The crisis of the present environment is to be understood only from our perceptions of what happened in the past. This book on environmental history is an attempt to give some historical information on the different facets of environment in India. It will Bridge the gap between environmental studies and history. About The Mahua Sarkar, is Professor of History, Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Her first monograph is entitled ‘Justice in a Gothic Edifice’ and her second edited volume is on ‘Women in History’. She is currently engaged in her researches on Environmental History, funded by the Welcome Trust, U.K., and Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi. Professor Sarkar has contributed a number of articles on environmental history and has edited a book ‘The Indian Vistas of Environment’, with professor Chittabrata Palit. She has been awarded the ‘Shiksha Rattan Puraskar’, by the India International Friendship Society for the year 2007.
