FAMILY.They create us and shape us, love us and traumatize us. We cling to them by a primal instinct to survive, but our ties to them make our family more capable of destroying us than anyone else. We're bound to them for life by our very flesh and blood.BLOOD RELATIONS is a collection of eight short stories and two novelettes from Kristopher Triana. Every story revolves around family, be it fathers hunting their sons, murder duo siblings, parental impostors, or children facing the end of the world. Ranging from conventional to extreme horror, this collection crafts a terrifying family album for readers, one with pages smudged by bloody thumbprints.THICKER THAN WATERMY NAME IS CHADWOMBKINNANA'S SECRETDOG YEARSTHE SOLUTIONSKYSCRAPERJAILBAIT FRANKENSTEINWE ALL SCREAM

His fiction has appeared in countless magazines and anthologies and has been translated into multiple languages, drawing praise from Publisher's Weekly, Cemetery Dance, Rue Morgue, Scream, The Ginger Nuts of Horror and others.
Full Brutal won the Splatterpunk Award for Best Horror Novel of 2019, and Triana won the award again in 2022 for The Night Stockers, which he cowrote with Ryan Harding.
This collection is so freakishly good. The first two knocked me right on my ass; back-to-back attention grabbers. I loved the apocalyptic tales (Dog years & Skyscraper), the gross-outs (Womb & The Solution), the social commentary on a few of these (like Jailbait Frankenstein), the characters, and Triana's consistently imaginative and masterful storytelling. Favorites: THICKER THAN WATER MY NAME IS CHAD KIN DOG YEARS SKYSCRAPER WE ALL SCREAM Forever recommending his books to readers who enjoy no-bullshit horror and compelling stories.
A solid compilation of horror stories, each with a different theme while having family at its core. From chilling to cosmic to the complications of relationships, these stories each have their own personal allure. A fine melange.
I will write a review after I get done pressure washing my mind. It’s pretty filthy right now.
Here we go...
Do you like to be uncomfortable? Not so much your body, but in your mind? Do you like it when you are physically squirming as you read? Are you ever nervous that someone is going to ask you what the book you’re reading is about? Imagine describing in detail the violence and sexual depravity in that book to your mom and have her ask if she could read it when your done? That’s the squirming I’m talking about. I am not going to go over each story because if you are looking at a splatterpunk book then you want to be grossed out and surprised. You will not be disappointed and I guarantee you will be surprised. These stories are very creative with the twists and how disturbing some of them are. Kristopher Triana writes with an easy style that submerges you into the story immediately. He is intelligent and he is eloquent. I have a feeling that he was the kid in school that frustrated his teachers because he was “not living up to his potential.” Yeah, maybe, but I can tell you he will surpass all your expectations.
Kristopher Triana is quickly becoming a new favorite of mine. This is an excellent collection with a little something for all those who love extreme horror.
Well, Triana does it again! Ever single time I read one of his books I’m blown away by his talent. He can write in so many different genres and sub genres: horror, crime fiction, dark fiction and extreme horror, splatter punk. Not many writers can do this and do it so damn well.
In BLOOD RELATIONS all the stories revolve around family but not your ordinary type of family. These families are seriously messed up.
A few standouts for me were:
- THICKER THAN WATER- the first story and it really packed a punch
- WOMB- an excellent, gory and twisted tale
- KIN- that ending!! Omg!
- DOG- so good but heartbreaking
Usually when I read a collection there’s a few stories I don’t care for but not this one. I enjoyed the hell out of this book and I highly recommend it for seasoned horror readers.
This is an amazing collection of stories, and there's definitely something in here for every kind of horror lover. I think that I'm just used to the extreme side of this author. I started reading this book expecting one thing, and now I'm sitting here practically speechless, trying to get the words for the first review. I feel like I've been hit by a bus. For me, the stand out story here is MY NAME IS CHAD. The writing pulled me in so deeply that I was practically sitting next to the main character. My stomach got upset, my hands started to shake, and I didn't realize I was crying till I wondered why I couldn't see. I still haven't settled down from my initial reading - if that isn't the sign of some outstanding writing, then I don't know what to tell ya! I'll update this as soon as the story by story review is finished. For now though, I have to find out if I really have read a version of one of these stories stories before. I won't be able to sleep tonight until I figure this out!
My favorite story was "We All Scream", but this book is not my favorite from Kristopher Triana, the writing is amazing but I'm not a fan of fantastic and monsters stories, most stories are pretty soft too, don't wait for anything very hardcore. But overall a great book
Sometimes you find an author by happenstance or merely because there are like-minded horror folks like yourself that bring their author and horror books game. Either way, Kristopher Triana has become one of my favorite indie horror authors. I bought Blood Relations because I thought it was his less popular work and then it spiraled out of control when a few bookstabuddies started reading this together.
Family; a chip off the old block, the apple not falling far from that tree or like father like son; all these idioms describe family connections but THIS book totally reinvents this dynamic in a most horrific way. When the family is meshed together by dark and disturbing situations, it leads to a fantastic and visceral read. I’m still reeling from this book!
My favorite stories were My Name is Chad and We All Scream! These stories were filled with so much suspense, unnerving situations, and just when you thought it couldn’t get weirder, bam! Triana throw us for a loop! Masterful and ominous in every story; there’s a little bit of everything in this collection and certainly not my last Triana read! If you are brave, strong-hearted, and not easily skeeved out, then this is the collection for you.
This is an interesting collection of stories themed around family and the bonds you share for better or worse. They were unique and unlike any stories I have read before, ranging from stories about creepy child perpetrators, paedophiles, cosmic horror, dystopian, plastic surgery gone too far and many more.
The stories are quite visceral and many are extreme horror. Some were flat out disgusting but they were creative so I'll give Triana that!
For me my personal favourite was MY NAME IS CHAD where a teenage guy finds out his childhood was a lie. I wanted more from this though and think it would have been great as a longer story.
For those who enjoy messed up horror stories about creepy families, this will be your jam.
Story collections are usually a mixed bag for me. It is not often that I love every story in the book. “Blood Relations” impressed me.
This collection of horror short stories, where each one is different than the one before it, was loads of fun. The only connection between each story is about a set of relatives. Kristopher Triana, the author, goes from dystopian story in “Dog Years” to serious extremes “womb”. “Blood Relations” has ten stories in total and they were all great. Usually, a collection always has one or two that do not work. This one is a real gem from start to finish.
This is my second Kristopher Triana book. Triana can not only write but also does horror well. I have so many more of his books that I need to read.
Beware...Triana writes extreme horror. If you are not a seasoned horror reader, pick his books up with caution.
A great collection of stories. Eclectic mix of style, but with the underlying theme of family throughout. My 2 favorite stories were Thicker Than Water and My Name Is Chad. A really good 1-2 punch to start off the collection. Other stand outs were Dog Years and Skyscraper.
Wow! Great collection of short stories. If I have a gripe about anything, it's that I think a few of these stories could have been full blown novels! Would love to delve deeper into some of these twisted families happenings.
Creepy stories about family, some more effective than others although none are bad. Some are gory while some rely on psychological thrills, various lengths with two of ten - Dog Years and The Solution - reprints. As the back says: eight short stories and two novelettes although, I’m going to be honest, they all felt like short stories while reading them.
My favorite of the bunch is My Name is Chad while my least favorite was Dog Years.
Four stars instead of five because of the unevenness for me. I should specify: I knew there was at least one dystopian story from the description on the back but I suspected I’d love most of the stories. And I did. The Solution gets super weird about women’s bodies, and I was like what is going on multiple times. Then again, Jailbait Frankenstein - while not quite as effectively creepy as My Name Is Chad - was the most cathartic. I think this has a whole lot of range, and I’m impressed with Triana’s ability to make it all work, even if I didn’t like some stories as much as the others. This, more than Night Stockers - co-written by Triana and Ryan Harding - makes me excited to read And the Devil Cried, the next book I’m reading and also a solo novel by Triana.
my husband got me this book and I am absolutely positive he did not read the back or skim reviews because he would have shat himself. no more than 3 stars bc I had to completely skip the frankenstein one bc what the fuck guys ….
BLOOD RELATIONS [2020] By Kristopher Triana My Review Four Stars****
This is a collection of eight short stories and two novelettes from the talented Triana. The underlying theme of all the tales in this book is family, and the author demonstrates his incredible range in creating stories that go from what could be termed traditional horror to tales of extreme horror. This collection is not my first time reading Triana. I became a fan when I opted to purchase and read “Gone to See the River Man.” I have subsequently read his novels “A Fine Evening in Hell” and “The Devil Cried.” These are different in concept with Triana showing his chops for the organized crime genre as well as supernatural horror. But all three were exceptional. In this case I averaged my ratings for the individual stories in this collection.
THICKER THAN WATER Terrific tale of terror about behind the masks of normalcy. Tricky clever beginning. Overall solid tale of nurturing what nature created. Loved it. Rated 5 Stars.
MY NAME IS CHAD This story has the impact of a hard blow to the solar plexus and a mad dash for the closest box of tissues to stem the tears because it depicts a scenario that could conceivably play out someday. Maybe it already has happened. Conceptually it is analogous to grinding your boot heel into the family crest, or hanging a cross upside down in a house of God. A belief system is shattered beyond repair. The most damaging impact would be the theft of a man's cherished memories growing up in a wholesome family with parents who loved him. The black void that is left lies in wait for a moment it is not conscientiously guarded. It becomes over time a siren song for all the negative emotions and calls to unspeakable acts a mind can imagine. Our protagonist in the story is left impotent to only waiting and keeping guard for himself and his true family. The impact of this tale of horror earns an easy 5 Stars.
WOMB "Flesh was sacred. Flesh was family". Triana takes this Mantra between his teeth and runs across the Finish Line into Hell with it. This story packs enough sick, twisted psychopathology to fill a textbook. Its violence, brutality and explicit sex are similarly stretched like a rubber band to the point of almost snapping. I gotta say it. The conception of this story was nothing short of brilliant. In the same vein, it was not what I would call an enjoyable read (more like horrifying and sickening in equal measures) but it demands and deserves 5 Stars.
KIN The crux of the story a bit too sci-fi wacky for me but the backdrop of southern hillbilly devotion and down-home justice hits a home run for perfect pitch. I especially enjoyed the 13 yr. old sister with the 22 snugly in her belt joining the kin to track down the psychotic mutt and unleash hellfire. This story hit a solid 4.5 stars, which is 1 point deducted for the central plot but .5 added back for the wicked smart kick ass ending.
NANA'S SECRET Note: Nana's Secret did not resonate with me. The first story in the collection I disliked. Things went sour for me when Nana resurfaced...and what followed. Rated 2 Stars**
DOG YEARS Post-Apocalyptic tales are typically just not the kind of storyline I enjoy. Dog Years was no exception. It was well written but emotionally a downer. The world's population is being rapidly eradicated by an atypical form of Progeria. Simply sad. Futuristic, sci-fi, and YES definitely horror. Rated 3 Stars
THE SOLUTION Triana's vivid imagination knows no bounds in this tale that answers the question "What does a teenage boy's limitless libido have in common with demonology and resurrecting the dead? I was shocked and horrified by the answer to this humorless riddle which is spun by the author like a seductive spider to the unwary fly. More than a tale of unbridled teenage lust and lurid sexual acrobatics of a talented and motivated nymphomaniac. Rated 4 Stars for its crazy creativity against the banal backdrop of teenage stud meets horny older woman with neither able to get enough.
SKYSCRAPER Note: Triana provides the world with a tsunami of water and turbulent skies, a dystopian view of the end of days resulting from man's overreaching. But also, science effecting other changes beyond...time itself fractures and all realities are superimposed on one another and visible. The end is positive in that the man can pass his little girl from his reality to a different reality wherein the flooding was less severe and the world was still viable. A moment in time when the realities aligned and a helping hand was extended to the girl and she had sufficient time to cross over. Rated 3.5 Stars
JAILBAIT FRANKENSTEIN Note: A pedophile somewhat in denial stalks a 15 year surgically created freak in pursuit of her perceived "innocence" to cure his anhedonia. His quest for relief and fulfilment leads him to a modern-day Frankenstein' laboratory. Our deviant will have considerable "skin in the game" before he never leaves this episode of Triana's Twilight Zone. Rating 3 Stars.
WE ALL SCREAM Triana's iteration of the dreaded ice cream truck from the mind of Stephen King and the Masters of Horror episode by Tom Holland. Spookily rendered on the page with all its demonic lure with horrible prices to pay. This story was my favorite even though it draws from Wishmaster and Monkey's Paw. 5-Stars, for keeping the kids and the lovable Tabby BoBo safe. I was not going to read another thing by Triana if harm came to BoBo. Just kidding? Nope.
The average came out to a respectable 4 Stars. I really did enjoy the collection overall. My favorite was WE ALL SCREAM, with THICKER THAN WATER a close second.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND SHORT STORY COLLECTION OF TERROR FROM TRIANA
This is one of those Collections where it's hard to write a review because there's so much to say about a lot of the stories that are included. All of the Short Stories in this novel somehow include family situations. Which I have to give mad respect for actually compiling because most people's first wounds came during childhood. There would be a lot of people who I would recommend not reading this Collection. But with that being said, if you're already a fan of Triana's work and you know what type of horror you're going to be experiencing and still wish to go ahead then this is one of the best Collections I've read in recent memory.
This is the first short story collection I have read by Kristopher Triana and I freaking loved every bit of it! The first story definitely grabbed my attention, causing me to gasp in shock by the second page. Triana really shows off his talent with this collection, covering a variety of genre's such as horror, supernatural horror, splatter punk, extreme horror and dark fiction. The theme of all these stories is family and some of these families are a real mixed bag. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of Triana's short stories.
This is the third book I've read by Kristopher Triana and the one thing I can say is that when I read his books he just has a way of writing that's awesome. He makes it easy to like the characters and get you in to the scene then he hits you with it full force and I'm always like holy shit. This book of stories I really enjoyed them because there's a little something for everyone. Highly entertaining look forward to reading more from him.
Another stellar title from the new master of horror! In this collection, Triana gives us tales of terror that revolve around family. But this horror is far from "family friendly". There's some extreme stuff in here, but it was the quieter stories that chilled me the most, my favorites being the moody "Thicker Than Water", the macabre "We All Scream", and the devastating "My Name is Chad". But there are no losers in the pile. From start to finish, this is a solid fistful of horror fiction.
I originally hadn't cared for short story collections but recently I've come across gems like this. I was looking for a more shocking experience after my last horror story and this one did not disappoint. It was outright disturbing and I loved it. Proceed at your own risk, but enjoy the ride.
Okay, Triana, you have my attention now! This book was what I needed. And I loved every single story in here. Great variety and simply perfect storytelling. My two favorites was CHAD and SCREAM. CHAD had me almost in tears. GREAT collection..!! 6 stars (if I could)
Full of gross and disturbing stories, this collection is like a sampler platter of the best and most vile aspect of Triana’s writing. Families are messed up, and here’s a spotlight on the worst they have to offer. I highly recommend this one.
I gotta say, I enjoyed nearly every story in this collection. But Nana’s Secret, Dog Years and We All Scream just blew me away. Can’t wait to read more from this author!
