About the author
Michael Morpurgo
633 books3,043 followersSir Michael Andrew Morpurgo, OBE, FRSL is the author of many books for children, five of which have been made into films. He also writes his own screenplays and libretti for opera. Born in St Albans, Hertfordshire, in 1943, he was evacuated to Cumberland during the last years of the Second World War, then returned to London, moving later to Essex. After a brief and unsuccessful spell in the army, he took up teaching and started to write. He left teaching after ten years in order to set up 'Farms for City Children' with his wife. They have three farms in Devon, Wales and Gloucestershire, open to inner city school children who come to stay and work with the animals. In 1999 this work was publicly recognised when he and his wife were invested a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to youth. In 2003, he was advanced to an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature (FRSL) in 2004. He was knighted in the 2018 for his services to literature and charity. He is also a father and grandfather, so children have always played a large part in his life. Every year he and his family spend time in the Scilly Isles, the setting for three of his books.

Based on the real-life events of author Michael's uncles during WW2, In The Mouth Of The Wolf is told with both emotional prose and stunning illustrations. It wasn't an easy read but both uncles were interesting to read about. The first one Pieter joins the RAF right away to fight but the second one Francis doesn't. He really doesn't want to get involved in warfare, until life-changing news changes everything. Soon, Francis has to choose between the battlefields or staying at the farm he works at. Historical and important, a must-read!

This book is based upon the real-life story of Michael Morpurgo’s uncle. This is not only a great story, but it is also beautifully designed, with lots of black and white illustrations. It begins with France having his ninetieth birthday party. That night, he thinks of his family and everything he has loved – his father and brother, Pieter.
In this book is the story of two brothers, who were born in the shadow of the Great War and who came of age as a second, European war, erupted around them. Francis was at University in Cambridge, while Pieter was at drama college. Francis begins the war as a pacifist, but Pieter argues that he has to fight. When Pieter is killed, Francis decides that he cannot stay out of the war and, so begins his life as a secret agent.
My son is very interested in history and he loved this book. It relates the life of a brave, principled man and clearly shows the sacrifices made by Francis and Pieter’s generation. Not only is this a moving story, but it is a lovely book and the illustrations really add to the sense of time, place and character.

I read about this book in a newspaper, hunted it down and read it in one go! It bought tears to my eyes and hope into my heart for human kindness and compassion. We were so lucky to have people like ‘Roger’ to fight for our freedom and we never thank them. Thank you Michael for telling us about the three musketeers.

Bir çeviri daha bitti. Çevirdiğim ilk çocuk kitabı. Bayıldım, tek kelimeyle bayıldım. Öylesine tatlı bir dille yazılmış ki sanki kahraman sizinle sohbet ediyor. gerçek bir yaşam hikayesi ancak böylesine güzel, böylesine yüreğe dokunacak biçimde aktarılabilirdi.

Una historia narrada por un abuelo de 90 años. Me encantó el enfoque que le dió el autor y esa original manera de narrar la historia, como va nombrando a todos los suyos y va recordando todos los episodios de su vida como si estuviera hablando con los Co protagonistas de su historia. También me gustó mucho saber que es la vida de su abuelo y está basado en las vivencias de sus tíos.

Bir çocuk için sıkıcı ve ağır bir kitap bence. Desenler ve hikaye ise çok güzel, dil vurucu. Hiç alışık olmadığım savaş bakış açısı. Duygusal. Biraz romantik. Kitabın sonundaki fotoğraflarda hiç çekilen o acılar görülmüyor, tabii bu bir eleştiri değil. En güzelleri seçilmiştir.

Michael Morpurgo really is a Master Storyteller. He just manages to tell stories in such a way that they are easy to digest and make you want to keep reading.
This story is particularly poignant as it is about his own uncle, and his experience of WW2.
Francis is a pacifist and is sent to work as a farm labourer when he objects to being sent to fight against the Nazis. But when his charismatic brother, Pieter, is killed returning from a mission over France, Francis decides he needs to do something more practical for the war effort.
A chance conversation with an ex work colleague sees him leaving his wife and new baby daughter to head to France to become a secret agent. Along the way, he meets some remarkable people, who help keep him alive as he navigates his way through the horrors of the war.
The story is told from the perspective of an elderly Francis as he celebrates his 90th birthday and reflects on he life he has led.

Kitap gerçekten çok güzeldi. Bana sanki bir mektupmuş gibi geldi çünkü Francis; babasına, kardeşi Pieter'e, eşi Nan'a, yakın dostu Harry'e, diğer yakın dostu olan Auguste'a, Christine'ye ve Paul'a (yani hayatında ölen kişilere) ayrı ayrı yazıyor. Hitler'in zamanındaki zorlukları artık çok daha iyi anlıyorum. Buna karşı çıkan askerlerin ne kadar çok çalıştıklarını da çok daha iyi anladım. Mesela; Francis öğretmen olmayı seçerken Pieter asker olmayı yeğledi ve yirmili yaşlarında uçağı düştüğü için öldü. Francis bu olaydan sonra olanları düzeltebilmek için asker okuluna gidip asker olabilmek için eğitim gördü. Eğitim derken, imza taklit etmek, telsiz kullanmak, şifre çözmek, harita okumak gibi eğitimler. Hatta tanınmamak için isim değiştirmek de önemliydi, Francis artık Roger olmuştu...
Hitler de çok şeye sebep olmuştu...
Yazar, cümleleri çok güzel kurmuş ve sanki içini dökmüş. Zaten Michale Morpurgo'yu çok severim, en sevdiğim yazarlardan biri. Fakat sonundaki olağan dışı sürprizi görünce daha çok şaşırdım...

As much as I enjoyed the story and illustrations, I feel like no thought has gone into who the intended audience is. Is it for children (I would have been traumatised by some of this as a child) or for adults/young adults - as the character is an adult with adult relationships and thoughts throughout the majority of it?

As a kid I would have loved this book as my interest in the Resistance of WWII was awakened early on. Now, since I have read so much on the subject, this is nothing new really but it is personal and gives a good picture of one man's story. It's listed as a children's book and it is a very quick read, but well worth it.

This book is told from the perspective of a 90-year-old man looking back over his life and is based on the true story of Francis and Pieter Cammaerts, brothers who took very different approaches to the Second World War. Pieter, an actor, signs up to the RAF straight away, while his brother, Francis is a pacifist, yet later becomes involved in SOE and the French Resistance.
This is a thoughtful, beautiful story, made all the more poignant by the fact that the characters are not just created from someone's imagination, but did live and die. At the end of the book there is a selection of photographs and the story is enhanced by Barroux's illustrations throughout.

I loved this simply told story of the author's Uncle who is looking back at his life after celebrating his ninetieth birthday. He was a pacifist but ended up fighting as a a member of the resistance in France. Effective illustrations. Highly recommend for young adults.

Great book the story of two brothers during WWII, both taking different paths, based on a true story, there are two other books out there I would like to read depicting the lives of two spies fighting in the resistance, one of them being Churchill’s favourite, this one from Michael Morpurgo is a must read, highly recommended.

This was another excellent story by Michael Morpurgo, recreating the hidden struggle of the French Resistance in a short but moving account of his Uncle Francis’ fight during World War Two.
On the evening following Francis’ 90th birthday, deep in rural France, he lies awake unable to sleep, missing all the people in his life who are no longer there. So he begins to talk to them, each in turn. Starting with his father and moving through his family and friends, the story retraces Francis’ steps as he first chooses not to fight – because he is a pacifist – before changing events lead him into his own version of the war. The one-sided conversations are never boring, helping to keep the story tightly focused, so that even though it is a short, fairly quick read, it’s also powerful and moving.
The chapters dealing with the Resistance and the role Francis played showed how truly brave this man was, as were those who fought alongside him. His friend Christine was an incredible lady, and I’m glad this story brought attention to her enormous courage, as well as the others who fought alongside Francis.
Throughout it all, Barroux’s illustrations perfectly capture the mood of the book, in black and white and watery shades of grey. They will not only help keep the attention of younger readers, but they also add to the dreamy quality of Francis’ thoughts.
In all, another excellent read, especially for children who have an interest in history and the lesser known sides of war. And it’s pretty good for adults too.

Harika bir kitap okudum. Her ne kadar yazar kendini çocuk kitabı yazarı olarak tanıtsa da, bu kitap her yaştan insana hitap ediyor. Çünkü gerçek bir hikaye. Üstelik güzel çizimlerle de bezeli. .
🐺 İki kardeş, Francis ve Pieter oldum olası birbirlerinden farklıydılar. Biri savaş karşıtı iken, öteki bunun kaçınılmazlığından bahsederdi. Nitekim 1939’da savaş başladığında Pieter orduya katılırken Francis savaş karşıtı duruşunu değiştirmez. Ta ki hayatlarını sonsuza kadar değiştirecek o olay yaşanıncaya kadar. .

🐺 ikinci dünya savaşına genel olarak hep Yahudi soykırımı tarafından baktık. Oysa bu Kitapta beni en çok çeken şey, başka cephelerden de olayı görmek oldu. Ana karakterler sayesinde Fransızlar, İngilizler, Polonyalılar açısından da durumun vehametini görmüş oldum. Demem o ki, lütfen bu kitabı önce kendiniz sonra çocuklarınız için alın.

Her ne kadar güçlü ve duygusal yönden etkileyici bir hikaye olsa da kitabın sahiciliğiyle ilgili bir tatminsizlik hissi oluştu. Yazarın savaşa karşı tutumu da tam olarak sahiplenebileceğim tarzda değil. Antimilitarist izlenim çizilirken alttan alta verilen milliyetçi mesajlar, etkileşimi zayıflatmış. Bir de kitabın hedef kitlesi ne çocuklar ne de yetişkinler olabilmiş. Her şeye rağmen okumaya değer bir hikaye. Zaten oldukça kısa.

Kitap, İki kardeş ve her şeyi değiştiren savaşın gerçek hikayesini anlatıyor. Kitabın akıcı bir dili var. Çizimleri keyifli ama...

Another wonderful tale from the masterful Morpurgo, amazing to hear stories from his own life! Barroux’s drawings are just perfect!
