Naileen Sharp will never forget her last sunny afternoon in Maine. She has plans—hang out with her best friend, play her favorite mobile game Vortex Beyond, and dodge the popular kids before junior year starts.
But that was before her kidnapping. Before her discovery.
Dragons are real.
Taken to a tropical island south-east of Hawaii, Nail and fifteen other teens are invited to join the Lumen society as part of their newest class. Receiving her own dragon and a magical gift is everything Nail could ever dream of. All she has to do is stay… and join…
And give Lumen her life.
Beneath the appeal of magic, dragons, new friendships, and a chance at true love lies a sinister reality—living with dragons is dangerous, magic always comes with a cost, and fate can’t be avoided. When Nail’s dragon pairing ceremony goes horribly wrong, she discovers that the cost she’ll have to pay is higher than anyone else’s.
Can she rise from the ashes and avoid a terrifying fate?
I met Charis at a horror convention about a month ago, at the time I was rereading the inheritance cycle and I decided to stop reading that and read ignite, I felt that I had to when Charis said that it was filled with secret societies, dragons, and magic. Three of my favorite things, but, this book blew my expectations out of the water, I can't wait to read the next one, the book was amazing, it has a decent amount of action and it has dragons, I can relate to the main character for the most part and I wish this world were real so I could be a part of it. I'm rambling, ok just this is a good book, a really good book and it deserves a read or two, maybe three. I'm happy I bought the book but I wish I could send my review and gratitude to the author directly but I lost her email so this is the best I can do. Really happy that I paid for a signed copy of the book. It going on my shelf right next to my LotR, Eragon, and Artemis Fowl.
Charis takes you from a world we all know in the eyes of a few teenagers and their life and plunges you into a Tropical paradise seamlessly. With each fantastical revolution it feels not only welcomed but it drives you to find out more. Nail is one of those characters that you instantly like, she reminds me of that younger sister that you love to death. But like that younger sister when she’s making some of her decisions early in the book you want to slap her in the back of the head and hug her right after words. Each decision she makes, or revelation drives you to want to know more. The world you dive into feels so complete and makes sense. I love how she uses legends that exist and uses them in the story. The other characters her own age all seem to bring me back to being her age and seeing those developing personalities. They make the mistakes or hold to ideals that they haven’t learned just don’t matter anymore. I don’t want to spoil anything but the Dragons themselves are extremely thought out. What she decides to do is combine all the Legends into a world that feels so natural it allows you not only to accept it but as you read you wonder how you didn’t see it this way before. Each character is introduced in a brilliant way that gives you questions, but Charis holds back those answers until the perfect time. Her main Character Nail starts to grow up in a way that feels natural. She is put into situations that are impossible however the way she deals with them are not always Ideal but necessary. As the saga unfolds it starts to reveal a long and rich history of the realm. The evil that starts to reveal itself unravels in a way that blurs the lines between what is evil and what is good. This story sets up a perfect carpet for the next story giving you more questions. And I can’t wait to read her next chapter in this saga!
It's been a while since I have picked up a book and could not put it down. I started reading this book in the evening and was up until 1:30 a.m. to finish it. AND I HAD TO WORK THE NEXT MORNING!! I had previously purchased books from this author's husband and when I went to a convention recently they had another booth. I purchased this book and cannot wait for the sequel. My daughter has also read this book and we enjoyed discussing it together. It was really fun talking about it with her and discussing what might happen in the next book. We are both excited for the sequel!
I want to be kidnapped and offered a dragon of my own! This is such a cool concept all around. It was amazing to read and the lore surrounding dragons is fascinating. I really want more of this! TI took me so long to read because I was savoring every word of it. And I want it to be in my list of current reads to keep others knowing about how amazing this is to encourage the second book to come out.
I met Charis at a Comic-Con. Immediately was drawn to this book and promised myself I wouldn’t read it til I finished my MBA program. The time finally came to read it last night and I could not put it down. I was completely sucked into the story needing to know more. Now I need Sunder! It is definitely a must read for any YA lover and lover of dragons!
This book surprised me. Initially, as a non-gamer, I felt I'd soon get lost in jargon. Little did I know, there was so, so much more beyond the opening chapters. A truly unique story, with charm and feeling. I highly recommend it, and hope Charis doesn't keep us waiting too long for more.
I loved this book so much it had two of my favorite things magic and dragons, the story itself was so well put together and there’s still so much we don’t know. And that cliffhanger has me impatiently waiting for the next one I can’t wait to read it.
Magic and dragons and teen angst make for a powerful combination in this unputdownable book. Think “Dragonriders of Pern meets Harry Potter, shaken AND stirred” in this fresh new series from Charis Crow. I was hooked from the beginning. Can’t wait for book 2!
The author does a good job of world building in short order. The ending of the first book does feel rushed and it is not self-contained. The writing does feel like this is an authors first novel, but you can feel the potential for what is to come.
Gosh this book was good! Intrigue, mystery, new worlds, friendships, and a bit of romance. And dragons. Left in an exciting cliffhanger so now I have to get book 2.
I absolutely love this book! My friend’s mother is actually Charise, and introduced me to the book! I love it and can’t wait until book two comes out this fall!!
I loved it! A great story that's supportive of the LGBTQ+ community while being centered around a complex story with Dragons at the heart of it. I will be recommending it to my friends.
For a new 'indie' author, this book was incredibly well done. The only reason I gave it 4 stars over 5 was it was a little to angsty teen for me. I also felt it took a while for anything to happen. That being said the last few chapters are a RIDE. Definitely some surprises and twists that make you way what?!!!!! Definitely an author I suggest looking at for your young teen reader!
