Billy Collins (Nova York, 1941) és avui el poeta més popular dels Estats Units, però no ha estat encara traduït al català. Set elefants drets sota la pluja són 35 poemes extrets del llibre Aimless Love (2013) que és una selecció de la pròpia obra feta per Collins.
Collins ha declarat que, en escriure cada poema, té «un lector al cap, algú que és allà amb mi a l’habitació i a qui estic parlant, i vull estar segur de no parlar massa de pressa o amb massa lleugeresa. Normalment miro de crear un to acollidor al començament del poema. Passar del títol als primers versos és com pujar a una canoa. Poden passar un grapat de coses».

William James Collins is an American poet who served as the Poet Laureate of the United States from 2001 to 2003. He was a Distinguished Professor at Lehman College of the City University of New York, retiring in 2016. Collins was recognized as a Literary Lion of the New York Public Library (1992) and selected as the New York State Poet for 2004 through 2006. In 2016, Collins was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. As of 2020, he is a teacher in the MFA program at Stony Brook Southampton.
