This was a fantastic gothic romance!!!! I have always loved gothic romance and from the beginning something about this cover drew my attention! It reminded me of the gothic covers I loved as a teenager. Devil at the Gate had all the things I love. A dark handsome dangerous duke and a gusty heroine that wasn't intimated by him and even held him at bay with a blade! Not many young women would have entered manor gates with gargoyles guarding the gate and a big back dog that looked like Satan's own. But desperate to get away from her creepy stepfather and with her dying mother telling her to run Harriet Russell doesn't have a choice. Redmond Barrington is scarred by love and after his wife cheats on him with his own brother and both end up dead he is basically shut down and after years of people whispering calling him a murder and a beast who's depraved he's learned to keep others at bay by giving them what they want. But when Harriet comes to his door looking for help after her carriage flips and hurts her driver he's intrigued by how she stands her ground and even tries to best him in his own house . And even when Redmond acts beastly and invades her personal space its Harriet that gets the upper hand. Loved this couple and the chemistry and banter was witty and natural. And the addition of the ghosts was a nice touch that gave this tale a spooky gothic atmospheric feel. Lauren smith is a fabulous writer and her characters intriguing and memorable. Until next time Luv's💕💋

To enjoy this book you need to be okay with the paranormal, specifically ghosts. I don't care much about that part, what I cared most about was the fact that for people who couldn't trust easily they sure trusted each other easily enough. I wish the things hadn't happened so quickly.

And you know, I am all for rules, I like them. There's a reason for propriety and rules. And I was embarrassed at how things happened in her second night in the Duke's company. I mean, private things in my opinion should be kept private from all eyes but then ones you're sharing it with. Anyway, any other book everything that happened here would have been over the top scandalous, but since her situation was indeed desperate I think we can pardon that. This book starts with a dark romance vibe but I thought it to be quite cheesy and romantic without much darkness. The only thing the hero really wanted was to love and be loved in return.

But I think he should have married the heroine much sooner.

Really enjoyed this story

I loved Redmond. He was such a great hero. But he did have a couple of moments where I wanted to slap him so that is why it is four stars. I just was stunned by a decision he made in the last section of the story. I dont want to spoil it but he does something very stupid but he quickly redeems himself.

The Villian her Stepfather was vile. He refuses to give up his prize. So the hunt is on when Harriet runs away. She stumbles into Red's house and heart right away. He is haunted by his past marriage where his wife had loved his brother. It was quite tragic. He hides himself away in his house in his sorrow and misery.

I normally don't like books with paranormal themes but I loved that the brother and the wife were apparitions and were working to help Redmond move past the night of their deaths and find happiness.

One thing I didn't really understand is that she is running away from a lecherous man but jumps into bed with Redmond right away. It didn't quite jive with me but I still loved the book.

One of the best scenes is a duel between the heroine and hero the night they met. It was awesome. I loved it.

The only unfaithfulness in this book is between the side characters in the prologue, so it is safe for me. I did feel the hero's pain when he finds them together. The great part for me was that I also felt the cheating couples pain as well. It was very well done.

I love the cover too. It made me but it!! 💓

Thank you for recommendation Edwina " I LoveBooks" "Deb" Allen! I devoured this book and loved every word. This was a gothic romance with a pinch of Beauty and the Beast & it was so easy to get lost in. Harriet is running from her evil stepfather and after her carriage crashes has no choice but to find refuge at the estate of the Devil of Dover. Harriet is afraid that she may be just trading one evil for another.

Redmond has been living a life of seclusion after the betrayal and deaths of both his new wife & brother when Harriet stumbles on to his land. Harriet soon finds his bark is bigger than his bite and the rumors are just rumors. With her stepfather obsession to find her and glimpse in to "another world" Harriet and Red try to decide how best to keep her safe, even if that isn't with Redmond.

The only reason this was not a 5 star was that I felt the build between the MCs was a little to quick and I would have liked a slower burn. The ending was also a little rushed but in only 252 pages Lauren Smith created a enchanting story.

Gothic Christmas Romance at its Best!! Great Storytelling. Devil at the Gates moves quickly. Its a page turner I could not put It down. I read through most of the night.

Redmond Barrington, Duke of Frostmore. Was betrayed by his brother Thomas and his wife Millicent. He caught them having an affair. Millicent is accidently killed and a few days later Thomas commits suicide. Although they cheated and deceived Redmond they did love him and wanted to fix the hurt they had brought upon him. Redmond didn't know that Millicent and Thomas were deeply in love before they even met. Her family forced the marriage because Redmond was the Duke and his brother the 2nd son. This is a heartbreaking tragedy!

Harriet Russell's mother Emmeline is dying. She warns her daughter to run, escape from her stepfather George Halifax who intends on raping and having her for himself once her mother is dead. George is her Guardian until she turns 20 in a few weeks. With the help of some of the household staff Harriet escapes.

On the run her carriage turns over and her driver is hurt. She must find help. As she is riding one of the horse she see a Manor house. Harriet gets help there. She also, meets the Devil Duke!!

Redmond and Harriet start becoming very close with the help of two loving ghost that just want to see Redmond get the happiness he so deserves. Harriet is 19 the same age as Millicent when she married Redmond. She will not need a guardian when she turns 20 but that is weeks away. Her step father will never give up trying to capture her and hunting her. But George is facing two ghost who are helping to protect her.

This was a really good story!! Once you start reading you might not be able to stop until you finish!!

Classic, gothic romance, this is a timeless story one that will get you heart pounding in anticipation in so many ways.

It’s got romance , tension and fear.
The characters are wonderful. The Devil comes in many forms it seems and it’s not always the one you expected.
The Duke . The Stepfather .The dog?

It’s such a great story , I’m not a ghost person to be honest, but these ghosts were done really well, I’m shocked at myself for finding them so enjoyable and I new if anyone could change my thinking it would be Lauren.

A wonderful and enjoyable experience for anyone who loves a good ghostly romance .

I love Lauren Smiths writing. This was shorter than expected and the romance moves quickly but I expect that from a novella. Had all the gothic vibes with a little Paranormal action thrown in for ambience.

Devil at the Gates was my first Lauren Smith read, and it certainly left me curious for more. It’s a story that hooked me right away, one I had to devour in a single sitting, and I’ll certainly be diving into more of the author’s work.

With plenty packed into it, Devil at the Gate is a story that hooks in multiple ways. You quickly fall for the characters and are desperate to see how their story plays out. Although the ending felt a bit rushed, it was not enough to lessen my enjoyment of this story that kept me gripped throughout.

Without a doubt, this was a great introduction to Laruen Smith, and I cannot wait to see what else the author has to offer.

The author never disappoints & once again this is an engrossing, enthralling read. Well developed characters – she doesn’t do two dimensional ever. A story that captured my interest from page one & didn’t let go until the final word

Harriet Russell e Redmond Barrington, the Duke of Frostmore
Happy reading, and until the next reading..

Everything happened too fast, too unbelievable, too OTT

Last strike for me was when

Even with the cutesy happy ending, this felt like an unintentional case of "Wham, bam. Thank you, ma'am." And I didn't see how this book was "Gothic," either. (Just slapping in a couple of ghosts doesn't count.) Luckily it was short and not the most painful read.

Harriet is on the run from her horrible stepfather when the carriage she is riding in becomes damaged. With the driver injured, she must travel to the nearest estate for help. The only problem is the owner of that estate is known as Devil of Dover. Does she dare to go there?

Redmond is devastated by the loss of his wife and brother and just wants to be left alone. This has left him with quite a reputation. When Harriet shows up on his door step, his first thoughts are to do something to get her to run away. He didn't count on her challenging him to a duel and winning!

Being injured and without a driver, Harriet end up staying at Redmond's estate. She sees the part of that he doesn't show the outside world. Could she be happy her or will her stepfather catch up with her?

I really enjoyed Harriet and Redmond's story! Paranormal is not normally my thing, but a few short visits form some ghosts are ok and I really enjoyed this in this story. This was a very enjoyable quick read!

Harriet Russell’s mother about to die and she knows she has to escape her step-fathers clutches. On the carriage ride to Dover her coach overturns in the thunderstorm and she and the coachman are injured. She seeks help from Redmond Barrington, the Duke of Frostmore or Devil Duke as he’s known by the locals. Redmond immediately makes her aware of her precarious situation in his home. We find a grieving widow with a wounded heart and a damsel in distress needing rescued. I love this novella and its emotional romance story. I voluntarily wrote a review for this excellent story.

A bit disappointing.

A HEA with every historical cliche crammed together. Determined to finish this, I did and sighed sadly. A perfect ending, of course, (remember cliche?) but I have surely read much better from this author.

MY RATING GUIDE: 3.5 Overall. DEVIL AT THE GATES didn’t entirely grab me in the beginning but managed to pull me in by the end, as I began caring what happened to the characters, wanting their HEA. Overall, I found DEVIL AT THE GATES an enjoyable Gothic novel - mysterious but not too dark or angst-filled. I might read it again sometime. (There is the slight presence of non-threatening/protective “ghosts”).

1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= This was okay/fairly good; 3.5= I ENJOYED THIS; 4= I liked it a lot; 5= I Loved this; it was great! (I SELDOM give 5 Stars).

Harriet Russell flees her home in the middle of the night on the eve her mother lay dying. Harriet’s stepfather has repeatedly threatened to harm Harriet so when her mother, on her deathbed, begs Harriet to run, Harriet does so. Unfortunately the weather is bad, the roads are terrible and her carriage overturns. The only property in sight, a remote 300yr old rambling estate, belongs to a much feared man, Remond, the Duke of Frostmore, who supposedly murdered his wife and brother 7yrs earlier.

Comments ~
1) DEVIL AT THE GATES is a Standalone Gothic Historical romance, a genre I enjoy every now and then, stemming from my early teen reading of Victoria Holt, Mary Stewart and their contemporaries. Lauren Smith is a new-to-me author.
2) I thought DATG began rather weakly but the more I continued reading, the more I was drawn into their story. This is a fairly quick reading novella (10 chapters & an epilogue) but by the end I wanted all the characters to get their HEAs. I thought the story picked up momentum and finished well. - thus rounding DATG up from the original 3 to nearly 4 Stars (3.5).
3) I recommend it to readers who enjoy:
> Quick reading Historical Gothic novels which aren’t too dark or angst-filled.
> 2nd Chance romances for Seasoned, Misunderstood Heroes.
> Danger-Proximity-Rescue trope romances.
> Historical/Gothic novels (and aren’t too picky regarding correct “period” speech).
> a bit of Steam with their romances.
> a touch of paranormal with the hint of cooperative “ghosts” (barely there, and not dark).

READER CAUTIONS ~ Not recommended to those who prefer Clean fiction or YA readers.
PROFANITY - Yes. Occasional strong language is used.
VIOLENCE - Yes. This is a Gothic mystery novel with hints of murder (past and present), sexual assault threats but overall hopeful rather than dark or graphic.
SEXUAL SITUATIONS - Yes. The intimacy between the main characters is fairly Steamy (3 scenes+). Not recommended for YA readers.

"Devil at the Gates" by Lauren Smith is an extremely quickly moving tale. This is an easy read for a quick Christmas kick with some spooky twist, although you don't know it is near Christmas until a good way through the book.

This is definitely a story of instant attraction/love. Both of the mains have been through some harrowing events so it makes sense they would uniquely bond through their shared trauma. Is this super believable? No. Is it entertaining? Yes. If you don't like insta-love, this title isn't for you. And if you don't like things that go bump in the night, this also isn't for you. After all, this IS a tale with gothic themes.

I'd have liked this book to be just a little bit longer so we could experience more relationship-building between Red and Harriet. They both deserved true love after what each of them had been through, and I would have adored to see more of their emotional growth.

Ghosts give me the creeps. However, this isn't as spooky as another book by Smith titled "The Shadows of Stormclyffe Hall" (contemporary gothic romance.) It was neat to not know if the ghosts were evil or not basically until the end of the title. They kept me on my toes!

As for steam, Smith writes a variety of levels of steam across her wide selection of books. In this title, readers will enjoy shorter length scenes without explicit language. The steam is passionate!

This book originally started out in a box set. But the author has now released it on its own.
A short story set in the late 1700’s.

The Duke of Frostmore, also known as the Dark Duke, or the Devil of Dover.
Redmond “Red” Barrington wasn’t always like the title he was now known as. He’d been a better man, but after finding his new wife in bed with his brother, Redmond had stepped off the cliff and into hell. His heart black and cold, vowing never to love again.....

Harriet needed to escape, her stepfather had plans for her, and they weren’t very nice ones. Escaping without her beloved mother was hard, but she was dying and Harriet couldn’t risk her. So with the aid of the housekeeper and her coachman she makes a bid for freedom.....

Harriet goes to the Dark Duke’s home to ask for his aid, her carriage has over overturned and the driver is badly injured. it’s not a good idea, in fact it’s a dangerous idea, but what choice has Harriet got? She won’t go home, not whilst that man is there. She needs the Dark Duke’s help.

An agreement is made, she will stay until she is well, and her coachman’s leg has mended. Then he will help her reconnect with her mother’s family.

Yes it has the predictable ending, and the journey getting there was a little rough. Red didn’t want anyone in his home or heart, but Harriet managed both. She stirs feelings in him that he thought were long dead. But he won’t love again, that hurt the last time he did it.
Once Harriet got to know Red a little better, saw past the bluster and anger, saw the man still hurting after seven lonely years. But she won’t trust him, he may give her back to her stepfather, or worse, take her himself. She must remain on guard at all times.

It’s a nice little read. I know it was intended as a Christmas read, but I didn’t get it then 😉but it’s nice my written, and can be read in a few hours.

I was completely enthralled! I listened to the entire story in one sitting. Lauren Smith has always been able to hold my attention, but the addition of the dark, gothic vibes completely stole my heart. This story reminds me of the start of her League of Rogues, with many parallel elements to Godric/Emily’s relationship. I ate it up! The somewhat captive vibes gives that element of danger to the relationship while at the core it is a bond between two lost and damaged souls. The bitter angst of Red’s past is heartbreaking when all he longs for is to be loved and to care for someone. Combine that with Harriet’s tragic future prospects and your heart will melt for these two to find a way!
And I must say, the narration performed by Nathaniel Priestley was brilliant. I normally prefer a dual-narration for it can be hard to grasp the right tone for the opposite sex, but in this instance I barely noticed that there wasn’t two voices. It was easy to get lost in his voice.
Overall, this is a must read story with perfect gothic vibes while embracing all the romance traits you love.

This is a good read. It has gothic vibes to it, while still managing to have the holiday feels. The main characters are well developed and intriguing. I found both Harriet and Redmond relatable; they drew me in from the start and had me pulling for them. Red is a scared characters – he was hurt by those he loved and now he doesn’t want nor trusts love.

The secondry characters added spice and intrigue to the story. The estate is a character as much as setting and it added greatly to the feel of the story. Red and Harriet have sparks right from the start and it was fun seeing them on page.

There were actions that were taken by some characters that I didn’t understand and I found a little confusing. It made the character feel evil or with evil intents when in the end they are not.

This was among my favorite stories in a collection called A Lady's Christmas Rake. It was mostly well written and a good amount of romantic tension. I did find the beginning scene where he practically forces himself on her and then is surprised that she's scared of him a bit jarring. He did quickly redeem himself.

I also had a huge issue with the hero's decision made for her safety. It was a ludicrous decision and only made to direct the plot in a particular direction (which I knew it was headed towards but had hoped the avenue would have been more believable). Despite that, it's still one of my favorites.

I absolutely loved it!!! You can never go wrong in reading a book by Lauren Smith no matter what genre it is. I absolutely loved this Lauren smith just has a way with her words and how she tells a story I am always invested to see what will happen next and how she puts everything together. I loved Harriet and Red they both suffered and man the betrayal Red went through was harsh!! Harriet came right on time into his life but she was feisty! And didn’t back down. I like that! A quick read to distract your mind.

A quick Gothic historical romance with ghosts.

Mmc is a brooding reclusive duke who after catching his brother and wife cheating lives by himself. They've both died. Fmc is running from her step-dad who has nefarious plans for her. Her carriage breaks down on a stormy night on his property.

I love their first meeting. He tries very hard to be lecherous and they have a fencing match. She's an expert and beats him. Although its a quick book, I love the way they learned to trust each other and healed from their traumas.

This was okay. I didn't feel the chemistry between the two main characters. Separately, they are good characters with depth and tragic back story, but I felt the lack of nuance more wod counts would have provided. It suffered the novella curse for me. Also, the supernatural elements felt strange for a gothic novel, and I think it may be that the gothic setting was never fully established for me enough in the beginning.

It's a good read, though, for a historical romance if you are looking for something for the spooky season, but not super dark or heavy.

A cute short Gothic Romance. I enjoyed this book. Yes, it was short, and things happened really fast, without a complicated plot, but the love story between Redmond and Harriet was beautiful. If you are looking for a serious read with plot twists and a deeper story, then this book is not for you, but if you want a book that you can read through quickly and enjoy lighthearted then this is a good read.
