Finding Her Dragons

Rate this book
She's lived in the darkness long enough.

Danica has lived her life in the shadows. Her family ran away from the dragon realm to keep her safe, but now she's all grown up and able to protect herself. One of only four females able to mate, she's both precious to their world and in danger from those who would use her for their own advantage.

Erik, Damon, Castien and Benjamin survive in the human world by running into burning buildings and feeding from the flames. It isn't perfect, but they had to leave their dying realm behind. They're content with their lives, until they see her. A woman who calls to not one, but all four of them.

The Dragon King will stop at nothing to ensure his bloodline is secure, even if it means kidnapping and forcing himself on Danica as well as the other remaining female dragons. Tired of living in the shadows, Danica steps into the light only to be faced with a terrible truth and dangerous consequences.

So I first should mention I recieved an audible copy of this from the author in exchange for an honest review.

As far as specific audio version comments, my husband and I listened to this together and he said it was a bit odd because this is a reverse harem complete with a sex scene and the narrator spoke in the same way a librarian would during children's hour. She made him think of someone who was reading to small children which didn't really fit with the content of the book. I didn't have the same impression but I felt like I should include it considering how many audiobooks I've shared with my spouse and this is the first time he'd gotten that feel from a narrator. My big issue with the narrations was the accents. It doesn't say in the texts that the dragon realms shared different accents or mention that they all came from different regions of the dragon realms. So why do four guys from the same place have such drastically different accents? Eric doesn't really have an accents, Ben and his Mom have a Brittish accent, Cassian has a southern drawl and Damien has a Scottish accent. The varied accents have no context within the story and seem to come out of nowhere.

As far as the story went, I'm a huge fan of Canavan's Goddess series, binged the whole series in pretty much one sitting and I like the reverse harem genre but this book doesn't display the same planning and attention to detail as is offered in her other series.

The four male leads aren't as well developed and distinctive as they should be, like sure we learn a few things about them to set them apart, but they underdeveloped enough that even Canavan herself mixes them up either that or they got screwed up in my head during the three hour audiobook. I don't have a text copy to go back and check but I'm fairly certain the switches are in the text, not my memory. I could have sworn it was Damien in the beginning of the book who definitely identifies Danika as a dragon because he was the record keepers son and had to learn her name. But later when Danika is kidnapped Damien became the tortured orphan and Cassian was the record keeper's son. In the initial scene with the lines Ben is the one who can see them but doesn't admit it, while Cassian whose like was plucked didn't know what actually happened. In the scene after Danika mates with Damien, Cassian is standing outside the door and tells her he is the one that saw the lines. I'm not sure if those are the only examples but those are two of the spots that I caught. Danika isn't even given equal interactions with the guys. Her physical interactions which take place in scenes and not summaries only occur with Ben and Damien. Time isn't taken to develop the relationships and interactions between Danika and her mates and I find the concept of real feelings hard to believe because of this. Most of their relationship is offered in summary rather than actual scenes.

Once Danika is kidnapped the timeline gets wonky. When she wakes up in the room she thinks Eric betrayed her still before the king begins her torture when we flip back to her she's rushing to get back to the men without any explanation about why her belief in them has changed. When she wakes up in Damien's bed she only tells him she wants all four of them but by the time she leaves the room everyone knows without anyone telling them and they act like she mated all of them when she's only technically mated one. She knows she wants them all, they don't know it yet except they behave like they do. At the beginning of that scene its said she's spent the time since she was rescued sleeping awash in nightmares, then a little while later she's planning a random prank on Damien for eating her pizza while she was in the shower except at no point during the previous scene did it mention her waking up and going to shower. Also it directly contradicts the character emotions in the previous scene. The guy who put her in his bed and didn't leave her side out of worry wouldn't be stealing her food until he was well past the worry stage. Her father mentions plans for the girl she found and 30 seconds later those plans already happened and they were considering following. I was so confused there I rewond and relistened twice.

A lot of the important parts were told in summary, not just the whole when did these characters spend enough time to have an emotional connection stuff, but Danika entire escape was basically a summarized flash back. That scene in particular was one I really felt should have been told in real time because it was a massive part of the climax of the book.

Then there was the capture scene where first nobody ever explains the weird darkness that caught her off guard and second she's spent the entire book up to this point talking about her amazing training but for the second time when faced with a conflict she just freezes and does nothing. First when the guys showed up at their house and she just decides no point in fighting because she won't escape without even attempting first. Second the real danger where she goes complete damsel in distress which is a huge pet peeve for me. I'm okay with a female character being outnumbered and overpowered if she starts out swinging and puts up a good fight. But in the kidnap scene she doesn't. She gives a weak ineffective struggle after she's already basically caught. I don't expect Danika to be super woman, I do expect that with the backstory provided that she put up a good fight before being caught. The kidnap scenes directly contradicts all the claims of training because it was ridiculously damsel. Later in the story she becomes strong again but also the girl in the cell doesn't seem like the same character as the girl in the alley.

Also there's like zero foreshadowing on the powers like shouldn't she know she's psychic instead of randomly seeing the future at the end? She's had a lot of these powers a long time she should know what they are and the reader should have known before just bam random power scenes that don't really fit with previously provided information. And the random mind reading from the guys was super weird as well. Plus there's a bunch of places where conflicts and misunderstandings resolved themselves without actually talking to each other. There were a couple other weird tidbits that just stuck in my head as well but aren't nearly as big a deal in the story as the ones above.

The planning and logic normally present in Canavan's works, just wasn't here in this story. It has potential, it was a good idea with the bare bones of interesting characters I'd like to know more about but it just didn't have the attention to detail and character development the book needed. The content editor really failed in this story.

The story was okay but I feel like it should have been so much better.

I liked the premise of firefighting dragons and little else. This story really could have done with about 300 more pages than it had, dedicated to actually developing the relationship between the main characters. The protagonist doesn’t actually have a conversation with her guys until the 7th chapter out of a total of 14, which leaves very little time for us to get attached, especially since the book is already very short.

The fact that they don’t have any actual interactions before then doesn’t stop the guys from speculating a great deal of things about her, though. They spend a great deal of time going over how perfect she is, about the possibility of her picking any or all of them and all in all working hard to satisfy that urge we all have to read about guys fawning over a girl they love – except that, again, they haven’t even talked to her, which makes all of their discussion extremely uncomfortable to read.

There’s more, of course. How come the house next door to Danica as well as her own apartment building burned down in a matter of weeks? Is there an arsonist around? And why, if the guys know she’s in extreme danger by just existing and that there may be spies following Erik around, the moment she goes to Damon and tells him she heard something outside her window, he dismisses her concerns?

All these plot holes, Danica’s super specialness, the lack of meaningful interaction between the characters and the poor writing and editing (at some point Danica was clearly ‘Eva’ and the author forgot to replace her name) made this a mediocre, forgettable experience that I would not recommend to anyone.

Four stars!

I really liked this story, the omega Dragon was a new twist. Also, I liked the how the dragons gave each other a hard time. However, I felt that the story was unfinished. I am hoping the rest of the story will be in the next book.

It was a meh for me

The story line had potential but as the story went on I got kinda bored.. even tho it was a reverse harem romance it was pretty light. I think it could have expanded some.. it seemed super rushed. Like some chapters could have seen more depth like when she first met them. Lol honestly felt like “she met them”, “she moved in with them” and “she fell for them” not much detail.. It’s like first you were reading she got captured and next.... she is already out the dungeon and found her way to the guys in less than 3 paragraphs lol 😂 hmm 🤔 maybe if it wasn’t so rushed it would be a nice story .. wish I could give more stars but the rushness of it just bugs me.

I couldn’t do finish the second book.

I’m sure the plot was good. There was even some dark themes to the book. But this book could be read by young teens there was no steam to the book at all and the characters were all whiny and fought more than they were devoted to her. The second book all they did was whine and apparently a year passed by? It left off on a cliffhanger in the first book and then picked up a year later with out telling you it was a year later. U find that out as u read into chapter 5 I believe. It was poorly set up and didn’t explain anything about their relationship at all

Female Dragons are a rare find, to the extent of being almost extinct. The Mad King of the Dragon Realm wants all female dragons that are able to be mated under his power. He plans on making them all Blood Mothers.
Danica has spent her life in hiding. Her parents knew the dangers that awaited her, and stole her away to the Human Realm in hopes of keeping her hidden, at least until she found her mate.
Magic is waning, the Mad King has men looking for Danica and the other 3 legendary females, and Danica's life is about to get heated in more ways than one.
She's a fireman, changing houses, and happens upon another dragon. Another Dragon? What in the world, or the human world is she supposed to do.
Due to an unfortunate situation Dani is thrust into a close proximity with possible mates.
Not just one but four.

There was enough intrigue going on in this book to get my interest in book 2. There are definitely a lot of plot holes and areas that are not cohesive to the story. The story didn't flow smoothly & a lot of things just didn't make sense. But I think it has potential though, if a person can overlook things. The ending is not really a cliff-hanger, and could be an ending of sorts, without moving on to book 2. Definitely not a book I'd want to re-read.

My Review: You put dragons and romance in a book and I am pretty much guaranteed to pick it up. I have the first two books in this series and I wanted to try it before picking up more books. I really enjoyed the setting of modern city, it makes it familiar and eases the reader into the fantasy realm slowly. We get to find out more information as we read. I liked Danica, she is tough yet naive, intelligent and determined, but makes some stupid mistakes. The guys were great and of course drool worthy but I found it difficult to set them apart in this first book. I think as we get to know them more it will get easier. I am definitely intrigued with the ending of this book and look forward to reading the next book.

Short, sweet and a little supernatural

I love a kickbutt heroine with a dash of supernatural awesomeness. The story was short and sweet, but a nice feel-good, love-wins story was what I was after. Hopefully book two is also as good

Finding Her Dragons

Danica Westley, one of four female dragons
Danica Omri, daughter of Shari and Finbar Omri, both born in the fires of the dragon realm.

"You, child, are a bright shining light in the darkness for your people. A sign that not all magic is lost." - Winter

Eric, Damon, Ben, Cass

Firefighter dragons

Blood Mother... A threat... A curse... A promise?

"You, child, are a bright shining light in the darkness for your people. A sign that not all magic is lost." - Winter

Danica Westley doesn't remember the Dragon Realm. All she has EVER known is Earth, and living among the humans. Her parents had fled years ago, when it had been revealed that only four female dragons had been born that generation... Out of hundreds. In an effort to protect their infant daughter from the mad Dragon King, Finbar and Shari had come to Earth.

Now Danica is a woman (dragon) grown, and is determined to make her own way in the world. All she needs to do is (1) avoid other dragons and (2) escape the King's attention. Easy peasey, lemon squeezy, right?

"She's going to ruin your perfect control," he wheezed at Erik. "She's gonna tear your entire world apart, and you're going to let her do it with a smile on your face." - Ben

A quartet of friends, Eric, Ben, Cass and Damon are firefighters... And dragons; it's one of the few jobs they can have that allows them to let their inner selves free, at least for a few moments. The discovery that their new "house mother" was one of the four missing females sends their world spinning... And when Danica's apartment building goes up in flames, Destiny will not be denied....

Wowza! Riveting! Grabs your attention and doesn't let go!

The couple: Danica, Erik, Damon, Castien, and Benjamin

Romance genre: shifter/reverse harem

Plot: Danica has spent her life avoiding dragons only to end up in a firehouse with four of them. She is in danger, though, because of the Dragon King and his desire for a breedable (is that even a word?) female. What's a girl to do? Obviously, get four mates to protect her.

Character development: There was a bit of a slow burn with the relationships, mostly because we were getting the backstory of our h, even though we didn't get enough, in my opinion.

Part of a series: Yes (Omega)

Would I read more from this author/in this series: undecided

This story has potential, but needs some development. I'm sure that some of the details will be hashed out in the sequel(s), but for now, I was left a little unsatisfied.

This is a RH, so there are four dragon suitors to this one omega. It was a little unclear what omega meant in this sense. Was it the healing ability? Something else? Position in a pack? Couldn't really tell.

There was also a lot of talk about her being a blood mother, but I couldn't really tell what that would mean either. Actual blood? Being bred again and again? Donating...something? I was confused on that point.

This wasn't a bad story, although I feel it could use some expansion. I hope things work out with her harem!

Danica is one of 4 female dragons left. Her family fled the dragon realm to protect her from their king not long after she was born and hid out in the human realm. Their king was a dragon so evil that he will kill a weak female dragon after childbirth, and he’s tortured his own children with no remorse.
Erik, Damon, Castien, and Benjamin have also fled the dragon realm, fleeing because they’re world was dying. Now all make their home in the human realm and satisfy their dragon by being firefighters and running into burning buildings and saving others.
This is a slow burn reverse harem. The relationship between Danica and her harem was built on love and was great to read. Danica has a true connection with each male in her harem and their relationship was solid. This is a HEA and it was great to read.
The story is well written, with characters you root for. I did wish for more on the sexual side of things, as there was only one scene and it’s with Danica and Damon. I’ve already downloaded Freeing Her Dragons and can’t wait to read what happens next!

I absolutely loved this book! I'd never heard of a reverse harem story before so my interest was definitely piqued. Then reading the story went by so fast because I couldn't put it down. I think there need to be more reverse harem novels lol I can't wait to read more.

I also like the idea that dragons can be living among us. Take a closer look at the really beautiful people in your life... are they who they say they are? If you want to know what I'm talking about, read the book! It's worth it. You won't want to put it down and when you finish, you'll want more.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I really liked it. Danica, the MC, is a wonderful character. She is a very strong and beautiful dragon. She is also hiding an amazing secret.
Ben, Erik, Castien, and Damon are four male dragons who work as firefighters. They are all instantly attracted to Danica and also realize how special she is.
I’m looking forward to the next book.
