I would live the part, become the part, become a secret agent and leave the rest of me behind - son, brother, husband, father, pacifist, teacher - leave it all behind.
This book is told from the perspective of a 90-year-old man looking back over his life and is based on the true story of Francis and Pieter Cammaerts, brothers who took very different approaches to the Second World War. Pieter, an actor, signs up to the RAF straight away, while his brother, Francis is a pacifist, yet later becomes involved in SOE and the French Resistance.
This is a thoughtful, beautiful story, made all the more poignant by the fact that the characters are not just created from someone's imagination, but did live and die. At the end of the book there is a selection of photographs and the story is enhanced by Barroux's illustrations throughout.
