The introduction to a growing Inferno.
Like fire, it becomes alive. It consumes. It does not discriminate. Even when it ends, you still end up inhaling the smoke. The damage continues. Inevitable.
And embers. Embers are the most dangerous kinds. Potential energy that can so easily transform into kinetic energy.
What were you expecting when you entered into this inferno?
There are different kinds of story telling out there. The kind that weave tales, tries to imply that Murphy's law is in play, tries to weave the twists and turns and hold our attention and keep us guessing, cliffhangers ...
but sometimes we forget the other kind. The kind where it is just told from one perspective. Like in life, there are at least 3 parts to the story. What one goes through, what the other goes through, and the truth.
but alas, perspective is a person's reality, is it not?
did you come in as a reader who is just as depraved? one who feels: I needed more ... it should have been worse, I needed intricacies, more, more , more ...
makes me think of the viewers of a gladiator arena: awaiting more gore, more death, the worst of the worst, entertainment! ... because it's not you down there.
Hey, I'm not trying to offend anyone here. Just trying to open minds. Give you something to think about.
I feel that Yolanda Olson did a great job in telling the story from the perspective of the victims. No, we don't get into Luke's mind. It isn't that kind of story. It is not some omnipresence narration that tells us the ins and outs of everything that's going on and the master plan of it all.
Why does it matter if we get into Luke's mind or not? That isn't part of the tale here. The tale is what IS. What's HAPPENING. Those that are going through it. The view through their lens. Telephoto lens at that.
I grew up with at pretty psychotic father. I feel for these characters man. I truly do. I wish I didn't. It is not our job to understand the mind of Luke. This is about survival. You do not have the luxury of trying to "crack the code". Because if you forget to look both ways, it might be the last time you are ever able to look again.
shoot. there probably is no code. Luke is just Luke. Let's leave it as that.
In regards to fighting spirit. Let me tell you from experience... once you get beat down enough, mentally, physically, emotionally, all of it .. endlessly ... you teeter in the darkness. Standing on that fence where it only takes one step to just end it and find peace ... or step the other way and find some sort of reason for survival. Usual reasons are .. surviving for someone else.
I thought these guys found their reason. Never said they would succeed. Life aint fair, didn't we always hear that? and yes, it did go on and on. If you haven't experienced a hell that never ends... I think it's hard to understand. Sometimes these personal hells ... go on for years...go on for generations after generations. Isn't that where the term "break the cycle" hovers around? situations like these? even wars don't always end in a couple of years. Keep that in mind.
It made it more real to me. The way it was written. In your face. It is what it is. This is their story. This is what happened.
maybe I'm biased? my view on reality a little bit more distorted? but then again, I came into this series as an observer. And that's how I came out.
We each have our own opinions. That's cool. aint nothing against that.
but if you are going through the reader reviews before jumping in the fire, I hope you take my review into consideration.
