In Praise of Beer is a helpful guide for beer lovers looking to learn more about what they should look for with each sip of beer. In his latest book, Charles Bamforth brings new light to the topic of beer in ways perfect for any beer fan, lover, or connoisseur. In Praise of Beer is a helpful guide for consumers who want to better understand about the beer they drink. This book answers popular questions from consumers, including what consumers should be expecting from their beer; what styles are available; what they should be thinking about when purchasing beer, either in a bar or a beer shop; how to look after beer; how to present beer; which beer for which occasion, including dining; and if they can drink beer (in moderation) with a clear conscience. In Praise of Beer is written in an authoritative but easy-to-read style and is full of anecdotes, inside knowledge and valuable information.
This was an enjoyable collection of ruminations about various aspects of beer and brewing, written by a very influential professor of brewing science at UC Davis. I appreciate his down-to-earth and commonsensical attitude, and the fact that he didn't shy away from offering strong opinions, though at times the tone was a bit too "get off my lawn" for my tastes. Still, it's clear that he has a wealth of knowledge and insider experience and the book is both informative and enjoyable to read.
Few are as deserving of the title "the pope of foam" as Bamforth is. He's one of beer's greatest advocates, and Bamforth refreshingly sticks up for the big boys — particularly when it comes to resource consumption, specifically water — instead of simply waxing poetically for the local mom and pop shop. A swift read through beer's extensive history.
A well written and entertaining book about beer, informative and well researched. From history to beer making it makes you learn a lot. I liked how it's written and it was an interesting read. Strongly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Edelweiss for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
My first time reading Charles Bamforth. I really enjoyed it. This was a nice refresher on what I already know but one of my biggest takeaways was learning about how important and delicious Cask Ale is. Next time I’m over in the U.K. I need to try a whole lot.
