I wish this was translated already! This would be a great must-read for any Americans visiting Okinawa.
It is a historical fiction that takes place in Okinawa from 1952-1973, a time where the US military was the de facto governor of the place.
Perhaps unsurprising, but the book depicts the ugly harms caused by the American military bases and how locals have managed to survive through it. (Pollution, aircraft crashes, drunk driving, sexual assault… which still continue to this day)
I appreciated the book for showcasing that it is not just the US military that causes harm, but also the Japanese mainland for neglecting and treating Okinawa as a place for second class citizens. Again and again, stories like this seem to prove that the suffering will not change with a different head. A Japanese colonizer and an American colonizer may not look too different to someone who has lived under both periods.
The book ends on a kind of positive note to carry on hope and to keep living, even if the past has been ugly and unfair.

米軍基地がもたらす害は現在進行形な部分も多い為、憤りを感じぜずにはいられなかった。

雖然《寶島》對我來說太過黑暗，每個角色都背負著太多的悲傷，而書中描繪的沖繩戰後歷史和人物遭遇也相當悲慘，但在不知不覺中，我在一個長週末把整套上下冊的《寶島》讀完了。
我沒有特別喜歡那幾個主角，御城比較好一些，不過他給人的感覺有些老好人。零在哥哥的影子下變成一個無法控制的黑道份子，而山子整本小說都在不斷在悲劇中尋找自己。但是，在作者筆下，書中每個角色都被描繪得很細緻，他們的性格背後都蘊含著豐富的人生故事。
我很喜歡結局使用「戰果撈客」，將這個充滿無奈慘痛的故事配上一個浪漫化的美麗結尾。
