Ms Fisher has written a great book in Now and Forever. The characters are interesting and creative. The story line moves along at a good pace, and is full enough of quirks to keep this reader wanting more. It seems to be a rather accurate accounting of how tragedies could unfold in the early history of our country. Imagine being away at war for years, only to return home to be told that your wife had died in childbirth and your infant son whom you'd never known adopted by strangers. With the spotty records of the early West, chances of finding him with his new family are iffy, at best. And if you do manage to find the family, can you tear a four year old away from the only family he's ever known? Could you willingly walk away from him? How Ms Fisher resolves this dilemma makes for a sweet read. I received this book along with others in a giveaway. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
Let me say that I enjoyed this book. Asher had been sent with his military unit to fight some distance from his home. He had been married a short time and he and his wife did not know that a baby had been conceived. Because there was no mail service he had been unable to stay in touch with his wife so he did not know about his child. Unfortunately, his wife died in childbirth. No one in the poor community felt able to take the baby in. The child was adopted by a woman of means in Sacramento. Five years later, Asher came home to find his wife gone, his farm rundown like no one was taking care of it, and all of his cattle gone. Asher was crushed when he went to the nearby town and learned of his wife's had died. Asher set out to find his child, a little girl. Read this book to see how he found his daughter .
This book also has short stories after the end of the book. I am enjoying them also. They make nice stories to read at night if I am not ready to go to sleep.

I was disappointed in this book. The story line could have been good, but the writing was less than stellar. The author choose to tell you what the characters were thinking or the reason for their actions by using their thoughts. This made it feel juvenile and didn't add anything to the story. The characters weren't well developed and it felt very choppy moving from one scene to another. There was a bonus story, however, I chose not to read it.
The first book in this series is great and well worth reading. It is well written and interesting. The others are not as good and get less interesting as you go. The last book has lots of typos, not sure how that one slipped through.
There was an interesting twist to this story. I did not know where the writer was going with the plot. It ended way to soon for my taste telling nothing of the couple and their new romance or how the child adapted to having his biological father in his life.
