanations at the beginning of this book. (Yes, even some grown-ups need a clear explanation of what every kitchen appliance and tool does!) I'm not personally interested in making many of these kitchen staples from scratch, but I really enjoyed the style and simple instructions, so I will be looking for more books in this series. Kids featured in photos are majority (though not exclusively) white.
