Marie de France

Marie de France ("Mary of France", around 1135-1200) was a poet evidently born in France and living in England during the late 12th century. Virtually nothing is known of her early life, though she wrote a form of continental French[citation needed:] that was copied by Anglo-Norman scribes. Therefore, most of the manuscripts of her work bear Anglo-Norman traits. She also translated some Latin literature and produced an influential version of Aesop's Fables.

As one of the very primitive romances, Milun embraces the glister of old, Middle-Agean adventures and virtues and love. Revolving around two lovers -a knight and a daughter of a baron- and the fortunes and misfortunes Marie De France appoints to them on their winding path, the story raises a joyous feeling to the reader —the ancient ambience of a good ending and happily-ever-afters; being an original of what has now become cliché.

This is one of Marie's happiest poems. The ending was one that actually made me feel joy for the characters instead of feeling sad for them. Very different from most of her poems.

Summary: This is a story about a man and a woman who fall in love and have a child born out of wedlock. They send their child away and communicate via a swan for 2o plus years. Eventually Milun find his son and they become one big happy family again.

What I thought of it: I dont really have much to say about this one. Only a few things. First, its sad that women have the mentality back then that no one would marry them if they are not a virgin. Second, its also sad that they have to communicate by swans. And letting those poor birds starve! Finally, I am glad they got their family back together without killing anyone!

Like Lanval, this was fine I guess. it feels cliche when really it was probably one of the originals, but it still feels corny sorry. The best part was the father-son reunion, and I like how kind the son was. Noticing general theme of generosity being used to indicate general goodness in these characters, maybe bc everyone was poor af in those days 💀

I loved it. It surprised me so much that it had a happy ending, especially because of the family issues that is had. This was definitely one of my favorites.
