Chicago’s Ferraro crime family will do anything to protect one of their own in this thrilling entry in the Shadow Riders series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan.
Nicoletta Gomez was a terrified teenager when Taviano Ferraro and his brother saved her life. Ever since, she’s been trying to rise above what was done to her, molding herself into a survivor under the protective eyes of the Ferraro family. All the while, she’s been falling hopelessly in love with the man who knows her darkest secrets.…
With one look, Taviano knew that Nicoletta was his, just as he felt their shadows connect. But no matter how much he wanted to claim her, he knew she needed time to become her own woman. When Nicoletta once again finds herself in the sights of dangerous men, a split-second decision has Taviano breaking all of the Ferraro family’s rules to keep her safe. And as far as he’s concerned, the reward is more than worth the risk.

IN HER WORDS: I've been a writer all of my life -- it is who I am. I write for myself and always have. The ability to create pictures and emotions with words is such a miracle to me. I read everything; I mean everything! All kinds of books, even encyclopedias. I am fascinated by the written word and I love storytellers. It is a great privilege to be counted one myself. (www.christinefeehan.com)
I've done my usual jumping into a series instead of starting with book one. I have done no research on this series because I do like to have honest reactions as uncover the details. I gotta say this is one storyline I don't think I have read before. It was different and unique in a way that made me really enjoy finding new discoveries. After finishing this book, I am pretty eager to go back to book one and see what unveiling I have missed in those books.
This unique storyline is enough to peak my interest in the series, but what really pushed me to loving Shadow Flight was Taviano Ferraro. In the beginning he had this intense focus on Nicoletta Gomez that I love to see in a hero. I know there is more of a back story with these two after reading this and I'm excited to be able to go back and see their beginning even if they were only side characters in previous books.
Taviano's devotion to Nicoletta is an addictive thing to read. I'm such a softy when it comes to heroes who clearly know who they want and will treat that woman like a treasure. Nicoletta has had a very horrible thing done to her in her past and the way he loves her, and focuses on her healing above his own desires was incredible.
Nicoletta is also a character easy to really like. I don't know if I will feel the same with the version of her before her change, which is mentioned in this book. This is one thing I am glad is spoiled for me because I can tolerate bad behavior if I know it is also the catalyst to their change...well, most of the time. It really does depend on the bad behavior. In Nicoletta's case, I know enough that she didn't do anything unforgivable. Her devotion to Taviano was just as intense, and good, and positive. She was a heroine worth this hero.
The hardest part about this book is the constant mention of the violence done to woman. That is something that is heavily mentioned and could be hard for some readers, myself included. What I do like is seeing these woman get their justice, to see these women heal at the hands of a loving male to show that there is good in the world. For me there has to be a balance like that and I do think the author accomplished this.
Overall, I just really like many things about the main characters, side characters and the uniqueness of the story line that I will be pursing the rest of this series.
Nicoletta was rescued from her uncles and being immersed in a sex trafficking ring at an early age. Now her worst nightmare has found her. To prove her worth to herself, she must be involved in bringing them down, the one thing Taviano is forbidden to do, he must do to give Nicoletta what she needs to face the future. Taviano knew Nicoletta was the one for him but he will have to risk everything to prove himself to Nicoletta.
We have watched Nicoletta grow up with her adoptive parents throughout the series. Now it's her chance to find love. Will the vengeful, young girl who kept lashing out, realize she is worth love?
The Shadow Riders have followed the Ferraro family as they traverse the razor’s edge of the shadow world being the judge, jury, and executioner to the true evils of the world. Shadow Flight is a heated, dark, and dramatic read, facing many hot buttons topics for lots of readers. This book is not for the light-hearted reader. That being said, Feehan doesn’t slack off on the explosive chemistry, the wounded hearted characters and the devotion of family.
I received this ARC copy of Shadow Flight from Berkley Publishing Group. This is my honest and voluntary review. Shadow Flight is set for publication May 5, 2020.
Christine Feehan’s Shadow Rider series is an exciting and romantic series centered around the powerful Ferraro family whose unique skills allows them to ride the shadows to bring deadly justice to evildoers.
Shadow Flight is the story of Taviano Ferraro and Nicoletta Gomez and this one has become my favorite shadow book. I didn’t know what to expect from this story since Nicoletta’s introduction in the first book as a broken, sexually abused teenager rescued by Taviano and his brothers. Taviano felt a connection to the broken young girl and immediately became her protector, along with the rest of his family.
I’m not a fan of the abused heroine trope and didn’t think Nicoletta’s would ever be completely ready to be in an adult relationship. However, this story didn’t just brush over the horrific abuse then “fix” the heroine with the power of love. Nicoletta’s healing evolved gradually through years of intense therapy, loving adoptive parents, and unconditional acceptance by the Ferraro family.
Taviano, especially, allowed Nicoletta the time and space to heal while always there to walk alongside her on her journey. Turns out that Taviano also experience childhood trauma of his own; therefore, both characters played a part in healing the other.
I loved that the story was primarily focused on the main characters while providing the backdrop of peril when one of Nicoletta’s rapist finds her and is determined to get her back with brute force. But, she is no longer a helpless teenager, alone in the world, at the mercy of brutal men. She’s spent years honing her physical and mental strengths and she has the entire Ferraro family waiting in the shadows to dispense justice on those who prey on the defenseless.
The suspense was electrifying as the various Ferraro teams step out from the shadows to take out vicious gang members sent after Nicoletta. The Ferraro’s are all about family and keeping their community safe. It was a revelation learning that their gift may also be a source of harm and provided an explanation of why their matriarch, Eloisa, behaves so harshly.
Emmanuelle is still moping over Val but I suspect the Saldi’s will make their next move against the Ferraro’s soon and it will be interesting to see how Val wins Emme back.
But I’m more excited to read about the other rider family, the Archambaults, especially Elie Archambault, maybe he will be paired with the Ferraro cousin Velia, and start a whole new chapter of shadow riders.
Overall Shadow Flight is story of strength, family, love, and healing. Very well done and very highly recommended.
I didn’t know whether to lock the doors and dive right in or savor Nicoletta and Taviano’s story one chapter bite at a time. Of course, you know which way I went!
Haunted by shame and a feeling of powerlessness, Nicoletta, after a rocky start with her new family, was devoted to the future. To getting stronger, mentally and physically, able take care of herself and those she loved. And that included Taviano... From the moment they met, he knew she was his one. Their road was rocky but now was their time and it was all I’d hoped it could be. Fighting old demons didn’t stop them from finally acting on their feelings. Instead it gave them an opportunity to show their love and support for each other and their family because family was important to them both.
I love this author’s stories of devotion, family and good vs evil. They don’t gloss over the hardships or the sometimes gritty bumps in the road. Instead, they embrace them as part of life and allow the characters to live them, the chance to overcome and become more… So true of Nicoletta, who instead of being a victim, fought for her strength and her ability to stand with Taviano as an equal. Their story was steamy and suspenseful, full of heart-touching (and funny!) camaraderie and family moments. Everyone has a moment to shine as brothers, sisters, cousins, spouses all want a part of the drama played out. If I needed a scorecard to keep straight newly introduced relatives, well, I hope that means even more happily ever after's to come. Another great read! ~Diane, 4.5 stars
Shadow Flight is the story fans of the Shadow series have been waiting for: Taviano and Nicoletta! These two have been dancing around each other for years, but danger has come seeking Nicoletta and Taviano is done waiting.
First, while you don't have to have read the previous books, the story has lots of previous characters, and Nicoletta has a very important back story. Shadow Flight gives you the information you need to be able to understand the story, but you might be a bit confused with all the characters and aforementioned events. Also, this series is fantastic, so you should read them all anyway! We have seen both Nicoletta and Taviano grow up over the course of the previous stories (the other Ferraro brothers) and that makes this story even more special!
Nicoletta's life is heartbreaking. What she went through was traumatic, and she is still not recovered. Pining for Taviano has become her constant companion. I really loved how Feehan made Nicoletta strong, yet still showed how she was struggling and how hard she had to work have the strength she has now. Nicoletta struggles with shame, disgust, self loathing, and more but still manages to work on improving herself. She studies everything, she trains with the Ferraro's, and she helps everyone she can. Its impossible not to love this girl.
Taviano is the youngest of his brothers and he knew the moment he met Nicoletta she was his soulmate. However, she was a terrified teenager. Waiting for Nicoletta to mature and get better was incredibly tough for him, but he throws that out the window when Nicoletta is in danger. In Shadow Flight, she is 20 (almost 21) at this point, so its not a creep factor for me. Taviano has spent the years learning how to help Nicoletta, even though she had no idea. He is so devoted and attune to her it is very swoon worthy.
Shadow Flight combines elements of paranormal romance, a touch of darkness, a close knit family, and deep love to create a story that will stick with you long after you finish.
POV: 3rd Tears: a few Trope: fated mates Triggers: Series/Standalone: stand alone (but you should really read the series!) Cliffhanger: HEA:

Love the Shadow Rider Series, with its romance, action, suspense, family bonds and life codes. All centered around the unique paranormal twist of riding the shadows to deliver justice. Shadow Flight does not only uphold this expectation, but I do believe it amps it up another notch. Truly a heart touching romance that brings a lump to your throat several times for Taviano and Nicoletta. One of the most powerful romances I've read this year.
Nicoletta Gomez, Survivor of severe abuse, has had quite the journey through this series. Beautifully written we experience her struggle to overcome the life she’d been forced into as a teen. Rescued, by the Ferraros, meant she now depended on those who knew her horror and all she’d gone through. Which added to her struggle to accept that she deserved the life and family that met her on the other side. To realize that she was worthy of love and could be important to anyone. This was no quick fix trauma, there will always be times it will haunt her. But she came to realize that the love of her foster family, Lucia and Amo, was not going away. That the support and direction from the Ferraro Family could not be shaken. Through counseling she learned her choices on how to react to everything were hers and hers alone, to recognize her triggers, to make her life mean something to her. She focused on that and decided to work to become the woman she knew she could be, the woman she remembered her mother to be, the woman she strived for by the examples of Lucia and the Ferraro women. The women good men, like the Ferraros, respected and loved.
Her story with Taviano although threaded through the other books, takes off just shy of her 21st birthday when her past comes back bringing danger to her and those she cares about. She needs Taviano to protect them, she needs to help. He would do anything for her even go against family code, sacrifice his calling to ride the shadows. Nicoletta would do anything for him, anything to spare him giving up the shadows, including marry him... Taviano Ferraro, known for his quick temper, had secrets he kept from even the family he loved, including the reasons behind that temper. Issues dealt on him through his dysfunctional parents that will break your heart. Trauma he suffered, passions he enjoyed, anything he couldn’t do perfectly or would have them look at or treat him differently. Then he found Nicoletta. He could be for her what he needed for himself. And he was her guardian angel all through the night. From the moment he first saw her to the moment they almost lost control are revisited and shared as Taviano finally opens up to Nicoletta about who they are to each other.
Christine revealed all the behind the scenes goings on during the three years Nicoletta had been in his life, beautifully, in heart felt emotions and revelations you have to read to experience. Nicoletta becomes to him not only someone he protects but someone he can finally share his demons with, share his passions and his imperfections. She brings him love, acceptance, and sees him as he is, not the face he wears. His patience, learning all he needs to help her, and ability to reel in his Alpha personality for the woman he loves, builds her confidence and opens her to believe his love is for her. He was her guardian and she became his. They were a team once they figured it all out, with Nicoletta’s quick mind and hunger to give love and be loved it would be easy for them to fall into place if the danger that was coming after her could be stopped.
Through the story, it’s revealed how special Nicoletta’s bloodline is and her capabilities and intelligence reveal she is truly one of them. She shows over and over what a strong woman and warrior she is. Eloisa reveals issues that makes them aware there might be more of a cost to excessive shadow riding. The fight brought to them by the Demons and Benito Valdez’ obsession with Nicoletta, call the Ferraros to arms, Danger coming from all directions, toward those who are family, has all the Ferraro family riders called to action. As they move to stop Benito we are introduced all the cousins, their riding skills and justice delivered, hints and possibilities through out making me excited and hopeful that this series will continue on to all the families in the Ferraro and Shadow Rider universe!
%th book of a series I did not know about and will be reading the first 4 books soon. The premise of this book was so different than anything I have ever read and I was hooked from the start. The Ferraro family is a crime family and they arr shadow riders. When Nicoletta Gomez's parents were killed she was then taken in by her step uncles who had abused her. Taviano Ferraro found and saved her. He had an instant attraction to her that wasn't just sexual. He has to take his time with her and convince her they belong together. He found foster parents for her and she was excepted into the Ferraro family. This family can hide in shadows and they use the shadows to travel. This was a great concept to me and so different from other books. I received this from NetGalley and Berkley for review.
One of the best things about an anticipated story is when they deliver the goods and Shadow Flight did that in spades. Taviano Ferraro and Nicoletta Gomez have been destined to be a couple ever since he saved her and brought her into the fold of the Ferraro Family. She was still a teen and Taviano had to wait until she was older before he made his intentions known. He’s been there for her from day 1 and his attention has been on her recovery. Nicoletta had to not only grow up, but she had to recover from the physical and sexual abuse she experienced at the hands of family and a brutal man. What the author did very well is create a situation in which both hero and heroine are forced to depend on one another and how they made it work.
I loved this story for many reasons but the most important is that it developed the characters and they were such a good match for one another. I couldn’t ask for a better hero in Taviano because he was so devoted to Nicoletta and his patience and understanding went above and beyond. He was in it for the long run. Nicoletta was not a shrinking violet herself and extended the courtesy to Taviano to be honest with him and to communicate what she is feeling. Another reason the story was so good is that it focused on the family the Ferraro’s have created for themselves and how they love and support one another. Stefano, the oldest and head of the family, takes his role seriously and it shows in how he treats both Taviano and Nicoletta. I loved how the author brought in each of the brothers, sister and cousins, to exact justice for Nicoletta in order for her to be free to live her life. Overall, this story was exceptional and the author has outdone herself with Shadow Flight.
Nicoletta is just really cute, “I think I’m so tired there aren’t any words. You took off your shirt. It’s kind of distracting.” The man appreciates when his woman is saucy, "Taviano could barely keep the grin from his face. His woman was no shrinking violet..." I liked this book, I loved how Nicoletta and Taviano made a good team.
I wasn't sure what I expected with Nicoletta and Taviano's book. From previous books, I knew Taviano had claimed her. I wasn't sure if she was ready for a Ferraro to claim her. Her life had been so hard since her parents died and she'd acted out since the Ferraro family had rescued her. But I underestimated Taviano. Don't ever underestimate a Ferraro. What was I thinking?
While this is book 5 of a series, I believe it would stand alone. The author does a great job of keeping everyone up to speed on what's going on. This book also has little tidbits about the couples we've seen before. It also features some of the other cousins. We learn more about those in New York and LA. I'm excited to see more books for those Ferraros.
The writing continues to be excellent. I love how the tale twists and turns in unexpected ways. I never would have guessed where this flight was taking the story. It changed everything. I also admired the task of dealing with the pain in the past for both of these characters. The authors note at the beginning gives a glimpse of the struggle the author had but she did an amazing job. Well done.
I have enjoyed every one of the books in this series. But this one has become my favorite. It might have something to do with Taviano's care of Nicoletta. His willingness to share and open up to her. His training history is as ugly as was another brothers. But he didn't issue orders at Nicoletta as Stephano might have done. No, he did something I never thought I'd see any Ferraro brother do. No I can't tell you but the point is, he put Nicoletta first. I loved that.
Both of these characters are strong and care for each other. They don't have a clue how much the other feels for them. It's adorable, really. But I so enjoyed them discovering the truth. And I was so impressed with Nicoletta. She stood up to Eloisa. I don't mean just ignoring her and letting that women's venom roll off her, I mean she laid her flat on more than one occasion. Go Nicoletta! You rock, girl.
I continue to adore this world. Shadow riders delivering justice when the law can't touch them. Powerful alpha men that protect and love hard. Strong women that fight many battles, though differently than the men, but are just as amazing as their men. It's a brilliant world that I enjoy visiting often.
If you haven't read this series, get started. It's a great escape.
Shadow Flight is a beautiful, and very romantic story. There's so many great points to be made in the continuing Ferraro saga. We had action, romance, soul searching, dark secrets revealed, potential health problems. Christine handle the subject of sexual abuse in a very realistic, and tasteful way. Abuse isn't something that goes away overnight. When Nicoletta's panic attacks happen the subject was handled in a beautiful, and heart healing way. I love action, and the first 100 pages satisfied my need to see the Shadow Riders in action.
The timeline jumps 2 years, and Nicolette has worked on honing her skills as a fighter, and building her self confidence. Taviano has researched, and spoken to therapists to learn how to assist Nicoletta during her panic attacks. When a dark secret is revealed regarding Taviano, Nicoletta steps up to care for her man, and also finds out about her family lineage.
Old enemies return, and want Nicoletta. The Ferraro family rise to meet the danger head on, and protect their family. Stefano, and Francesca's child has been born, and thrives. We finally meet the L.A. Ferraros, and see the N.Y. Ferraros also in action. Of course, Eloisa is always around to act like a harpy, but things are revealed about her health, that softens my attitude toward her. Just a little. I'm looking forward to reading Emme's book next year. I hope things can be worked out between Emme, and Val, and there was a misunderstanding, or Val said things to protect Emma's life. I hope Emne, and Val can make peace, to avoid a war between the Ferraros, and Saldis. Maybe a marriage of convenience, to broker peace. 😁
Well, it's official. I just can't read Christine Feehan any longer. I don't know if I've just lost my taste in her reading or what. It seems to always be the same thing. Boy sees girl, falls for girl, has lots of sex, saves girl from bad guys, more sex, beats the bad guys, the more sex.
I used to love her Carpathian series but lost interest in that one as well. Maybe it was because I was younger and in my 20's and now in my 40's I just have a different taste of books. Honestly, I think I started turning away from reading her books after the violent rape scene she had in her Sisters of Sea Haven (?) books. No, just no. I can deal with a character who was raped but I do not want to read a violent rape scene.
So, yeah, I really wanted to read this one and kinda still want to read Emmanuel's story too but I just don't think I can do it. Her writing style feels so meandering now, just going on and on about something before moving to a new subject. It's just not for me any longer.
I love Taviano and Nicoletta's story. I wonder if Christine will ever write the story for Enzo and Emilio. The Ferraro family became my favourite. I wonder if there will be a crossover between the Shadow Riders series and Torpedo Ink
Shadow Series Book #5 Release Date: May 5, 2020 Review by Slavica G Kukich
Shadow Flight is book 5 of Christine Feehan Shadow series, action packed romance of Nicoletta and Teviano. In this book we learn more about Ferraro family mission and purpose as shadow riders, and risks they take. As much as I love this book, be forewarned; it contains sexually explicit material, violence and abuse. Nicoletta Gomez was a young terrified teen when she was rescued by Teviano Ferraro and his brothers from the nightmare she was living in after her parent’s death. Farraro’s treated her as one of the family. They made sure she had the education and care she needed by placing her in foster care of Lucia and Amo Fausti. Teviano Ferraro knew Nicoletta Gomez was his from the moment he set eyes on her and their shadows touched. At 17 Nicoletta experienced trauma and abuse no one should ever endure. Teviano knew Nicoletta needed time to heal and grow into womanhood. For those of us following the series it’s very much anticipated story of Nicoletta and Teviano. I loved their story so much, reading it once was not enough. Teviano’s patients and care touched me. When Nicoletta and her friends are in danger Teviano, his brothers, and cousins come together and will stop and nothing to keep them safe. Anyone who is a fan of Shadow Series will love this book as much as I did. For those that have not read them yet, give them a try. You may just love them as much as I do. What to live longer? Read a book, and until next time happy reading!
Reading this book was a compulsion I could not shake. From book 1 you know Tavianno and Nicoletta are gonna get together. And I HAD to know how Feehan was gonna pull it off. Doesn't matter that by this point I know that all these Ferraro boys are "different" but exactly the same. Doesn't matter that by now I know *everyone's* dialogue is impossibly weird and exactly the same. I know that there's just enough mystery to keep me wanting to read another book (I swear to god, I need some resolution to Emmanuelle's plot line) and now there's enough characters with back story for this godforsaken series to go on forever and ever. Lemme tell you about this book. Feehan killed off upwards of 30 people using the "same signature move". That was a direct quote by the way. Except I had to read it more than thirty times. Nicoletta and Tavianno rehashed their plot for longer than they had actual plot. A good 15% of the book is backstory/"world building" that she also spent too much time on in the other previous 4 books (I realize it's kinda necessary for these types of authors but cmon, their world isn't that difficult to walk into). It's empty, it's boring, and I'm no expert - but I don't think she did a great job handling the great traumas these two characters experienced. I think I've finally found the strength I need to walk away.
So good! I had been a little apprehensive about Nicoletta and Taviano's story as there had been so much tension between the two in the previous books, but the story took a direction I had not expected, even if I should have. Nicoletta did a lot of growing up and maturing off the page between books. When she is identified by one of the Demons and in major danger, she turns to Taviano and leans far more about the Shadow Riders than she is supposed to. I really enjoyed their story and the way they grow together. Nicoletta's past and the sexual abuse she suffered as a teen is a major part of her story. The fact that Taviano had also been abused was quite the surprise. I cannot speak to the representation, but it seemed to be handled well and in a realistic manner. We learn quite a bit about the cousins, the other riders from New York and LA. I am wondering if after Emme's story we'll start to step into their worlds. I'd definitely come along for the ride. Overall another fabulous addition to the series. TW: rape, abuse

Some excellent description of the story and characters to be found on GR. All I want to say is CF did a fantastic job not riddling this book with never ending sex scenes. She actually, for a change, did a very good job of portraying Nicolette's emotional and spiritual growth that eventually led her to a deep meaningful relationship with Taviana. It was heart rending in a few places but realistic in the PTSD and long term effects on children who have been grossly sexually abused. Well done!!! There are several surprises in this book that move the story line forward for Eloisa and Emmie. I have been fatigued at the excess sex scenes employed by CF so this book is a breath of fresh air and now I am cautiously looking forward to Emmie's book.
I gave this 5 stars because of Taviano's respect for Nicoletta's boundaries, care for her even when she acted out, and respect for her need to control her recovery from her traumas. Christine's character development shines here.
*My honest review was made possible by an Advanced Reader Copy from the publisher.
Just keep writing Christine. I am a big fan of all of Christine Feehan's books. This was is another great read. I liked that the sex wasn't a huge part of this book like in some of her others. Good plot and can see the build up for more in this series - but she must write faster!
Nicoletta Gomez’s life was abusive and traumatic before being rescued by the Ferraro family. They brought her into their world and gave her a look into who they really are. Taviano Ferraro has been in love with Nicoletta since the first time he saw her, but she was just too young at the time. A trip for her friend’s birthday brings danger from her past and brings Nicoletta a look at what Taviano life is really like. Will they be able to overcome their pasts individual pasta and along with the past they’ve had together to find the love and acceptance they’ve been looking for. A Shadow Flight may just bring them the unconditional love they’ve been looking for. Nicoletta Gomez is regretting asking for a favor to take her three best friends on a trip to Los Angeles to see their favorite singer for one’s twenty-first birthday. The friends are flirting outrageously with the Taviano Ferraro the man she’s been in love with for years. She can see that he isn’t looking happy about the situation. When Taviano comes to talk with Nicoletta and she’s given a look at what he’s got in store for them once she turns twenty-one in a few weeks. Nicoletta is still feeling guilty about what happened between them a few years ago when they were both drunk. She also doesn’t believe that he can feel anything for her because of the abuse she suffered at the hands of her three step uncles and a man by the name of Benito Valdez the leader of a very brutal gang called the Demons. At the concert Nicoletta recognizes a voice from her past and along with her friends try to make an escape. She texts Taviano for help and he gives her directions for getting to safety and him. Unfortunately, the four of them get separated and Taviano is injured. Thanks to Nicoletta’s training with the Ferraro women in self-defense she’s able to get away when grabbed. A ride into the shadows gives her a look at what the Ferraro family really does. She gets sick but quickly catches on to what they have to do and takes care of two of her friends so that aren’t able to see what Taviano is going to do. Back up arrives and takes the friends to a safe house and plans are made to bring Nicoletta’s foster parents into a safe house so that they’re safe as well. Taviano is extremely impressed with Nicoletta and how as never travelling through the shadows before to go into them four times and come out better at riding the shadows than when she started. Taviano explains everything about what they do and uses her own story as an example of what the shadow riders do. Nicoletta agrees to marry him to keep him out of trouble with the head of the family and so he can keep doing the work he loves plus she absolutely adores him and he brings out a specially made ring and they make a stop in Las Vegas. She thinks he’s making a sacrifice and they’ve essentially made an arranged marriage and wants to take steps so that Taviano is protected. They move into his house and agree to be honest with each other. Nicoletta asks for information about him and Taviano reveals to her something only his parents know about and asks her not to tell his family because he doesn’t want them treating him differently. A visit from his mother has Nicoletta and her making an agreement. Taviano stops his mother from hitting Nicoletta. Nicoletta gets so angry and upset that she leaves the house and Taviano calls for a ride to take his mother home. Feelings are revealed and a reciprocated with each other. A big wedding is planned even though they’re already married. Even though Nicoletta was already considered family she’s more fully involved in the shadow riders’ side because of her lineage. She begins to remember things about her real mother. She also remembers that she’s always been drawn to the shadows. Nicoletta has also vowed to be better as a wife and a shadow rider so that she can go on assignments with Taviano. Taviano and Nicoletta work on her shadow skills in the house. Even Taviano and Nicoletta go on a mission with his oldest brother so he can review her skills to see if she can continue to become a shadow rider. A trip by the head of both sets of cousins to the mother brings information that could change the lives of all shadow riders now and in the future. A plan comes together to make sure all the Ferraro family will be safe and not revealed to the public. The whole family meeting and meal ends up being cut short because of Taviano having a reaction that Nicoletta makes sure he’s safe and watched over. His secret comes out to his oldest brother, who is angry about what happened. Word comes that Valdez has arrived in the area. Taviano, his brother and Nicoletta make their way to where they know the bad guys are coming for her. She wants to see the man obsessed with her die. A wedding takes place and a future to look forward to. Christine Feehan takes on the world of shadow riders once again with Shadow Flight. A couple whose pasts are similar must face the passion and danger of her past. Patience, trust and understanding show that true unconditional love can over come obstacles. The world of the shadow rider characters is complex and full of secrets and that their lives aren’t what the public sees. I’m looking forward to the next book in the Shadow Rider series. I’m also excited to read any new book of Christine Feehan.
SHADOW FLIGHT is the fifth instalment in Christine Feehan’s contemporary, adult. SHADOW RIDERS erotic, paranormal romance series focusing on the Ferraro family. This is Taviano Ferraro and Nicoletta Gomez’ story line. SHADOW FLIGHT can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
SOME BACKGROUND: The Shadow Rider male must find his mate –a woman who is capable of riding the shadows-or at the very least with the ability to bear children with the shadow-riding gene. Within the family, the Ferraro siblings are tasked with finding a mate, fated by DNA, who is capable of continuing the family line. People with the ability to ride the shadows are few and far between, and future generations are at risk if no mates are found with the shadow-riding gene. The Ferraro’s are also part of the Chicago Underworld-a crime family linked to both legal and criminal activity.
NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be some triggers for more sensitive readers. Nicoletta was first introduced to the readers in book one Shadow Rider.
Told from several third person perspectives including Tatiana and Nicoletta, and Ricco and Mariko (Shadow Reaper #2) SHADOW FLIGHT focuses on the building relationship between soon to be twenty-one year old Nicoletta Gomez and Taviano Ferraro. Years earlier, following the death of her parents, Nicoletta found herself in the custody of her step-uncles, who ritually raped and abused our heroine. At the age of eighteen, Nicoletta was rescued by the Ferraro family, and placed in the hands of a loving foster family, where she began to act out against the people in charge. Fast forward to present day wherein, a now almost twenty-one year old Nicoletta, once again, finds herself struggling to survive when her past, in the guise of Benito Valdez, the leader of the gang who call themselves the Demons, specializing in human sexual trafficking, sets a plan into motion to reclaim our heroine, as his personal $ex toy. What ensues is the quick building relationship and romance between Nicoletta and Taviano, and the potential fall-out as the Demons come searching for Nicoletta Gomez, and Taviano’s actions and claiming of Nicoletta are called into question by the family leadership.
Taviano Ferrera has known Nicoletta Gomez to be his mate from the moment of her rescue by the Ferraro family, three years earlier. With their shadows entwined, and continually tightening with each encounter, Taviano knew it was only a matter of time before he claimed Nicoletta as his own but trying to outrun Benito’s men found Taviano pulling Nicoletta into the shadow world, a world she knew very little about, but had begun to experience a few times on her own. Using the shadows to travel causes immense pain and anguish for those not ready and untrained in the world, and for this reason, Taviano is called to task for exposing Nicoletta to potential harm, and revealing the truth about the world in which they lived.
Meanwhile, matriarch Eloisa Ferraro continues to cause problems for the Ferraro family with her ongoing hatred of her sons’ mates. The vitriol and anger directed at the females, who will produce the much needed heirs to the world of the shadows, is called into question as Eloisa struggles with her sons’ choices, and the loss of her power as the Queen of the Chicago Underworld. Secrets will be revealed that will affect everyone involved.
The relationship between Taviano and Nicoletta began as a rescue but Taviano quickly discovered that Nicoletta was a shadow rider when their shadows entwined. Refusing to claim his underage mate, Taviano watched from the sidelines as Nicoletta acted out, all the while, continuing to protect the woman with whom he would fall in love. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
If you are a fan of Christine Feehan, you will notice the many similarities between Taviano and Nicoletta, and Dimitri and Skylar (Dark/Carpathian). Both females had been raped and abused; the heroes bide their time before claiming their under-aged mates; and their treatment of their mate is gentle and loving.
Once again, there is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including all of the Ferraro siblings, their mates, their mother Eloisa Ferraro, numerous cousins from all over the world, as well as Nicoletta’s foster parents Lucia and Amo. The shear number of members of the Demons is overwhelming- naming every member about to face his death was unnecessary and time consuming.
I did have a couple of other issues including the authors need to reveal Taviano’s continuing relationship with other women knowing Nicoletta was his mate-apparently just knowing someone is your mate does not guarantee monogamy or faithfulness in the world of the Shadow Riders ;and Ricco and Mariko’s need to perform Shibari sexual rope play, on the roof of a diner, immediately before and after killing several members of the Demos gang-although the author explains the overwhelming sexual need and excitement over the kill, but on the roof of a dirty diner, in the middle of a killing field, is questionable on so many levels but I suspect added to the story for the titillation factor ;)
SHADOW FLIGHT is a story of family and blood, obsession and determination; retribution, murder and revenge. The slow building premise will captivate your attention; the characters are numerous, colorful and energetic; the romance is seductive and impassioned. If you are a fan of Christine Feehan, sit back and enjoy the world of the Shadow Rider.
Shadow Flight by Christine Feehan is the 5th book in her fantastic Shadow Riders series. I love this series, as each and every book has been great. With that being said, Shadow Flight may be the best one yet, though I loved Stefano and Francesca in the first book. Refresher: Shadow riders have the ability to blend themselves to the shadows wherever they are, making themselves invisible to anyone. They have been in existence for centuries, with all members of their families trained to use those abilities. The family runs a legitimate business; they use their ability to help others in need to solve various problems and dispense justice. They are an extremely powerful and close-knit family that is totally loyal to one another, also protecting the people that in live in their community.
Taviano, our hero in this story, has always privately loved Nicoletta since he helped rescue you her from an evil gang leader, who ran a sex trafficking ring. Nicoletta, our heroine, thinks Taviano is wonderful, but has no idea that he loves her. When he offers the Ferraro plane to take Nicoletta and her three friends to a concert, things will drastically change, when at the concert, she is recognized by a gang member, and her three friends are kidnapped, as she manages to escape and get to Taviano. Nicoletta remembers vividly her time in captivity and the abuse she had to endure; she desperately convinces Taviano they need to save her friends. In doing so, Taviano needs to take her through the shadows to help save her friends, which is considered a no-no, as being a shadow rider is a Ferraro secret; after the rescue, he decides to go to Las Vegas and marry Nicoletta, in order to be able to keep his being a shadow rider. Nicoletta was shocked at first, but she knew that she had some ability to travel through shadows from her family growing up; she also loved Taviano, but worried that he didn’t love her. In a short time, she would learn how wrong she was.
The story does revolve around Nicoletta’s past, her sexual abuse, and her determination to be a strong shadow rider. Taviano was a great hero, his love of Nicoletta was wonderful, and he was so patient and understanding with her. Nicoletta was also a great heroine, who as the story continued, she was even more so as she stood up to the nasty matriarch, Eloise. I loved them together, and Christine handled the sex scenes very well. We got to spend time with some of the other cousins, who are part of the Ferraro family, and I am hoping Emme’s story comes soon. It really was awesome to see everyone take part of fighting the gang members, who are trying to get to Nicoletta and bring her back to the evil leader.
What follows is an intense, pulse pounding, exciting adventure, where Nicoletta is in constant danger, and Taviano, with the entire Ferraro family trying to be one step of the gangs coming and stopping them from getting anywhere near her. I will not give spoilers, as I do not want to ruin it for you; especially since this was a masterpiece.
What I love the most about this series is all the wonderful characters that Feehan has created. I love all of the Ferraro’s, and those they fall in love with that join the family. They are an awesome family, with amazing abilities that make this so much fun.
Shadow Flight is a captivating, exciting, suspenseful, action packed story, with a wonderful couple that we couldn’t help but love. This was an awesome addition to this series, and loved how Feehan ended with the last 1/3 of the book. This is a fantastic paranormal series that you should be reading, and very well written by Christine Feehan.
We first meet Nicoletta in Book 1 of the series. The Ferraro family rescue her from a horrible situation and find her adoptive parents in their neighborhood. That way they can watch over her. Now we’re in Book 5 and she’s all grown up, but still struggles daily with the horrors of her past.
Taviano, the youngest Ferraro has had a soft spot for Nicoletta ever since her rescue. When evil comes for Nicoletta again, Taviano and the rest of the Ferraros circle the wagons.
I love reading about the Ferraros and I always enjoy revisiting the series. Taviano is so protective and patient with Nicoletta. I thought they paired well together. Nicoletta has suffered so much but she refuses to give up. Her quiet strength and core of steal help her fight her demons and hold her own against Taviano’s fierce stubbornness.
I’m hoping against hope that Emmanuelle’s book is next! She’s the only sister and last of the Ferraros to pair up and her book should be a doozy! She’s in love with the nephew of an enemy family. Will she follow her heart or her duty to the family? We need to know!
I enjoyed the book and I’m looking forward to the next one.
***I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of the book provided by the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affects or influences my thoughts and feelings about the story***
Stopped reading at the point where it's stated explicitly that Taviano - despite knowing that Nicoletta is his, all his, and despite deliberately entwining their shadows, and despite warning off other men who want to date her, and despite telling the neighbourhood (though not her) that they're engaged, and despite cuddling her in bed every night - is still screwing other women; not because he has Feelings for them (those are for Nicoletta) but because he is a Man and he has Needs.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
If you've been following Christine Feehan's Shadow Riders series, you've been waiting for this book since the beginning. Taviano and Nicoletta have been circling each other since book one and this is their story. Taviano has been waiting for Nicoletta to grow up, and to heal enough from the traumatic abuse she suffered before he could make her his. When the gang that had her finds her again, Taviano has to step up not only his plans to marry Nicoletta, but also his plans to tell her about shadow riders. Nicoletta might think at first that Taviano is marrying her for reasons other than love, but he plans to work hard to set her straight on that count!
This was a tough story because both Nicoletta and Taviano have suffered terrible things in their pasts, and are still learning how to cope with what was done. Trauma shadows their pasts and neither believed they deserved (or would get) someone who would or could love them unconditionally. But they are a perfect fit. The story itself dragged a bit, and I thought was a bit anticlimactic, but it gives new readers especially a view of the world the Ferraro family lives in. It seemed a bit unbalanced that we read chapters detailing each of the gangs coming to Chicago and how (spoiler) they get killed, but then the main guy gets about a paragraph- almost like he'd been forgotten until the last second. There was a lot of the repetition I expect in one of Feehan's books, which I admit meant there were sections I skimmed because I just can't read the exact same thing ten times. At some point, you have to assume the readers got the idea of how the Ferraros were trained, why certain things happen, etc. and stop repeating it every few pages. But the story between Taviano and Nicoletta was good- I loved how patient they are with each other and how their love shines through everything they do.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
3,5 Sterne Ich mag die Reihe sehr gerne, aber konnte mich stellenweise nicht in die Charaktere hineinversetzen. Und ein entscheidender Punkt, es fehlt eine deutliche Triggerwanrung!!!
Fifth in the Shadow Riders paranormal romance series and revolving around the Ferraro family based in Chicago. The couple focus is on Taviano Ferraro and Nicoletta Gomez.
My Take I'm missing the whole idea that the Ferraros are a crime family. Seems they're more of a family passionate about righting wrongs...? Can anyone explain this to me??
I do love and adore how inclusive the Ferraros are, how caring and supportive, which somewhat offsets all the melodrama of Shadow Flight, melodrama that really slows down the pace.
Part of that caring shows in Taviano's slow seduction of Nicoletta, as he makes such allowances for her traumatic past. That poor Nicoletta, to go from loving parents to those disgusting step-uncles...yuck!! It's really done a number on her sense of self. How can a government agency allow this!??
It sure slowed Nicoletta down when it came to those three "friends". How greedy can they get??? You'd think they would be more decent, especially after they confess their true problems to Nicoletta. I gotta confess, it seemed more as if Feehan was aiming for some effect, but I can't figure it out. She painted those friends as such awful people and that flopped it over 180-degrees. And for what? For a few more pages?
That Nicoletta certainly got lucky that a social worker cared enough. Although I do wonder how that social worker knew to make those inquiries.
Ooh, that new negative about traveling via shadow makes for an intriguing weakness. And more foreshadowing for the next book. Hmmm, the idea of a reality show could well be a bit more foreshadowing.
There are two primary conflicts in this: Nicoletta angsting over her love for Taviano and the brutality she suffered with her step-uncles and Taviano's taking Nicoletta through the shadows before she was trained. This last appeared to be overkill. Oy. Yep, we know all this through Feehan's use of third person dual protagonist point-of-view from Nicoletta's and Taviano's perspectives. And they do go on and on and on at length.
Nicoletta is an ambitious girl who doesn't want to let anyone down, anxious to help the people who helped her, and learn how to defend herself. I can't blame her for being upset about that background check. We all want to be valued for ourselves and not our bloodline.
Taviano is pretty amazing with his interest in music and cooking, good with knives and electronics, and designing racing engines.
And we have to suffer through the meme of he-doesn't-really-love-me. Which leads to the really annoying angst of not wanting the fancy wedding. Why wouldn't she be wearing the gown Lucia would want to see her in?
Okay, I can appreciate the need for alibis, and it's one heckuva way to acquire them, lol.
Eloisa is the poster mother for a woman who should never have been a mother. I do appreciate our time period where we can talk about traumas and abuses. Where we can get help to deal with our pasts. Now, if Eloisa would just do that...'cause I just don't understand how a mother can treat her own children as Eloisa did...
Oh, YES. I love the verbal beat-down Nicoletta gives Eloisa! I cannot believe that Eloisa thought that a few years would absolve her of her cruelty???!
Action-wise, oh yeah, there's plenty. Now, normally I love all that, ahem, violence, and Shadow Flight was rather tame. Oh, it was brutal all right, but kinda dull.
The Story It's been three years since Taviano rescued Nicoletta. A long three years in which she has screamed and twisted with anger in her struggle to get past the brutality she suffered with her step-uncles.
Nicoletta has also suffered over what she thought was her secret love for Taviano.
Seems that marriage, for a Ferraro, is forever.
The Characters Nicoletta Gomez was saved from a lifetime of the worst brutality known to a woman. Lucia and Amo Fausti are her loving foster parents. Lucia's Treasures is a clothing shop that sells unique fashions. Someone owns a flower shop, and some indications point to the Faustis and one to Theresa Vitale whose son, Bruno, took it over. Cencio had been the Faustis' oldest son, friendly with Stefano as well as in the military along with him.
Nicoletta's parents had been Leora Aita and Asce Archambault, a cousin of the French riders. Her stepfather, Desi Gomez, was an ex-member of the Demons. Desi's brothers, Nicoletta's step-uncles, were Cruz, Alejo, and Diego.
The Ferraros are... ...part of a worldwide group of shadow riders, who can use a shadow to transport themselves anywhere. Their mission is to execute those who do wrong. The family based in Chicago has the bitchy, cold Eloisa for their mother. Phillip had been their jerk of a lazy, philandering father. Henry grew up with the family and works on their cars. He also seems to be Eloisa's lover, and he knows exactly how much interest Eloisa doesn't have in her children.
Taviano Ferraro has his own sordid past that gives him great insight. He and his oldest brother, Stefano, saved Nicoletta that night. Stefano, the head of the Chicago family, is married to Francesca (Shadow Rider, 1), and they have a son Crispino "Cristo".
Emmanuelle is their sister, heartbroken due to a cruel past with Valentino Saldi. The brothers include Ricco, who has a passion for Shibari, and is married to Mariko, another trained rider (Shadow Reaper, 2). Vittorio, who's married to Grace (Shadow Warrior, 4), trains Nicoletta on speed and how to throw a proper punch and kick with maximum power. Giovanni is married to Sasha (Shadow Keeper, 3), who is amazing with electronics. Sasha works with Rigina and Rosina Greco, investigators for the Ferraros. Ettore was the brother who didn't survive the shadows.
Demetrio and Drago Palagonia are second cousins and trained bodyguards. Franco is the family pilot. Elie Archambault is a great trainer due to his speed. Primarily a rider, he takes side jobs as a bodyguard. Emilio Gallo is another cousin. Sasha's brother, Sandlin, has a brain injury that's killing him. Dr Elliot is a pioneer in the field of head trauma. Katie Branscomb works with Grace to plan the wedding and Eloisa's charity event.
The LA Ferraros include Marzio, Tore, and their baby sister, Velia; Severino is the head of this branch of the family. I'm not sure if the lightning fast Maximino, the direct Remigio, and the graceful Vico (definitely a Chicago Ferraro cousin) are brothers or cousins.
The New York Ferraros include Damian Ferraro, a talented jeweler; Salvatore, who is women-shy; Lucca, who is the player; and, Geno, who is too tough, are brothers.
Alfieri Ferraro is their uncle and a member of the Ferraro international council.
The Archambaults are... ...a prestigious shadow rider family in France renowned for their psychic talents. They are also the only family sanctioned to kill riders for breaking their laws. Marcellus says Nicoletta is a treasure.
Kain Diakos is a performer whom Nicoletta and her friends adore. Pia Basso has a huge birthday wish. Bianca is Pia's sister; she's brokenhearted over Enzo Gallo. Clariss Naples is the third friend. Dario Bosco had wanted to claim Nicoletta. Tito Petrov is the son of (and a co-owner with his father) of Taviano's favorite pizzeria, Petrov's. Berta is a waitress there. Pietro Masci owns a popular deli.
Shadow riders travel using shadows, which means they can travel very quickly throughout an area totally unseen. There are brutal negatives to it. Former riders become greeters. Other family members may be investigators.
The Demons are... ...a bloody gang based in New York City that revels in human trafficking, drugs, and gunrunning. Benito Valdez is their nutjob of a boss with an unholy passion for Nicoletta. Armando Lupez is his second-in-command. Armando's team includes Jorge and Rocko.
In LA, Iker is the vice-president of the Demons; Tonio Valdez, one of Benito's brothers, is in charge. Gang members include Santiago, Armando, Carlos, the driven Victor, Danny, and Zeus. The St Louis Demons include Emidio as the boss, Aleto, Blas, Cleto, Juan, Marcos, Carlos, and Don. From Detroit?? comes Ed, who is their leader, and is accompanied by Carl, Thomas, Adan, Moe, Deke, Berto, David, Hugo, Moe, Boz, and Benja. The Demons from Oklahoma City are ruled by Joaquin Valdez and the team he sends includes Brio, Cruz, the annoying Eber, Lon, and Ed. The Demons from Camden, New Jersey, are led by Thiago Valdez, another of Benito's brothers. Those poor Chicago Demons, so used to having the upperhand, aren't doing too well against the well-established gangs. Of the fourteen men they have left, three are wounded. Bario is their leader and the remaining team includes Alan, Hector, Angel, Felix, Ivan, Leo, Elias, Luis, Omar, and Pablo.
The Saldi Family is... ...the Ferraros' enemy from back in the day. In Sicily, they had been the ruling crime family. Yeah, those Saldis really weren't nice...
The Cover and Title The cover is fast with its collage of lit-up buildings jumbled together, the plane in the background with the pink and purple lights to the right of the besuited Taviano looking out at us as he adjusts his cufflink. Below him is a blur of turquoise, yellow, and white streaking from left to right. An info blurb is at the top in white with the author's name in a black-shadowed lime green across Taviano's forehead. Level with his bent forearm is the series info in turquoise below which is the title in white.
The title reflects the inciting incident, the Shadow Flight that brings Nicoletta and Taviano together.
Taviano and his siblings are shadow riders, meaning they can disappear into the shadows and ride the tubes of the shadows to get from one place to another very fast. The family are essentially assassins and use their gift to meet out justice for people who have been hurt in very bad ways. They kill the worst of the worst so even though they are a very dangerous family and a lot like mobsters, they do it for a good cause. He and his family saved Nicoletta from her vile uncles who abused her and now he and his family keep her safe.
Nicoletta asks the Ferraro family if they can get tickets to a concert for her friend's birthday. Taviano goes with the girls to keep them safe but someone from Nicoletta's past spots her there and tries to kidnap her and her friends. Taviano has always had feelings for Nicoletta so when she asks to go with him to rescue her friends, it doesn't take much to convince him even though bringing her along might put him in deep water with his older brother.
The guys chasing Nicoletta are the same ones who abused her when she was with her evil uncles after her parents died so she wants to make sure her friend is alright or at least be there for her if she needs a woman to help her through what's happened to her. Taviano agrees to her request but puts her in danger by letting her come along.
Once the friend is rescued they have to make some hard choices about their relationship because she's now nearly twenty-one years old and Taviano has decided to pursue her in a romantic way. At first Nicoletta thinks that he's doing that because he has to until he finally lets her know how he's always felt about her. So their relationship starts out a little bumpy and she's not sure she can ever be with him in a sexual way because of what happened to her in the past but she feels safe around him and is head over heels in love with him so she agrees to give it a try.
He's a really nice guy under the hard exterior but I already knew that from seeing him in the other books in this series. The whole family goes after the gang that is after Nicoletta, they work well together. The family wants to make sure she is safe from this gang.
Their romance is slow and sweet because Taviano has to go slow with her but once Nicoletta feels more comfortable around him the romance gets hot and spicy. It was nice to watch these two get closer.
The most shocking thing in this book though was what was happening to Taviano's mother, Eloisa. In all the books in this series so far, she's been a hateful, vile woman that seems to hate her own daughter and wants to make everyone's life hell. She seems to hate all of her daughters-in-laws and there's never a real reason for her to act this way...until now. If you've been a fan of this series, you'll want to read this book to get caught up on this and the other things going on in Taviano's siblings' lives.
This series is one of my favorites right now because of the characters and all of the secondary characters that always pop up that are so interesting. They have a lot of cousins, some of them are also shadow riders so there's always talk about who they're going to go after next and why.
This series has a little bit of everything, intrigue, danger, romance, mobster-like families, alpha men who love with all their hearts and supernatural gifts that let them do things regular people cannot.
