This is a fantastic debut novel. Congratulations Lisa Hall!!
WOW!!
It was suggested that I go into reading this book blind. I didn't go in completely blind but I didn't read as many reviews as I normally would. Actually the description itself is fairly short. Perfect description for this book. But it pulled me right in. I wanted to read it right at that moment.

This is a fantastic psychological thriller. It ticks all the boxes. Gripping and suspenseful with a surprising twist. I honestly read this book faster than any book I've read recently.
I had to see how it played out...
We know immediately that this marriage is not a good one. Charlie is a corporate lawyer that works long hours and Sal stays home to take care of their daughter, Maggie.
The author has written the story so it shows everything from both Sal and Charlie's POVs. Alternating back and forth there's a little bit of overlap but it's quite interesting to see both sides of the same moments.
Sometimes when I hear that there is a big twist in a story I go crazy trying to figure things out. I'm not often right but sometimes I come close. Oh and I really did think I had this one all figured out. Then I changed my mind, then the story changed my mind, then I thought I knew again, and then I just stopped trying to figure it all out and enjoy the story! In the end I was half right but honestly it doesn't even matter! There were many other things going on that kept this book interesting and I put everything I had to do aside to finish it today.
I'm really not going to say anymore because I really do not want to give anything away. I highly recommend this book. Don't read a lot of reviews either. But if you do happen to figure it out or see something by accident, read the book anyways. It's just that good!

I did NOT see this coming. The twist was brilliant, and several things from previous chapters made even more sense. Besides the refreshing ending, I loved the two POVs.
It’s not often you find a book describing the abuser and abused simultaneously, going over the same events with totally different ways of looking at them. It’s chilling how someone can be in denial to the extent the abuser was, but I loved that the abuser sometimes wondered about its behavior. The description of the abuse was hard to read, and working as a psychologist it really hit home what abused people go through. The only minus was that sometimes the same theme was repeated, and some coincidences were too good to be true. But besides that, a superb psychological thriller that I absolutely recommend.

I'm going to keep my lips sealed as much as possible on this one. I feel like I had an advantage reading this before it had a chance of being spoiled for me. Yes, there is a significant twist, but my rating wasn't wrapped up solely in that. It played a part, but I felt like this was a story that needed to be told.
The plot revolves around an abusive relationship between Charlie and Sal. Please go into this completely blind; don't read reviews (you probably shouldn't be reading mine!). The alternating POVs tell the story from both sides which I appreciated; a few times it felt a little repetitive but overall it told different parts of the story that was unseen to the other. Please read this! Even if you figure out the twist, this book is so much more than that. I'll be looking out from more from author Lisa Hall!

I may be in the minority on this one. There was no WOW factor for me.
There is nothing I like more than a mind blowing psychological thriller that leaves me with my jaw dropped to the floor. From the teaser in the title, I expected an amazing thriller with a shocking twist. Unfortunately it fell flat for me. Deciphered this one early....no surprise for me.... Damn !
I hope everyone else has better luck with this book than I did!

First of all, reading this book was really hard for me, it was full of abusing and really made me uncomfortable. I don’t mind a bit but in this one, it was too much, regarding that the story was based on it. But I should say the writing was addictive (and sometimes repetitive but I don’t mind it). All the time I was searching for the mystery in the story but I couldn’t find it and at the end when I found what was the mystery it disappointed me. I found it a bit unreal (as the characters were formed in my mind and changing it was somehow ridiculous) and the story was a bit unbelievable!!!! About the characters I hated both MCs, Charlie well it was obvious why and Sal for the weakness (and that’s why it was unbelievable). I don’t count it as a psychological thriller it was just Told in dual POV, 1st person. It’s a standalone novel and yet I say again you should read it with caution. The only good thing about this book is its cover! Overall, it made me so exhausted (not in a good way) but hope you enjoy it more than me!

I see Sal writing Sal's review of 'Between You and Me' on Sal's computer and Sal types in the word but Sal doesn't know quite how to explain just how bloody awful this book is. So I punch Sal then tell Sal it is all Sal's fault for making me angry.

Charlie is watching me writing a review of 'Between You and Me'. I feel Charlie's eyes watching me. Charlie says that there is something funny about the prose. Charlie punches me. It hurts. Charlie punches me a lot, but then Charlie says sorry and we move on to the next chapter and do it all over again.
Charlie
Sal is wondering if we have got to the twist yet. 'Charlie, have we got to the twist yet?' says Sal.
'No Sal, we haven't got to the twist, stop asking stupid questions or I will have to teach you a lesson again,' I say. Now I have to go to work at my very important job. 'I'm going to work now at my very important job,' I say.
Sal
Charlie has to go to work soon, to Charlie's very important job. Charlie is quite annoyed and Charlie says that Charlie is going to teach me a lesson if I'm not careful. We were happy once, but only for a couple of pages seventeen chapters ago.
Charlie
I come home from work at my very important job. Sal has been at home all day, trying to work out what the twist is. 'Sal, did you work out what the twist is?' I say. 'Oh yes!' says Sal and Sal is quite defiant and has not learned Sal's lesson properly which makes me angry. 'I am angry,' I say to Sal and then I punch Sal on the nose.

Charlie comes home from work at Charlie's very important job and Charlie seems to be in quite an angry mood. 'This prose is quite unnatural isn't it, Charlie?' I say. 'Yes,' says Charlie, 'and the dialogue is pretty painful, too.' I tell Charlie that I worked out the twist, but Charlie looks quite angry again and then Charlie clenches Charlie's fists again and then Charlie punches me on the nose again and then Charlie says that Charlie is not sorry that Charlie has punched me on the nose again.

I am quite angry. I say to Sal, 'Sal, I am quite angry at being in such a crappy book.' Sal just looks at me with Sal's tired eyes.

Charlie says Charlie is angry at being in such a crappy book. 'It's not exactly Fight Club is it, Charlie?' I say. 'No,' says Charlie, 'and there are still forty three chapters to go.'

Sal and Charlie are a married couple with a young daughter, Maggie. They met at a Student Union bar years ago when both of them traveled in different lanes for different purposes. Whatever drew them together at one point in time has now dragged them into a cess pool in which they are both drowning. And survival causes them to take on personas that each of them no longer recognizes.
Charlie has become a corporate lawyer in a practice that has a choke hold on the heartbeat of success and partnership. Sal has accepted the role of staying home to raise Maggie after being a successful teacher. The chapters are each spoken in the balance of Charlie and Sal's perspective. And you will be front row and center to mood swings, obsession, jealousy, rage, and out-of-control behavior.
And you ask yourself, how does this book serve anyone with the likes of abuse hanging constantly overhead? "You bring all this on yourself." Perhaps it forces one's eyes on what is obviously a daily reality to people we know and love. It is not a pretty thing to behold and the pathway to hell is paved with the proverbial "good intentions". Although a work of total fiction, I'd hope that perhaps someone may see themselves within its pages.
You've probably heard that there is a stellar twist here. But remember, there has been the heavy, heavy weight of abuse dragged to the finish line to get there. Although a painful reading experience because of the subject matter, this encapsulates when, unchecked, life goes off the tracks completely. And the wheels keep turning.....

Man, I feel schizo. There’s Debbie the Thrill Seeker, who, like almost everyone who reads this, is absolutely blown away by The Twist. Right before it, I’m at the top of the roller coaster hill, not quite knowing when the fun is going to start, and then suddenly I’m flying down, whee……! It’s exhilarating beyond words. A thrill like that, it just makes me feel goooood!!! And then there’s a relaxing afterglow, when I bask in the thrill for a while and admire the shit out of the writer. I couldn’t stop reviewing the book and thinking how well it worked; lots of “I’ll be damned” moments as I reminisced. The twist is so so clever and unexpected—I’d be super surprised if anyone could see it coming. It messes with your head in a good way!
But there’s also Debbie the Editor and Killjoy, whose fingers are sore from having to hold the red pencil so long. Her complaint board is really full. (The fact that I'm referring to this Debbie in the third person is a bit worrisome, and I’m cutting it out right now!)
Here are all the things that bugged me, and I mean really bugged me:
1 The characters, a married couple, are too black and white. There’s a good person who is pure saint, and there’s a bad person who is pure evil—the characters are one-dimensional and the behaviors are totally predictable. Bor-ing!
2 The story is told from alternating points of view of the abuser and the abused. I usually love this format, but here, the two characters’ stories are the same! One character tells the story and then the other just repeats it. Of course, we get the inner thoughts (the editorials) on the events, but they are totally predictable, especially since we have the good-bad dichotomy thing going. One person is irrationally angry and explosive, the other walks on eggshells and is nervous. Over and over.
3 I didn’t buy the way the abuser talks or thinks. Abusers do not think of themselves as control freaks. They wouldn’t use the word “control”, ever, yet here, time and again the abuser mentions that they want to control the other person. A lot of the time, the dialogue and internal monologues of the abuser sound like they were lifted out of a psych journal that’s explaining what goes on in an abuser’s mind.
4 The events are either way too predictable or way too stupid (and unbelievable).
5 The writing seems amateurish. The language is too simplistic and often the dialogue sucks. There is too much explanation of things that are really obvious, and too much repetition. Sometimes when the story goes into a flashback, it’s a rugged transition and I lose my balance.
6 Where did the editor go? There are grammar problems, such as wrong noun and verb combos and wrong pronoun usage. And one of my biggest pet peeves appears a million times: the author uses “try and” instead of the correct “try to.” I admit I’m a nutcase when it comes to this: I’ll TRY TO stop being such a lunatic. I must remember, however, that I was reading an advance copy. I’m hoping the published version is cleaner.
7 Not an author problem at all, but still a big complaint: the Kindle version has a nasty issue—way too many times, spaces are missing between words. Believe me, this gets super annoying in no time. I’m hoping this is only a problem in the advance copy.
On the plus side, the author did an excellent job of creating a believable abuse victim and in describing their life and emotions. She pulled me right into their story and had me rooting for them all the way. There was one thing that didn’t ring true, and that bugged me—a lot. This book might be cathartic for anyone who has been in or has helped someone in an abusive relationship.
The author also was good at creating tension: Despite my bouts of boredom and annoyance, there were many times when I was scared—a sign of a good thriller.
And about the high that Debbie the Thrill Seeker experienced: Once I was back on solid ground and the effect of the thrill started wearing off, I realized it was shock value that had me stirred up; I’m not sure the twist was all that believable.
Still, the thrill was so great and made me feel so damn good, I’m betting that others’ reactions will be identical and that this book is going to be a biggie. Combine the thrill with a fast, easy, and sometimes tense read, and you probably have a runaway winner.

I am constantly living on a knife-edge, where even one sentence taken in slightly the wrong manner can mean the difference between war and peace.
Full of shocking realism, this story grabbed me at the prologue and refused to let go.
Charlie and Sal are a married couple trapped in a never-ending cycle of abuse. At times it's painful to watch. Especially when you know in the back of your mind there's no chance for a happy ending.
The way the author tells the story, from both the husband and the wife’s perspective, makes for a compulsive page-turner. I had to know how things were going to end.
Both Charlie and Sal pulled so many emotions out of me - rage, disgust, empathy, confusion and most of all sadness. How could someone treat a person they claim to love that way? How could someone stay and suffer?
I enjoyed the majority of this book, but I have to admit the ending was a little off for me. While it was unexpected and had a lot of shock value, I had a hard time accepting it.
Despite my thoughts about the ending, it's hard to believe this is a debut novel. It's that well-written. I can't wait to see what the author comes up with next.

The way the author tells the story, from both the husband and the wife’s perspective, makes for a compulsive page-turner. I had to know how things were going to end.
Both Charlie and Sal pulled so many emotions out of me - rage, disgust, empathy, confusion and most of all sadness. How could someone treat a person they claim to love that way? How could someone stay and suffer?
I enjoyed the majority of this book, but I have to admit the ending was a little off for me. While it was unexpected and had a lot of shock value, I had a hard time accepting it.
Despite my thoughts about the ending, it's hard to believe this is a debut novel. It's that well-written. I can't wait to see what the author comes up with next.

BETWEEN YOU AND ME by Lisa Hall is an amazing debut novel dealing with an abusive relationship. So hard to believe this is a debut novel, as it is exceptionally well written!
This is one of the best novels I have read this year!

Charlie is a corporate lawyer, and Sal is a stay-at-home mom, who planned to go back to teaching, when the time was right. They love each other. But they aren’t happy. Sal cannot leave, no matter what Charlie does – no matter how much it hurts.
The chapters alternate between Sal’s and Charlie's POVs. This makes for an amazing read, to fill in all the gaps and give us a complete picture. This is not a book that you would say that you enjoyed…but it is a book that you MUST read!

Easily one of the best debut novels I've ever read!!
*****But a warning to those who like to be completely blindsided---don't read another single review for this book until after you've read it!!*****
Extremely well written and engaging, it grabs you from the first chapter and doesn't let up until the last word. Like a train just starting out, you can feel the slow build ramping up to full speed with every page until BAM, you get hit with a twist you never saw coming! This is why I recommend not reading any reviews for this ahead of time. I didn't take my own advice so I knew a twist was coming and was on high alert. I managed to figure it out at exactly Chapter 29, but I had some help from an early childhood friend that tipped me off. There was a tell in this chapter that made the proverbial lightbulb go off for me. (When I first wrote this review, I had a hidden spoiler that shared how I figured out the twist. After reading this again I deleted it. I just don't want someone to have the chance to know ahead of time and ruin such a great moment when it's revealed. If you care to know, just message me)
So what is this book about? In short, domestic abuse. But there is a story here that goes well beyond the scars left behind. The reader gets a front row seat to both the victim and the abuser's thoughts and feelings to why this is going on. I found it fascinating to read how one event can be viewed so completely opposite between this husband and wife, not to mention the abuser's justification for their behavior.
I've already said too much, so I'm stopping here before I give anything away.
I can't recommend this book highly enough, and will be keeping my eyes open for more from this very talented author!!

I don't much like being an outlier, but when it comes to psychological thrillers I seem to often be the lonely one in the negative camp. Between You and Me was very well liked by a few GR friends and their reviews got me curious so I requested a copy from Netgalley. I should probably have known that this one wasn't for me when I saw that the premise of the book is an abusive relationship between the main characters -- Charlie and Sal. From the get go, this made me feel tense in an icky way. The story is told from their alternating points of view, and I read the back and forth between abuser and abused with a few contradictory nattering voices whispering at me -- "this doesn't feel particularly original", "I'm uncomfortable with an abusive relationship serving as the backdrop to a thriller", "I know I'm supposed to feel sympathy for Sal, but when is Sal just going to get out of there?", and on and on. And then "BAM!" -- there is a true clever twist at the end that turns the story on its head. It was enough of a shocker to make my impending 2 star rating jump to a 3 star rating. But the nattering voice starts up again and now it's voicing a few complaints about the twist -- but I have to keep those to myself to avoid spoilers... So here's the verdict: If you love psychological thrillers, don't trust my review because I am only a fair weather friend -- I didn't even like Gone Girl. If, like me, you only dabble in the genre, then Between You and Me may not be the place to start. But, mind you, it does have quite the twist... Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a chance to read an advance copy.

My best advice to anyone considering reading this book, is DO NOT read reviews about this book before reading it yourself (except this one, ha ha).
I know a few of you will be used to my essay length reviews, but I have deliberately made this review as vague as possible, as I feel I knew a little too much about this before reading it, due to other reviews and comments I had seen. It is better to throw yourself into this without the knowledge of those who have read it.
What I will say, is it is very hard to believe this is a debut novel, as it is exceptionally well written!
If you enjoy psychological thrillers that are very hard to put down, then I highly recommend reading this.

Wow!! What an ending!! I was totally taken off kilter. I did not see that coming at all. Heartbreaking and fantastic rolled into one great book.

Once again, I am blinded by the glow of so many stars.
At 20% I knew it wasn't for me and I thought about DNF.
My curiosity didn't let me though and I went all the way.
The so expected twist comes.
With a new perspective about the whole story, I looked back and wanted to hit my head against the wall. It was that or my kindle.
I can't even.
How could a man be so weak?!
I didn't enjoyed this story at all.
Hope my friends like it a bit more than me :(

I couldn’t agree more. The author used a serious matter and treated it with no respect for the sake of shock value. The lack of dimension in the characterization of both main characters failed me big time. They are flat. Especially, Sal. I had no sympathy for him and I couldn’t relate in any way. Why did he accept being treated like that? There was no info as far as I remember about his past to make more sense to me why he was taking all her bullying, suddenly, since the story already started with him married as a grown up. And Charlie? Why did she behave like that? Who was she before becoming the aggressor?
I also cannot understand why, if not for himself, he wouldn’t fight back for his child. As a mother, I would move mountains for my kids. How did he have enough strength to give I can’t remember how many stabs in his wife’s body at the end but was not strong enough to protect his child of being brought up watching that kind of violence.
A reader already attacked me saying that he feared not being taken seriously by the authorities. But it’s not like he had no proof, right? FGS! He had a neighbor he could rely on as a witness! She knew it. He had ton of pics also. Arggg! This was awful. Shallow, superficial, repetitive. Bottom line, this story turned out flat to me due to the lack of dimension in the MCs personalities. Moreover, there was no psychological depth to make me take this seriously. Poorly done. Overrated alright.

OH MY FREAKING GOD I am gobsmacked I just loved loved loved this one so much I could not put it down I wont give a long review as it will give it away but Bloody hell I am left speechless. The plot is told between alternating POV"S which I loved between Charlie & Sal my rating for this is a big 5 * + rating , my heart was pounding right through as the subject matter really got to me. I wanted to punch & scream at Charlie to stop my emotion level was right up there.
If you decide to read this book I am sure your heart will be pounding as much as mine was I must thank Lisa Hall for writing a first bestseller & dealing with this subject in a honest sensitive way.
I will definitely be reading more of this author bravo.

Two chapters in and I knew I’d be rating this 5 stars. Come the end I'd give it a 7 if I could.
Outstanding and it’s left me all in a spin. If you haven’t read this you have to meet Charlie and Sal, it’s an extremely bumpy ride, it’s uncomfortable and as real as a book can get, the characters literally jump off the page.
This made me very aware of the way my brain is wired and my own biases.
Five stars.

A fabulous psychological domestic thriller had my attention dispute my COVID virus. I could hardly keep my head up but I didn’t want to just lay there with my mind wandering. This book totally took my mind to an alternative dimension where I was flicking through the pages so fast the time just flew away.
This author drew me in and spat me out, I kid you not to how much I thoroughly was invested in this story.
Told in overlapping points of view from husband and wife made for a mind guessing game, which I hasten to say that I didn’t win.
As you can see, this book is part of my “busting my backlist” books. How on earth did this one escape me!

Apparently I’ve been living under a rock because I didn’t read this last year when it was released. When I signed up for the TBC 2017 reading challenge and saw this would fit one of their criteria, I was excited because I’ve heard nothing but fantastic things about this debut. I’m so pleased to say that I loved it just as much as my friends assured me I would!
I’m going to keep this fairly short and sweet because even though this has been out for almost a year, I somehow managed to avoid spoilers and the big twist wasn’t ruined for me, phew!
Everything you’ve heard about the stunning twist here is true, it’s completely unexpected and one of those that will have you flipping back and forth to make sure you didn’t miss anything. It knocked me on my ass, I haven’t been that shocked by a twist since I Let You Go. I kind of wanted to go back and immediately reread the entire book to see what clues I had missed previously, but alas my gigantic TBR won’t allow that.
This details an abusive relationship and was reminiscent of Behind Closed Doors to me with a villain that made my skin crawl. Sal and Charlie are married and Sal stays at home with their daughter, Maggie while Charlie is a lawyer. Charlie is a monster and a controlling bully and has no respect for Sal and doesn’t think that staying at home with a child is worthwhile, however insists that Sal does it anyway. That’s just a taste of the type of horrid person Charlie is.
My nerves were shot by the time I finished, this was a highly addictive read and I seriously keep wondering what took me so long?! Had I read this last year it would’ve definitely made my top reads of 2016 list. The only good thing about waiting so long is that Hall’s second novel is already available!

So, after reading a couple of reviews and firmly being told not to read any reviews!! I stopped and picked up my Kindle earlier today. It's now late evening and I've finished!
Between You and Me is a book about a couple and their outwardly perfect lives. Behind closed doors, however, things are very different. Charlie and Sal meet at university, settle in together and marry. Cut to a few years later and they now have a little girl, Maggie.
Billed as a psychological thriller with a twist ..... and I did keep hearing about this twist, it's a story of domestic violence and how one effectively bullies the other. Nothing really that different but it is a very readable book. Told in alternating chapter narratives we hear from the couple as they tell the story from their viewpoint. So, why didn't I love this more? At times it was a tad repetitive with a couple of lines being quoted time and time again about how one of them was going to make changes. An aspect concerning the Romanian businessman and his best friend felt a bit 'thrown into the mix' as a side story which to me didn't fit very well.
As for 'that twist' ...... yeah, I didn't see it coming but it wasn't enough to lift the book to a higher star rating. If anything it left me slightly more perplexed as to why? Can't really say much more really without giving anything away ...... and I won't do that!!

I know a lot of readers really liked this book, so I'm currently ducking my head! This is the typical he said, she said thriller, with each chapter alternating points of view. Often however, the stories were so similar they felt like filler. The whole book hinges on one unexpected twist, and while I love a "WOW" moment, I felt as if the book was written around the twist. The writing seemed flat, and the characters somewhat manufactured. As I said, I am so ducking!

WHAT? HA! Not everything IS what it seems!
Together Forever....The Perfect Family....I don't think so........
BETWEEN YOU AND ME is a story of domestic abuse with a sick, self-self-self serving control freak who demands rules must be followed or fitting punishments will be inflicted....lessons will be learned.
BETWEEN YOU AND ME is also a story we've all heard before....but with a kicker.
Told from two alternating perspectives, the redundancy in the telling about drove me mad, if I'm to be honest; and after the kicker, I sat here rehashing all that I read, the disastrous dinner kettle incident in particular, the allowance and ban from using the car and in the end, find the story in many ways to be quite unbelievable. (And typo's don't generally bother me, but a "30" degree sweltering heatwave in England mentioned twice really stuck out)
Anyway, still a very readable debut with a nasty protagonist. DO AVOID SPOILERS!

Suspenseful.....dark.....jaw dropping. This novel showed that no one really knows what goes on behind closed doors. I knew part of the twist because one reviewer didn't add spoiler alerts but I was still surprised.

Is this really the author's debut novel? This story was utterly gripping and compelling and told with such detail and description that I felt like I was actually there watching Sal and Charlie's marriage disintegrate. An exceptionally clever story and a real page turner (except I read it on my kindle so is that a "screen tapper"?). Highly recommended to all fans of psychological thrillers.

Finally a book which isn’t compared to Gone Girl yet lives up to the psychological thriller tag in a big way. Expertly told from alternating character perspectives with short snappy yet thoroughly effective chapters. Extremely well developed characters and plot with an amazing ‘knock me down with a feather ‘ twist that I didn’t see coming. Devoured this in 24 hours, just couldn’t put it down. Fabulous debut, well done Lisa Hall, loved it!

Controls money and important identification, such as driver’s licenses and passports
Causes embarrassment with bad names and put-downs
Has unrealistic expectations, like partner being available at all times
Acts like abuse is not a big deal, or denies it’s happening
Plays mind games to place blame on the survivor
Destroys property or threatens to kill pets
Shoves, slaps, chokes, or hits

In one word: AMAZING.
I can't say much without giving some details away, so I'll just say that it is a great book about an abusive relationship between Sal and Charlie, told from their two POV, so we get a glimpse inside each of the characters' minds.
AND THE TWIST. Wth did I just read? Amazing again.
I can't believe this is the author's debut novel. I'll be definitely waiting for more!
