The Cartomancy Workbook is a new, comprehensive, and user-friendly approach to the ancient art of telling fortunes with ordinary playing cards. It contains a carefully graded course of practical exercises designed to give the student a sound working knowledge of the traditional attributions and divisions of the Playing Card Deck and the meanings of the cards in the shortest possible time.Amongst the many topics covered are: getting to know the Deck; developing intuition; methods of interpreting the Court Cards; constructing Positional and Sequential Spreads, and advice on reading professionally.
It’s a pretty decent guide to cartomancy, but not exactly what I’m looking for. The meanings for some cards feel very old-fashioned—definitely not applicable for today’s modern society anymore. I had a hard time with that.
As for the learning system, it gives us a slow (and tedious, I admit) approach to cartomancy which pisses off the impatient little brat that I am, but I managed to survive just fine. It’s an excellent learning approach and it beat the crap out of me.
All in all, I still recommend this for beginners. I think it’s still a nice place to begin with, but make sure to read from other sources as well and compare which suits you and your craft the most.
My reason for 3 stars is this: the definitions for the cards are disjointed and hard to remember, and the characatures of the court cards feels archaic and not applicable to our modern life. It's also not clear if it relates to the symbolism or archetypes from the tarot.
She has a great system for studying and knowing these cards, and I really praise the author for her learning system. I'm using it with another playing card divination book to help me learn. She recommends visualisation, writing, and recording and listening as you look at the cards. She also starts you with fantasy plays early on, incorporating a new suit as you go.
Her learning method is very valuable, and made it with reading her book. But I am applying different meanings to the cards.
There are also some typos and errors. For example in the suit of swords the dignified meaning is listed twice and there is no ill-dignified meaning given.
A decent beginners primer for cartomancy. The book covers all you need to know to get up and reading the cards, numerous types of spreads, and a good deal of practice and study exercises.
