Sakurako wants Kasumi, Kasumi wants food. The coziest of stories continues as the titular young women get ready for life in the workforce while still navigating the challenges of their college years.
I’m going to spend this review praising with faint damns. This is as good as this series ever is, hitting all the usual beats and inter-cutting with the longer bonus stories that pluck a little harder on the emotional strings.
Why that’s a problem is that it did all this a lot better last time out, which I admitted was probably the best Futaribeya would get and am thus far correct. Watching things slide back into the standard can’t help but feel a bit of a letdown.
Most of the book is typical overly affectionate Sakurako and somewhat put out Kasumi. It just feels all a touch harsher after the last time around, even though it’s not appreciably different. It’s not all terrible - Yukari’s shy self shows up again and I like the way she just gets to be accepted as herself and nobody’s trying to make her into anything else.
Our heroines take a trip to the beach that is both emotionally resonant and also a great middle finger to the audience in terms of fan service. This joke is also repeated in the side chapter on bra shopping to excellent effect - I like that the fan service is by and large kept to the between chapter bits and isn’t the point of the story (the reason why Kasumi’s bras no longer fit is classic Kasumi).
3 stars - a good little book, as usual, just a bit of a downslide from the last volume. I like what the book does, but it has shown it can be even better, so readjusting to that is a bit rough.
I feel this is a little bit of a step back from the last volume, there felt like there was some steps forward in the last volume but its back to what it was before, same dynamic, no real development. Bit of a let down but that's not saying it was a bad read, just expected more after the last one.
I have really enjoyed this series, even with the extremely long waits between volumes... this is the 1st one I bought digitally, as I decided to switch to mostly digital partway through the pandemic. The girls are sweet, kind, & adorable. This is such a fun, happy little story. It doesn't take itself too seriously, yet it doesn't stray into the ridiculous, either. A nice fun read. Tokyopop is really putting out some good stuff lately. The only drawback is the long wait times between volumes. Well, good things come... and all that. Art, so gorgeous! Especially the cover & pages between chapters, what incredible detail! Dialogue, so soft & warm. You just want to hug this book. Yes, it's THAT cute! Characters, believable, likeable, relatable, admirable, interesting, kind, charismatic, friendly, & fun-loving.
3 stars. This series is so inconsistent and it drives me nuts. Volume six was fantastic and then this one felt like a return to the status quo a bit for our characters. Sakurako and Kasumi made great strides in their relationship in the last one but now Kasumi is back to seeming like she just tolerates Sakurako again. At this point I’m just reading to kind of be done with this series.
