Hiroshima is where the first atomic bomb was dropped. Now readers will learn the reasons why and what it's meant for the world ever since.
By August 1945, World War II was over in Europe, but the fighting continued between American forces and the Japanese, who were losing but determined to fight till the bitter end. And so it fell to a new president--Harry S. Truman--to make the fateful decision to drop two atomic bombs--one on Hiroshima and one on Nagasaki--and bring the war to rapid close. Now, even seventy years later, can anyone know if this was the right choice? In a thoughtful account of these history-changing events, Jess Brallier explains the leadup to the bombing, what the terrible results of it were, and how the threat of atomic war has colored world events since.
Wow, nuclear war is horrible. The pictures in the back were terrible to look at; just flat waste where a big city used to be.
However, I do think it's kind of beautiful how even after something so horrible, there is still chance for reconciliation and friendship. The USA helped Japan stand back up again, and we went from enemies to allies and friends. Japan went from an intensely closed-off country to a really cool place that people all over the world visit! (and who would've known the word weeb would become such a thing since then... lol)
How horrific !! This is an important book to read to gain an understanding of the terror of nuclear war. It explains well the structure of World War 2 and it’s alliances. It also details the making of the atomic bombs and the terrible consequences of using them. In our present world conflicts this book should hit hard at our hearts for what has happened in the past as well as how grim our future could be.
This is a good book to get the main points of what happened to then do a deeper dive with other books. I love this line of Children's nonfiction it is a great way to start learning about a new topic.
I have a greater appreciation of the importance of peace, the great cost paid sometimes to keep it.
Great overview of the making of the atom bomb as well as the bombing itself. Also details some of the aftermath and lasting effects. Note - this does have gruesome descriptions of burns, death, and body mutilations from the bomb itself. May want to preview and be ready for discussion should young readers pick this one up.
The book gave a closer look at the details of the bombings and the aftermath. I was under the impression that Hiroshima and Nagasaki are still inhabitable because of the effects of the bombings. Glad to see the cities thriving by the end of the book
Baca tentang bom atom pertama dunia ini, pasti keinget kisah Einstein yang di buku-buku biografinya menyebutkan bahwa ia menyesal sudah menyetujui proyek pembuatan bom atom yang disebut Manhattan Project.
War is a time when decisions are made. Some are warranted and others we may regret. Reading this book left me feeling a sense of embarrassment and horror over the actions taken and the destruction of innocent people.
Super sobering read but factual and great for conversation about war and decisions made. We were especially moved by the survivor stories and would like to dig more into those one day. Reading series with Lainey.
It was a nice book. When the bomb hit it killed 80,000 people in a instant. It was a loss for everyone. Everyone cried day and night. The first bomb that hit Hiroshima was a atomic bomb. Millions of paper cranes hang st the children's Peace Monument in memory of young victims of the bombing.
The use of the atomic bomb was a major turning point in history, a worthy subject, well addressed in this book. Very informative, while written with fairness, compassion, and hope for peace.
