An excellent planning resource!

European travelers will find that experience and time are the limiting resources when it comes to pre-planning a first trip to a destination as large and complex as the Big Smoke. The Eyewitness Travel Top 10 format provides more than enough details to allow for an informed choice between competing destinations but unlike many of the competing alternative guides, it makes no attempt to be encyclopedic drowning an unsuspecting reader in so much knowledge that choices become next to impossible.

Eyewitness Travel Guides seem to have the market beat by a long margin! That's not to say that Lonely Planet, Frommer, Michelin or the Blue and Green Guides miss the mark entirely but the Eyewitness series, in general, seems to be more informative. The photographs and illustrations instill a higher degree of keen anticipation and provide a better means of choosing in advance between a world of competing destinations and alternative tourist attractions. And I can't say enough about the Top 10 format ... dozens of lists - events, restaurants, hotels, museums, walks, churches, bars, great spots for children, insider tips and so much more. Whether your taste in vacations runs to exploring the hot night life spots or scoping out the most exciting history that museums and art galleries have to offer, TOP 10 LONDON will make your trip easier to plan and more enjoyable in the doing.

Portability, durability, sensible layout and organization not to mention the included maps of the city and the metro system make Top 10 Paris the correct choice to tote along with you while you're actually out and about in Paris as well.

Finally, TOP 10 LONDON is a great way of post-filling information and details into some of the holes or places that you might miss or have to rush through when you're actually on the trip. Along with photographs and trip journals, it's also a wonderful way to resurrect detailed memories of a trip long after you've returned home.

All my personal favorites are included! The V&A (Victoria & Albert Museum) is not to be missed! Whenever I am fortunate enough to visit London I just have to see their latest exhibition. When I first heard of it, I thought it was a museum of the history of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. In actuality, it is a museum of art and design and it is glorious!

I love this series of guidebooks and find them a great overview for wherever in the world I am dreaming of going. The pictures are always great also!

London is such an awesome city with sooo so much to see, and choosing what you want to do and how to spend your (usually) very limited time there can be quite a challenge.

The Top 10 London travel guide is incredibly handy. I'm not exactly sure how many times I've used it already, but I've had it for years, and it never disappointed me. For one, it's clearly structured. There are basically three parts. In the first part, the top attractions are introduced (among the top 10, there's the British Museum and the Tower of London), followed by various top 10 lists (for example "Top 10 Moments in History", "Top 10 Royal London", "Top 10 Pubs" or "Top 10 London on Foot"). The second part focuses on the different areas of London, introducing each area and comprising - how could it be different? - top 10 lists again. For every area, the top sights, shopping places, restaurants, and more categories are listed. Furthermore, there's a suggested timetable for every area (for those who are too lazy to plan anything by themselves). The last part includes different tips, for example on planning your trip and getting around in London.

What makes the travel guide so useful is that you can get an overview really fast. Not only is it super-well structured and includes all those little lists, but also are there many pictures and little maps to find your way around. Although there is little text, all the important information is included (as for example the opening hours of the sights and places). I love that! If ever I want to know more about a particular site, I can buy a book on it. Or just google it. More text and information on each site would just make the guide less clear.

The maps in the front and the back of the book (one of them is somewhat broader, the other one zooms in a little) are very useful, as well as the tube map. The same maps are attached as a folded map which can be taken out separately and fits perfectly in every pocket.

You might think that TOP 10 refers to the Top 10 places YOU MUST VISIT when in wonderful London. But it's actually better and more useful than that. The book is actually about the Top 10 things to see when at more-than-10 nifty places in London.

There's the Top 10 things at the British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Museum, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's, Westminster, and more.

And beyond that there are lists of Top 10 for famous residences, pubs, shopping, restaurants, and more.

For restaurants, for example, there are two 'initial' pages of info. A list of 10 Top places to eat, followed by a mini-list of the Top 10 places to eat With-A-View. The book gives you a short description of the cuisine as well as info like whether you'll need reservations. At the end of each short paragraph, the book usually refers you further back in the book where you can find addresses, phone numbers, and map-references.

Which brings me to the maps. One of the things I love about this book, besides the fact that it is small and suitable to keeping in a camera bag or hand bag, are the maps. The front page unfolds 3 times to give you two nicely plasticized maps. The outside map has colored blocks that give 'districts', like Regent Park, versus say, Covent Gardens. In inside map has major roads, and little markers which show train stations and points of interest. It runs from Kennington in the south to Islington in the north. [This front-of-the-book map only runs from the Hyde Park area on the west to the Tower area on the east.]

The back map focuses on West End, Minister, and the South Bank --on the inside. On the other side is a SITE INDEX and a SELECTED STREET INDEX, both of which have map keys. You will need this. I will need this. I've been to London a couple of times but if you are there for fun, by the end of the day you'll be exhausted enough that you'll need this sort of assistance.

I didn't want to write a long review, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the glossy map that is included with the book. This map sits in a plastic pocket and folds up small enough that you could put it in your coat pocket. Or even a shirt pocket. It has a map of the tube system, city map and list of 10 Useful Phone Numbers, 10 Free Sites, and 10 Historic Sites. A useful tool.

For being a small volume, TOP 10 LONDON contains a lot of information. It's not as thorough as the beefier books that are available out there; but its one I plan on buying (currently reading the library's new book) because it's just a great size and perfect for toting around during the day. With it's maps and structure I'm convinced it will help my husband and I to make our first trip to London with our children a pleasant one. The quick guides will remind us what else we might want to see if we're in a particular area, and hopefully will help us to stay flexible. Tired of museums.... Hmm, well how about shopping. We aren't people to stick to a rigid plan. This will help.

DK Eyewitness Travel Guides are much more than a simple guide. While they do offer sections geared to food and lodging, the selections listed are cursory at best and the traveler can do as well or better by looking on-line to hotel or lodging sites. As for restaurants, I've always felt it was best to discover restaurants when you're in a place from word-of-mouth recommendations.

No, what the Travel Guides do better than any other guides is to tell you what to see, and WHY you want to see it. The books are filled with color pictures and 3-D (I think they're called "3-D") drawings that go beyond the verbal descriptions and into a unique visual display. These books are so good that I really think students can use them for school work.

Anyway, the "DK Eyewitness Travel London 2017" is another excellent guide in their series. I'm going to London in February and although I've been many times, this book has given me a couple of new-to-me places to visit. They don't neglect the sites that a first time visitor will want to see and provide an "inner look" at those sites.

The only problem with the Eyewitness Guides is that they're so handsome that a traveler doesn't want to rip it apart to take the good parts along in the suitcase. So, I'll be traveling with the guide!

I have absolutely no idea how to rate a travel guide, but this reminds me of London with its chilliness, lovely accents, and happiness, so it was great (and it managed to keep me interested enough to read the whole thing, which is a first when it comes to guide books—although that may have happened because of my excitement for the trip and not the guide itself). First it suggests the top places to visit in general, and then goes on to the best of each neighborhood, which I thought was helpful. Also, the historical background it gives to some of the monuments and attractions were pretty interesting. Overall, good if you're looking for a more broad view of London. :)

I read this book before each of my trips to London. I took it on my first trip but I bought an updated DK Eyewitness travel book for my second trip.

I enjoy the DK series & their layout. Great background information, tips, and advice.

Nice try. A top 10 list of many things. What makes the list? What classifies a place as a 5th or a 7th? Magic. At least tripadvisor is free with an adblocker.

Great, concise guide if you're looking for something short and portable. Includes a useful, laminated pocket map that you can mark on and then erase.

A very informative read with great suggestions for places to visit, shop and dine. What was most handy came in the tips for travelers concerning travel, lodging and getting around. I would recommend this for anyone planning a trip to London. There is so much to know ahead of time, that this book should be a staple in planning the perfect trip.

Decent overview of London. London is such a big city with so much history and so much activity, it is difficult to prepare a proper guide. Top 10 does an adequate job of selecting some of the more prominent options. Good as a complement to other research for things to do in London, but perhaps should not be your only guide.

The Eyewitness Travel Top 10 Guides have very helpful maps and useful pictures. However, the content was just OK. These mini-guides are meant to just give you brief concise information in priorities, but I didn't think this guides information and priorities were as helpful.

This one was okay. I will definitely refer to the full version London guide from the same publisher than using this as a shortcut. I also read Top 10 Vienna/New York/Paris and they were much better written. I think a travel guide without a unique voice is just a...map.
