This is a nicely presented hardback book, with satisfying layout design, though one which is perhaps suited for readers who are absolutely new to Japanese culture - I was already familiar with much of the content, and would've preferred something with more depth. Also, much of the writing is very surface level, as though the writers simply googled a topic and re-phrased their findings with bland, unimaginative copy. That being said, elegant prose isn't the selling point of a book like this - it is one to be picked up for a few minutes, rather than one to capture the essence of Japanese life. The photos are (disappointingly) mainly stock imagery, and sometimes not even relevant to the accompanying text, however they are generally tasteful. It seems that this book was thrown together to ride the wave of interest in Japan due to the upcoming Olympics there, but regardless, this could definitely appeal to someone who is ignorant of what Japan has to offer. It could be much better, but it could be much worse.

I know this is a travel book so it may be a little silly that I read right through it but when I saw it on the shelf as I was perusing the library shelves for another book, I was so excited to read it! I have wanted to take a trip to Japan since college and after reading about all the wonderful things (nature, food, entertainment, more nature) this beautiful and rich culture and country has to offer… I’m going.

Skimmed through this to see what it was like. The book does contain some good introductory information about Japanese culture laid out in an easy to follow way and with some nice pictures. However I think the angle that they're presenting that information from ("be more like Japan") is cringey and even a bit harmful in certain contexts (like with the health stuff). If they didn't have that angle, this would be a decent book. It also needed one more edit, as I noticed a few errors, the most glaring being a map with Okayama in Tohoku, which I'm still laughing about.

Be More Japan is a big overview of the key tenets that define Japanese living. I spent the morning reading through this book, part of my celebration of the Japanese Literature Challenge that runs from January through March.

I took away lots of random ideas:

In early Japan, there was no distinction between green and blue.

Money is rarely passed from hand to hand in Japan.

Shoes are removed anywhere there are tatami mats and always in a person's home.

The Heian Era, from 794-1185, in Japan was a period characterized by nature, painting, calligraphy, poetry, and mythology. It was during this period that Genji and Pillowbook were written and read.

The Japanese calendar has 24 seasons, which are broken into microseasons.

Shintoism is the way of the gods, and it was Japan's first religion. Divinity is found in all of nature. There was no founder and no sacred scriptures. It is a philosophy of living life in harmony and cooperation with everything and everyone around you. It also emphasizes cleanliness, austerity, and wabi-sabi.

There are seven lucky gods. Benzaiten is the only female of the group and she is the god for creative people. Fukurokuju is the god of wisdom, luck, and happiness.

Vending machines are everywhere and offer many different products.

Soundscapes are an important concept in Japan. Some of the 100 top soundscapes include that of drift ice, cranes, and nightingale floors.

Well-known Japanese literature includes I Am a Cat (1905) by Soseki Natsume; In a Grove by Ryunosuke Akutagawa; Norwegian Wood; and Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto.

Puppetry in Japan is bunraku.

Traditional sweets that are sculpted works of edible art are wagashi.

Conversation during a tea ceremony is limited to talking about the beauty of the tea bowl, the flavor of the tea, and the garden view.

(Pretty random, I know.)

DK Eyewitness books always deliver as appetite-whetting introductions to their topics. In this case, to introduce one to the incredible history and culture that is Japan is a mighty task, but they manage to cover so many of the things important to Japanese living. If you’re looking for a quick, well-structured overview that inspires you to seek ‘more Japan,’ I highly recommend this read. I was introduced to just enough that it will help me home in on areas of my future travel plans, and I’m inspired to try more Japanese concepts at home including cuisine, philosophy, and art.

Great coffee table book for fans of Japan that know little to nothing about the country and culture. The layout of the book is one of the best features. The content is varied but brief although it should give you an idea on what may interest you next!

+++/- Excellent summary of many key aspects of Japan, for foreign tourists. (You won't find here many deep philosophical questions on the nature of Japanness or the role of historical culture in modern life.
+ Gives a simple introduction to key arts, crafts, lifestyle, and modern culture in Japan. You can get around with this stuff, and it's concise enough to read in one sitting. (For anything further than superficial notes, you're on your own, but this a strength of this book rather than a weakness. You do like pocket-sized travel guides, right?)
+ The maps are simple but clear, well-designed. The visuals overall are very good.

Chapter by chapter:
+ The general introduction to the cityscapes and landscapes of Japan is interesting.
++ The chapter on Japanese creeds, arts, and crafts is very dense but also very good. Wabi sabi good.
+/- Innovative Japan is perhaps the weakest part - this is the country of shinkansen bullet trains, the pockettopen long-short fountain pen, the walkman, the PlayStation, robots galore, the butt-washing toilet. Ok, some of these are actually in the book. The point is: Much of the world associates Japan with hi-tech, and has seen the amazing infrastructure at least around the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games (twice), but here the chapter on the topic is quite simply too short.
+/- Ditto Manga and Anime. In contrast, perhaps the local clothing extremes receive too much attention.
+++ Excellent chapter on entertainment: noh and kabuki theater, bunraku puppet theater, geisha performance, pro music and karaoke, aidoru idols and otaku gods (people), etc.
++ Very good chapter on food. Sushi, sashimi, ramen and other noodles, regional food, tea, sake, and whiskey, all get good Introductory attention, enough to want to go there and try them out.
+ The chapter on health, particularly the hot springs, trails and pilgrimages, and diet and exercise, is quite good.

This book introduces the lives of people living in Japan.
The content is useful for people visiting Japan for the first time.

Japan has long built its own culture on a small island, but because of its ability to incorporate foreign cultures and improve itself in its own way, traditional Japanese culture is no longer visible in people's lives.

However, if you go to Kyoto or Nara, you can see Japan's world heritage sites and architecture, Hokkaido's powder snow landscape, and Okinawa's Zanpa Beach, where you can see the beautiful cobalt blue beach.

In Japan, urban areas such as Tokyo and Osaka are relatively safe, so it is fun for women to walk alone. You can enjoy a delicious meal even if you go to an izakaya or ramen shop by yourself. The prices are also reasonable.

Just as many people in the U.S. don't go to church on Sundays, Japanese people don't go to temples or shrines unless there are special events.

Tourists must visit Meiji Shrine, Sensoji Temple, Ise Shrine, Kiyomizu Temple, and Itsukushima Shrine.

Japan has hot springs all over the country, so why not stay at a Japanese inn with natural hot springs, enjoy meals in your room, and the hospitality of the landlady?

Japanese Studio Ghibli and animation are very popular, but Japanese entertainment only considers domestic supply and demand and has no intention of exporting it overseas.

If you like Japanese entertainment, you can actually go meet them and interact with them.

I Have Become Japan

This was a truly wonderful book.

This travel guide exceeded all of my expectations.
With stunning photos and captivating writing, it transported me to the beautiful country of Japan and had me longing to experience it for myself.

This book isn't just a travel guide, though. It's also a cultural guide, providing insight into what makes Japan so unique and special.

I especially appreciated the book's attention to detail and its efforts to cover all aspects of Japanese life, from food and drink to art and architecture.

DK (Donkey Kong) has truly outdone themselves with this book. It's a must-have for anyone planning a trip to Japan or anyone who wants to learn more about this fascinating country.

I highly recommend this book - it's a true gem in the world of travel guides.
DK, Lonely Planet, and Moon have really upped their game lately. Fodor's is the one really being left in the dust lately.

4.8/5

Did what I was hoping it would do, but didn't rise above to become an unexpected pleasure or an absolute favourite. There was a fairly decent ratio of text to pictures (I'm not a big fan of the full-page photo with 1 sentence kind of book), and I learned about many aspects of Japan. This would have been a wonderful introduction to the topic, but I've been boning up on it for my upcoming trip, and by the time I'd finished the book, little was new to me. So nice for beginners, but Japanophiles will learn little extra.

(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s). I feel a lot of readers automatically render any book they enjoy 5, but I grade on a curve!

Japonci si dajú potrpieť na nádherných záhradách do ktorých zapadajú Bonsaie rôznych tvarov niečo z prírody si nosia domov a vytvárajú nádherné ikebani. Je to veľmi inšpiratívna krajina od ktorej sa máme čo učiť.

I read this in an evening, due to in the early stages of planning a holiday to Japan. The layout of the book, (like all DK Published titles) is beautiful.
The overview of Japan in these 200 or so pages is very concise. However, there are some aspects I did not enjoy. The chapters are too brief, there is far more to this complex country than the 200 pages can contain, further there was no inclusion of the Japanese language - and actually I don't think I even saw any of the language written down except in the Romanised version (none of the scripts were used).
It is however, a fantastic introduction to the country for someone who knows very little, and the inclusion of some of the lesser travelled areas by foreigners, was a definite plus.
Overall, a quick light read done in the usual DK Publishing style.

Great overview of life in Japan. It's a DK book, so the layout is beautiful and easy to follow. As someone learning Japanese, this book was very helpful in picking up some vocabulary and delving into Japan's culture. I would highly recommend it. The only criticism I have is the book encouraging people to partake in Shinto beliefs, believing them to be simply a spiritual experience. While I'm not opposed to learning about a culture's religion, as a Christian, I cannot encourage people to partake in a false religion of nature worship and gods that don't exist; Shinto isn't just a spiritual experience when there's implications for your soul's eternity. I recognize this isn't a Christian book, but the Shinto encouragement is the reason I can't give it a full 5 stars.

This book is a great surface-level introduction to Japanese culture. The writing was nice and the photos were appealing. The book gave a small amount of information on a large variety of cultural aspects, tidbits on a very broad subject. I'm not sure what I expected, but I found it hard to get through, like reading a Japan 101 textbook. I liked that the chapters were bite-sized so the less interesting subjects (for me personally) didn't last long. I was left wanting much more on the niches that grabbed me and I suppose that is the purpose of an introduction. Ultimately the book offered what it claims to and for that I give it 4 stars.

An undeniably high-quality edition, with such beautiful pictures and illustrations that I gave the book an extra star. But if I look only at the content, it is only a strong medium: detailed, full of information and therefore only briefly and superficially described, for about a paragraph or so.
I think that this book will be a great treasure for those who want to/are just starting to get acquainted with Japan, its culture and customs. It's great as a primer, those who have an affinity for it will most likely look deeper into the interesting things mentioned in the book.

A pretty comprehensive, well-organised and well-presented book with just the right balance of text and images, that showcases almost everything you should know about Japanese culture - from food to entertainment to crafts to local attractions and much more. It was enjoyable and interesting to read, and a great way to learn more about very specific aspects of Japan in particular (e.g. calligraphy, gaming, bonsai, sushi, etc). Definitely a book to pick up if you want a quick but detailed enough overview of Japan!

Bought prior to a planned first trip to Japan to provide some introductory information. Coffee table book good for occasional browsing, dipping in and finding something of interest. Because the subjects are all given very introductory level texts, this serves as a springing off point from which one might then choose to further research. Beautiful photos throughout (though like most DK books these tend to be of the Shutterstock and Alamy stock variety). All in all, pleasant and attractive, not earth-shaking.

Delightful intro to Japan for people who know a little or for people who know a fair amount but want more details in a concise and well organized format. Has the fun, easy to read layout and wealth of detailed journalistic color photos DK publishing is known for. Going to check this out again to plan for my eventual trip to Japan--has descriptions of appealing rural spots and other notable places not on the usual tourist menu.

This book might be most enjoyed by someone who knows little to nothing about Japan, or who wants a quick overview before traveling. Nothing new here for me me personally, but it was enjoyable enough for a quick light read. However, the amount of typos and even a few factual errors were disappointing for sure. Overall, it is a well laid out book, even though each topic is only touched upon in brief. The images included are nice. The writing style is casual and non-academic.

Cringey title aside, I found this to be a breezy, accessible introduction to Japanese geography, history, and culture. Somewhere between a coffee table book and a Lonely Planet travel guide, the cool visuals and simple prose make this a great book to flip through. It’s target audience is those with little to no familiarity with Japan; however, regardless of reader, this is sure to inspire affection for the land of the rising sun!

Be More Japan is a guide of Japanese culture and living. It gives you a taste of how this magnificent country is, its history, values, traditions, etc. I think is a guide that every person should read before traveling to Japan because it provides you a good picture of the country. The layer out is gorgeous and it is a very informative book.

3.5 stars. A beautiful, informative, & amusing book. The artwork & photography throughout give a good snapshot of what to expect in Japan. It’s full of great, useful up-to-date info on festivals, culture, history, religion, fashion, architecture, seasons, food, art, & what each region has to offer, all without being too wordy.
