I decided to teach myself a little bit about photography. I ended up less interested in Photography and more interested in photo manipulation. This book by Katrin Eismann is one of my many unexpected purchases related to that.
At the time I bought this, I had little experience with Photoshop or Masking. I was starting a new hobby. This book was easy to follow with lots of nice glossy, color pictures. It's jam packed with tons of information and even has downloadable projects to work on. I've done quite a few creative projects of my own using what I've learned.
Masking and compositing is something that I still struggle with now in 2017. Back then we didn't have the tools that we have today, so I got this book to help and it was a lifesaver! I bought it in 2006 with the book on Restoration and Retouching.
I have been using Photoshop since Version 2, and I have come to realize that one of the most important skills — perhaps the most important — is to be able to isolate a subject from its background. In other words, making selctions and masks. If you can do this, you can put a stormy sky behind a lighthouse or put a faculty member against a dramatic, high-tech background instead of his blackboard. If you consider that many subjects have irregular outlines which often include wisps of hair, this can be a very difficult, time-consuming task indeed.
This book is devoted totally to the art of making Photoshop masks and selections. Virtually every page had some technique or trick which was useful to me, a good percentage of which were new to me. This is a valuable book which has made my masks and selections faster and more accurate.
For those interested in Masking and Compositing in Photoshop, this is a good place to start. Eismann offers detailed and solid instruction on the techniques to make seamless compositions.
