Author of Circus Mirandus, Tumble & Blue, and The Bootlace Magician .

Hi there! And thanks for reading!

Exciting news:

The Bootlace Magician is coming on October 1! I'm so, so, so happy about this story. It's the sequel to Circus Mirandus, and I feel like this one is for readers who finished that book and thought, "Okay, I'm ready for more of the circus, more of Micah learning about his talent, and lots more magic."

Of course I love all of my stories, but I think Bootlace is the book that best matches my tastes as a reader. I always want to see behind the scenes of a magical world. This story was my chance to give readers a backstage pass to the circus and let people discover the nooks and crannies that I couldn't show the first time around.

And Micah's coming into his own as a magician in this book. He's dealing with all sorts of new challenges, including the return of his long-lost grandmother. The Bird Woman is back, and she's more dangerous than ever.

I had a lot of fun with this one, and I hope you will, too! October 1 is right around the corner, and you can pre-order the book now just about everywhere.

Feel free to friend, follow, or message me! It may take a while, but I try to get back in touch with everyone. (And if I'm too slow to respond on Goodreads, you can also say hello on TWITTER or on INSTAGRAM.)

A worthy successor to "The Circus Mirandus." This magical, symmetrical sequel will most certainly satisfy all the fans who have been waiting to see more about Micah and the fantastic circus he became a part of at the end of the first book. Young Harry Potter fans will appreciate the variety of talents behind all of the principal magicians in the circus. They will also love having a front row seat as Micah discovers just what he can do with the knot-tying skills passed down to him by Grandpa Ephraim. This installment begins with the fish that Grandpa used to gain entry to the circus when he was a boy and it also ends with the same fish in a delightful and unexpected way. In between there is enough drama, intrigue and danger to keep the reader engaged. Cassie Beasley's powerful prose made the imagery leap off the page and into my imagination. I loved it! It would be a wonderful read aloud for classrooms, too!

A big thank you to Dial Books and Edelweiss for making this digital ARC available in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely loved this follow-up to Circus Mirandus as Micah settles into circus life and tries to learn more about how his magic of tying knots can be of any use to anyone. You learn more about his friends in the circus and are introduced to new characters (including the Strongwomen, who are awesome). While I could have been happy with the first book as a standalone, I loved this follow-up as it addressed many things left open-ended in the first, including more about his grandmother. I really love the magic system in this story, where magic is explained as when you have more of you than you can hold in and it comes out as something you put into the world, whether good or bad, something you can choose. I loved how Micah was able to make friends with Fish and Terp, and how his best friend did what she could to help him figure out his magic. We see more about how the members of Circus Mirandus have chosen to use their magic to put light into the world, as opposed to what his grandmother chose to do. Without revealing any spoilers, I loved how it ended and where the Idea ended up (where I was hoping!). This was a fabulous duology and while a third book could be added (and I would love it if it were) to see what happens with the Idea, I loved this satisfying ending.

As we learned in the first book, once you have visited Circus Mirandus, you usually can't return. That's the rule. Mostly. But some lucky people do get to return, and for us, the lucky ones, the cost of the ticket is reading the book...oh, yes, and believing in magic.

Micah Tuttle, 11, returned and has been traveling with the Circus Mirandus for several months now, and living with his guardian, the Lightbender. Basically happy, living a peaceful life with the circus, Micah is still painfully missing his deceased grandpa Ephraim, and his best friend Jenny Mendoza back in Peal, and hoping to discover just what magic his knots can do. Luckily, Jenny is coming to visit Circus Mirandus for a day, armed with a chart to help Micah figure that out.

Micah has also been spending a lot of time in the menagerie tent, visiting Fish in his aquarium and feeding him knots full of memories. Ephraim Tuttle had used Fish so long ago to enter Circus Mirandus. Mr. Head, the circus manager, has also decided that Micah is just the person to care for an abandoned baby Unicorn named Terpsichore. But Micah knows that Unicorns didn't abandon their babies, no matter what and he is puzzled by what could have happened to Terp and his mother.

But even after Micah figures out what may have happened to Terp, it's treated like a long shot. Yet, when a sudden severe storm hits during Jenny's visit and lightning strikes the menagerie tent, it begins to look like someone is trying to hurt or destroy Circus Mirandus. And after finding some notebooks that his grandmother, Victoria Starling, had borrowed before she was banished from the circus, Micah has a pretty good idea what is happening, but why? Victoria had been called the Bird Woman, flying with a flock of birds that she controlled with a wordless song - until one night she destroyed the birds during a show, angry that the Lightbender would not let her achieve what she so desperately craved.

But when Victoria Starling attacks the circus again, it looks as though it's days are numbered, and now she wants to get Micah to help her get what she has always craved so badly - fame and glory. But how does Fish figure into her grand scheme?

I loved reading Circus Mirandus and was so happy to learn there would be a sequel. And it is every bit a good as the first book. Cassie Beasley has once again created a magical world that just felt so familiar and welcoming. I sat and read until I was finished and then went through the book again, not wanting to once again say goodbye to these favorite characters, especially Micah.

Beasley really knows how to flesh out her characters, and even though they felt complete in the first book, they turn out to be even more complex here. Even Micah, just 11, has a true understanding and appreciation for the world he now lives in, but without a desire to abandon the world that Jenny lives in. And Jenny, the rational girl who needed to be convinced that magic existed, has become one of Micah's greatest champions and a great Circus Mirandus enthusiast. It was wonderful watching her excitement during her visit.

The Bootlace Magician does stand on its own, enough background information is provided, but why do that when you can have the joy of reading Circus Mirandus followed by this novel. And like that first novel, this is an extraordinary coming of age story about courage, faith, and the people who become our family, and a story that is not to be missed.

May the Circus Mirandus continue "to fight to keep enchantment alive" in the world for children. And remember, when you hear the drums and pipes, the circus has come to town and you know what to do.

This book is recommended for readers age 9+

I had fun returning to Circus Mirandus and experience the magic once more, it was as good as the first book
So in this book we return to Micah and his life as a resident of Circus Mirandus and he is trying to figure out his magic, when he discovers that his grandmother is planning to destroy it and takes over the magic in the world by taking "fish" the idea that will make her win
I liked how everything makes sense in this world and still have it's own magic .. so it was nice :) I wish if there was more of Jenny though

A very good ending

Loved this book! I liked the first one enough to read this, but I didn't think that it was such a great read that I would remember it in a few months.
However, this book changed that. This is storytelling at its best. One of this books that make you feel like magic is real

Thank you to Cassie Beasley for the ARC copy of the novel in exchange for a review.

Loved this books start to finish. Full review on my blog here: https://greenishbookshelf.com/2019/10...

A few highlights:
*Micah’s journey towards understanding his magic and finding his place in the circus is a compelling center to this story.
*One of the most intriguing characters in this novel is Fish.
*Overall, the characters in this novel are dynamic and intriguing; it’s especially fun to get to know many magicians better.
*The complexities and intricacies of magic in this novel are fascinating.
*My favorite part of this novel (or one of my favorites) is the classic fight between good and evil.

I loved this book. The characters are my friends, the action is exciting, and the ending is absolutely crazy. I better leave it at that and encourage you to finish this book for yourself. It’s an experience well worth having. Meanwhile, I will be at home listening for the sounds of drums and pipes to lead me to the magic.

I am WOWED by this book! I think it is fantastic, and that it has strong Miss Peregrine's vibes, which is one of my favorite series. I believe this sequel is even better than the book that came before it, since it really got an opportunity to dive into some themes I rarely see in middle-grade books, like concepts of morality. I am obsessed with discussions of morality in books, and this is no exception. I also just want to take a moment to applaud the author on how unique her magic system is. Each character has their own set of skills, and knot magic is so unique and cool to read about because of all the twists and stipulations the author factored into it. I will be eagerly anticipating any new books from Beasley, and I'd love to see her try out YA or adult books just to see where her creativity would take her.

I picked this up randomly at the library, not knowing beforehand that it was a sequel until after I had started reading. So knowing later that it was a sequel I'm pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it and how it felt complete as a novel by itself. Maybe I'll go back and read the first. Lol.

I was a little concerned at first. The prologue almost stopped me from reading the novel. It was so cheesy and I hated how all of these words with emphasis were capitalized, like "Moment" and "Idea". Honestly, it was a huge turnoff to me as a reader. I kept thinking that I might as well stop reading right there.

I'm actually grateful that I decided to read on a little further to see if it would be worth my time. The start of the novel wasn't as good as the rest, but it piqued my interest enough to keep going.

The rest of the book was great. It was interesting with fascinating characters and a great backdrop for the novel. It reminded me of The Night Circus a little in the style and descriptions of the actual circus. I enjoyed learning about Micah and exploring magic with him. I thought there were a lot of great ideas in the novel and the characters were unique and their magic was also singular. The plot was quick and moving through most of the novel too.

“The brightest light in the amphitheater was the peculiar cylinder, which the Inventor held in her lap. In its glow, Micah could make out the shadowy shape of the nearest benches and the pale color of the sandy floor, but not much else. Then came the drums” (81, emphasis added). The Bootlace Magician by Cassie Beasley is a fantasy fiction book that offers an emotional journey filled with self-discovery, hardships, and hope. The story revolves around the life of Micah Tuttle, a young boy born into a circus.

From the beginning, we learn that Micah is different from his fellow circus performers as he is not gifted with magic like they are. He feels like an outcast because he has no magical skill. He finds solace in his only companion, Fish (a fish), an Idea who cannot speak. An Idea is a thought, turned into a physical being by whatever live organism it perceives it should be. However, he keeps in touch with his friend from his home neighborhood, Jenny. The Lightbender, Micah's mentor and guardian who creates illusions, is rarely able to teach him magic. The Lightbender is constantly working to keep the circus hidden, as the circus only appears to people who truly believe in magic.

As the story progresses, we see Micah's struggles and losses as he tries to find his place in the world. His persistence pays off when he discovers his unique talent for making powerful magic knots. He even makes a friend with a lost unicorn, Terpsichore, who is very hard to tame. Only he can do it, by finding a lace of another being and tying it together with his own to communicate. However, his newfound talent makes him a target for jealousy and envy, and he has to face many challenges.

Despite the hardships, there is always somebody to help you during the tough times. The Lightbender is speaking to Micah about the risk of his grandmother, Victoria Starling, from finding the circus and taking Micah away. Micah doesn’t understand why the magicians won’t fight back against her, so the Lightbender says, "Some fight the darkness head-on. Others try to create so much light that it cannot take hold in the first place. We need both sorts of people in this world" (293). This quote is a testament to the book's theme of resilience and shows that everyone has unique strengths. Like the strongwomen, strongmen, and the fire magician Firesleight, it is up to us to use those strengths to overcome the challenges in our lives.

The author, Cassie Beasley, has beautifully crafted a story filled with relatable characters that will warm your heart. Their writing style is engaging and captivating, making it easy for readers to get lost in the world they created. I finished the book and was brought to tears because of the cliffhanger the author left me on. The book's plot is well-structured, and the pacing is perfect, keeping the readers engaged from start to finish. Although some novels skip over vital parts of the plotline, the author fits each event within its chapter by adding smooth transitions and creative chapter titles.

Overall, The Bootlace Magician is a captivating book that will take you on an emotional journey and leave you feeling hopeful. I rate this book a 5/5, and it is a perfect read for those looking for an inspiring and heartwarming story. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to experience the magic of a well-written young adult fiction novel. It is a story that reminds us that even in our darkest moments, when we feel like we are all alone, there is always a reason to keep going, always a way to find the knots that tie us to one another and to the world we share.

WOW! I didn’t think I could love a book more than I loved Circus Mirandus, but this book is a beautiful, magical story. My quotes are from an uncorrected text. “Sometimes difficult, painful things happen and there is no satisfying explanation for us.” Throughout this story we get to watch Micah a -magician in training- untangle his own potent magic. As an enemy from his past is threatening the Circus, his home. “When something big needed doing, you had to try and get ready for it. “ I loved the magicians, the animals, and the unicorn and how they all found a way through friendship and love to care for each other and the young magician. I will gladly recommend this to my friends and my students.

I loved everything about this book. It was wonderful revisiting Circus Mirandus and getting to see what Micah's life as a magician was like. The circus setting is fantastic, the characters are so varied and colorful; you learn to love each one of them as more and more about their personalities and magical abilities are revealed. The ending was perfect and sweet. This story is quite literally perfect.

I absolutely recommend this for the age group it's intended for but I also recommend it to anyone looking for a magical story to escape into for a while- regardless of your age. This book is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

I was instantly transported back to Circus Mirandus in this sequel. The world/circus? building is complete from the first book so the storyline could seamlessly continue in the Bootlace Magician. I love that despite the differences in time and place Micah can keep up with his best friend, Jenny Mendoza. The grief process is still very raw after losing Grandpa Ephraim but as Circus Mirandus becomes Micah's new family, it's easy to watch the healing that comes from them learning to be together and improve Micah's knot talents that become so much more.

I didn't like this one as much as I liked Circus Mirandus. I feel like it took awhile to flesh out the story, and then it got pretty violent and gory. It's not so much that I have a problem with gore, but my daughter (11) was turned off by the violence at the end. Maybe intended for a slightly older audience.

This book had so many great points: the lessons of friendship, loyalty, thoughfulness, decency, and altruism; the exciting plot; the beautiful fantasy. There are so many actions and conversations in this story and the one before that only adults (possibly only parents) can completely understand and relate to, so these are good books for all ages.
***BEST QUOTES***
--Some fight the darkness head on. Others try to create so much light that it cannot take hold in the first place. We need both sorts of people in this world.
--At some point, you have to take your own stand against the darkness in the world, whatever it might cost you.
--Putting something beautiful and good into the world always matters.

What a delightful, magical story. So many good takeaways for young readers about the meaning of family and what really constitutes magic. I love the main characters and I love the set up for the next book. I haven’t read Circus Mirandus, which may be why this was only three stars for me, but I enjoyed it and certainly recommend it.

Although this book is aimed at 9 to 12 yr olds, as a 30 yr I still enjoyed it. This is the second book in a series. I think there was enough background that you don't need to have read the first one, but it would probably be better if you did. I did not read the first one before I read this.
The main character is a 10yr old boy named Micah who is training to become a magician. It starts out that he is good at tying knots which eventually develops into a special power. He lives at a circus and you learn about all sorts of magicians and magical creatures. He has a crazy grandmother who wants revenge on the circus for banishing her in the previous book and the climax involves a battle between all the magicians and the grandma.
Common themes: family, loyalty, good things come to those who practice.

Fast read. Sequel to Circus Mirandus.
Beasley continues the story by sharing Micah's life after his grandfather's death. He now lives with the Lightbender and has become part of the circus. His relationship with Jenny has changed but is still strong and connected. The plot weaves the magicians together as Beasley reveals more about each of her characters throughout the book. Her circus world shows dark and light sides of magic - the beauty and the horror that plays out. Micah meets his grandmother and has to face one of the most difficult decisions in his life.
No spoilers but the battle between altruism and selfish desires plays out and culminates in the final battle with the dragon and the former Bird Woman.
Hope the final chapter leads to Jenny's book.

What a joy to read.

Some favorite quotes: The rivers of light were the connections between people, ties made not of string but of friendship. Of love. They burned strong and bright, and Micah thought it wouldn’t be right to touch them. They were so perfect on their own.

Because when evil asks us to bow before it, it is our job to stand taller.

I said it must be what’s inside of people like you. I said I thought magic must be the part of you that was too big to keep to yourself.

When a young magician realizes that his evil grandmother is targeting the circus he loves, he decides to fight back to keep his new home safe. The only problem is that his grandmother always manages to stay one step ahead of him and his magician friends. Author Cassie Beasley continues the story of Micah and his circus family in the slow-to-start but ultimately successful novel The Bootlace Magician.

Eleven-year-old Micah Tuttle has been living with the Lightbender at Circus Mirandus for months now, but he still feels out of place. The magicians and creatures in the circus couldn’t be kinder—everyone has gone out of their way to make him feel welcome—but Micah is having trouble understanding his magic. Sure, he can tie knots in any type of string, and these knots can hold memories. But how does that compare to the other magicians who can create fantastical illusions or breathe fire?

Sensing that Micah needs a job to keep him occupied, the Lightbender decides to give him the responsibility of the newest magical creature to join Circus Mirandus. Terpischore is a unicorn foal who has been left behind by her family. The magicians are worried about her, because as a general rule unicorns don’t abandon their own kind. For some reason, Terpischore wandered into Circus Mirandus. Now it’s Micah’s job to make sure she eats her meals and stays out of trouble.

Trouble, though, seems like it’s around the corner. Strange occurrences around the circus have everyone worried. Lightning strikes and mysterious attacks make everyone suspicious that an old enemy of the circus has returned. Victoria used to fly and perform amazing feats with birds, but her ambition got the better of her and Mr. Head, the manager of the circus, dismissed her. Now it seems like Victoria is back, and this time everyone is worried as much about Micah as anything else.

Micah wishes with every inch of himself that he weren’t related to Victoria, but he’s grateful that no one holds the family connection against him. As the weeks pass and the attacks become more severe, Micah realizes that some connections count more when they’re not tied by blood. He just wishes that the circus—and he—could be rid of Victoria once and for all.

Author Cassie Beasley takes her time to get the story moving in this second book in the Circus Mirandus duology. As a result, readers might feel like they’re treading water for a bit. The plot takes its time to move to the main point—the return of Victoria and her revenge on the circus—and Beasley tries to include several subplots that may, on occasion, compete for the readers’ affection.

The best elements of the first book are back, though, and target readers get to enjoy them in spades here. Micah’s friendship with best friend Jenny holds as strong as ever. All of the fun, quirky magicians of Circus Mirandus get more time in the spotlight. One of the core themes of the book—that family matters, whether it’s a family built by blood or choice—is as strong as ever.

Beasley doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities of current times, but she also offers readers the kind of hope that makes books in this genre sing. At one point, during an argument on how to handle Victoria, the Lightbender says to Micah, “Some fight the darkness head-on. … Others try to create so much light that it cannot take hold in the first place. We need both sorts of people in this world.”

Later in the book, the narration states, “Putting something beautiful and good into the world always mattered. Big or little, impressive or simple, magic was supposed to be about giving something of yourself to other people.”

Readers and parents looking for fun adventure books with age-appropriate content that also challenges its target audience will certainly enjoy this book. I recommend readers Bookmark The Bootlace Magician.

When we last met Micah, the grief of his grandfather's death was still fresh, and his future at the magical Circus Mirandus was wide open. Now "String Boy," as the other magicians at the circus call him, has progressed a bit in learning the kind of magic he can do, starting with tying knots that hold memories. There's more to knot tying than that, he learns. He may be able to make and unmake connections at a much deeper level of reality. Plus, he can do things with string and rope while barely touching them, or maybe even not touching them at all. It just seems like he won't figure out what to do with his magic on time to help save the circus, and everyone he cares about, and maybe the world, from the evil grandmother he has never met.

Micah's second adventure with the Circus Mirandus is even more loaded with new and wonderful magic than the first. He learns things about unicorns, dragons and one particular, very special fish that could make a huge difference. He witnesses devastating attacks by a powerful enemy. He finds out about the terrible powers, and limits, of some of the other folks at the circus. He uses a magic mailbox to communicate with his non-magical best friend back in the town of Peal. He struggles with powerful and, in some cases, destructive feelings and with a sense of responsibility for things far bigger than himself. And he learns to accept the love of a very different kind of family from the one he started with.

Cassie Beasley is the author of Tumble & Blue and Circus Mirandus, to which this book is the sequel. With this book, I've now read all three of them, and I hope she writes more because she's very, very good. Building a well-paced, emotionally compelling story within an immersive, original world of magic seems to be her thing; she's been nominated for two Mythopoeic Fantasy Awards and though neither of those nominations was for this book, I don't consider it a lesser achievement. I was moved within by it, cared for the people in it, enjoyed the fun they enjoyed, and felt my guts twisted by the ratcheting tension of such passages as the fancy-restaurant lunch Micah shares with his monstrous grandma – surounded by people going about their day oblivious to the danger in their midst, and unable to make a sound or a move against her. Until he does, after which all hell breaks loose and you just have to hang on by your fingertips until it's over. Kids deserve books like this; adults should feel privileged to get to read them, too.

There is a possibility my rating reflects my mood as much as the quality of this read, but not enough to encourage me to change it. I loved 'Circus Mirandus'. it was exactly what I wanted from a MG/Children's book. I had no idea there was a sequel - and I didn't think the original required one, an opinion I often have about this genre of books - but I decided to give it a go. Much to my dismay it lacked almost all of the magic and specialness of the first book. We have all the characters returning, plus some more (arguably entirely too many by either account), but the tale is bogged down by excessive, mundane, and directionless dialogue. Lots of it. I am decidedly anti-dialogue, mostly, since few authors of any genre can do it well enough so it doesn't pull you out of the larger narrative and/or feel like some sort of call-and-response blathering. So that surely didn't spur me to continue, but I did because the book wasn't so long and I thought the quest-aspect might take precedence eventually. Alas, it did not. Or not soon enough. And not, even when it did, in a way that was charming, magical, fantastical, or endearing. Just more of a fait accompli. Entirely too pat, and just a smidgen lacking in meaningful consequence. Maybe even a bit above the age-range in how it plays out. Maybe. Ultimately, just a bland adventure-ish tale that does a major disservice to the original. I, for one, hope Beasley leaves more-than-well-enough alone. The talent is there, as evidenced by 'CM', but like many authors, she overstayed her characters welcome with this follow-up.

The sequel to Circus Mirandus, this book chronicles the continuing adventures of Micah Tuttle as he tries to develop his knot-tying magic and works alongside the other magicians in the circus. However, a powerful outside force is threatening the circus that will challenge Micah to develop his magic far beyond what he thought possible.

This is one of those books that is just so goodhearted that you can't help but like it. I like that the author made most of the conflict external - an outside threatening force - rather than making Micah a tortured character who constantly makes wrong choices. There's one point in the book where Micah thinks about hiding something important from the Lightbender (his guardian) - which, in my experience, many authors use to propel forward tension and misunderstandings that could EASILY be cleared up in the plot - but he decides instead to be truthful and do what's right. That was a totally surprising but welcome change from the norm for me - not that I like perfect characters, but it can be frustrating to watch the whole conflict of a book be driven by the fact that a character refuses to tell another character something.

I rated the first installment of this series 5 stars, but then couldn't remember anything about it when I picked up the sequel. I suspect that this book might be the same (slightly forgettable), but we'll see. It was a really sweet, enjoyable book.

It was hard for me to navigate through the story, waiting for it to grab me. It really has a lot of potential. However, the plot is just dragging. At the same time, I feel like everything is happening all at once. Names are being thrown here and there, I haven't had the chance to form an image of the person and the setting yet.

I am trying to convince myself that one big reason is that I still haven't read the first book yet. But after more than ten chapters, my eyes could still not adapt with the writing. Every chapter makes me want to read the next one on the next day.

Still, it made me frustrated not being able to keep up with names, places, and what they are doing. Frustrated enough to search for the plot in the internet and just read the summary. Doing that made me realize the plot is not for me, after all. So I would recommend this to those who do vibe with these kind of stuff. I'm just personally disappointed because I was excited to read this. But in the end, not every idea can be sold properly to me.

It has humor. It has morals. I tried to like it, but I did not really get the magical feeling of being in a circus. I gave up nearing half of the book because this is thick book and it still has not given me anything up to the middle.

If I were to continue this, it would only be because someone has convinced me that it will be more exciting on the latter chapters.

Promises don't always work out the way you think they might or you wish they will especially when magic is involved. Micah is trying to figure out a way to make a Home for himself at Circus Mirandus. How does he fit in as the youngest and newest member? What is his special gift? His talent? His magical promise for the future?

Jenny is back to help Micah try to unravel the knot that makes his gift so unique; I love how Jenny has progressed as a character, and how Micah and Jenny grow in their friendship. We get to see more of the Circus and meet more of its people (hooray!) as well as learn more of its history. At times this slows down the pacing and the plot.

However, when evil magic comes to fight the Circus things get very bumpy and a bit messy and gory at times. (You have been warned.) The ending happens quickly. Too quickly? If you want to linger in this world, as I do, being dropped down with a jolt was a bit rough, especially after that last rough bit at the end.

Micah comes into his own with his magic and finds his answers and his place in a way that made me proud. It would have made his Grandpa proud as well. That is the highest praise I can offer.
