The premise was good but the execution wasn’t what I expected. It started well with Evie escaping from her criminal family that practically sold her to one of their cohorts. She was in the middle of her journey when she sees a cabin, after some inspecting she decides it’s abandoned and plans to stay for a few days. At the exact time Deputy Aaron is nearing his cabin—after his brother couldn’t come with him—to enjoy a little vacation, is then these two meet when Aaron thinking it was a thief opens the door to a naked woman, Evie. Truth to tell, it was funny how she didn’t mind wandering that way in front of Aaron and how he reacted.
After that things started to go 𝒹ℴ𝓌𝓃𝒽𝒾𝓁𝓁. One of the things that turned the book from funny to boring was the over-description of regular activities, like making snares (I don’t need to know every step to make one! It was like reading a tutorial), going to the “toilet” (I don’t need to know every time they want to go), cooking or cleaning up. Next it was Evie’s utter cluelessness, at first I understood because of the way she grew up with her brothers and father she’s not aware of many social behaviors but after some time this got old, what it was funny one time ended up being annoying. And last, it was the protagonists’ behavior, it was just childish. Coming from Evie I can understand but from Aaron?
I know this is a short story but there are ways to make it believable, and I never truly bought how they fell in love. The historical part felt a little superficial. I couldn’t take seriously the power exchange thing either, it was silly. And the epilogue didn’t contribute.
