Holly has had a year to deal with the family-sized portion of Old Magic she has inherited. Her focus is on the future, but when both the Coven and the past come calling, the future she has imagined seems to be slipping form her grasp.
If the past is truly a different country, it turns out it is a dark and bloody one that shares a border with the present – a border that is frequently crossed.
Holly needs to right a past wrong and lay some old ghosts, without becoming one herself, if she is to come to terms with her present and claim her future.

I read the first book in this series, Witchlight, a while ago but made the decision not to re-read before picking this book up because I have a huge backlog.
And it didn't matter - J.S managed to scoop me back into the story quickly, and throughout the story there were references and recaps to the previous book. Holly is a witty, slightly baffled woman thrust into witchy powers, juggling her witchlight and the mundane world the way most late-30s women do - thinking they're not quite managing as well as everyone else.
There are twists and hooks to keep the reader turning the page, big questions that linger from the previous book, and a whole set of new ones. Plus it's set in a vast Coven library. And, as an ex-library assistant, I know all the best stuff happens in libraries. This is a fun, quick read with engaging, well-drawn characters.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. It was fun, witty and innovative and an excellent follow-up to Witchlight. It managed to combine humour and darkness, while taking forward the characters we met in Witchlight and highlighting that everything we do has consequences. Both magical and realistic and the writing, is, as previously, of excellent quality.
