Today’s culture and others’ views, even those of other Christians, can present a distorted view of God. Some suggest God exudes qualities He does not possess such as being unloving or apathetic toward His creation. In a world where we find people creating God in their own image, studying God’s names can remind us that we are created in His. In fact, one of the best ways to know God’s true character and grow closer to Him is to study His names.

In The Names of God , Melissa Spoelstra leads women on an exploration of the many names of our triune God―from El and Elohim to Yahweh and its many combinations to names such as Abba, Jesus, and Holy Spirit…and many others.

As women study the names of God, their ideas about God will become more grounded in what His names tell them, and thus more personal, allowing a greater trust in Him to share the details of their lives. Melissa Spoelstra is a popular women’s conference speaker, Bible teacher, and writer who is madly in love with Jesus and passionate about helping women of all ages to seek Christ and know Him more intimately through serious Bible study. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Bible Theology and enjoys teaching God's Word to diverse groups and churches within the body of Christ. She is the author of Joseph: The Journey to Forgiveness, Jeremiah: Daring to Hope in an Unstable World, and the forthcoming Total Family Makeover: 8 Steps to Making Disciples at Home. She lives in Dublin, Ohio, with her pastor husband and four kids.

I have done a few Bible studies by Melissa Spoelstra, and I have always enjoyed how her studies get me digging into my Bible and learning valuable lessons without feeling overwhelmed. The Names of God Bible study was no exception! When we read the English Bible, we do not always get the full effect of the Hebrew and Greek names for God and their meanings, so it was nice to gain more insight on this through this study. Some of the names you will learn about in this study are:
• Elohim
• El Shaddai
• El Roi
• Yahweh Nissi
• Adonai
• I Am

These names, along with quite a few others, are explained, and through learning about these names, you learn about the character of God. I read the Bible every day, and I still found myself discovering more about who God is, through His many names. Names of God is a six week study, with 5 sessions per week. Each session is around 5-7 pages, and you will be asked to look up passages in your Bible and complete fill in the blank answers. There is also a memory verse for the week, and each session that week will conclude with you filling in words from that memory verse to aide in committing it to memory.

Some quotes that stood out to me in this study were:

• “Among other things, God says in His Word that you are valued, new in Christ, forgiven, chosen, and loved. God made you in His very image, and though sin has corrupted the planet, God found you so valuable that He sent His Son to cleanse and redeem you.”
• “At times I reduce God to something I can understand and define, but we can’t put the transcendent Elohim in a box. He exists beyond and above us. He made the beginning and already knows the end.”
• “The easy comforts the world promises will ultimately not bring us life. We must continually push past our desire for instant gratification so we can pursue the living God with practices we know will help us remember that He is El Chay, the Living God.”
• “Jesus knows our tendency toward fear, worry, and stress, and He wants to calm our hearts and minds. He says that if we put our trust in Him, it will be all right.”
• “My sin separated me from God, but through faith in Christ, I now live in the hope of life that will never end.”

The latest Bible study from Melissa Spoelstra will draw you deeper in the Word and in relationship with our Unchanging God (Yahweh Elohim). "The Names of God - His Character Revealed," is true to its title. Not only will you learn the many names of God used throughout the Bible, you will learn more about His character and have the opportunity to grow closer to Him. Spoelstra gives great insight to the names and also great personal applications for your life. "He is might and relational," Spoelstra says in the study and the study allows ample opportunity for the reader to grow in that relationship. Her introduction of women throughout history (Harriet Tubman, Catherine Marshalle, Amy Carmichael and more), shows how people have walked with and grown with God. All parts of the triune God are covered and Spoelstra is great at condensing truth into the "Big Idea" each day. This is a fantastic BIble study you won't want to miss!

"The Names of God" is a six week long group Bible study on some of the names of God. Each week had 5 days of study, plus there was a day where you took notes on the video study. The author choose various Hebrew and Greek names for God and did a day of study on each name. She gave the name's translation/meaning and then provided some commentary about where this name first occurred in the Bible and how knowing this name may help us to more fully understand God's character and work in our lives. She included verses to read, reading comprehension questions, and discussed how this applies to our lives. She included some verses to memorize and a nice prayer at the end of each chapter. Overall, I'd recommend this interesting study.

It is so important for us to know God so that our trust may grow. So that in the tough times we will remember who holds our life. When the world is upside-down and makes no sense, we can look up and know that He is our Abba Father and loves us so much. Its important to remember that we have the Holy Spirit, our Teacher and Comforter to strengthen us. He also gives us the supernatural power that we need to stand firm and strong in the truth of who God is and who we are in Him. I highly recommend this book, the timing is perfect. Let's get to know our Creator, Savior and Spirit of God more intimately so that we can be transformed in His image and be equipped to share with others.

The Names of God Bible Study has been so wonderful!

Getting to know the characteristics of God and His Names has brought me a richer, deeper, and more beautiful understanding of who He is and how much He loves me, sees me, and is right beside me through all of the things I may be going through.

Melissa takes Biblical stories, as well as real life experiences to relate the Names of God so we can see how they correlate to our own lives.

I highly recommend this study to Bible study groups, Connect groups, a few friends who want to get together, or even just for someone to do on their own and get to know The God who loves you so.

I've read many books on the names of God, but this 6-week study brought Biblical truths right into my daily life! In addition to the practical applications, one of the things I like most about this study is the flexibility Spoelstra incorporates. In the Introduction, she invites the reader to choose a level of commitment that fits with her life season. Then the daily lessons are arranged in a way that those who are more familiar with Scripture can go deeper with additional insights, but those who want to stick to the basic lesson can do so. Melissa Spoelstra is a capable and friendly guide for those who want to know God better through a study of His names. Great study!

Have you ever looked at your Bible and wondered what Yahweh, Elohim, Jehovah Jireh, or El Shaddai meant? My small group is studying the names of God using Melissa Spoelstra’s Bible Study called The Names of God: His Character Revealed and we are all loving it. It is rich and full of depth, truth, and insightful questions. I love the three B’s: Beheld, Believe and Bloom as she guides us through each name of God. I highly recommend this Bible Study!

Deepen your understanding of the nature of God through this in-depth, six week study. Every week presents five new names for God as well as a “Brief Statement of Belief,” which strengthens the message of the lessons. One of my favorite teachings from Week 3 is about Yahweh Nissi, The Lord Our Banner. Author Melissa Spoelstra writes, “The idea is that God is victorious in battle, and the flag of His victory is lifted high.” There are so many exciting revelations packed in this study, and I know that you will be blessed by each and every one! This study certainly is more than wonderful!

In June I started this amazing Bible study called The Names of God: His Character Revealed by Melissa Spoelstra. The Lord reveal Himself so much during the study of His Beautiful names that still don’t even begin to describe Him. Yahweh Shalom-He is Peace, the one we are all searching for, He is our loving Adonai (Master) that we should all follow, Ruwach-the Spirit of God found in both the Old & New Testament and Jesus, the name above ALL names to the glory of God the Father. This was the first Bible study I've done by Melissa Spoelstra. I had been wanting to study the names of God for some time and this was a good study. I not only learned about the different names of God but how we can rely on each of these characteristics to know God more intimately. There was a lot to take away and apply to my life. That's such an important part of any Bible study, to know God better and to apply His truths to my life.

This is my third study from Melissa, and I loved it! She has a way of writing that is relatable, convicting and enjoyable to read. This is a great reference to use when studying God and his character. I learned a lot and would recommend this to anyone who wants to dig deeper into God's character. I knew God had many names but to actually study some of them and learn where each came from and their meanings was so amazing. To be able to pray to each specific name according to the role God is in my life was so meaningful. This is an unbelievable bible study. If you’re wanting to know the character of God, this is the study for you. I loved the study was compiled. Melissa incorporates various stories and experiences so it’s an easy study to follow. You’ll definitely love this study. Melissa is an amazing teacher, who does a wonderful job of tying everything together. I loved how she makes it relatable to everyone so we all learn from this study. The most important aspect of the study is growing closer to God.
