"I'll let you go, but I'll never let you say goodbye."

Jay McClintock's relationship with Roland would have finally become easy if his past could have stayed in the past. But when the same man who ran his father off the road 17 years ago comes to collect on his debts, Jay finds himself confiding in Brad Garza, the one person who has been there through his entire career, the one person who has wracked up as much debt with the syndicate as he has, and the one person who can help him get free of his darkness. It's his only hope of moving on and finding his Happily Ever After.

Second Chance is the second book in the Fighting Chance series, following Jay McClintock's career from an unlikely intern to a star writer, Brad Garza's career from a humble and awkward farm boy to a musician for the ages, and the trials that brought them together and tore them apart. One part musical performances, one part RomCom, and ten parts sex, scandal, and mystery, If you love the banter of Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston, the dark twists of You by Caroline Kepnes, and the musical prowess of Pitch Perfect, you'll love Second Chance!

** Don't ask me about details. I skimmed through half of it. **

Second Chance by Anni Lee is the second book in the Fighting Chance series. And this was a mess.

First of all, there is no mention of the fact that this is the 2nd book of a duology, if you check Goodreads. I also had no idea. I thought it was a standalone mm romance novel. That was the reason I requested for an arc. Well, turned out it was a part of a series and I had to read the first book first to actually read this one. Not a hard work but I am annoyed.

In the first book - Fighting Chance, we had followed Jay and Roland. Jay and Roland had an amazing romance. It wasn't my favourite. But I enjoyed it.

Now, in this second book, hero changes. We go back in the past where Jay and Brad were together as a couple. We saw Brad in the first book. He played the role of Jay's best friend in that one. They still are bffs. But once upon a time, they were together. Now, we have to see their romance; how they had got together, when they had kissed for the first time, how they used to have sex...etc etc. Like, what the f*ck! I get that Jay has always been a mysterious character and we crave to learn more about him. But that's not how you give us that, Anni Lee.

It was to awkward, cringe and mostly annoying to read about Jay and Brad's romance when we already know they have broken up. Even Jay says at the first page of the book -"I have Roland now. I'll always love him. Brad is my past." Yet the author thought it was okay to give us a story of Jay and Brad's romance. It was extremely uncomfortable - to say the least.

I would have been still okay with the novel if it was eventful. But it was not. We learn nothing new. We see nothing but Jay and Brad fooling around and having sex. There was absolutely no point of this book. Why the hell we would need the stories of the main characters' past relationships??
I thought we would get more of Jay and Roland. Instead we got Jay's ex boyfriend and his tanctams...

Waste of time.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me the arc in exchange for my honest review. All the opinions are my own.

If you haven't followed this story, this is the second book in the series.

Jay wishes to have a normal relationship. He's decided that he wants Roland in his life for good. Of course, Jay faces demons of the past and has to deal with its burdens. All debts must be paid! He's worried about what can happen of the involvement with him.
Confiding in Brad on this roller coaster to deal with the mountain of issues with the mafia. What kind of person was Mark McClintock?

UGH! The stress of cliffhangers. Since Second Chance was an origin story, we will have to wait for book three.

Jay and Roland had a quirky meeting that lead to an intense attraction. But in a lot of ways they are not free to have the smooth relationship that they might have liked. Jay comes with a lot of baggage and it is dangerous to his life and to his future with Roland. This is another installment in the saga and I am looking forward to seeing where they land. It is not surprising that they find themselves dealing with some shady stuff. Their involvement has the music business as a back-drop which is notorious for its shenanigans. I am looking forward to reading some more about these two.

A 230 page digression, and ...

It’s spelled FAINT, not FEINT!
I wanted to give the first book a 3-star rating but then it ended with a cliffhanger, which irritated me. I was looking forward to the resolution of Jay and Roland’s story but had to wade through this overly-long digression... and whatever empathy I had for Jay went out the window as he made his “deliveries”...
I’m not “following” this author, so when book 3 comes out, I’ll have forgotten all about it and won’t be wasting my time on a seemingly never-resolved story

I'm gutted as I haven't read the first book in this series but wow what a read. It will have you hooked and you will not want to put it down so I suggest you grab a cuppa and get ready to get comfortable and get taken on a journey. Its a brilliant storyline and I really dont want to give anything away as it the second book so all I'm saying is grab it but be sure to read the first book first.

Interesting and Dark Story

Ok...I thought this was going to be a continuation of the first book but I guess it's mostly flash backs of Jay's origins. Which is OK...letting us get to know how he came to be...I loved the first book..it kept me entertained with the cliff hanger for this book but reading this one was OK. It took me a bit to finish but I see we got another cliff hanger...oh well.

After that cliff-hanger ending I loved finally getting the rest of the story that began in book one (Fighting Chance). These characters and their wonderfully well-written story were worth the wait.
