Rate this book
To unleash her dragon, she must confront her past.

In the seven years since Amaleigh failed to assassinate her best friend, she’s been on the run. Jumping from world to world where she never quite fits in, all she truly wants is to stop running and find a place to call home. Unlocking her cold, dead heart might be a start to unleashing her inner dragon, but that would mean trusting another and there’s only one person she’s ever trusted—the same man she couldn’t kill.

Prince Gwilym knows he shouldn’t risk Amaleigh’s life by asking for help, especially since he’s the reason she had to escape Eidyn. They grew up together as best friends, innocent of the knowledge it was Gwilym’s father who murdered her family and left her an orphan to live on the streets. Now his life is in peril and she’s the only person he trusts.

Time’s running out for Gwilym and his father. Amaleigh’s future hangs in the balance.

Forced to make a desperate choice, she must put aside her hatred for the man who murdered her family and sentenced her to a life of crime and loneliness. Dare she risk everything and return to the one place she tried desperately to forget?

To save those she loves, she must become the Dragon Mage the king fears most.

For those who dare to soar

You know those movies you see on the big screen? Those made after fairytales, when you know that could never happen and yet watch spellbound and glued to the chair?
This book is exactly like that.

Tameri Etherton gives us here a spellbinding tale of courage, determination, friendship, love and dragons. Not one of those serious ones, to dissect and analyse. But one to simply take in stride and enjoy.
I finished it in one sitting and was left wanting for more.

Amaleigh is on the run. At home, there is a death warrant on her head, set by the King himself. Not because she had tried to kill his only son, prince Gwilym, though she had been sent to do just that. The reason for her sentence is her own nature. Amaleigh is an aerlghot. A dragon shifter; a Mage, with the soul of a dragon inside her. And the King is set on destroying their kind.

Amaleigh had escaped his purge but lived through the hell one power hungry man could inflict while growing up. A life of thieving among the street urchins taught her how to shut away her heart and build strong walls around it. And that life had turned her into a cold, heartless witch. Or so she would want everyone to think.

Amaleigh's mentor, Cornelius, the one who both saved and trained her, tries his very best to win her heart too. But letting her guard down would leave Amaleigh vulnerable. To love another was to open herself to weakness and that was something she could never do.

And yet, when a childhood friend's desperate plea of help echoes in Amaleigh's mind, she cannot help but feel something. After all, Gwilym had been her only friend while growing up. But he is also the son of the man who murdered her own family, as well as the one she had been sent to kill.

Time’s running out for Gwilym and his father. But Amaleigh’s future hangs in the balance if she answers the call.

Can she survive the very place her parents were murdered, or will palace intrigues claim another victim? If she fails Gwilym, she might lose her chance to come to terms with her past, and open her heart.

Forced to make a desperate choice, Amaleigh must put aside her hatred for the man who murdered her family and sentenced her to a life of crime and loneliness. She must risk everything and return to the one place she tried desperately to forget. Because her heart won't allow her to deny the call.

I will not tell you what will happen next. You'll have to read this and find out. But I guarantee you'll be glued to the pages till the very end.

A gripping mystery, wonderful magic, quite a bit of sorrow and longing, accompanied by a fast paced plot with lots of unexpected twists that you won't see coming... Tameri Etherton gives you all this and much more.

You'll get to feel Amaleigh's heartache when a loved one of hers is being tortured, as well as the longing to be loved and love in return.
You'll get to smile at the quirkiness of an Elven princess, as well as laugh out loud at a captain's antics.

To be fair, on the last account, I would have probably reacted the same in his place:
'The dox you doing Amaleigh? He pinned himself against the wall, his head bent against a rafter.
'No. No. No. ... Bad combination. Baaaad.'

And you're gonna LOVE the dragonlings!
'All wings and tails and horns, ....they were at the adorably clumsy stage when they tripped over their own feet and sneezed fireballs.'

The twins are so sweet and endearing and fabulous!!!

And Amaleigh herself - tough and sassy and cursing like a sailor - you'll probably be in her corner from the very first chapter.

Written in a light and easy to follow prose, Dragon Mage is a spellbinding tale with all the feels.
It does get darker at times, describing beatings and torture, as well as an almost rape. But then you'll get a few scorching hot scenes too, as well as all the longing and heartache in between. This book is a rollercoaster ride as feelings are involved.

A few of the characters do come into their powers a bit too quick and things sometimes happen at exactly the right time. And yet, that didn't diminish the overall charm.
In the end, what stuck with me the most, was that enchanting feeling you always get after a tale well told.

If you're in a mood for a light fantasy read with all the right feels, Dragon Mage would be the perfect choice.

Flippin' barnacleballs - it is one heck of a ride!

I reviewed this book as a judge in the 6th Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off.

A long time ago, Amaleigh’s family was murdered by a magic-hating king. As the only one who escaped, she grew up on the streets but forged an unlikely friendship with Prince Gwilym. That is, until his father found out she was still alive and forced her on the run. Ever since, she’s been jumping between worlds, unable to find a place she truly belongs and having difficulty accessing her magic. Until one day she receives a telepathic cry for help from Gwilym and, despite all of her better instincts, realizes she has to return to help him.

As you can probably tell from the synopsis, Dragon Mage is set up upon a fair amount of backstory. It also contains a number of different fantasy elements such as multiple worlds, dragon shapeshifters, mages, elves, fae, and siphoning. Generally, I’m one to appreciate a complex magic system and characters with a rich history. However, in this case, the book was too short for all of these components to work together in a satisfying way, which is a shame because there were several parts that I was interested in learning more about.

We didn’t get enough time spent worldbuilding for my tastes, which left the magic system unexplained and the backstory as more of a hindrance than a boon. I never got time to settle in and enjoy the world because new and somewhat unnecessary elements were constantly being introduced. Several of the events that took place seemed to only exist to set up a crossover with the author’s other books, which might be exciting if you've read them, but for me took precious time away from the primary plot development. And even though the big reveal at the end did surprise me, it didn’t have the emotional impact that it could have had if I had gotten to know the characters better. As it was, I didn’t feel any great attachment to them, not even to our main character Amaleigh, which made it difficult to care very much about what took place.

Though Dragon Mage was a mediocre read for me, I think it could be good for someone with different preferences and expectations. If you like a book to just jump into the thick of things and prefer soft magic systems to more defined ones, you’ll probably find much more enjoyment in this novel than I did.

I really enjoyed reading Dragon Mage. It is a story about Amaleigh, she is an orphan who has been on the run. She has been going from one world to another in order to stay safe from the King who murdered her entire family and has a contract on her life. She lives with her mentor Cornelius but while meditating she gets a jumbled message from her best friend growing up, Gwilym, who is also the King son who murdered her family and has a contract for her death. She knows her friend wouldn't ask for help unless he has no other choice and doesn't understand how he can send her a message through her mind. Cornelius tries to talk her out of it because it risks her saftey. But regardless she has to go. She goes to the castle to find her friend, from there the story really begins, she sees old friends and might even make new ones if she can figure out who to trust. There are lots of twists in the story, some battles, magic which is forbidden and of course there are dragons and mages. This book is a must read. Can Amaleigh save her best friend, can she find love? I would recommend this book, I enjoyed it and I will be reading more or Tameri Etherton's books in the future.

I'm very glad I found this author! I really enjoyed this book, although it is clear that there's a prequel (that I plan to read soon!) there was enough back story that I had no problem following the story. An interesting universe, and a central character who is much more than she seems. There are a few adult scenes, but not inappropriate, and of course a little violence, but it's mostly character driven, and very well written. I started in the morning with my coffee and finished it before dinner. Now I think I'll go look for some more by this author (a detailed explanation of how the previous books connect is at the end of this one) I did receive an ARC and this is my unbiased and voluntary review.

Read it in one sitting!!!! All of Tameri books are awesome but this one took the cup!! I was already curious about what had happened with Ameleigh and finding that this book was all about her made me sooo happy. This book has a bit of everything: love, betrayal, friendship, unlikely allies and left me with one question... That might be a spoiler so I wont ask... I´ll wait to see in which book will this answer come up!

Dragon Mage was a fast moving, entertaining read with the majority of the narrative driven by a strong heroine just coming into her magic who forges through obstacles and intrigue to save not only her one true love but her world.
